  • 3 weeks later...

I won't be around at game time but it's worth noting what Cardiff players are available and in what condition. We play Northampton in the cup midweek and a large proportion of our first team and squad will have been away on the all important, well timed international friendly fiasco ffs.

Re: England > Championship > Weekend 17-18 August Even from this long range it looks like a real stinker of a coupon to open the championship with. Possible value on Middlesbrough and Peterborough (given Leicester's defensive issues going into the new campaign). Let's see how things develop over the next week and a half but it's looking like reconnaissance should be the only objective for this first round of fixtures.

Re: England > Championship > Weekend 17-18 August Very tough week, most of the games look like a draw to me. My lot Palace, maybe another dull season league wise players moving on with not much coming in. Talk of prem loan signings mainly youngsters from what I have read.We struggled in front of goal last season but were quite tight at the back and cant see this changing at the moment. So a possible 1-1 draw on the cards

Re: England > Championship > Weekend 17-18 August I like Charlton (+0.5) 2.04 in the opening round. They were really impressive in last season in League One, having lost only 10% of their games. Of course they played against much weaker teams than Birmingham that obviously is very solid team. I know from experience that bookmakers tend to overprice this kind of favorites in english lower leagues, especially in opening rounds. B'gham had many home draws last season and honestly I feel Charlton is too weak to win this game here but there is big chance for some low scoring draw, therefore I like the value of asian +0.5 handicap here.

Re: England > Championship > Weekend 17-18 August Leeds +0 (AH) v. Wolves @ 1.75 Bet365 (4 Points) Im getting in earlyish on this one as the price on Leeds is already coming in. I like this bet on both fronts in that I was looking to back Leeds and fancied taking on Wolves and as it transpires they are playing each other. Leeds have lost some useful players and Snodgrass in particular is a blow. But Warnick has also done some decent business with the majority of the signings starting in their 4-0 league cup win over Shrewsbury. I know Rudolph Austin quite well as Stoke were after him a couple of years ago but couldn't get a work permit. He's done very well in Scandanavia by all accounts and I think he could do very well in the championship as he has got all of the physical attributes with a bit of ability to match. He started alongside David Norris in their last match and they could go on to form a very good partnership. Luke Varney should add some attacking threat and go towards compesating the loss of Snodgrass. With Mcormack and Becchio up front they also have some decent fire power and should be a handful. Wolves should be alright long term wise this season but at the moment there are plenty of negatives against them. Kightly has gone and Fletcher and Jarvis have put in transfer requests. They haven't left as yet but their heads can't be in the right place. Berra and Milijas have also been told to find new clubs. On top of this they have a number of injuries with O'Hara still struggling and some of their new foreign signings not fully fit. There is also talk that the players are struggling with the new managers tactics who is trying to adopt a more technical approach than what they were used to under mcarthy and Connor last season. It may work as the season goes on but it could take time for the players to adapt to. I just get the feeling that Leeds are catching Wolves at a good time here and I think Warnock could have his side a lot more drilled and ready. I know you can't read much into the first round of the cup but Leeds' result was the much more encouraging of the two. Away at Elland rd is a tough 1st fixture for Wolves' return to the championship and they will do well to get something from this match. They do still have some good players and considering they would probably be happy with the point, I am slightly wary of the draw. That said, I can't see Leeds losing this one and as such I will be taking them on the draw no bet +0 handicap.

Re: England > Championship > Weekend 17-18 August Friday night preview: 4pts Cardiff vs Huddersfield - Over 2.5 goals Evs 188Bet I expect Cardiff to be better in the attacking third of the pitch this season which could ultimate be the difference in them going up or suffering another playoff heartache. Huddersfield have absolutely no problem in the attacking areas of the field so I see this being a bit of an open game and one which should have a few goals in it. Re: England > Championship > Weekend 17-18 August 4pts Leeds to beat Wolves 7/5 Blue Square Leeds were inconsistent under Neil Warnock last season but having put his own squad together over the summer Warnock has no excuses now and I think his side will deliver in this match. They have good options going forward and look a lot stronger in defence, particularly down the flanks, and I expect Warnock to make Elland Road a bit of a fortress this season. Re: England > Championship > Weekend 17-18 August Leicester-Peterborough: This match should have some goals inside. Leicester has a strong offense with the likes of Nugent, Beckford, Gallagher, Vardy, Futacs and some others. Midfield is ok, but their defense is the problem: Whitbread, St.Ledger and Moore are all out through injuries while Parkes is still serving a suspension for a red card at his former club Bristol Rovers. Peterborough is an overish side, with a solid offense, but a less solid defense. In my opinion, there will be at least 3 goals.

Re: England > Championship > Weekend 17-18 August I think Birmingham are worth taking should they not drop below 1.8, they were notoriously good at home last season having the longest undefeated record at home in the league. They defeated Barnet 5-1 at St Andrews midweek in the Capital One Cup. The Blues have not really weakened only losing Jordan Mutch to Cardiff and if anything they have strengthened with the likes of Peter Lovenkrands, Ravel Morrison, Darren Ambrose and Hayden Mullins coming in. As for the Addicks, 3 players have only been signed and it is unsure wether Chris Powell can cut the mustard at this level of management and if his players can do so also. They did not get the best start to the season either with Leyton Orient turning them over on Penalties (1-1 Regular Time) midweek in the Cup. This season I can see Charlton not picking up many away points and will rely on home form. A trip to St Andrews tommorow will be a daunting task to start the league with.

Re: England > Championship > Weekend 17-18 August Cardiff vs Huddersfield - Draw @ 31/11 Pinnacle Only a small play considering its the first game of the season but i feel that last seasons draw specialists Cardiff may not have an easy time of it tonight. Huddersfield proved throughout the whole of last season they are very hard to beat, and despite the slightly surprising sacking of Lee Clark in the 2nd half of the year they battled on well to gain promotion. Cardiff will want to get the season off to the best start possible as they must be looking at finally nailing one of the automatic promotion spots but after a disappointing result in the cup at Northampton on Tuesday and the fact a few of the players are coming back from injury/international duty, they may find it hard to hit the ground running. Draw looks the value call here

Re: England > Championship > Weekend 17-18 August Will take one in tonight's match: Cardiff vs Huddersfield 3/10pts Cardiff to draw with Huddersfield - 11/4 with William Hill Cardiff seem to be getting a bit shorter by the hour and, although I understand why they are favourites, I can't understand why the price has been pushed to as low as 8/11 in places. Yes, they should be up around the top 6 again come May but this is the first game of the season and the Bluebirds weren't immune to the odd dodgy home result last term. Huddersfield will be coming in to this campaign with a lot of momentum and have a manager who knows what it takes to get results in this division. They obivously have a huge goal threat in Jordan Rhodes on their side and have made some good signings over the summer in the likes of Clayton, Gerrard, Southern etc. They have proved that they are a team who won't roll over and I think they could sneak a result in Cardiff tonight by stifling a strong home attack. To me, this 11/4 is terrific value.

Re: England > Championship > Weekend 17-18 August Going to take one for tomorrow, too. Very tough card in my view. Barnsley vs Middlesbrough 5/10pts Middlesbrough to beat Barnsley - 7/5 with William Hill If this was a couple of games in to the season I would be on this selection with a bigger stake but this is as big as I am prepared to go at the moment. I have taken the Boro to win this league this year as I think we have a solid enough squad to be able to challenge at the top. Last season we were fantastic away from home and if the form at the Riverside was anywhere near the form shown on our travels, we would have been challenging around the top 2 for longer than we were. Our game is suited to being an away side as we are good at picking sides off on the counter-attack. In Woodgate and Williams we have enough at the back whilst the likes of Leadbitter in midfield are suited to away days like this. There is enough pace from people like Carayol, Reach, Ledesma and Emnes to cause problems on the break. Barnsley will be in or around the bottom 3 come May in my view and they will be under pressure to get off to a good start here. They have problems in the goalkeeping department and lack a true goalscorer up top. I think they'll rely on hard work once again but believe that Mowbray's style of play will be too much for them to deal with this weekend. So, a good stake on Boro repeating some of last season's good away form to kick off this campaign.

Re: England > Championship > Weekend 17-18 August Burnley V Bolton: over 2.5 Goals @ 1.90 WillHill I fancy the chances of goals in this game today. Bolton have apparently kept just 1 clean sheet in their last 45 away games! They have of course dropped down a league but Burnley have good striking options and Charlie Austin is a real handful. Bolton have managed to keep hold of many players and they should be a real attacking threat in the championship. Kevin Davies is getting on but he is such a clever player and he's got the know how to get under the skin of opposing defenders. Both sides look good in attacking areas but neither of them are completely solid at the back. Eddie Howe and Owen Coyle both like their sides to try and play a bit of football and that bodes well for the overs today.
