Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! Jonjo O'Neill (Don't Push It 11-10, Synchronised 11-06, Quolibet 10-08, Can't Buy Time 10-04): "Don't Push It is in good form, it's a shame he's got top weight but there's not a lot we can do about that. "There are a lot of better-handicapped horses in there, but it's more about getting him in the mood than what weight he's got. "He really did enjoy it last year, it was a fantastic performance and let's hope he can do the same again. "Synchronised (11st 6lb) has plenty of weight and he wouldn't be as good a racehorse as Don't Push It. He really needs soft ground as well. "Can't Buy Time has a nice racing weight and he would have a live chance. He definitely likes better ground and is a good jumper, although he's not had a lot of luck. "I don't know a lot about Quolibet. He can be a lazy horse but he seems a pretty good jumper. "It looks like he likes soft ground but the good thing is at least he'll get in." Paul Nicholls (Neptune Collonges 11-10, What A Friend 11-06, Taranis 11-00, The Tother One 11-00, Niche Market 10-13, Tricky Trickster 10-10, Just Amazing 10-09, Gullible Gordon 10-06, Ornais 10-04, Meanus Dandy 10-02) "I'll probably have about four runners, of which Niche Market would be the main one. "He's going to run over two and a half miles at Newbury on March 5. The other one I've really trained with the National in mind is Ornais and he'll have another run in a hunter chase at Fontwell. "I knew Neptune Collonges was never going to get in off a light weight and the plan is to go for the Gold Cup, after that I'll have a chat with his owner. "What A Friend (11st 6lb) was just in there in case something happened, I suspect he'll go to Newbury and then the Gold Cup. "Meanus Dandy (10st 2lb) would run if he got in but I'm not sure about Gullible Gordon or Just Amazing." Howard Johnson (Tidal Bay 11st 9lb, Santa's Son 10st 5lb, Royal Rosa, Frankie Figg 10st 3lb, Belon Gale 10st 1lb): "The main aim for Tidal Bay is the Gold Cup so we'll see. "I have schooled him over National fences before and he jumps them like a buck. There's nearly a month between them and he's 10 now but we'll see. He wants a marathon trip these days, which is strange for an Arkle winner. "If he ran, we'd know our fate early. He'll either take to it or tail himself off. "Santa's Son should get in and at this stage he'd be my main hope. He's won a Castleford Chase so he's got a bit of class and he came out of his win at Musselburgh in very good shape. He'll stay. "The others might struggle to get in but we know Frankie Figg loves it there.'' Evan Williams (Deep Purple 11-07, State Of Play 10-06): "Getting below 11st is a massive advantage and it's obviously difficult to slot State Of Play in the handicap, but it's nice he has got a semblance of a turnaround. "It's a realistic weight and every pound will help. The plan has been to go there very very fresh. "Deep Purple's (11st 7lb) owner was keen to enter to see what weight he got. He'll run at Ascot on Saturday and we'll take it from there." Dessie Hughes (Vic Venturi 11st 6lb, In Compliance 10st 5lb): "He's got the same weight as last year. We'll have to put up with it, but I'd have liked to see him with a couple of pounds lower. He'll run in the Bobbyjo next Wednesday. "In Compliance is warming up nicely for it. There's a conditions race coming up for him at Thurles in the next 10 days and he'll probably go there.'' David Pipe (Or Noir De Somoza 11-05, I'msingingtheblues 10-11, Comply Or Die 10-08, Piraya 10-04, Faasel 10-01, Junior 9-12): "We know that Phil is going to try to encourage the high class horses to run by compressing the handicap a little. Even so, five of our six entries are in the handicap proper at this stage and three of them are in the top 40 guaranteeing them a run if we so decide. I am pleased with the weight that Comply Or Die has (10-8) as he won the 2008 Grand National carrying 10-9." Nigel Twiston-Davies (Little Josh 11-03, Grand Slam Hero 10-07, Roll Along 10-07, Hello Bud 10-05, Ballyfitz 9-09) : "Hello Bud must have a hell of a chance and that's Sam's (Sam Twiston-Davies') ride. "Little Josh (11st 3lb) is a two-and-a-half-miler and it might be a year or two too early for him." Donald McCain (Ballabriggs 11st, Sagalyrique 9st 13lb Khachaturian 9st 10lb): "I've no complaints with that for Ballabriggs. He's a Cheltenham Festival winner so it was always going to be around the 11st mark. "The bonus is that Don't Push It is likely to run so the weights aren't going to change at all. I've no complaints. "The other two aren't likely to get in and we're going to the Racing Post Chase with Sagalryique and that will decide where we go after that.'' Gordon Elliott (Backstage 10st 12lb, Nedzer's Return 10st 8lb, Dev 10st): "That will do. Backstage won his point-to-point at the weekend. He might have one run under Rules before the National. "Nedzer's Return qualifies for the Fox Hunter's as well so I'll have to discuss that with the owners. Dev won't get in." Jimmy Moffatt (Chief Dan George 10st 12lb): ''That's a good racing weight. I'd be happy with that, he's off his correct mark. Don't Push It will run so we'll stay under 11st. We don't want to go through that barrier as not too many win above 11st. "He'll have a spin over hurdles at Haydock on Saturday, then he'll go to Cheltenham for the handicap chase he won last year then he'll go to Aintree.'' Philip Hobbs (Fair Along 10-11, Quinz 10-08, From Dawn To Dusk 10-07, Dream Alliance 10-05, The Sliotar 9-08): "I don't think I've got the right horses this year. "Dream Alliance (10st 5lb) has not done anything and will probably run in the cross country at Cheltenham. "If Quinz (10st 8lb) wins the Racing Post Chase he'll have no penalty and would be in with a chance, but it's a long shot." Henrietta Knight (Calgary Bay 10st 10lb): "I suppose that's not too bad a weight and he'll go straight for the National.'' Martin Lynch (Oscar Time 10st 9lb): "It looks like he's rated me a few pounds above my Irish mark which I'm not too happy about given that I haven't run the horse over fences since I've had him. "But, at the end of the day, if he ran he's got less than 11st which is a nice racing weight. After that, you just need all the luck in the world!'' Noel Glynn (Becauseicouldntsee 10st 8lb): "I'd be happy with that, hopefully we get him there now as we had a setback the other week. "He's only a week away from going back into work so he's going the right way. We wouldn't have time for a run so it will be straight there. "I was expecting more so that's a pleasant surprise. He's only eight so hopefully he'll be going back for a few years yet. "I led in Numbersixvalverde for my cousin (Martin Brassil) and we were drunk for a week after that!'' Malcolm Jefferson (King Fontaine 10st 6lb): "That seems all right. Don't Push It will probably run so it won't be going up either. "We want to see how he goes on Saturday (at Haydock) first, that will tell us something. If he isn't in he can't run. He's eight which isn't a bad age for the National. "Everything has to go right between now and then but it would be a handy weight if he ran.'' Alan King (West End Rocker 10st 5lb): "I'm very happy with that. It's a good racing weight so let's just hope things go according to plan on Saturday (at Haydock). Once we get this weekend out of the way we'll start worry about the National after that. "You'd hope he'd get in but I'm not worrying about that just yet.'' James Motherway (Bluesea Cracker 10st 4lb): ''It's a nice racing weight, we can't complain about that. "She's due to run in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse next week. My owners and myself will probably make a decision after that as to whether she'll go to Aintree or not. "My main concern is the ground. She does need some cut, that is my one fear. If it came up too fast she wouldn't take her chance. Most of her best runs have been on soft so we might have to put a back-up plan in place.'' Andrew Parker (Merigo 10st 1lb): "He's got the same rating (137) as last year. He's not altered us so it's going to be a struggle to get in. There are masses of horses above us in the weights so we will just have to see if we are lucky. "He's in great form, I've sat on him this morning. If he doesn't get in, we'll go to Ayr instead for the Scottish National. We'll just have to let fate take his course and see what happens. "He may go to Ayr next week for a novice hurdle just to get that sharpener into him.''

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! One of my main bets :ok Chief Dan George is set for the short trip to Haydock on Saturday to contest the totescoop6 Hurdle, registered as the Rendlesham Hurdle. He will then head to Cheltenham for the Festival Handicap Chase, in which he sprang a 33-1 surprise last March, before going to Aintree in April. "We'll run him over hurdles on Saturday. We were going to run him in the Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster but it was abandoned then we thought about the Aon (at Newbury) the other day, but we thought we'd go to Haydock. It's just down the road," said the Cartmel handler. "It did him the world of good this time last year running him in the Cleeve at Cheltenham before he won over fences at Doncaster. It just sharpened him up. "We'll give him a spin over hurdles and I think he'll run pretty well. There won't be many runners in the Rendlesham and all roads for him lead to the Grand National."

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! Waley-Cohen: Oscar has perfect National profile By James Pugh 6:15PM 15 FEB 2011 IRISH NATIONAL runner up Oscar Time, who was on Tuesday allotted 10st 9lb for the John Smith's Grand National, has the ‘perfect profile' for the Aintree spectacular, according to part-owner Robert Waley-Cohen. RELATED LINKS

The 10-year-old, a general 20-1 chance for the Grand National, has had two runs over hurdles since his second behind Bluesea Cracker at Fairyhouse last April. Waley-Cohen, who owns the horse in partnership with Tote bidder Sir Martin Broughton, said on Tuesday: "He was bought with the specific target of going to the National. He was second in the Irish National last year and Sam rides him. He has the perfect profile." Trainer Martin Lynch, said Oscar Time is likely to go back over fences on his next start. Lynch said: "He's had a couple of runs over hurdles and the plan is to go for the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse and then onto Aintree where he will be entering unknown territory over four and a half miles. "Anything under 11st is what you'd call a racing weight, so 10st 9lb is fairenough although it will represent the highest mark he has raced off over fences."

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! No big surprises really and pretty happy with the weights overall. A bit worried about Mobaasher and One Cool Cookie getting in off 10 stone 3 though. Hopefully they will sneak in. the last couple of years has seen the cut off point at 72ish so fingers crossed they will be ok.

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! Thanks guys :)

Its been an eventful week.

I mentioned that of the horses I hadn’t yet backed, I had my eye on Backstage and West End Rocker.

I have backed both of these this week.

Backstage – if you watch a re-run of last years race was travelling very nicely before being brought down in a melee at the 20th fence. Pretty unlucky. Gordon Elliot has taken a similar approach to Backstage’s preparation to when he won it with Silver Birch a few years ago. He has been campaigned over point-to-point and gained a win last week, which would suggest he is coming to the boil at the right time. He is 5lb “wrong” at th weights which isn’t ideal but 10 stone 12 is a nice weight and I fancy him to run well.

Back - Backstage £17 @ 23.0

West End Rocker has come into his own over the marathon distances this season and is still relatively unexposed. After problems last season, a lot of Alan Kings horses are well handicapped and off a mark of 141, this one could be one of them. I’ve taken 26.0 on him as if he runs a big race at Haydock today that will shorten further.

Back - West End Rocker £10 @ 26.0

Some more lays to report too.

Oscar Time has proved popular since the weights cane out this week and went as short as 17.5. a good time to lay off.

Lay – Oscar Time £47 @ 17.5

I managed to get my money out of Taranis too, who is looking an unlikely runner.

Lay – Taranis £11.40 @ 210.0

Lay – Taranis £2 @ 250.0

Layed some more off Ballytrim too.

Latest table is very encouraging and gives me a £60 surplus to play with :ok

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! Mobaasher, Big Fella Thanks, Chief Dan George and West End Rocker all run today. I have 14/1 on Carruthers at Haydock today, which is looking good as he is 11/2 favourite now. Hopefully I can win back some of the money I lost backing him for the Grand National. :hope

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! A mixed bag at the weekend. Big Fella Thanks ran a good trial I thought, staying on ok behind better class horses. Chief Dan George was pretty uninspiring over hurdles but I’d expect him to come on for that and put up a better show over fences at Cheltenham. West End Rocker was undone by the ground. He has drifted to a silly price in the 40’s now which is an overreaction and represents good value. Kicking myself for taking a short pricebut hindsight is a wonderful thing. Mobaasher returned to fences and didn’t want to know - running a poor race. Whether it was the return to fences he didn’t like or something else, we will find out in his next run but either way is wasn’t particularly encouraging for a horse that had previously been in good form. The big market mover was of course Silver by Nature who is now vying for favouritism. I dont think he represents great value at the moment – He still isnt certain to run, the owners wife isnt keen, he looks soft ground dependent and much of his victory on the weekend was down to only 4 of the field finishing the slog. I cant bring myself to back antepost but may do once we have an idea of what the ground will be like – he has a nice weight and would be a danger to all. The Bobbyjo looks a cracking trial tomorrow with most of the main hopefuls from Ireland lining up: Oscar Time Vic Venturi Bluesea Cracker The Midnight Club Arbor Supreme

A mixed bag at the weekend. The Bobbyjo looks a cracking trial tomorrow with most of the main hopefuls from Ireland lining up: Oscar Time Vic Venturi Bluesea Cracker The Midnight Club Arbor Supreme
Midnight shines in Bobbyjo horse_racing_media_3-0.jpg The Midnight Club jumped to the head of the Grand National market with a fine staying performance in the At The Races Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse. Sent off the 11-10 favourite after finishing second in the Thyestes Chase, The Midnight Club moved powerfully for Paul Townend and was bang there heading to the final fence. The strong-travelling Oscar Time looked a huge threat but failed to pick up as expected and The Midnight Club saw it out well to hold off stable companion Arbor Supreme by a length. The Grade Two contest has been a fine Aintree trial down the years, with The Midnight Club's former stable companion Hedgehunter notably winning this prize en-route to glory in the Merseyside showpiece in 2005. William Hill were suitably impressed and make The Midnight Club the new 12-1 favourite for the Grand National from 14-1. Mullins said: "I'm happy with both horses. The Midnight Club came on nicely from his Thyestes run and it is nice to see Arbor Supreme come back into a bit of form. "The Midnight Club probably showed normal improvement from his first run of the season and we're now happy that we're on track with both horses for the Grand National. They are unlikely to run again before that." Oscar Time's trainer Martin Lynch was not too disappointed with the performance of his charge, adding: "He's Aintree-bound and we're very happy - he jumped super. That was the first time Sam (Waley-Cohen) rode him in public over fences. "There's still a bit of fine-tuning to be done. He's not the biggest and it was important that Sam got a feel of the scope the horse has to jump. We'll see how he comes out of this but I'd imagine he'll head straight to Aintree. That's always been the plan."

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! Ive backed the first 4 at varying degrees: The Midnight Club, Arbor Supreme, Oscar Time and Vic Venturi and also the 6th - Bluesea Cracker. Satisfied with the result in all, it doesnt affect too much other than Arbor Supreme has halved in price to 30.0 ish. In Compliance runs today in the 155 at Thurles over a trip that is likely to be too short.

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! In Compliance won well today leading from start to finish and jumping well. I dont know how much it tells us re: the National other than he is in form, which is an obvious plus - first time blinkers today - expect to see those retained for the big one! However the trip was 2m 2f - half of the trip he will tackle at Aintree so stamina doubts remain. He has the pedigree to stay (he is an old Vic - sire of Comply or Die and Dont Push It) and was staying on when 5th in the Topham over the National fences, so we know he likes the track. I wouldnt put anyone off backing him each way, especially now the blinkers seem to have sparked him into life. He should get into the race off 139.

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! Bad news on Mobaasher :sad I pulled up Mobaasher in the Grand National trial as he simply didn’t enjoy running back over fences. Simple as that. We’ll now revert to hurdles and the Pertemps at the Festival looks a likely option. It means I don’t have a ride in the National at the moment, but the race is a long way off and hopefully something will materialise. From Aiden Coleman's blog. Shame....

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! From Sporting Life concerning Oscar Time, The Midnight Club, Vic Venturi and In Compliance ---------------------------------------------- OSCAR LOOKS BIG PLAYER By Ryan McElligott Grand National: The Midnight Club 10/1 The Midnight Club (IRE) Profile W P Mullins Profile Click here to follow us on Twitter! Click here for more racing news While thoughts turning almost exclusively towards the impending Cheltenham Festival, Ireland may have witnessed a highly significant John Smith's Grand National Trial last week as The Midnight Club landed the Grade 2 At The Races Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse. The race, which produced last year's Aintree runner-up Black Apalachi, played host to several live challengers for the Liverpool spectacular and coming out on top was the Willie Mullins inmate who followed up his highly encouraging reappearance second in the Thyestes Chase. There was much to like about the performance of The Midnight Club and particularly pleasing was the manner in which he was able to contain the late challenge of his stablemate Arbor Supreme. The ten-year-old is deservedly a leading ante post fancy for Liverpool and he can be expected to play a major role there. In addition with just eight runs over fences to his name he is likely to be one of the least exposed runners in this year's Grand National. The runner-up, Arbor Supreme, posted easily his best effort of the season and this represented a resounding return to form on his part. Quite eye catching was the run of the third placed Oscar Time who looked to be going best of all nearing the last two fences. He just couldn't pick up on the testing ground though and had to settle for a minor role on this occasion. Last season's Paddy Power Chase winner and Irish National runner-up was making his first appearance over fences this season and his performance understandably left his connections delighted with his display. A sound jumper and a strong traveller who goes on much better ground, He will be a big player in the John Smith's Grand National. Back in fourth was Vic Venturi who won the 2009 renewal of the Beecher Chase and was brought down at Aintree last year. He ran a perfectly respectable race and it is worth pointing out that he was conceding weight to the three horses that finished in front of him. While Vic Venturi's trainer Dessie Hughes will be unable to rely on Black Apalachi at Liverpool this year, he will have another representative to field as In Compliance bounced back to form in first time blinkers to trounce his rivals in a comnditions chase at Thurles on Thursday - admittedly he was left a long way clear when the chasing favourite Quiscover Fontaine came down at the second last. The application of blinkers certainly seemed to invigorate In Compliance and he did run quite respectably in the Topham Chase at Aintree last season although his stamina would be an issue in the Grand National.

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! It's the first forfeit stage today and judging by the drift on a couple of my selections, they have been left out (Neptune Collonges, Mobaasher, Taranis). All 3 expected, to be fair. I'll update when the official announcement is made. :ok

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! Backstage cut for Grand National glory after win By Tony O'Hehir 4:39PM 6 MAR 2011 THE Gordon Elliott-trained Backstage was made joint-favourite for the John Smith's Grand National with Totesport at 12-1 on the back of his second point-to-point victory of the season on Sunday when successful at The Pigeons. RELATED LINKS

Victor Chandler also cut the nine-year-old to 12-1 behind The Midnight Club in their market, as the stayer completed his competitive preparation for the Aintree showpiece. Jamie Codd rode the nine-year-old to a seven-length win at the County Westmeath venue. "Backstage won with his head in his chest and won't run again until Aintree, " said Elliott. Sunday's win was the sixth point-to-point success of Backstage's career. He was tracking the leaders in the Grand National a year ago when he unseated his rider after being badly hampered at the 20th fence.Elliott is no stranger to using the point-to-point route for a Grand National fancy, with Silver Birch taking in a similar contest at Castletown-Geoghegan in his National-winning season in 2007.

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! I had a £50 surplus at the time of the last update but I got a bit excited he other night and used it all up :lol

Here’s where it went.

Character Building: £7 @ 48.0

I‘ve been on the verge of backing him all season and made a couple of u-turns but I wanted to see him give a performance that suggested he was back in form and it came last weekend when a decent staying on 3rd in the Grimthorpe last week.

He was 7th last year after an interrupted prep, which was a respectable effort and gives him valuable course experience. If you look at his form the previous year, he won on his 6th outing of the season suggesting he may take a while to bring to the boil. With a proper prep and Aintree looking like his 6th run this season, he is overpriced.

Silver By Nature £8 @ 18.5

I ignored him to start with as the aim was the Scottish National but after his victory in the Grand National trial at Haydock, connections have had a rethink and he will now run at Aintree. He is well in after that victory and has several pieces of decent form over long distances. Almost all of that has come on rain softened ground, however I remember ignoring Silver Birch a few years back because I thought he wanted soft ground – oops! Aintree will water if it gets too firm wont they? Safety of the horses and all that?”

Big Fella Thanks £10 @ 23.0

Another who I havent been able to make my mind up about but I think is worth an interest. Despite finishing 6th as a novice and 4th last year, he still has definite stamina doubts, as he seemed to tire when it mattered in both of those races. It isnt unreasonable to think that he may have acquired more stamina reserves as he gets older. I remember Hedgehunter tiring in the closing stages on his first attempt in the National but saw the trip out better as he got older. Its more hope than expectation but he loves the course and has run two decent preps recently. Having backed him the last two years, I’ll be p!ssed off if he wins this year and I’m not on.

The Tother One £10 @ 60.0

A bit worryingly, this one makes a lot of jumping errors, but I think that has been factored into the price. He has been noted as “staying on” in almost every run and should be thereabouts if he gets round. Was thought of as a Welsh Grand National type but the ground went against him. However, a staying on 4th behind Diamond Harry in the Hennessy cant be ignored.

The Midnight Club £20 @ 13.0

An opportunity missed with this one as I orignally backed him at 50.0 only to lay him off at 40.0. I wasn’t going to back him but he is too hard to ignore and I have swallowed my pride.

He has had a perfect National prep, winning the Bobbyjo Chase after a close 2nd behind Synchronised in the Thestes chase where a mistake at the final fence probably cost him victory.

He had high quality form last year, mixing it with the likes of Kempes and China Rock, which would make his mark in the low 140’s look lenient.

Lay - Ballabriggs £5 @ 16.0

I could live to regret laying Ballabriggs so heavily but he doesn’t look particularly well handicapped to me and has stamina issues judging by his all out win at Cheltenham last year. I backed him at a price of 35/1 on the assumption I could lay him when he shortened and free up some funds. I have succeeded in that and left myself with a small profit if I’m wrong and he wins.

Re: The "All Green" Grand National 2010 - NOW INCLUDING 2011!! A couple of developments since Cheltenham: Yesterday: Back - What a Friend £8 @ 55.34 betfair Will now go for the race on good ground, Nicholls has confirmed. Ran a great trial in the Gold Cup, staying on to nearly nick 3rd from Kauto Star on the run in. That performance makes his rating of 156 look very lenient and off 11 stone 6lbs he must have a great chance. Obviously, this had put me back into the red, so I took the decision to lay a bit from my bigger winners to fund the What a Friend bet. Lay - Oscar Time £3 @ 14.5 Still £600+ profit on this one. If I fancy any others between now and the day of the race, i'll probably extract it from here. Lay - In Compliance £2 @ 70.0 I fancy him as a live outsider, but thats it really so happy to reduce the profit a bit. Lay - Backstage £3 @ 17.0 I like him but 16/1 is a fair price to lay off at. Too short really. This morning: Lay - What a Friend £8 @ 23.0 betfair I was going to leave the bet at 55.0 going but its nagging me a bit that his run will be ground dependant - it needs good ground. So with a run not 100% guaranteed, it makes sense to lay off at this shorter price. It locks in a free bet of about 31/1 so pretty happy with that and it gives me £8 to play with between now and the race.
