  1. Just seen a story on the Racing Post site ......... Southwell set to abandon Fibresand and replace with Tapeta

I'm not a member so I can't read the story behind the paywall but if the headline is correct I think that would be a great shame

The main attraction of UK racing is the great variation of tracks ........ with different tracks suiting different types of horse. I set great store by having picked up track characteristics over the years and 'track suitability' is an important factor in my form study

Southwell is a unique track, the only fibresand one in the country ...... so if we lose it we lose something that one particular group of horses thrive on and the more that happens the more it becomes difficult for all horses to find conditions which are ideal for them and enable them to win a race. And for punters it takes out an edge in working out which horses will be suited by the track and which won't

I guess it's easier to maintain Tapeta and hence more economic from a course management point of view ........ but now all weather racing will be much of a muchness. If I was the BHA I'd cancel Southwell's fixtures if they went ahead and just give them a share of the existing AW fixtures, so fewer meetings for the other tracks ...... on the basis that we only need so many races run on Tapeta. They can share Wolves and Newcastle's fixtures which are on Tapeta

  2. I think BOG is definitely shrinking with time limits as to when you can avail yourself of it. You can foresee a time when it'll only be available between 10.00 and 10.30 AM on the day of the race !

As for the Naps comp ...... I don't think it matters as long as everyone is treated the same

For the first few years I was doing the Naps comp it was settled at SP ...... that probably made life easier for the admin but it took away part of the 'fun of the chase' which is obtaining a value price

  3. I think one thing you have to think about is - Why are you betting ?

I can't really speak for people who are in it to make money ..... that's never been my focus

My enjoyment has always been in solving the puzzle. Assessing form, factors, coming  to a conclusion and hopefully being proved right. What I've found is that I get just as much satisfaction from being proved right whether I have 2 quid or 20 quid on. In fact with the various racing competitions on PL I rarely bet on horses at all ....... I get the same buzz from posting a winner with no money on it

I got it right, it feels good, have a little skip around the room !

I do bet on football, very small stakes...... but I suspect if we had an equivalent Nap of the Day on football I might even give that up and just get my buzz from the competition

So .......... I only bet with very small stakes and don't worry about losing

So this would be my advice ........ if you're not in it to make money just play with small stakes and get your enjoyment from 'solving the puzzle'
