Re: FA Cup > Saturday January 4th 2014 the only thing that seem profitable is backing both teams to score as cup matches throw far often many surprises. i'm staying away from outright winners who are difficult to spot when you take into consideration that many teams will rotate squads although strong home teams appeal to me a lot. there is still time to think about this

Re: FA Cup > Saturday January 4th 2014 Just looking at last year's 3rd round games for any pointers to how this round might go - http://www.oddsportal.com/soccer/england/fa-cup-2012-2013/results/ Last year, several Championship clubs did well against Premier League teams - Brighton beat Newcastle Bournemouth drew at Wigan (the eventual winners) Blackpool drew at Fulham (Wigan and Fulham won the replays) Bolton drew with Sunderland and won the replay Against this, Villa beat Ipswich, Man City beat Watford, Norwich won at Peterboro Other underdog winners were: Luton beat Wolves Macclesfield beat Cardiff Oldham won at Nottingham Forest Overall, there were quite a few underdog winners in last year's 3rd round, although there were 32 games so of course the majority were won by the favourites :)

Re: FA Cup > Saturday January 4th 2014 I've had a look down and think these teams might be some value at current odds. This is largely based on recent shots on target stats which can be a guide to true form. At this stage, these aren't tips, but ideas ... Saturday A Villa v Sheff Utd Sheff Utd @ 9.0 Brighton v Reading Brighton @ 2.2 Doncaster v Stevenage Stevenage @ 4.9 Everton v QPR QPR @ 10.0 Wigan v MK Dons MK Dons @ 5.0 Yeovil v Leyton Orient Orient @ 3.1 Sunday Nottingham Forest v West Ham Forest @ 2.5 Sunderland v Carlisle Carlisle @ 11.0

I agree wholeheartedly about Forest and I'd expect their price to go down considerably. I assume Kevin Nolan won't be available now. Him and Andy Carroll being out is not good news for them, or should I say, Carroll's continued absence. Elsewhere I fancy Southend to knock out Millwall who have their own troubles.... Southend going well in League Two and will be very very tough to beat on their own patch. Grimsby should give Huddersfield a run for their money, currently going well in the Conference and are scoring well at home with a strong home record. Huddersfield will find it tough. Orient away at Yeovil too.... Yeovil are probably no better than Orient player wise and won't find it in any way daunting traveling to Yeovil.

Re: FA Cup > Saturday January 4th 2014

I guess this article is a sign of how threatened Premiership clubs feel about the FA Cup ... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25579811
Blimey, I might have a cheeky punt on Sheffield Utd on the handicap after reading that. Lambert clearly has no interest in the cup and he would probably prefer to get knocked out.

Yet last year they beat Ipswich in the very same round and they also were involved in the relegation dogfight in the PL unless Lambert changed his priorities? So maybe some sort of handicap on Sheffield?

Depends who Villa play doesn't it? I think most times managers like to play mind games and trying to read between the lines here he was basically saying what everyone knows anyway :lol the EPL means more financially etc etc If Vlaar, Benteke or Agbhonlahor aren't starting then that for me would make Sheffield United a good bet. All three rested or on the bench is a bonus.

Re: FA Cup > Saturday January 4th 2014 It's not that straightforward I suppose. For under pressure managers like Lambert and Allardyce, a good win in the cup might keep the fans and owners happy but I think (as Lambert says) most top-flight managers aren't really interested in the FA Cup because the Premier League is so important to a club's future. There have been quite a few cases over the years of clubs in trouble (and eventually being relegated) while having good cup runs. I remember it happened to my club, Crystal Palace, in the 1990s. And of course it happened to Wigan last year. So a lot of PL managers are probably quite happy to get knocked out.

Re: FA Cup > January 4th & 5th I think it's a good idea to back PL teams that aren't threatened with relegation and at the same time without chances to finish in the top four. Such teams are Southampton and Newcastle. I think that both teams will want to have a good cup run, they aren't invovled in the Capital One Cup and European competitions. Southampton will host Burnley, who are having a great season and will target propotion to the top flight. However, the gulf in class at the moment between any Championship team and Southampton is too big and I think that the Saints will have no problems winning. The home side is priced at 1.55, which represents plenty of value. Also the Saints are on the back of consecutive PL defeats and one win in nine and will be desperate to come back to winning ways. My bets for this game are Saints to win 1.55, Saints HT/FT 2.25 and Saints -1.5 2.42 Bet365. Newcastle are also on the back on consecutive PL defeats. While this will be Ole's first game in charge and the team will be fired up, tiredness could be an issue after very few rotations during the Christmas period. Also I don't think Cardiff will want to get invloved in a cup run with a tough relegation battle ahead. Newcastle to win 1.7 and Newcastle HT/FT 2.50 Bet365.

Re: FA Cup > January 4th & 5th I think Spurs are a woeful price at 3/1 to win at the Emirates, they beat United away last time out granted and this is the cup & a big derby, but I feel they should be around the 4/1 - 9/2 mark to win here. Arsenal are having a great season, they are top of the league, going well in the Champions League and got a gutsy win at home to Cardiff when the chips were down the other day. They have shown a few battling qualities this season that they have not showed for many years where they have picked up results where maybe they did not deserve to do so. Spurs are playing very well under Sherwood, Adebayor is revitalised but I worry big time for Danny Rose tomorrow who is a poor defender in my own personal opinion and if he has to try keep tabs on Walcott he is in for a tough afternoon. (Granted both of them start) I had Arsenal as 4/6 shots according to my own tissue so I feel the 21/20 available is cracking value. I also think the Over 2.5 is hugely likely and I had priced it up as an 8/15 chance as when these two teams meet more times than not there is a goal fest. In recent years there has been a 4-4, 5-2 and 5-2 so in a cup game it could be worth having a stab at the goals market and correct scores at huge prices for small stakes. Arsenal to WIN - 10 Points @ 21/20 Bet365 Over 2.5 Goals - 10 Points @ 8/11 Stan James Over 6.5 Goals - 1 Point @ 20/1 Bet365 Arsenal to Win 5-2 - 0.5 Points @ 179/1 Betway Arsenal to Win 4-3 - 0.5 Points @ 139/1 Betway

Leeds are a class above (actually two leagues) and are having a good season in the championship, however they have slowed down in recent weeks with no win in their last 4 league games. Rochdale are in OK form and are doing well in league two this season. They have a solid record at home this season too with 9 wins a draw and only 3 losses out of 13 home games. I feel this is a hard game to call TBH as it's hard to call what team Leeds will field (striker Ross McCormack is likely to miss the game with a hamstring injury) and whether they will be more focused on promotion, although they do have a weeks rest after this game to recover. I actually think Rochdale (DNB) @ 7/4 with Bet365 could represent some good value.

Re: FA Cup > January 4th & 5th I quite like the look of Wigan at home to MK Dons here. MK Dons have actually had some decent results away from home in recent league games beating Wolves and Crawley but generally aren't at their best on the road and lost away to League One high flyers Brentford in their last away match. Wigan are now picking up good results under their new manager and starting to play a better brand of football. They are unbeaten in their last 5 matches including wins against Reading, Bolton and also they were the team to put an end to Derby's 9 game unbeaten run on new years day. I think Wigan will have too much class for MK Dons here and should look to carry on their run of good form, they are of course the current FA Cup holders ;) Wigan to win - 4/5 with Bet365.

Possibly no Giroud or Ozil, Ramsey and Bendtner out and the fact Arsenal are obsessed with the league, v a side that just won at OT? Sherwood still an unknown quantity, but I'd side with Spurs if I had to. Forest must be a play. Already taken them DNB @ 1.50. http://www.whufc.com/articles/20140103/big-sam-on-nottingham-forest_2236884_3602150

I wouldn't get carried away with Spurs' win at Old Trafford. Newcastle, Everton & West Brom also won there. Walcott will possibly play further up the pitch and they have no shortage of midfielders, Rosicky, Wilshere, Cazorla, Arteta, Flamini.. Spurs got knocked out early last year when they lost to Leeds so not sure if it will be their first priority either the cup.

Re: FA Cup > January 4th & 5th 4pts Blackburn vs Man City - Over 3.5 goals 5/4 William Hill City are going to make changes for this match but I still think they’ll have enough to win the game but Blackburn have it in them to make this a tough afternoon for the beaten finalists of last season. One thing Rovers have in their side is goals and City score for fun too so I’m expecting plenty of goals in this match. This should be a good, open cup tie and it is worth chancing there being more than 3.5 goals in it. Re: FA Cup > January 4th & 5th Callum Wilson is out for 4-6 weeks and Dagnall has returned to Barnsely (cant play though). So Cov will just have Leon Clarke up front. As bad as they are, Im inclined to play Barnsley DNB. Jordan Clarke (21 apps) and Fleck (23 apps) face late fitness tests, and defender Seaborne (5 apps), and midfielder Conor Thomas (23 apps) are definitely out for Cov. Im just waiting to see if Brek Shea gets clearance from Stoke to play for Barnsley. Barnsley Manager Danny Wilson's comments.... Wilson stressed that the FA Cup is not a time to experiment. “We’ll be fielding the strongest side we can because the Cup is important. “It’s important for the income, but it’s important to get a win in front of our fans. That will give us a bit of confidence to take into the league programme. “We’ve had an intense period which has been difficult, but Coventry will be a good challenge for us. We need a bit of a spark because it’s been difficult because we’re not winning games.”

I wouldn't either but I can't see Sherwood setting the team up with any hint of fear. I'm sure they'll really give it a go as he has nothing to lose. No reputation, contracts mean bugger all too when chairmen can rip them up with a sniff of a loss. Arsenal without Ozil just won't be the same so that would be key to me.

Considering how many 0-0's and 1-0's Ewood has seen this season this seems a brave pick to me, but good luck anyway.

Re: FA Cup > January 4th & 5th West Bromwich Albion v Crystal Palace (15:00 GMT) I can see West Brom playing a decent side, Crystal Palace have their own injury concerns. I feel 1.8 is value even with Billy jones out. More importantly Crystal Palace have the following out .Jack Hunt, Glenn Murray, Jerome Thomas, Paddy McCarthy and Adlene Guedioura all remain sidelined. Guedioura being an important miss.
