UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we?

Recommended Posts

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? Been meaning to post on this thread for a while, but never had the time or forgot! Anyhow, my name is Kevin, I live in Surrey (or my post goes there) but am originally from South Africa. Came over here in 1986 with my parents who have always been involved with racing back home. Worked on course with several bookmakers but always hated my role as a ghofar as felt I was better than that and deserved more. Learned how to price up races (with help from a very good bookmaking friend) and now run a group of traders/layers with Falbrav on here. We also price races up for several private bookmakers and that's the bread and butter. Betfair has been the best invention since the last one and I made an amazing amount of money in the early stages with my bot cleaning up on the overrounds - couldn't believe you could lay the race at around 102% (average) and back the race at around 98% (average) quite regularly. Anyhow, people got clever and all started doing it and it settled down after around 2 years. Thank god I got in first. Now based in West Sussex with Falbrav where we have a little office to work from and it's a good driving distance from all the local tracks. Very busy most of the time, but love my job and wouldn't change it for the world. That's about it really, a great website and the best website for fans of horse racing and sport in general.

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? Hi, I'm Andy, 24 from London. Been betting since I was old enough to (and maybe a couple of times before that!) but only really got into the horses recently. More often than not I have a few quid on the football at the weekend and try and squeeze in a Lucky 15 a few times a week on the horses (is there a L15 competition anywhere on the boards, if not would anyone be interested in one?) with some success. Don't really have a system as such just keep my eye on the form and go with what I think. Biggest successes have come through the horses with my biggest wins coming in at around £800 off a few Lucky 15's and doubles.Biggest disappointment was losing a 13 team accy worth 15k during my first week of University because of a last minute Reading goal. I'll always hate Reading just because of that. I used to have a FOBT problem which took me a while to get over but I now see them for the devil that they are. If anyone needs a bit of advice or a kind word about these machines please don't hesitate. I run a fantasy football based game on a couple of other sites (would there also be any interest in that here?) and am a moderator at another so fairly well versed in forum life! Thats about your lot from me.

I'd be interested in your fantasy footy game. I used to do play by mail years ago and won the Premier League with Liverpool. :) Welcome to the site. :ok

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? Hello everyone, Followed horse racing on and off for a few years but have really started getting into it a bit more deeply since I was at Ascot watching Danedream pick up the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth stakes last year. Of course I'm far from being an expert, just learning and picking things up as I go and hope this forum will assist in expanding my knowledge. Cheers.

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? Hi,Hope i will be able to contribute here as i find this forum very productive and has some very knowledgeable forerunners. I was a member here before but forgot my username or password since that was in early 2005 lol. Had moved overseas then to singapore precisely and took a break from gambling until i was settled. There was some good punters around then but that was mainly for football. I am more of a racing man but football is still in the blood:P Cheers

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? I will never forget that name billy and ted:) I was rooting for dessie but decided not to bet on him as i found it too short so stayed away from betting on the race until... My son keep telling me to bet norton's coin as he find the name amusing so as all good fathers,I throwed in a tenner. Turning for home and i was still thinking the great dessie will do it and before the last fence i honestly thought norton's coin going to fall. How he proved me wrong and gave me the biggest price winner ever in my life. It felt strange but every year since then i only bet what my son tells me to in the gold cup lol. His strike rate felt badly though as he had picked only 2 more winners of the gold cup since then haha. He almost did it again with go ballistic which was 66/1 but finished second. Anyway,Good to see PL has expanded well over the years. cheers

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? Never even noticed this thread! My names Scott, I'm 22 year old and from the west of Scotland. Been gambling since I was 15/16 :spank due to my height and older looks. I used to bet in the independent bookies down the main street seeing as the old women could barely see. £1 accumulators at the weekend haha. First win I can remember was £10 off my first wage on Rangers to beat Celtc away at 3/1 after Walter Smith had just came in to steady the ship. Ugo Ehiogu scored an overhead kick and we won 1-0. Then not long after that I won around £150 with a £1.50 bet on McFadden to score and Scotland to beat France in Paris. Get the occasional both teams to score coupon up nowadays but don't really focus on football betting as much. Started betting on the horses occasionally when at college in 2006. There was a jockey me and my mate always looked out for an I can't remember his name which is frustrating (may have been someone Robinson or Robertson). Whenever I did bet I used my old uncles process of top jockey/top trainer at the meeting to varying success. Never really got serious on them till I joined this forum about a year and a half ago. I'm getting to the point now where I'm looking at cards everyday and learning more about the racing so should be more involved over this flat season. Biggest horse win was probably Colour Vision in the Gold Cup last year. Won a few hundred off doubles and singles. I do prefer the flat racing and definitely have more success betting on it. Cheers.

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? My names Steve (hard to guess from my cunning user id) I have just passed the big five oh and have been able to retire early so will be devoting more time to my punting on horses and football in future. Got off to a bad start, my first post received a warning as I was looking for objective information about a commercial Horse Racing product..lesson learned! Everybody likes to brag about their best wins soooo - my only two 66-1 winners were Sibton Abbey at early prices in the 1992 Hennessy and a really really obscure horse called Groomsman that won the first ever evening NH race at Ascot (don't remember the date, but I do remember the look on the cashiers face when I handed the slip over). Because of never having much spare cash to bet with back in the day I am temperamentally a longshot player. Five quid on an even money winner meant nothing, but five quid on a 12-1 shot was food for the week! Thanks to modern technology and the vast amount of available information I have managed to test hundreds of simple angles and satisfied myself that there really is no 'system' that is going to provide guaranteed results year in year out. Anybody believing you can find such a money spinner from beaten favourites, last time out winners, horses running within x days, top weights in handicaps or any other combination of factors is living in a dreamworld. The only way to win is to apply what the Americans call 'Handicapping' to the races you are interested in and only bet when you are getting favourable odds, even then the top American gamblers rely on hitting big scores in forecasts/tricasts and the occassional longshot to provide their profits..a different mindset to the average punter who can't put up with losing runs of more than 3 or 4 and cling to the safety provided by the strike rate of short priced horses, even though they don't make you any money! Sorry for rambling, looking forward to some good gambling discussions!

Welcome all newcomers! Looks like we could be in for an active and enjoyable flat season at PL :clap
Things certainly seemed to have perked up a little around here with the start of the flat season :cow

Yep, those with poor taste coming out of the woodwork :p To be fair I've been disappointed with this jumps season for a few reasons (weather, favourite horses being injured, poor Cheltenham personally) even though it's been okay financially. Am looking forward to the flat more than usual!

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? Still learning this game, and have yet to get beyond small interest stakes, but have build up alot of good info from this forum and these guys:ok Some of the big things I've learned are not to bet every day, ignore those short priced favs, the going is the most important thing in racing and pay attention to everything!!..Your all a great help so thanks for the tips.

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? Hi everyone, Joe 36 here living just outside Dublin. My sports are horseracing (GB and Ireland only) and tennis. I have some connections but rely on my own judgement usually. I have been to most of the Irish tracks and and Windsor and understand the workings of the Irish system very well. In the past I have had some great wins but my problem was that I didn't have a proper staking plan. Now I do and it's a matter of backing it up with discipline. My belief is that profit is the most important thing and once you have your maximum bet according to your staking plan, you cannot go wrong. I am not afraid of having it down either but will usually weigh up the pros and cons before risking anything. My favourite races are novice chases on the jumps and pattern races on the flat. I find that very often you can find one horse in these races that are way out in front on form. My knowledge of english racing is not the same, although it is ok. I like trends and stats as well as form as they do not lie. My motto is, do not bet unless you think you will win and NO FUN BETS! And when you bet, take your opportunities and back it up with hard cash. Never mix alcohol and betting and never bet until you have studied a race. Good luck everyone!

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? Hi everyone I'm going to introduce myself even though you will rarely see me post (for now anyway) My name is Craig and im 25 and live 10 minutes drive away from Pontefract. Im in a bit of a financial mess unfortunately due to gambling I got hooked on roulette losing money left right and centre (including loans) then getting behind on household bills. Thankfully I've sorted myself out mostly i still get the urge though! So i resort to playing with 1p chips on SKYBET to try and help ha. (I am getting there) I'm fascinated by this website! When i first joined all i did was read the football section, I'm just very interested in peoples opinions and what they are actually betting on. Then it dawned on me, people make money on horses. So i decided to read this section and well what can i say 'impressed' is not the word! So much knowledge! and i've seen many great tips too! (Noticed that certain people go for short odds and others tend to be over 10/1 most of the time? Why a trend and not a mixture? :S) I think the dedication by members is fantastic too seeing the same names everyday and the BBOTD results (BillyHIlls) update happens every night without fail, great stuff! I've read the horse racing section everyday for a month or so now. Even started reading this thread from page 1 but then noticed alot of names no longer post so i skipped to 8 (got to 4/5). I've followed a few tips and the first one was from robertob (it was a 20/1 and came in 2nd) so thank you! Even if it was low stakes. I know absolutely nothing about horse racing though, this is where the problem lies. All i do know is i want to! and i want to be good! The problem for me is where to start! I watch a race and learn nothing other than that bloody horse ran quick then! I've looked into older posts on here starting with reading about form and stuff, im willing to put the time and effort in (when i'm not working doing alot of hours to recover from my stupidity) I won't post very often due to the lack of knowledge but will continue to read everyday and learn. Keep up the good work everyone! Regards Craig

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? Hi all names Michael, 29, currently living in Tipperary Ireland. Background is in Exercise and Health so I do try to use that to help me in picks in general. Got into gambling when I was lucky or unlucky (haven't decided yet) enough to be working in an Irish pub in London where some of the punters were big into racing. Had some great days watching, betting, winning and loosing on some great horses while working there and the love of it never left me. I tend to bet on everything sinc e then but mainly on football and horses. In recent times I have started to be more strict with money management and put a real emphasis on actually turning a profit, I thought that might ruin it for me fun wise, but it done the opposite. I use a million different ways to pick horses if I'm honest and don't care if its and odds on shot or a 50/1 shot, if I feel it has a chance I;m happy with any profit. My main goal for this year is just to get more consistent with picks on horses as i tend to e all over the place. My main profit comes from football and NHL , the latter of which I know nothing about and am not a fan of even watching it, but using stats and some local news from papers etc in the states I have been quite consistent with it. Anyway, hopefully I can contribute something here.

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? Hi my names Peter I'm 47 years old live in East Lothian and have been quite successful at upsetting groups on fb with my hair brained plan to hit fifteen plus accumulators and I am hoping that isn't going to be the case here. I started on the horses at the beginning of the flat season so I lack the knowledge of courses, jockeys etc etc, I look at most races each night and with a view to in the future to start to forecast races I pick a few selections (to do with the last 3 runs and there speed rating) for each race depending on places. I'm sticking my neck out here but I plan to post my selections (my selections not tips I am asking the community to just watch them please) on the board for at least a week to see what the tipsters, punters think off our chances, some days are donkeys but on Tuesday 9/20 of my first choices placed 1st, 18/20 races had a place in them, and I had a fifteen fold which placed 6 I couldn't believe it, the Tuesday before I had 13/16, I feel that it's more of a lack of knowledge rather than too many selections, oh I have had a lot closer but with your help I hope we can get a lot lot closer, and think about retiring a lot lot sooner, cheers, aye yours, Eeyore.

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? Good Evening My name is Martyn and I am 33, based in the south of England. I’ve had an interest in Horse Racing and Football betting since the age of 18 but it’s only in the last 2 and a half years that I have had the time or access to resources to devote a serious amount of time to my betting. I’m aiming to post my own selections with reasoning in a thread in the Personal Thread for the purposes of tracking them. I’m hoping this will have 3 benefits:

  1. Cutting out the ‘bad bets’ so I only bet where I have a solid reasoning.
  2. Accurately track and record bets and outcomes in order to precisely identify whether my betting is profitable.
  3. Ensure I am focusing my betting in the areas where I am strongest.

I’m aiming to post selections the night before the racing, aside from Saturday and Sunday when I have more time. I’ll be starting with a 500 point bank and prices will be stated with each selection. To this effect, I’m not recommending people follow the selections although feel free if you’re inclined. First selections will be placed for the 1st January 2015. I am hoping to contribute to other sections of the forum, particularly the Nap of the Day competition. I’ve already learned a great deal from this site and will doubtlessly continue to, irrespective of how this experiment progresses. Best wishes,

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? My Name is Mark 48 from Chelmsford Essex Been into racing for the past 30 years ,got hooked when I attended the 1986 Cesarewitch and bagged the winner ,Orange Hill @ 20-1 I then fell In love with an up and coming legend,a grey horse going by the name of Desert Orchid. My user name is taken from the 1989 Ayr Gold cup winner, which I backed @ 50/1.(Joveworth) I tend to compile a list of horses each season and religiously follow them ,I have found this a profitable path to follow over the past few seasons I do have a Fav flat trainer who is Sir Mark Prescott and been lucky enough to meet him many years ago Small claim to fame,if you can call it that !, being bitten by the Group 2 winner Rock Hopper during a Michael Stoute stable visit. I love flat or NH racing one of the most memorable races I witnessed live was Zafonic's 1993 2000gns win- the turn of foot he showed off a fair pace was explosive! Been to 8 Cheltenham Gold Cups, the highlight being Desert Orchid's in '89,this year I decided to go to the Champion Hurdle the main reason to see Faugheen and wasn't disappointed .

Re: UK & Ireland Racing - Who are we? Hi, My name is Paul and I have been a follower of British horse racing now for more years than I wish to remember. I have vivid early memories of my old-man, most days with glasses perched on the end of his nose, never happier than when he was studying the form in the mirror and express newspapers (now there's a conundrum), as was the norm for the majority of working men in those days. He invariably lost his few bob each week, yet my dear old mum rarely laid into him, after all, it was his hobby and we never went short. I realise now, I wanted to be that happy contented man :) Some would argue that he was maybe not the best role model for his children, but as I said, I grew up knowing that in the scheme of things he was happy... I think, today's betting world would literally have blown his mind, as it did mine for a longer period of time than I wish to remember... Thank goodness, through the ups and downs, highs and lows of my betting forays to-date, I have now settled on my preferred methods of betting and slowly but surely I am clawing back the many £ks lost in the earlier years. I did worry that I had a problem at various stages of my love-affair with betting, but over time, through hard work and eventual discipline, I discovered that whilst I continue to still make bad or ill-disciplined decisions, I can now somehow manage to stand back from them and gradually recover the situation, plus eventually garner some returns. There are still many gremlins in my betting mind-set, but I intend to improve my skills further here and hopefully add to the knowledge base already present :) Paul
