StevieDay1983
Union Berlin vs Erzgebirge Aue Bundesliga II gets the limelight this weekend with the Bundesliga not set to start until next week. Here, I'm previewing Union Berlin against Erzgebirge Aue that is a 2:30pm kick-off this Sunday at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei. One team hoping to progress and challenge for promotion whilst the other is simply hoping to consolidate. Last season, Union Berlin finished in a respectable 8th place. It is a club that holds a fond place in the hearts of many football fans who can relate to its struggles competing against the bigger Hertha Berlin. Urs Fischer will be hoping additions such as Sebastian Andersson from Kaiserslautern, Florian Hubner from Hannover, and Rafal Gikiewicz from Freiburg will strengthen the squad. Although losing Steven Skrzybski to Schalke is a big blow. Erzgebirge Aue won their relegation play-off to stay in Bundesliga II. Daniel Meyer will be looking to improve on the poor campaign in 2017/18 led by former head coach Hannes Drews. Fans are firmly expecting another relegation battle. Last season's top scorer Pascal Kopke has departed the club for Hertha Berlin. Meyer will hope the young loan signings of Emmanuel Iyoha from Dusseldorf and Maximilian Pronichev from Hertha Berlin can compensate for this loss of goals. These are two sides that hold contrasting ambitions. One side looking up. The other side looking down. I would be very surprised if Union Berlin didn't start the season with a solid win here. I fear for Erzgebirge Aue this season. Unless young players mature quickly then it could be a long and tiresome campaign ending in relegation. It is a club that repeatedly finds itself fighting against the tide and refuses to learn from its experiences in previous seasons.
