UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round 2nd leg > 10th - 11th July

Liepajas Metalurgs vs Prestatyn I think there is some value in this game. The first game ended 1-2 to Liepajas so they should qualify with no problem, everything is in their favour, though this is Prestatyn's biggest game of their season so they will certainly fight. Whilst stats suggest the first game was quite even, Liepajas had a man sent off and Prestatyn's late onslaught of corners and pressure made it look more even than it was according to reports from Prestatyn fans, who were impressed by the visitors. Baltic sides are traditionally strong at home in these early qualifying rounds, and a look at Liepajas' recent home results in Europe is very impressive for a side of their pedigree: Liepajas 2-2 Legia Warsaw Liepajas 4-0 La Fiorita Liepajas 1-4 Salzburg Liepajas 2-1 Dinamo Tblisi Liepajas 0-2 Vaslui Liepajas 2-0 Glentoran Liepajas 3-2 AIK Liepjas 1-1 Dinamo Brest Bar La Fiorita, all these sides are better than Prestatyn. I think everything is in the home side's favour here. They are experienced in Europe, full-time and are mid-season. This is Prestatyn's first European away game, they are part-time and pre-season. Liepajas won the away game with ten men, and Prestatyn need to come out and attack as they need to score at least twice to qualify. Prestatyn's defence was abysmal last season and I don't believe they've signed anyone in that department other than a goalie (I think the goalie wasn't the problem). They are good going forward and they have a never-say-die attitude so I have no doubt they will attack in this game. I see a high scoring game which Liepajas will eventually win by a fair margin, and I have taken the following bets which I think are good value: Over 3 goals (AH) @ 1.96 (SBObet) Liepajas -1 (AH) @ 1.75 (Bet365) I also got a small sum matched for the latter bet at Betfair for 1.85; Marathon actually have it at 1.94 if you can get on with them.

Re: UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round 2nd leg > 10th - 11th July Botev Plovidiv looks interesting and maybe some value for Plovdiv win. The game is being played in Burgas not at Plovidiv home ground which looks a bit of a dump but I dont think this will have much effect. Plovdiv won the first leg 1-0 and look to have made some decent signings over the summer. They look quite strong with fringe bulgarian internationals on the bench. Bulgarian football seems to have had a mini resurgence of late and their league seems quite strong and the clubs at the top end look to have a fair bit of money to spend. Astana are missing 2 of their best players a defender and striker both kazak internationals and they have struggled without them not winning in 5 games since they got injured. Fedar I think is Bulgarian so will have better knowledge than me. What do you think of Botev Plovdiv Fedar?

Re: UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round 2nd leg > 10th - 11th July Trans Narva are clearly no great shakes. They finished 4th in Estonian last year to qualify and are light on goals. The squads strikers have not too any goals on their CV's. Gefle qualified via the "Fair Play" route. The first match with Gefle was fairly even, Gefle had the better of the first half and Narva came into the game later on. Gefle's goals came from just 5 attempts on target, the first was an own goal and the last was a mistake from a defender in the 93rd minute. One interesting fact is the game is being played in Sundsvall about 200km North of Gavle. A neutral venue. Even more interesting in that Gefle have ZERO league wins in their last 12 matches. Its likely they will only have a couple of hundred fans at the game and that could be a leveller. Fitness should not be an issue as both teams are well into their seasons. In summary: With Gefle leading 3-0 they could ease off and be vunerable. This could turn out to be a cracking 33/1 shot!

Mate, I am surprised you did a very good analysis about Botev, despite language barrier. :clap You are totally right - they are strong, they are rich (for local standards), and they keep on reinforcing themselves with good players. Neutral venue shouldn't be a problem - the stadium will be sold out and full of Botev fans, so it won't make any difference. I read that Botev were better in the first game and had the better chances, although their domination wasn't overwhelming. My only worry here is that Kazakhstan teams are notorious for being very defensive, and Botev don't like when they have to deal with this kind of opponents - they prefer more open game. Also, having won the first leg, they might not be completely unhappy with a draw....Nevertheless, the current price is 1.9, which when adding the bookie over-round, should imply about 50% probability of home win. I think Botev's chances should be around 70%, so there is value definitely! Hope I was helpful.

Re: UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round 2nd leg > 10th - 11th July Got a few bets on tonight, moving house currently so not had as much time as usual! AC Libertas v Sarajevo Got burnt quite badly on this game last week with Sarajevo only getting a 1-0 win, but I'm willing to risk even more this week as I strongly believe there is very little chance Libertas will enjoy as much luck (and that's all I think it was) as they did in the first leg. I didn't really feel the first leg result was down to any complacency on Sarajevo's part, from what I could watch they played well and attacked for the full 90 minutes registering 30 odd shots on target and hitting the woodwork 4 times, they had pace and good movement in attacking areas and I'm willing to say it was only pure luck that prevented a higher scoreline. The coach has said he will play a strong side today, they rested a few last week as he was expecting a more comfortable victory but his hand has been forced in this game due to the first leg result and they will play an attacking game tonight to give the scoreline a respectable look. Thought the San Marino side looked pretty clueless all over the park which may sound dismissive, but I believe if Sarajevo approach this game in the right manner they will win by at least 3 goals. Sarajevo HT/FT - 1.49 - betfair - 10 Points Sarajevo -2.0AH - 1.55 - betinternet - 10 Points Sarajevo -2.5AH - 2.02 - betinternet - 5 Points Malmo v Drogheda First leg finished 0-0, Drogheda finished with 10 men but produced a decent battling performance against the side joint top in the Allsvenskan, seems like it was a game of few chances with Malmo slightly shading it. Drogheda are struggling in the league, the coach has had to change their approach in matches after they shipped tons of goals earlier in the season, it seems to have worked as they now haven't conceded a goal in the last 3 games but as such they haven't been scoring as many either scoring in only 1 game out of the last 6. Malmo are obviously favourites to go through on their own patch, the coach has said he expects Drogheda to line up 4-1-4-1 as in the first match and rely on counter attacks and set pieces as their main attacking threat. I think Malmo will comfortably go through as they have been a pretty strong home side this season only losing once there in the league so far. Drogheda will likely huff and puff but probably fall just short, have a hunch the score will finish 2-0 so had a play on that also. Malmo to win to nil - 1.66 - bet365 - 5 Points Malmo 2-0 - 6.0 - bet365 - 1 Point Liepajas Metalurgs vs Prestatyn Taken a punt on this based on pg_yid's write-up above, won't really add much as he has done a good job above but Welsh sides away in Europe are generally poor and with the full time v part time added to the equation and Metalurgs experience in Europe a home win looks likely. I didn't get on the -1.0AH as the price had sunk to about 1.6, took the 1.53 from coral for the straight win which was a bit higher than everyone else, now 1.44. Liepajas Metalurgs - 1.53 - coral - 10 Points

Re: UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round 2nd leg > 10th - 11th July Malmö FF -v- Drogheda United Malmö face Drogheda United tonight in the second league of this Europa League qualifier. This is a game which Malmö are fully expected to win, and there really is no other realistic outcome when you weigh up both teams. The reality is that in the first leg Malmö were the better team, and weren't able to score due to some poor decision making, but also because of some good defending by Drogheda. Drogheda did also have some chances to score as well last week, and arguably should have been awarded a penalty. Looking at this home fixture for Malmö, it is worth noting that the Malmö manager has been put under significant pressure ahead of this game. He was given an angry reception from Malmö fans in Dublin last Thursday after the game, and because Malmö will be expected to win this tie comfortably, there is no doubt pressure on them to deliver tonight. For Drogheda, there is absolutely no pressure at all, and for the club to be in a position where the tie is still alive after the first leg is a big bonus. The suspension of Ryan Brennan is quite annoying for Drogheda. He's actually a midfielder by the way. He and his older brother (Gavin) often play in midfield together. I think Drogheda can replace the suspended Ryan Brennan adequately enough, and therefore it shouldn't effect their game plans too much. It's quite hard to anticipate how Drogheda will begin this game. I would expect that they'll be trying to 'weather the storm' from the beginning of the game. Mick Cooke (the Drogheda manager) knows that Malmö will be looking to score as soon as possible this evening, and therefore he will have Drogheda set up to defend. Drogheda have kept a clean sheet in their last three games, and therefore I suppose he can feel confident his defence can do a good job again tonight, but I doubt it. I think the better quality of the Malmö players will show tonight. That said, I don't think Malmö can beat the -2AH line. Malmö haven't won a single league game by more than 2 goals this season in the Swedish League and crucially have been conceding a goal in most of their games. In my opinion Drogheda are no worse than the lower teams in the Swedish league. Because there's so much pressure on Malmö tonight (which obviously should be relieved once they do score a goal) I think they won't be able to play so fluidly. The -2AH line could depend upon how quickly Malmö score. Drogheda's gameplan will have to change if they go a goal down. I do expect Drogheda will be looking to score on the counter attack throughout the game, but if they do go a goal down, then they'll likely switch to more of an attacking approach... and anything can happen after that! So they are my feelings. I'm tipping both teams to score in this game. Malmö will score, and once they do score, Drogheda will certainly have to try to score too. Drogheda can definitely score because they have plenty of goal scoring threats in their team. My pick: Both Teams to Score: Yes Available @ 2.20 odds with Bet365 (0.5 units)

Irtysh were ultra defensive and showed no attacking intent, whilst Levski had lots of posession but created only a handful of good chances. Levski also missed a penalty near the end and probably should have won 1-0 or 2-0 on balance. Irtysh are just 6th in the Kazakstan league (just 12 teams in the league) and are already 18pts behind leaders Aktobe (who also play tonight) after just 18 rounds of fixtures. Levski finished 2nd in much stronger Bulgarian league last term, just 1pt behind champions Ludogorets. The evidence from the first leg and the teamsheets shows that Levski are a couple of levels above Irtysh class-wise. With Irtysh likely to come out of their defensive shell this afternoon, and show more attacking ambition, I expect Levski to find holes in the Irtysh rearguard on the break. I would expect a 1-0 or 2-0 Levski win.

Dang, sorry for seeing this so late...I could have saved you some money. There is a reason levski are known as the Euroidiots when it comes to European games. The truth is that right now only Botev looks solid enough to do somewhat well in Europe. Even Ludogorets look weak right now and I expect them to fail against Slovan next week in the CL. Sorry for the off-topic, but just be careful with Bulgarian teams, our league is a joke right now and there is no point of backing any teams...especially at 1.60ish...once again I wish I'd seen this post earlier.

Re: UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round 2nd leg > 10th - 11th July Some crazy prices in the Libertas vs Sarajevo game. Betvictor up to 1.25 for the straight Sarajevo win, whilst -1.5AH is as high as 1.71 with Marathon but as low as 1.3 in other places. The -2AH can be found for 2.14 with Betvictor but is 1.65 with Ladbrokes. Very weird odds.

Re: UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round 2nd leg > 10th - 11th July the one wager i took was on the Latvian side vs Prestatyn. Wasn't watching but I'm assuming once they went down to 10men the welshmen were able to capitalize and not only get a result, but force ET, penalties, and actually advanced. Cheers to those lads, judging from some tweets i saw, they've really made Wales and Wales football proud. Were Prestatyn advancing this round's biggest shock?

It was definitely up there - for Prestatyn to come back from 1-0 down with 15 minutes to go to win the match in 90 minutes, see through extra time in spite of the full-time/part-time disadvantage and the fact that Liepajas are well into their season with match fitness on their side, and hold their nerve to win it on penalties was a terrific effort. There has been no shortage of shocks today - as well as Prestatyn's comeback, there was Vikingur winning away at Inter Turku and qualifying for the next round and ten-man Santa Coloma drawing with Breidablik, who thrashed them last week. Elsewhere, Valletta and Zrinjski Mostar scraped the narrowest of wins against Sammarinese and Andorran opposition at home. An intriguing day of Europa League action - just hope people weren't too badly burnt on some of the more surprising results.

Re: UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round 2nd leg > 10th - 11th July Apologies for my very poor Narva tip albeit a 33/1 shot. They got mullered. I was concerned when i saw quite a bit pre-match for over 3.5 and "any unquoted" at 2.2 in the correct score market. I know the strength of Swedish teams having lived there for 3 years. Seems there is not a single winning tip on this thread.

Re: UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round 2nd leg > 10th - 11th July

Got a few bets on tonight, moving house currently so not had as much time as usual! Sarajevo HT/FT - 1.49 - betfair - 10 Points WIN Sarajevo -2.0AH - 1.55 - betinternet - 10 Points LOST Sarajevo -2.5AH - 2.02 - betinternet - 5 Points LOST Malmo v Drogheda First leg finished 0-0, Drogheda finished with 10 men but produced a decent battling performance against the side joint top in the Allsvenskan, seems like it was a game of few chances with Malmo slightly shading it. Malmo to win to nil - 1.66 - bet365 - 5 Points WIN Malmo 2-0 - 6.0 - bet365 - 1 Point WIN Liepajas Metalurgs vs Prestatyn Taken a punt on this based on pg_yid's write-up above, won't really add much as he has done a good job above but Welsh sides away in Europe are generally poor and with the full time v part time added to the equation and Metalurgs experience in Europe a home win looks likely. I didn't get on the -1.0AH as the price had sunk to about 1.6, took the 1.53 from coral for the straight win which was a bit higher than everyone else, now 1.44. Liepajas Metalurgs - 1.53 - coral - 10 Points LOST
Sarajevo have killed me again, I had more on them than I put here and I can't believe they only won by a single goal - as pg_yid says the odds movements looked very strange before the start of the game :sad The Malmo result and correct scoreline was good, Metalurgs were going well until the sending off blah blah blah :@ Hard luck stories once again, I seem close to cracking it but just can't get there, hopefully the introduction of some better quality sides in the next rounds will inject more...err..professionalism into the games. Not that I'm suggesting otherwise of course.. Sorry to those who followed, rest assured I'm sure I lost more money than you! Will get it right though, just needs more hard work..

Without any shadow of a doubt some of these Armenian's and Bosnian's are behaving in an ''unprofessional'' way, but it's tough to know for sure when it will happen, it's probably best to only oppose some of these terrible San Marinese and Andorran teams when they play more reliable sides. No more hard work needed, your work is very good, it's just a lesson learned.

Re: UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round 2nd leg > 10th - 11th July Not sure what to think after the first qualifying rounds of this season's European competitions. The most striking and surprising aspect for me has been the performance of Andorran and Sammarinese sides - while the majority of their games have still ended in defeats, overall it's surely been the best performance from clubs from both countries to date. For Andorra, Lusitanos and Santa Coloma recorded draws in their home games, while UE Santa Coloma only lost 1-0 away; for San Marino, La Fiorita fell to the narrowest of defeats, 1-0 to a 90th minute penalty, in their away leg, while Libertas kept both their games to single-goal defeats...the most remarkable result of all, however, was Tre Penne 1-0 Shirak - the first time a Sammarinese side (domestic or national) has ever won a competitive game in European competition; a quite astonishing result. Are we seeing an upturn in fortunes for the minnows? For years, opposing these sides has been among the most consistently reliable betting strategies - while not likely to yield huge dividends, you could usually be very confident that it was safe. This season's results suggest that it may not be quite so cast iron, which isn't too encouraging.

Re: UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round 2nd leg > 10th - 11th July Yep, very interesting results which have gone against us in what has been in recent years a good way of making money. Sorry for those who followed the Prestatyn tip...I think I would make the same bet again though I guess the downside to these bets is that knowledge is always limited to some extent. My knowledge of Prestatyn is pretty good but all I know about Liepajas is based on stats, uefa coefficient etc. I wonder if the minnows are on the up or whether the results are a statistical anomaly or (in some cases) related to something more sinister? The results of the minnows do seem to have got better across the board which suggests an upturn, but then again you'd have to ask why this would be?? Maybe a gradual improvement in coaching and investment which has certainly also been seen in some of the international teams such as Luxembourg and Andorra, if not yet San Marino.

I think it's hard to draw conclusions on any one year. I've noticed you often get a pattern of 'unders' goals in a part of a competition one year, and then 'overs' the next - I think it might just be random events rather than a trend one way or another. I do think there might be some value in backing a minnow underdog in a second leg if they lost the first leg heavily, because the superior team has less motivation, knowing they're almost certainly through.

Christ knows why Twente were in the first qual round anyway.. I wouldn't get carried away with the results this year, I thought Libertas looked utterly terrible and a better side would have hammered them, unfortunately Sarajevo weren't up to it, and Libertas scored with their only shot on target of the night. Had the same with Santa Coloma last week, 1 shot on target 1 goal. Look at the results over 2 legs and there have been plenty of hammerings about 7 games - looking quickly - had agg victories of 4 goals or more, I have had a tactic of looking more at countries than teams as a way of gauging probable performance in recent years, perhaps need to look at the sides they are playing more and cast the net further in other games. These things move in cycles, for years you would bet against Welsh and N.Irish sides almost blind as they were always useless, now proving far more resilient. I'll be honest though I would play those Sarajevo bets again in a heartbeat, I really didn't see anything there - until the massive odds changes before the second leg - that I thought would trip me up. Look at the next round though, so many more better sides coming in, the comparison to the standard of teams in this round looks staggering on paper - Lech Poznan, Standard Liege, Utrecht, Anorthosis Fam. etc.

It is difficult to say regarding second leg results after one-sided first leg games. Now that this season's round of games are completed, Andorran sides record in Europe now reads P75, W1, D6, L68; for Sammarinese sides, it's P50, W1, D4, L45. This means that, in the vast majority of cases, they have lost both the first and second legs. I'd be inclined to think their opponents would, more often than not, still be motivated to win the second leg after a convincing first leg victory - if the manager uses it as an opportunity to give a few fringe players in a game, they should be motivated to stake their claim for a place in the team, and would the country's coefficient not benefit with another victory? Yet look at this season, for example - Breidablik failing to win away to Santa Coloma...they showed in the first leg they're a class above them, so was this down to complacency? It's hard to tell. What you say about Welsh and Northern Irish sides is very true - as well as Prestatyn's result, in recent years we've had Bangor City eliminating Honka, Llanelli winning their first leg against Dinamo Tbilisi, Cefn Druids holding Mypa in their first leg, Glentoran eliminating Renova, Linfield drawing with Rosenborg and BATE...the days of double figure aggregate defeats only a few years ago seem a long way away. Wouldn't like to think Andorran and Sammarinese sides are going the same way!

Re: UEFA Europa League 1st Qualifying Round 2nd leg > 10th - 11th July The Welsh results have been interesting. I think the standard of football is generally equivalent to Conference North/South level, and that's only for the top Welsh clubs. I think they have done well basically through great commitment and effort, these games are massive for them and they have risen to the occasion. Fair play to them, despite me losing some money! Interesting posts above on the other teams, I guess we have to wait til next year or beyond to tell if the Andorran and Sanmarinese sides have really improved.
