Re: Golf: The Open Championship Sorted then woodie ! Easy peesy when you look at those stats! I just love this tournament, its the one i look forward to most in the year, starting at 6am on Thursday morning. The beeb even have coverage thorughout which is excellent & when you have to go out, Radio 5 live is on with coverage :ok There are ups & downs, links golf is the most unpredictable golf in the world. 1st round leaders never win, in fact i think the title of 1st round leader should win a prize also! Personally i felt we were overdue a home winner & then Padraig came along, fancy the hat trick anyone, i wouldnt be surprised if Harrington is amongst them again on day 4. Can sergio exercise his demons & finally putt well enough to win a major. What i do know is that the top 20 will include some of the worlds best golfers as not only does the tournament test thier game, it is also a mental test of attitude especially with the changing weather over the 4 days. Cant wait to get into this & will post up bets by Weds this week.

Re: Golf: The Open Championship

I don't think Padraig will win it. Looked in pieces with his game at the US Open. 33/1's a decent price if he's found it again but I'll be looking elsewhere I think.
Last year he couldnt even pick a club up the day before & only passed fit on the evening before, still won with ease in a Tigerless Open. If Tiger is on form, he may be unstoppable, whats his record at the Open? Will put it up when i find it, but pretty impressive. Not sure about the age stat above after Kenny Perry won the Masters & also Greg Norman nearly won this last year.

Perry never won the Masters. He should've done though ;).

Re: Golf: The Open Championship

must have fallen asleep in those last few holes !!! I backed the winner Carbera!! He was over 40' date=' i think![/quote'] Not quite Bowlesy, 40 this year ;). I actually fancy him this week but surely he can't win 2 majors in the same year :unsure.

Re: Golf: The Open Championship For some reason I find Cabrera wins one decent tourny per year and does little for the rest of it. I have had Cabrera in mind for an Open win for the last two years and then each year he has gone and won the US Open in 08 and the Masters this year to ruin my punting plan. I am going to leave Cabrera this year and row in with the Camillo Villegas. Camillo is used to playing in strong winds having learnt the game in Columbia which was highlighted when he broke the 2nd Round Open record at Royal Birkdale in 2008 at the Open shooting 65. His recent record in the majors is good finishing 13th in this year's Masters, 4th in the 2008 USPGA and 9th in the 2008 US Open. He's available currently at 55/1.

Re: Golf: The Open Championship I've gone for Lee Westwood e/w @ 28/1 with Boylesports...each way 1/4 odds first seven places. Westwood is knocking the flags down and should have won the Scottish Open but for some suspect putting. (most of the putts were missing on the right which would suggest he was moving his head to sneak a peek at the hole) The fact that he's been drawn with Tiger for the first two round should keep him focused.:D Roll on Thursday!:ok Good luck all TQM

Re: Golf: The Open Championship IAN POULTER E/W 30/1 P/POWER 1-7 Playing really well this year and has threatened to win one. At times has been better known for his trousers and antics etc rather than his golf but has knuckled down and i think he is capable of winning a major and would be great to see this colourful character do so. Have also had a win bet at 40's on BF on surprise, surprise Rory McIlroy. Best of luck whoever you bet:ok

Re: Golf: The Open Championship Complete lottery at the moment for me will get involved in the outright market on day 3 and 4. One that I'm backing pre is Furyk and prob Fisher pre only small. Will be getting involved in the 3 balls this year. Michael Campbell @ 999/1 could be worth a min bet on betfair starting of nice and early and he knows how to post a score. Will be interesting for sure.

Re: Golf: The Open Championship Well i really can't wait for this years open at Turnberry, always my favourite sporting event in the calendar. Finish work tomorrow for the rest of the week, going down on Wednesday at 6 for the practice day as and iv'e never been to Turnberry and i'm looking forward to hopefully seeing a bit more of tiger(amongst others) for only the second time since 2000. I'l try post a the odd picture or two if anyone's interested. Thursday onwards its a case of becoming a hermit for four days, with only the delivery driver being allowed anywhere near my front door.:) Seriously though, links golf cannot be beaten imo/full stop, its what the game is all about with so many different types of shotmaking and creativity thats involved, instead of the usual target golf we get week in week out. Having said that i'm happy to see links golf so rarely, it's part of the reason the Open Championship is so special, unique and the by far the most coveted title in golf. Not had any time to look at how the course may play this week, and crucially what the weather forecast is for the week. Not had the time as of yet to look at any markets either, bar the outright winner, and my initial thoughts are to stay away from Garcia, poor form,bottle/mental state, putting??? plus his price is fckin laughable. Harrington's price is also poor and simply can't be backed on his current form. If the weather looks poor for the week, the long very high trajectory ball strikers like Casey, Cabrera, Scott, Goosen and perhaps Els can also be opposed this week imo.Look at Mickelson's record in the open, He's hits it as high as anyone, and although he attempts to plays all the low punchy shots, his record is poor.Woods is just Woods and can win an Open playing irons off the tee. Just thinking of the top of my head, previous winners of the open including the last winner at Turnberry Nick Price and also the likes of Norman, Lehman, O,Meara, Calcavechia, Leonard, Faldo, hamilton, and Harrington, these guys are all very different from a few mentiontioned before, as in they are all much more deliberate ball strikers, not as long, and ultimately more accurate. Norman could hit it a mile of couse but is regarded as probably the the best driver of a ball ever with regards to lenth and accuracy. With this in mind, players like Furyk, Stricker, Mahan, Poulter, Gay, Johnson, Ogilvy, O'hair and Fisher, could be the men to be on this week, but as i said it's just an initial thought. Anyway time to get to work, but with time issues and the weather being so crucial,i'm gonna leave it late with, most of my bets will probably be posted late wed night/early thursday morning. Hopefully i'l get a couple up tomorrow though. Best of luck lads, lets hope it's a classic, one of us finds the winner and we all make a profit.:ok

Don't back Michael Campbell mate. Seriously. It's an event in itself these days when he breaks 80. Shame to see but that is where his game is at I'm afraid.

Re: Golf: The Open Championship right sitting comfortably?, then we'll begin all the following are outright EW, first 6 with Stan James TIM CLARK 150/1, i'm a big fan of wee Timmy and for me this price is way too long, he is very accurate off the tee, and hits the ball low which on a links is the better option, while his recent open record is'nt great he would be more a 70s shot for me so i'm taking him at this silly price HENRIK STENSON 35/1, mr consistency in the EPGA tour, and he has the game and mantal toughness to be victorious here, last year he was tied for third, and i reckon he will be in the mix come sunday tea time. Camilo Villegas, 55/1, he has been tipped here earlier and not without justification, this man is good and will win a lot of enets though can he cope with the links in Ayrshire, you bet he can brought up golfing in south america with the wind of the atlantic, he'll think he is back home ! ernie els 33/1.you write this man off at your peril , 8 top 15 finishes in the last 12 years, runner up 3 times, winner once and third twice, that is the mark of a player who can play links golf, only tigesr record betters the big easy, his price is sure to come in and i for one would expect him to have another top 15 finish this week, no doubt about it. justin rose 100/1 has'nt been doing much this season but always plays well on these shores and his game is perfect for this course a good value bett this one. justin leonard 90/1 former winner and twice in top 15 too since 98, much as i dislike the man especially after the ryder cup exploits, i am happey to cash in on him i expect him to be challenging at some point in the event. stewart cink 135/1 another grossly overpriced player for me he is always a strong majors performer and twice top 15 in last 5 years, has a strong overall game and vastly experienced i would say real value here at EW. lee westwood 30/1 one day he has to win a major he is too good not to getting back to form now and if he putts well he is a big threat here, his open record is dire just one top15 finish in twelve years that was 4th at troon so he has previous on the ayrshire coast! hunter mahan 50/1 i got this price after the US open and thought id grab that was in the mix there and last year he was tied 6th in the open, he is a star in the making and i expect return from him this week ian poulter 33/1 again this price just after us open, runner up lat year and had he had a few more holes and harrington a bit less luck he would have been open champion, was putting on fire last year and i will be watching him closer then a constituency part watches it's MPS expenses claims

Re: Golf: The Open Championship :loon just looked on BF its 3.65 for Tiger to win 32 bar quiet amazing no way would i open my wallet and back him at that price in this field but very tempted to lay him and almost certain you will get a bigger price in running for him to win anyway. Complete madness 3.65 imo.

Re: Golf: The Open Championship A great event in prospect this week and good luck to everyone whoever they select. Certainly I wouldn’t say to anyone not to back any particular individual particular on a forum where selections are supposedly encouraged. Remember Greg Norman and also unknown amateur Wood being placed last year and even Curtis and Hamilton winning it as unknowns a few years ago. Anyway outrights for me now on both the championship itself and specialist markets. I will come back with some 3 balls for the first round before the start. 48 pts staked on outrights and a reluctant non pick of Stenson who I could easily see going very close again this week: H.Mahan 33/1 sj 5 pts e.w (1/4 odds 6 places) and top American w/Woods 8/1 cor 5 pts I advised Mahan at the US Open and I thought he was unlucky in that final round there. He played as good as golf tee to green as anyone and going to the 16th hole he was bang in contention only to see his approach smack the pin and bounce over 50 yards away, fail to get up and down and then 3 putt the next and ultimately just come up short. However he has bounced back so well and clearly is one of the form golfers around. He came fourth in his next event and then just failed to get to Tiger despite a last round 62 lto and eventually came second. He has been pretty solid stuff for a while as shown by no missed cut since the PGA last year and just lately has upped it a touch. Also he has some Open pedigree when he came through with a 65 in the last round two years back to get to sixth. Overall he is a man in form who I can see going really well this week. J.Furyk 33/1 pp 5 pts e.w (1/4 odds 7 places) and top American w/Woods 8/1 cor 5 pts Furyk is always a golfer who seems to be bang in contention in majors and that includes the Open. He strangely missed 5 cuts in a row in it but each side of that he has 4 top 5s and also 2 other top 12 finishes so he is no stranger to links golf. His consistency this year has been very good without winning, 8 times he has been in the top 11 in events and that’s very solid. I also reiterate what I said on the masters thread about his putting. It seems to have improved a bit this year, certainly the stats on his putting are much better than in previous years and given that after a larger sample size as well that’s pretty good. I often think the better putters really propser at the Open and I could see another solid performance by Furyk this week. L.Donald 90/1 boy 3 pts e.w (1/4 odds 7 places) and top European 40/1 spo 2 pts e.w (1/4 odds 4 places) Donald is a golfer like a few Brits who has not fulfilled his real promise as he once suggested too. Indeed he is bordering on becoming disappointing but I don’t think he is one to completely give up on yet. He started the year well enough on comeback from a wrist injury suffered last year. He had a second and also 5 other top 14 finishes although most of them were in the early part of the year. Since then though his form hasn’t been as good in his most recent outings and also his Open record in general is poor. However he can still play links golf fine, he came very close to winning the dunhill links event a few years back and I also like the way his putting stats are this year. He features right near the top of PPR and indeed tops PPGIR. If he can translate that to the greens in Scotland he could be a danger still. F.Jacobson 250/1 pp 2 pts e.w (1/4 odds 7 places) and top European 80/1 pp 2 pts e.w (1/4 odds 4 places) A bit of a wild shot here but one with a bit of Open pedigree of sorts and whilst his form is extremely inconsistent, he has had a couple noteworthy events this year. The current world no.101 has had two top 5s and well as an 11 place so it is not as if his game has gone completely. Also he had to come through qualifying to get here and played a couple of good rounds to get here. In 2003 he was 6th in the Open and even last year he was better than the T19 suggests, he had 3 solid rounds that week just for a 79 on sat to really hit him and cost him automatic entry for this year. He is another one who can be very hot with the putter when in form and he could surprise.

For your information, I don't discourage any selections. I encourage all selections but I don't encourage throwing money away, no matter how small it is. The difference between all those you mentioned is they showed some sort of recent form. Even the Amateur. Michael Campbell hasn't even threatened to make a cut this season. The two majors he's played he's finished +16 and +11 and his last 2 Opens he's accumulated +28 in 4 rounds of golf. I'm all for a value punt at big odds, I'm considering one or two this week myself but there is no value in Campbell who I sense has something more than poor form wrong with his game. However if you want to back him, be my guest. Woodie, sorry mate if you thought I was slagging your post off, I wasn't. I just wanted you to be aware of the state of Campbell's game :ok.

Re: Golf: The Open Championship H.Mahan 33/1 Stan James (6 places 1/4 odds) I'll jump on the Mahan bandwagon again as I also backed him at the US Open and he played some good stuff, his been in decent form since and I think its only a matter of time before we see him win a biggy, all this previously experience of going close can only spur him on more. On a side note, I can't be having Tiger at 5/2 best (price), does anyone actually take this? :\

Re: Golf: The Open Championship at the odds i am happy to bet w/o woods in this looking at around 10 bets to be honest in the outrights w/o woods I keep thinking this is the stage that Justin Rose can get his game back on song, 100/1 in the w/o woods market looks too high to me to miss M A Jiminez is another at that price who has the ability to win a big event & i will look thorugh his Open form to see if there is any mileage in backing him this week Villegas at 40/1 w/o woods - WHY? although i like this guy why is in the top 20 in the betting? will do some more tomorrow

Re: Golf: The Open Championship McIlroy price is ridiculous imo, 22/1 on coral. I think i'm guna side with Ben Curtis who has performed well here in the last 2 years finishing in the top 10 as well as that vital experience of winning a major. At 66/1 he's the best value bet there is imo. I'm also backing Andres Romero who also has a good record here coming in the top 10 twice in the last 3 years. Ross Fisher is worth a punt due to his constantly improving game even though his record here isnt great.

Re: Golf: The Open Championship not long now the greatest sporting event in my calendar the weather here at present is over cast tuesday it rained on & off with some really heavy showers the last of the players arrived at prestwick on monday lunch so no jet lag problems for the start of the tourny a few players have dropped into prestwick golf club all have said the rough at turnberry is frightening and if you remember theres no cover from the wind of the sea i think some of the younger players can master the course with their iron play edfors, romero, villegas & quiros as for tiger hes decide to stay in ireland and travel over by helicopter that may affect his normal routine my money is going on poulter westwood & fernandez-castano although ???????????????????????????????????????????????? look out for mahan, hoffman, snedeker & marino
