    good to see you back.

This is just something I have been trying (well 1 of 2). I can post in here but haven't been posting much as can't guarantee continuity as some days are difficult. The Mrs has been in hosptal and it stopped me from being able to focus fully on finding selections so stopped . It wouldn't be right to have people following if some days I went missing.

    REVIEW OF THE YEAR

I think that the accumulated loss for the year was largely down to two factors.  Firstly, when I increased my betting bank I seem to be too free with my bets on longer priced selections and backed too many of them as well.  Not enough of them won so my losses accumulated.  The other factor was the Festival Bets.  I was tending to have a bet in all the races at the festival meetings.  I described these as fun bets. Of course, too many of them lost.

You seem to have reached some conclusions and turned your betting around, hope it continues. We all like big priced winners but very few can be found without inside information IMO. My biggest price winner of 2021 was 40/1 which I had a good EW  bet on, it won and made my week.

I did some time back do a review of S.P.'s of the winners etc, which seemed to show 75 - 80 % of winners coming at 6/1 or less. For this reason I started to concentrate on 2/1 - 6/1 in the betting (for most if not all). Good luck in 2022.

    thanks for reply bangon.

i agree , i dont follow tipsters either.

i was just wondering if anyone has studies ( or even has just a feeling ) if there are any tipsters that would move the markets. ( excluding that of rpost and hugh taylor )

i suppose my question is also asking: are there any popular private ( paid for ) tipsters, that actually do well long term.

i cant see it personally becuase of the obvious question. if they were that good at tipping why would they need to sell the service !!

any thoughts on this either ????

I have used tipsters a long time ago, but soon stopped. Some of the claims are very amusing. I know of 1 who used to advise EW bets all the time, on a cover to win basis. One particular losing run would have meant putting 1300pts EW on a 10/11 chance ! Most definitely the way to the poor house.

I also a very long time ago used to work with a tipster (about 25 years ago), he was good but only gave around 1 bet per week and his subscribers wanted more, I provided another selection each week and he started doing 'B' bets. Not heard of him for some time but he was good and perhaps decided he didn't want the hassle any more. I know he was building his betting bank at the time.

Some tipsters might run a service because they are restricted. I know that if you bet greyhounds, a run of 4 or 5 winners will see you struggle to keep the account open at times. It's not as easy as people think, beating the bookies and keeping accounts active.

Hi i was wondering if anyone know of tipsters that would have a effect on the markets.

the obvious is pricewise or any RPOST members club AND racing tv + ATR tipsters.

but are there any others that would influence the market. ???

for instance i know steve jones, of CD systems i think its called, his selections seem to be well backed. anyone know of others like that ??

(not looking to just follow steamed tipsters by the way, actually the opposite if anything)

i know there used to be like big names and followed people ( findley, barney etc ), but these seem to have been replaced by a thousand twitter twat tipsters.
are there any popular tipsters still ??

No doubt there are some tipsters who will be followed and have an effect on the market, not sure who though as I don't follow any.

As for Harry Findlay, he is still around but tends to focus on sports rather than horse racing, and his bets would be on Betfair rather than with traditional bookmakers.

  5. Can we gain an edge ? Of course.

Bookmakers have to price up hundreds of matches, we only have to find the ones they get wrong. This is unlikely to be the English Premier League as they do most of their work on it as it is the most popular. However, lower leagues are a different story ( I know a few odds compilers).

Always remember, WE DON'T HAVE TO BET until we find one that we like. personally, I would look at lower leagues, and a minimum price .

  6. Just a 4 runner field in the 2.37 at Newcastle. Not really my thing ... 4 runners ... Conditional Jockeys .... Veterans ...

    However

    2.37 Newc - Ramonex - 11/4 (bet365 B.O.G) is of interest. ... lost 2nd 10/3

Trainer Richard Hobson has had 1 winner from 3 runners in the last 2 weeks,... he has travelled with just the 1 horse on a 510 mile round trip, ...he has a 31% strike rate at the course, ...and it has been backed.

I do increase stakes slightly after a few losers. I am not suggesting chasing losses, but a professional once told me that you should be firing on all cylinders when a winner comes along, not reducing stakes and licking your wounds.

Yesterday was a good example of slightly increasing stakes, 4 losers on the previous day (1pt x 4 = -4pts), and a winner with the next selection at 3/1, with slightly increased stakes recovering the losses before reverting to 1pt again. ( It needs to be gradual and not cover to win).

    1 selection today

    2.35 Fos Las - To be Sure - 11/4 ... lost 2nd

    Excellent tipping Mr Bang On.

I've been following your thread and I think you've been a little bit unlucky on occasions.

On a nice little run at the moment.

    Thanks,

you get good and bad runs regularly, hopefully I'm in front long term. Although I don't allocate variable stakes - I do increase stakes slightly after a few losers. I am not suggesting chasing losses, but a professional once told me that you should be firing on all cylinders when a winner comes along, not reducing stakes and licking your wounds.

Obviously you need to work from a decent betting bank, although I tend to paper trade ideas, and then drop anything that doesn't provide fairly regular winners.

    taking remaining pot and running

had enough of continously getting beat on the line.

    take care all

Backing odds on is EXTREMELY difficult to make a profit, you have to be very careful as a couple of losers will wipe out hard earned profits. Keep thinking positive, and record as much detail as possible to see where you do best. The first step is to break even and stop losing... believe me.. it feels like winning, we've all been there.

As for odds on, I would recommend to anyone to record ALL of the odds on runners and see how they do each month... it might change your thought process.

    2 horse race at Cheltenham.

I was writing this just as My Drogo Fell which was going to be my point,

Shocking that trainers wont or cant get a horse ready for a premier race on the TV at the premier track.

Owners and trainers moan about prize money levels but wont participate in a race worth £13,000 to the winner and there would still be only 2 runners if it was 20K in my opinion.

This is not good for racing on any level, its not rocket science to point out that the worse chaser in the country could/would have won this race if it stayed on it's feet. I can not see any valid excuse for the lack of runners.

I heard the reason was that 'If you run well against a highly rated horse - you would be raised in the handicap despite not winning'.
