Be interesting to see if Hollie can get a tune out of her
There's a few unknown (to us) runners which makes selecting difficult ........ The Racing Post have tipped Simsir at 33/1 !
Most of the British and Irish look like horses who have maybe won group or listed races in the past but are struggling to win again now
I'd take a chance on one of the Irish horses - Lady Wannabe at 16/1 Wm Hill EW - was running in group races through the season but has recently found some form with Listed and group 3 wins in her last 2 runs .... might just be an improving type

I watched the race ........ held up at the back, ran on late into 4th place
Looks like the idea was to qualify without giving the handicapper any reason to put him up !

Personally I like small fields
5 or 6 is just about right ....... enough for a race but with less chance of horses being brought down or carried out or getting crowded at the jumps and forcing errors
But mainly it's just so I can look at 5 or 6 races in the time it takes to study one big field handicap ......... more chance of picking a winner!

To be honest I never really look at any races until the night before
There's always 'racing tomorrow' so why bother about racing in two months
I suppose it's evident then that I never do ante-post betting ......... can't remember ever doing one

I have a quick way of putting a rating on recent runs in handicaps
I count a length as 2 pounds
Then if a horse rated 80 gets beat 3 lengths I'll say it 'ran to 74'
then next time out it's mark might have gone down to 78 and it gets beat 1 length and I'll say it 'ran to 76'
If a horse rated 80 wins by 2 lengths I'll say it 'ran to 84'
Gives a quick indication as to where a horse is relative to it's handicap mark ..... and you can look for horses who's 'ran to' figure is gradually improving. If you rate enough of their past races you also might get an idea as to what conditions of track, distance and going they produce their best at
Obviously works best for older handicappers who have lots of back form in the book

I'm sure I saw the eventual winner make a big blunder at one of the early fences when out in front ....... he jumped the fence and sprawled on landing
the commentator didn't mention it (Bartlett on RTV) ..... instead he was talking about a horse at the back of the field making a blunder so maybe he wasn't looking at the front of the race !

To be honest I didn't really fancy that 1.40 at Cheltenham but I couldn't find anything else. Even though it was fairly small field I still thought 4 or 5 of them could win which is no good for this type of bet. I like to pick races where I think only a maximum of 3 can win and then pick my final two from that. I think maybe if you're struggling to find something just have a day off !
