Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August This will be a tough set of fixtures to call, as it's the first time I can remember the competition being the first round of the season. Usually there are some decent value bets to be had, but as there is no form to speak of, winners will be harder to call.... GL all :ok

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August Actually having said that, initially I would suggest that anything above evens is a decent shout for Plymouth at home to Pompey. Our troubles have been well documented, and a deadline of tomorrow (which may be extended) has been set to offload or renegotiate the contracts of the last couple of senior pros on our books, notably Kanu and Liam Lawrence. That leaves us with zero players signed. It's all really up in the air because we don't know when and if the CVA will be ratified, and our takeover will be completed. That must happen before we can sign any players. I understand Michael Appleton has several players lined up to sign contracts, and we have around three youth players that are good enough for first team duty, and will be used during the course of the following season. This is definitely one to watch as it very much relies on when we are given the green light to sign players, and as this game is only on Tuesday, I would be concerned at the timings. I am however surprised this game has been put up, and can not see that price of 2.8 on Plymouth holding much longer. We will have a much better idea on where we are with things by the time we face Bournemouth. Tuesday night is just too tight.

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August Should add as well though that the Plymouth fans are having a special Pompey day, where they will be raising funds and they are asking all fans to sing the Pompey chimes during the game. Should be a really good atmosphere, and credit to those Plymouth fans for organising it...

This will be a tough set of fixtures to call' date=' as it's the first time I can remember the competition being the first round of the season. Usually there are some decent value bets to be had, but as there is no form to speak of, winners will be harder to call.... GL all :ok[/quote'] Yes a slightly different dynamic this year going into round 1, as always we should try and get hold of some manager interviews and see how seriously they will be taking things. I don't see too many clubs resting players tbh as coaches will surely see this competetive fixture as a platform for their season. I have a couple on my shortlist for this round: Bury V Middlesbrough @ 5/6 - The exit of Barker couldn't have come at a worst time for Bury who see their already tepid pre-season preperations take a massive setback. Boro's main aim will ofcourse be promotion but they have a squad big enough for rotation with some of the fringe players out to impress Mowbray. Walsall V Brentford (To Qualify) @ 4/5 - Walsall are another club with limited resources, it's been a summer of personnel upheaval for them so it may take some time for the squad to settle down and start gelling. Not too many changes for Brentford over the summer with 1 or 2 nice additions, Rosler is a stickler for preperation and the Bee's pre-season has gone well thus far. No problems on their travels in 2011-2012 so perhaps a bit of value on the TQ going in to this one. Be good to get peeps thoughts on these.

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August I personally like Sheffield United so far. Boss Danny Wilson said he is looking forward to start with a win on Saturday and hopes for lots of supporters to drive them to the next round on the club's family day. Burton had a bad season also last year and friendlies didn't go very well either with them losing 5 games out of six. I think Sheffield is a class above Burton here and if they really want to give their supporters a win, they should easily do it today. Sheffield should also have a full squad at their disposal while Burton on the other hand has couple of injuries to be worried with. I like Sheffield United to win @ 1,50. Good luck!

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August Doncaster v York This should be a hard fought Yorkshire derby. This time last year, the two clubs were three divisions apart. 12 months on and it's down to one division. Doncaster were relegated from the Championship after a terrible run, and York were promoted back to the league via the playoffs. So now, it's League One v League Two. I'd make Doncaster favourites for this, but they seem too short at current odds and York too long. York won their last five away games at the end of last season. If momentum carries over from last season, York look better placed - http://uk.soccerway.com/matches/2012/08/11/england/league-cup/doncaster-rovers-fc/york-city-fc/1292766/ Best 3-way market odds; Doncaster 1.94 Draw 3.66 York 4.5 I think the two teams odds should be quite a bit closer than this, and York are good value. I'd back York in the 2-way Draw No Bet market - York Draw No Bet 3.2 Paddy Power

Looks like our takeover won't be completed until at least early next week with a deadline of midday Monday being set to make any signings. The budget is still to be agreed with Michael Appleton unsure of how many players will be afforded. He's admitted he may be forced to play the youth if nothing is agreed in time. I personally think we'll be given the green light to make some signings. Whether we can make eleven new signings in the space of 24 hours is debate able.

Personally I'd steer clear of any short priced favourites this round because this is in effect, the first game of the new season. So I would expect shocks, with at least one high priced 'dog' winning. Picking that winner will obviously be tough, but I think teams news is overrated here, and news from some teams saying they're putting out "strong" sides shouldn't be seen as a strong indication of their chances if winning. First days are often tough, but as this is also the cup it makes it even tougher.

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August Crewe V Hartlepool OVER 2.5 goals @ 1.85 - BET365. I think this is a fair price as Crewe are generally an overs side, and with this being the cup I can see a fairly open contest here with both sides unlikely to be contesting this as they would a league fixture. I tend to think we will see more goals today as this is the first game of the season, and the first time this cup competition will kick off at 3pm on a Saturday.

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August I see Aldershot are missing four senior players, which I would discount personally because I'm not sure that the general quality across the team is that hugely differing. Prior to last season, Wolves don't have that stunning a record in the cup, especially against lower league sides, and Aldershot did knock out West Ham last season. Because this is an afternoon kick off, I think it's a tough one to call as there really isn't anything to go on. Wolves also have a new manager and should hand a few players their début, which would put me off. Regarding Leeds, they are potentially able to hand a début today to ten new players, which again would put me off as there are lots of unknowns.

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August Such a shame that these are the first matches of the season as they do throw up good value, but it's just impossible to have any confidence behind anything with no games to go on. I'll be keeping my powder dry until we have more info/stats. :ok

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August If I were to make a judgement call on all these fixtures, I'd stick to backing goals as I think a lot of sides will play with less fear, and will generally be a little more open. The fact this is a 3PM kick off means you can pretty much discount previous years records, as the circumstances are different, and there is a difference between afternoon and evening kick offs. No further bets for me as across the board lots of sides will be handing multiple débuts. This round is harder to call IMO than the first day league matches.

FT score at 90 mins: Doncaster 1 York 1 (playing extra time at the moment) Bet void The online stats I saw showed both teams had roughly the same number of shots and attacks, which means York were good value at the longer price, so I am happy the bet was good value.

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August Oldham v sheff wed monday 7.45 i have had a look at the player goal minutes quotes for wednesday players and one that stands out is miguel llera who can be bought at 4 with sporting index. Llera became something of a cult hero last year playing in a head guard and scoring a few crucial goals towards the end of the season. He is a 6'4" centre half who takes free kicks from outside the box and poses a threat at set pieces. He scored 4 from 15 last year and finished the season with a flourish. He had 5 or 6 goalscoring opportunities in the final game. He may not play as jones is unlikely to pick his first choice side but if he doesn't start the bet is void. HE is 6 to buy with spreadex incidentally. selection : buy llera goal minutes at 4 with sporting index

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August a bit more team news: Gary madine has been injured and not featured recently so doubt he will be risked i hear he has only just started training. This leaves o'grady and maguire as the likely strikers neither is prolific so value elsewhere-midfield/defense. Semedo if he plays hardly ever scores, the same can be said of prutton. Apart from the previously mentioned llera, reda johnson scores on a regular basis (from left back last year). He can also play centre-back is good in the air but liable to the odd silly mistake so unlikely to be played in the middle. Kieran lee has been injured but came from oldham so likely to play if fit-he gets forward well but wont score many. Michail antonio has signed from reading and will be one of the key players this year-he scores regularly. So at the prices reda johnson and llera pose a threat, antonio will also do so-pecnik and jones value and o'grady maguire no value at around 6 or 7. I hope it's a good game oldham play decent football as do wednesday now megson has departed. This is a potential shock if jones puts out too weak a team but i would still hope wednesday would have enough to prevail. Jordan Slew is ex sheffield united so will be trying his best to score-good luck all....

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August Be careful if your looking to back my team tomorrow,Huddersfield. We have 5 key players out on international duty and one of them is Rhodes, the others Joel Lynch Wales,Murray Wallace Scotland,Oliver Norwood Northern Ireland and Sean Scannell Rep Ireland.

I'm looking at backing under 2.5 goals in the fleetwood v forest game tonight. I'm surprised the unders are priced around evens with BET365. I consider both sides to be underish sides, and I think fleetwood will put up a significant fight at home that will make life tough for forest. I fancy this to finish as a tight draw in the 90 minutes.

Ok, there is a deadline of 12 noon today for registering any new players. I don't think in a million years we're going to get anything sorted in the next two hours. However we can sign loan players and register them for tomorrow nights game up to three hours before the 7.45 kick off. I don't know the specific rules for the league cup, but I would assume a maximum of five loan players can play in the side. It may be that we can sign five loan players, but only three can start or something. Either way, it is still cutting things extremely fine. Goalkeeper will be the biggest issue as we don't have any. We had trialist Joel Santiago in goal on Saturday in a 2-1 loss away to Salisbury. It has been announced that he and defender jerel ifil are not going to be offered extended trial periods at the club, so I don't know what we will be doing for a goalkeeper. The only hope I have us that maybe the league see our situation and allow us to make some temporary signings. As this is the league we're talking about I'm not holding my breath. That will mean we will have to put out a team made up mainly of academy players. We do have a smattering of talent in the youth squad. Youngster Sam magri has been on trial with Liverpool, and is an England youth international. Striker Ashley Harris has played in the first team last season, but he didn't play on saturday in that 2-1 loss to Salisbury, so I don't know what the situation is there. Either way I can't see us getting anything at Plymouth, which makes the 2.20 on offer with BET365 for the home side astonishing really. Might be a bit cutthroat to some but I'll be having some of that. Really surprised the game is still on offer.

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August I'm quite shocked that the bookies are offering such a good price on Plymouth as well. Are they getting a bit slack? Same with Coventry who are being offered at 11/10 by Paddy Power to beat Dagenham and Redbridge.Fair enough the suffered relegation last season but Dagenham didn't have a great season last time out nor have they made any significant signings,so why the good price?Do they know something we don't?

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August Arterrier, judging by our shambolic performances in pre-season against non-league sides Nuneation (0-1) and Wrexham (1-4), 11/10 isn't necessarily the good price you think it is. In fact I wouldn't touch us at that to be honest. The Wrexham game especially was just awful, with our only goal coming right at the death. And yes, it was our first team. Thanks Jase for the Pompey news. Plymouth already down to 2.05 on Bet365, I think your post has finally woken up the bookies.

Re: Capital One Cup > Saturday 11th August - Tuesday 14th August Tonight's TV preview: 4pts Sheffield Wednesday to beat Oldham 11/10 Coral Dave Jones has a good cup pedigree having taken Cardiff to the FA Cup final and Stockport to the semi finals of this competition in the past and he will make sure his side are fully up for this. Oldham should go fairly well in League One but they look to have the potential to be outclassed in this one and I’m happy to take Sheffield Wednesday at odds against here. Will they be back for the Friday match. Surely Cardiff have lost a few internationals?
If your talking about Huddersfield, yes they will be back for Friday at Cardiff. Cheers Simmo,I'm quite shocked at what you've got to say. Thought Thorn had made some reasonable signings during the summer.
