    Thanks for the comments.

I'll let it run as it is for the time being and we'll see how it goes.

As I say one option could be to have a 12 month competition, this should be a true test, you would be unlikely to win this by randomly picking long shots.

I think we've always had a 12 month competition which consisted of adding up the monthly totals of people who'd made a certain amount of posts

Actually there used to be prizes as well ..... not money but bronze horse statues

    I've got 3 of them here ! ....... ?

But I don't think a separate 12 month comp would work ....... it's too long a period to maintain interest, particularly if you seem out of contention after a few months. We know that some people stop posting in the monthly comp if they have a few losers at the beginning of the month !

A pretty drastic solution could be to have a rule whereby maximum odds for a selection was, say, 10/1 ...... in which case you're trying to take 'pot luck' out of it but rewarding punters who pick a decent number of winners

It's a tricky one though because I'm sure lots of posters enjoy the thrill of trying to land the big one ...... and that is an integral part of racing and betting

Maybe a separate spin off comp with a 'minimum odds' of 33/1 !

  2. I switched to footy betting a couple of years ago ........ since then I've lost all the money I'd won on the horses over the preceding 10 years plus a couple of hundred on top

At the moment I'm on Leicester who are going to lose at home to relegation certainties Fulham

Then I'm on West Ham and I think if that loses I'll have to get a grip and take a lengthy break from footy betting

It’s the next step for me Trotter. I love the sport and always had a thing for numbers, so it goes hand in hand. Would like a quicker way of doing it, as pen and paper is time consuming. We all try and improve our game don’t we.

I never got into spreadsheets and all that ....... too complicated !

  4. I used to do ratings for the all weather racing ...... probably kept it up for 4 or 5 years and used to store the rating on the Racing Post form pages. So for some horses I'd have a rating for several dozen past races. The rating was for each individual run rather than a master rating for the horse.

What I found was that the ratings themselves were a handy tool and gave me a quick angle into the race

But the main point was that by doing the ratings and then looking at the past ratings for todays runners I was spending time assessing past performances and that gave me a framework to put today's race into a context of what the horses had achieved previously

My main thing has always been looking for patterns in a horse's form and having the ratings helped with that

Re the comp , they'll always be some Long Shot Larry's who'll get lucky with some big price winners , you only have to look at picks for today's NAP to see.

In the 'olden days' you had to provide a few sentences of reasoning with your selection which dissuaded people from pin sticking long shots and trusting to luck

personally I think it was a better competition then and you could see why people picked their horses

on the other hand it did put a lot of people off joining in and the numbers playing were lower

  6. Call me old-fashioned but it's still The Hennessy to me ......

    Newb 3.00

Like the look of Secret Investor at 9/1 bet365

Young horse, 8 years old, has won at Grade 2 level and won a top handicap on seasonal reappearance at Chepstow with the placed horses franking the form. Thrives on decent ground, from the Nicholls yard. Has run well here before, finishing 2nd to Native River in the Denman, Grade 2, in February

There's a whole bunch of horses between 7/1 and 10/1 ....... about 8 of them and the winner will probably come from that group

I wouldn't be surprised if my selection doesn't go off as favourite by race time
