Trotter
Re: Horse Racing Glossary / Q&A Hi gary.........:) Just take the first race....... Time/F is the time per furlong, so in that first race it's the total time divided by 17 furlongs. Comparison is the time of the race compared to a 'standard time' for the course and distance Comp per F if the comparison per furlong..........so in this race it was run at 1.74 seconds per furlong above ( or slower than ) the 'standard time' Allowance........having seen all the races and got all the race times the 'speed buffs' then try and work out the effect of the going on race times by comparing todays times against a set of 'standard times' for the course based on races of a standard class of races on good going. The allowance is an attempt to determine how much the going is responsible for slowing the horses down in todays conditions In this case the speed buffs reckon that the ground was responsible for slowing all horses by 1.53 seconds per furlong. So.......if, for example, a horse had run at 1.53 seconds per furlongs slower than 'standard time'.........the going allowance would be taken off and he would be credited with having run the standard time for the purposes of working out his speed rating. (a) If a horse is to run in a hood, blinkers, visor, eyeshield, eyecover, sheepskin cheek pieces or a tongue strap a declaration to that effect must be made to the Racing Calendar Office by the time fixed for making declarations to run under Order 124(ii) and in the manner laid down for making declarations. (b) If a horse is to run in a hood fitted with blinkers both must be declared as must any combination of hood, blinkers, visor, eyeshield, eyecover or sheepskin cheek pieces. Pretty sure that cheek pieces are 'p' so I'm not sure what 'c' is.........

Does anyone know of a site where I could download the form of a horse that ran in a race in the past? It seems that a form is only available for "todays" race - it's not included in the archive of previous results from the Racing Post or Sporting Life. Many thanks! mowgli77
Re: Horse Racing Glossary / Q&A It exists on RP site by looking at previous form but won't be displayed as a formline. I'm trying to automate a download from the Racing Post website - specifically, a days' race cards. i.e. Restricted Access I've done some coding in a programming language - python - but it never gets past the, "Restricted Access" page. So, I don't think my code is correct. Are there any python experts here, with previous experience of scraping the Racing Post website? gbettle
Re: Horse Racing Glossary / Q&A Howdy all! Hope this message finds every well - roll on the weekend! Quick question regarding a Horse's form ( from Adrian Massey's brilliant site): ( NB: If the above image doesn't come through, I'll repost.) 2006-04-04, Money Hills's form was 087490-. The previous race, when he came 13th, was in 2005 so "0" ( >9th) and "-" are added to the form. Fine. His first race in 2007 was 324 days later, and the 8th Position from the 2006-04-04 race is added to the form, but with a "/" instead of a "-". So, the form that day is, "087490-8/" My question is why a "/" and not a "-"? 324 days is not greater than or equal to 12 months, which is what I thought "/" meant. Many thanks! Trotter
Re: Horse Racing Glossary / Q&A Looking at the above it might be that he's using '-' to denote new season and '/' to denote change of code from Flat to Jumps then back to Flat......... Anyway..........I popped in here to post a link to this French results site......... http://www.zeturf.com/en/resultats I was going spare waiting for either the Life or The Post to stick up a result from France.........2.45 race, neither had the result by 6.00......it was a proper Group race as well, not some claimer out in the sticks. Shocking......... So I googled around and found the French site.............
Trilobite
Re: Horse Racing Glossary / Q&A The Dash "-" denotes a new year. The forward slash "/" denotes 12 months or more since it run, but it is specific to racing code. In other words horse A could of ran just 2 days ago on the flat but today it is the first time in a jumps race for 12 months or more, and so the form-line would end in a "/" .
