Not a race. They just stood there at the start no one wanted to even canter. Pedestrian pace early suited only one horse, Barwell Bridge the flat horse. Probably won't even rate this race as it was a total farce.

Final times don't tell the full story though mate. A sprint finish after a dawdling early gallop can lead the clock to lie. I almost never look at final times, yet pace/sectionals are something I study every day. Besides it's not that I think the race was of poor quality, it's just bare form (especially proximities) are suspect due to the lack of pace significantly helping one horse - I'd worry any ratings would be misleading to future race assessments. Googoo and Hector's are pretty paceless and Causeway King wasn't good/quick enough to win on the flat - the lack of early pace was totally against all three. Googoo especially who didn't show any form at all on the flat until campaigned over 1m6f+. Barwell Bridge is totally different to this trio, a dual 10f winner on the flat, decent form at a mile and wasn't even disgraced over the sharp 6f (!) at Goodwood. For me it was very apparent early that there was only going to be one horse to benefit. Another thing I've learnt from Anak and McCoy is that a pedestrian early gallop can cause some novices to make jumping errors - you'd think it was the opposite wouldn't you? The winner is probably useful but today he was undoubtedly flattered - he may improve and beat them all in the same way off a proper gallop of course. :ok

Actually thinking about it I will rate the race but put in a few x's here and there so the ratings can be treated with caution. I do agree with you about Googoo though, even taking the above into consideration I do think we have him a little too high.

I don't wish to play in today's race at the prices but I do think it's time to play ante-post for the Triumph. I went with the 14/1 (Tote) about Mille Chief earlier today but unfortunately that has now gone. Only 1/2pt staked though. Poxy weather. The 5lb penalty carried by Anak could make the difference here. Watergate has to be respected, bought from the Prescott yard for 85,000gns - a few ex-Prescott horses have gone on to make decent hurdlers. That said I'm not in the habit of backing Nicholls' first-timers as they rarely represent value. Will wait to see how they bet but there could be EW value here, or W/O fav value. Anak has been matched for £9 at 17.50 on Betfair, clearly a misclick from someone, be nice if any more of that is offered!

He should've been shorter than Ciceron and I couldn't see both debutants performing well. I also thought he may show better without headgear (6l winner on flat without) and for the first time he was in a real test, unlike his previous runs at lesser tracks where there were four/five runners walking for the early stages. So in way, for me, it was like he was FTO today if that makes sense, although you can never be confident carrying a penalty so it wasn't a massive bet or anything. I've had high hopes for him since day one. Oxx said that anything he does over 2m is a bonus and both AP and TS got off and said he needs 3m/futher than 2m, therefore to win under a penalty over 2m is very pleasing, despite the experts once again crabbing him. Only downside was that I wasn't there. :eyes

Alaivan clearly run below his best when 2nd to him LTO too. Best I ignore the Irish form at this stage and deal with it when they come over. Not far behind Blue Tango that day and if she can improve once again she should run better than the markets suggests. Her price is probably 40pts too big, more so on Betfair where she is 100, although her place prospects rely solely on the front-two underperforming. Thanks mate. I agree, although I expect Anak to be closer to Weslin' Winds if they meet again, he was giving him 3lb at Plumpton and hit a few. He looked and jumped like a different horse from the front and without headgear on Saturday. ;)

Diktalina won very comfortably, franking the Westlin' Winds/Anak form, and indirectly the Mille Chief form. The Saucy Snipe run better than the market suggested and it briefly looked like she was capable of playing a part in the finish - she was 5th in the end but by far the best of the four rags. 0.5pt staked, 1.02pts returned.
