FC Astana vs Manchester United

The Europa League enters its penultimate week of fixtures in the group stage and we begin with an early kick-off between Kazakhstan side FC Astana and Premier League club Manchester United. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30pm GMT at the Astana Arena on Thursday afternoon and with the away side already through to the last 32 this is a chance for youngsters to get some first team experience.

FC Astana have endured a torrid European campaign this year. Manager Roman Hryhorchuk saw his team defend their Kazakhstan Premier League title for a sixth consecutive time but the club sits bottom of Group L with no points from four games conceding 14 goals and only scoring 1 during that period. The club are already eliminated from this season's Europa League and with their domestic season now wrapped up you have to question what motivation their side has coming into this game.

Manchester United might not have had the easiest of rides on the domestic front but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men have cruised through to the knockout stages of this competition with two group games remaining. The Red Devils will likely field a number of inexperienced players. The average age of the squad is 20 years old and that includes 36 year old Lee Grant likely to start in goal. A few other experienced names included in the squad are Luke Shaw, Jesse Lingard, and Axel Tuanzebe.

Even though United are sending a young side out to Kazakhstan I still think the ability of these young players should give them a win. If you look at this FC Astana side they have conceded an average of 3.5 goals per game in this group. There is enough quality in this United side to get through this with a narrow win. I don't blame people for fancying a double chance bet on FC Astana but I've been foiled by backing a poor side to beat a weakened better side too many times in this competition.

Ηardly anything for the Romans, who are paying for their defenses this year. Only 3 points have been scored, against 9 of the visitors and today they all want the victory to claim that their hopes are gone. Latsali are in great shape after 5/5 championship wins and today have the first reason to win

The Romans have been involved with the 5 points that have thrown Gladbach away and are now at a disadvantage in the group. The Turks with 7 points are at the top of the table and score aggressively with ease. An open match is foreseen, as they both want the win for their own reasons and the defensive weaknesses of both lead us to score a goal.

Two victories over Trabzonspor brought Krasnodar back to the qualifying track. The Russians have shown an improved image in recent games and remain strong at home. The Swiss have ticked off their 10-point ticket and travel to Krasnodar today, with a mind-boggling Sunday derby with Jung Bois. We might also see some changes to the original shape

Arsenal vs Eintracht Frankfurt

The Europa League matches are spread throughout the afternoon and evening on Thursday. This match-up from Group F sees Premier League club Arsenal take on German side Eintracht Frankfurt in an 8pm GMT kick-off at the Emirates Stadium. The home side need a draw to progress to the last 32 of the competition where as defeat for the away side could leave their qualification hopes in tatters.

Arsenal sit proudly top of the group with 10 points from their 4 group games. Sir Alex Ferguson once said that 10 points is the magic number in European group stage competition. Unfortunately, the Gunners know that if they lose both of their remaining matches then they may well still exit the competition on 10 points. Unai Emery has come under severe pressure with media outlets even speculating that his successor is already being lined up. Wolves manager Nuno Santo is the current favourite with the bookies.

Eintracht Frankfurt are currently in 3rd place in this group but only outside the qualification spots on goals scored compared to Standard Liege. Adi Hutter's men are treading water in mid-table in the Bundesliga. Back-to-back defeats in the league without scoring have been added to by the most recent group game loss to Standard Liege in a 2-1 score-line. Even victory here may not prove to be enough and it cannot be under-estimated how much of a burden that possibility will be on the mentality of Frankfurt.

When these two sides met at the beginning of the group phase it was Arsenal that prevailed as 3-0 winners. Granted, two of those goals came in the final 5 minutes at the home side pushed to get back into the game but it was a resounding win for Emery's men. It showed furthermore that the Spaniard knows how to manage in this competition. I'm expecting him to want to ease the pressure on his position and seal a spot in the last 32 in emphatic style tonight.
