Re: Paul Hanagan worst Champion Jockey for years ?

That wasnt the case with Gritstone (i think) the other week.
Well, I did say 'almost always' and Gritstone had been beaten by a whopping 11, 18.5 & 9 lengths on his previous three starts. Given that Hanagan was embroiled in a bitter fight for the title at that time, it's not surprising that Fahey and Hanagan decided to let him ride the favourite Key Breeze instead. Once they realised that Gritstone had taken so well to the A-W, Hanagan of course replaced Topliss for the follow-up win on Oct 31.

Strongly disagree with much of this. Godolphin is certainly not a 'gambling' stable. When they put Ajtebi on board it certainly isn't just to 'get a big price about the horse'. I don't think that's the case with Tylicki or Topliss (or Hamilton or McHugh) riding for Fahey either. And they don't 'get the odd ride ahead of Hanagan'. They get rides simply because Hanagan can't be in two places at once and is sometimes suspended or injured (and sometimes also Fahey has more than one runner in the same race). When Fahey has a runner in the race but Hanagan rides for a different stable, it is almost always because the Fahey runner has practically no real chance. In which case it makes sense to put up a 'lesser' jockey anyhow, since theoretically the horse would likely then finish an additional length or two behind, which might lead to a better handicap mark in future.
I already said that!

Re: Paul Hanagan worst Champion Jockey for years ? Just like to say what a great effort from silvrestre too. He was PLUS SIXTY FIVE in the handicaps for the jockeys championship at the start of the year. He's done well to deputise for Joe Fanning, I wonder if he will be off to Stoute's this Winter if Moore joins O"Brien or whether Fanning will be ousted out of Johnston's

Not really sure why De Sousa would prefer to be Stoute's stable jockey rather than Johnston's. After all, the Stoute stable is in decline (97 turf wins in 2007, including 19 Group winners compared to only 47 turf wins this year and only six in Group races). Okay, Stoute's horses are better 'class' than Johnston overall, but De Sousa has serious title aspirations, and he would have practically no chance of the title if he were to take a job with Stoute. Having said that, De Sousa would have every right to be miffed with Johnston, who sent him on a wild goose chase to ride Fox Hunt in Australia last week, when he should have been fighting it out for the championship. It must be pretty galling for Silvestre to miss out by only four wins after that debacle.

The main reason why SDS has ridden so much for Johnston this year though has been because Fanning picked up that heel injury. Last season and inbetween riding for Johnston this year, SDS has filled his spare mounts with rides for the likes of Ann Duffield, Paul Green and other small northern trainers - no disrespect intended. Surely SDS would rather ride decent horses (as he would for Stoute) rather than dividing Johnston's rides with Fanning - that's assuming Fanning is used as widely as he was before injury. There is no Greg Fairley (tree surgeon now isn't he?) which should open up more opportunities for MJ but SDS is big enough to be a stable jockey somewhere himself now? Admittedly its been a dire year for Stoute and surely Moore will be on the ferry quicker than you can say 'miserable', but you never know what crop he will have next year? Just my thoughts anyway

Yes, Fanning was out injured for a while over the summer, but it seems that since then he has been very much overtaken by De Sousa in the Johnston pecking order, e.g. at Ascot on 15 Oct (Gp 3), De Sousa is on 10/1 shot Colour Vision and Fanning on 50/1 shot Eternal Heart.

Re: Paul Hanagan worst Champion Jockey for years ? Odds are up for 2012 Championship: 7/2 (all best price) Moore and De Sousa 4/1 Hanagan and Fallon 13/2 Hughes ...33/1 bar Have to say that at these odds De Sousa and Hanagan look the most tempting, whereas Fallon's price is surely too short as he just doesn't really seem inclined to put in the graft over a whole season (well over 200 rides fewer than Hanagan this year). And presumably if Ryan Moore were to become Aidan O'Brien's stable jockey then that would result in far fewer rides over here. Not sure I can be bothered to bet though, as it means tying the cash up for a whole year!
