PAOK Salonika vs Spartak Moscow

I was going to cover a game tonight but when I saw the odds on a Spartak Moscow away win in this Wednesday night clash at 6pm being played against PAOK Salonika at the Toumba Stadium, well, I had to get on it. Last season's runners-up in the Greek Super League versus last season's 3rd placed side in the Russian Premier League.

Neither side has ever won a European trophy but they remain renowned names on the European stage. There is a bit of a carrot on the end of a stick here with the winning side set to face Benfica or Fenerbahce in the play-off round of the competition. Opposition that both sides will feel they can beat.

PAOK will be buzzing coming into this game. A 5-1 aggregate win over a solid Basel FC side saw them win 2-1 at home and then 3-0 away. This was the same Basel FC side that has been a thorn in the sides of some of Europe's biggest clubs over the years. The only question is whether PAOK have already peaked with those two displays? Or is it a sign to come of an impressive European campaign for the upcoming season?

Spartak Moscow will need to get a Champions League monkey off their back. The 2017/18 campaign was one to forget with a 7-0 defeat to Liverpool and drew home and away against Slovenian minnows Maribor. In fact, Spartak have a draw and five losses from their last six away matches in this competition. Is it time to end that hoodoo after such a positive World Cup that was hosted in Russia? Will that feel good factor help?

A number of tipsters are backing a home win. It would be silly to back Spartak for a win with their record on the road in European competition over the years. However, the odds being offered mean they could be worth backing for an Asian Handicap. I think they'll give PAOK a stern game and I wouldn't be surprised if Spartak took something from this game.

Yes, PAOK did exceptionally well to defeat Basel FC twice in the previous round but Spartak have a point to prove. Ilya Kutepov, Roman Zobnin, and Aleksandr Samedov were all part of that Russia side that reached the World Cup Quarter-Finals. So morale should be high within the Spartak camp and they will feel anything is possible now.

Celtic vs AEK Athens

The second preview from this week's Champions League matches features another Greek team. That hasn't happened very often! This time around it's AEK Athens who travel to Celtic Park to face Scottish Premier League champions Celtic in a 7:45pm kick-off on Wednesday night.

Last season, these two clubs ended up being eliminated at the same stage of European competition. It was the last 32 of the Europa League. Celtic had gone via the Champions League and finishing 3rd in their group. AEK Athens entered the Europa League in the first round after failure to get past this stage of the Champions League qualification process last summer. Two very different routes but the same outcome.

Brendan Rodgers has seen his team progress steadily through this competition so far with a 6-0 aggregate win over Armenian side Alashkert and a 3-1 aggregate win over Norwegian club Rosenborg. The club has made progress over his two years in charge in European competition and Rodgers will be hoping he can move them forward again by reaching the group stage once again and possibly going even further.

Marinos Ouzounidis guided his team to the Greek Super League title last season. No mean feat. The domestic league season is yet to begin so this is a baptism of fire for a first competitive game of the season. It does beg the question of how well AEK Athens can handle the vociferous atmosphere of a packed Celtic Park?

I'm going to have to back Celtic to win here. Rodgers has turned them into a consistent side and even in European competition he had got them playing in a way that grinds out results. Their form so far in the Champions League has been superb with Odsonne Edouard scoring for fun. Three clean sheets in their last four European matches shows a confident defence and I think they could get another shut out here.

I also really fancied Spartak here. 2-0 up and they lose 3-2! Sometimes you pick the right bet and it kicks you in the teeth, but it was the right bet at the prices for sure.

Note to self: Spartak Moscow are mentally fragile!
