We have a double dose of excitement with the French Super Cup being played between PSG and Rennes. Then we also have a round of Ligue 2 matches to consider. The good news is that we get a taste of the best players in the French Super Cup when Ligue 1 champions PSG take on Coupe de France winners Rennes in a 12:30pm kick-off on Saturday lunch-time at the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre in Guangdong, China (yes, you've read that correctly!). PSG have been the dominant force in French football for a number of years now. This is almost becoming tradition for them to be involved in this season-opener. Thomas Tuchel starts his latest campaign as manager of the team with ambitions to seek the holy grail that is the Champions League trophy. You have to question if they've made the signings needed with the likes of Ander Herrera, Abdou Diallo, Idrissa Gueye, and Pablo Sarabia not quite up there with the world class stars they've signed before but maybe that's what they actually need. Rennes come into this game as firm underdogs but they showed against Arsenal in last season's Europa League that they're a side that should not be taken lightly. The signings of M'Baye Niang and Flavien Tait have boosted their ranks but the loss of Benjamin Andre is a punch to the gut. Have they done enough to improve on their disappointing 10th placed finish in the league? I'm not so sure. It's always tough to bet against PSG when they have such an experienced and accomplished manager at the helm like Tuchel. You compare these two squads and they're worlds apart. The absence of Neymar didn't have much impact on Brazil in the Copa America over the summer. His absence here might be felt a bit more but I still expect PSG to earn a solid win with their embarrassment of riches.
