Lille vs St Etienne

The extended Ligue 1 week of action flows into this evening and we're keeping the party going by taking a look at the early season battle between Lille and St Etienne that is scheduled to kick-off at 6pm BST in the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. These two sides have had slightly contrasting starts to their league campaigns so winning this game will be particularly desirable to both of them for different reasons.

Lille finished runners-up last season behind PSG in the league and it was felt that with a decent summer of transfer activity then Christophe Galtier's side could improve to become serious contenders to the reigning champions' crown. Unfortunately, the season has not started the way their fans would have liked with just 1 win and 1 loss so far. It means the Great Danes are already 6 points off the title pace heading into this game.

St Etienne are seeing more positive results. Ghislain Printant has witnessed his team win 1 and draw 1 of their two league matches. Building on last season's 4th placed finish is the priority this season under their new head coach. This match will be the club's toughest test as they come up against their old manager in Galtier. During Galtier's reign, the club won the 2012/13 Coupe de la Ligue. That saw Galtier share the Ligue 1 Manager of the Year with Carlo Ancelotti that very same season. All nostalgia will be forgotten for the duration of this game though.

The departures of Nicolas Pepe, Youssouf Kone, and Thiago Mendes have clearly had a negative impact on Lille and the fact they played the majority of their last game against Amiens with just 10 men. Their home form last season was crucial in their progress and they'll be thinking the same this season. St Etienne will not be easy to put down after an unbeaten run of 6 away matches but this Lille side will want to bounce back to winning ways and start looking at the top-end of the table again.
