I really doubt it to be honest. I would place quite a few teams above them strength wise and they haven't strengthened that well, indeed Halifax who came up with them have impressed me more with their signings. Sent from my GT-I8190N using PL Forum

Funny that....when I was saying the same things about Watford last year,,,people were saying they will never get promotion with Loan Deals..They were right, but only just..only just...Loan deals for me bring a fresh look and ideas to a team,,,Even if they go, their ideas still stick around...

I think though that in the conference it is much harder for a loan player from a top side to adjust. I am not saying that some players turn out to be decent but I wouldn't want to be backing a team in the summer based on the fact they may get some loan players in and you don't even know who they will be. Chester won't finish in the top 3 this season. Sent from my GT-I8190N using PL Forum

Slightly different with them though wasn't it? The same person was paying their wages so they had the incentive to perform well for their longer term prospects. Whoever goes out on loan to Chester will more than likely head back to their original club and get shoved out to another place and not have any attachment for anything to do with Chester or wherever.

Re: England > Weekend > BlueSQ Bet Prem Aug 10 This is going off on a tangent...up to 13 new signs already, with more to come, possibly short term loans from local clubs...The players they have signed are a mixture... who know what it takes to get out of this div, and young ones released by others in div1 n div2..looking for another chance..Hungry..So I think they will do very well...if you don't... fairy muff!:ok

Re: England > Weekend > BlueSQ Bet Prem Aug 10 Don´t forget Gareth Seddon who Halifax were happy to offload. That´s not to knock Gareth Seddon, it didn´t really go well for him at Halifax, though he still made a useful contribution, they did however have more productive options upfront at the end. With the influx of so many new players to an already successful squad it will take skilful management to keep everyone happy and avoid resentment. This is my personal opinion but when a team comes up in the style of Chester the bulk of the team who have done so well should be given a crack, and change should be more gradual. Additionally any players dropping a level to play for Chester will have to adapt to part time football it could be a culture shock for some, just another unknown.

Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Aug 10 Bet365 and BetVics have taken a risk and offered some prices on Grimsby/Aldershot - BetVics were best at 4/7 for the match, and Bet365 went 13/10 Grimsby HT/FT. The best match price is now 1/2 and the HT/FT is in to 11/10. Aldershot's best chance is spoiling for a point but you need to be well drilled for that - if Aldershot's embargo has been lifted they'll potentially have a fairly experienced side that has hardly played together; if it isn't the squad will be heavy with untried Academy players. At this stage, I'd say 11/10 HT/FT is the right side of value.

Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Aug 10 Some spreads out at Spreadex and though I'll not be heavily involved first weekend - half-stakes, generally conservative approach in an attempt to see some growth in the bank - I can't ignore a buy of total goals in Grimsby/Aldershot at 2.9. New signings are trickling through the door at Aldershot - Brett Williams signed on this morning - but it's hard to fathom what their approach will be at the moment: attack or spoiling? We know what Grimsby's approach will be - they'll go at them with a brick hammer, especially after a couple of limp showings in pre-season that will remove any complacency from the dressing room. You'll be needing the defensive organisation of a Braintree to keep them out and that's something that Aldershot just haven't had time to drill into the squad. Aldershot aren't without an attacking threat - they've scored healthily (and conceded rather too heavily) pre-season against mostly Conference South opposition - and, given that the nature of this league where first-day favourites often end up struggling, it's not impossible that Grimsby will concede. Most likely though, is a solid opening 20 minutes from Aldershot before the lack of game time and training together takes its toll and I can see the last 20 minutes belonging totally to the home side, especially if the Aldershot side is shored up with youngsters. My goal expectation is higher than 2.9. Although I make Kidderminster favourites against Gateshead, they're nowhere near the sort of one-goal-and-a-bit favourites Spreadex think they are. I'm very happy to be backing Gateshead EW at 66s for the season (see the antepost thread) and I think Kevshat's pick on the handicap is an excellent one. Though Josh Gillies has gone they're a side with much more attacking intent these days, with the option of switching from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 as the game dictates (though I should add that new signing Richard Brodie is a slight doubt for the game, and they are definitely missing James Curtis). Both sides have had good pre-seasons and both seem better on the front foot rather than the back - that's how I think this game will be played. Although it's a risk, I've sold the time of the 2nd Gateshead goal at 81 - even if they don't turn up, the downside is small.

Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Aug 10 Grimsby v Aldershot Aldershot manager Andy Scott came out on Thursday and said he had no idea what players he will be able to play on Saturday as the Conference have still not lifted a transfer embargo on the club. If they don’t lift it in time for the game then they will be very short and numbers. Even if they do Scott admitted they are still low on numbers and because of all the problems over the summer the team have had very little time to prepare. They have struggled in pre-season which is understandable given they have had to play so many players on trial and although they need to get off to a quick start given they start on -10, it is easy to think they might struggle to start with given all the issues. It doesn’t exactly help that they have to travel to one of the likely promotion contenders Grimsby on the first day of the season. Grimsby should really be licking their lips over the fact they have to play Aldershot on the first day of the season and although the first day can bring some funny results, it will be disappointing if Grimsby don’t win this fairly easily. The best two bets to have to me is the ht/ft which Coral have priced up at 5/4 and over 3.5 goals which BetVictor and Boylesports go 11/5 about. Kidderminster v Gateshead The home side’s awful start to last season has been well documented as has there brilliant finish which saw them finish second to Mansfield. As I have written in my ante-post preview I can’t help but think that they missed their best chance of promotion last season. They will still be there or thereabouts though, but so, in my opinion, will their opening day rivals Gateshead. Gateshead struggled last season, but they have signed well over the summer and look to have a strong side that should easily see them finish in the top 10, with a chance of higher. Stan James and Boylesports are both 5/1 about an away win and that looks well worth a speculative first day punt. Macclesfield v Nuneaton Here we have two sides who have two of the lowest wage budgets in the league and look set to struggle this season. Those of you who have read my ante-post piece will know that I have backed Nuneaton to go down and they might well get off to a slow start. They have had a tough pre-season with injuries and that is going to hinder them on the first day of the season. Also it is worth bearing in mind that Nuneaton struggled away from home last season and it wouldn’t surprise me if that happened again this. Macclesfield have had to greatly reduce the playing budget from last season, but I still think manager John Askey has built a fairly decent squad, which in my view looks stronger than Nuneaton’s. With Paddy Power and BetVictor both going a shade of odds against at 21/20 that looks to me the best bet of the weekend. Treble There are 3 home sides who I think will all win over the weekend. The first is obviously Grimsby, whilst the second is my tip for the title Forest Green Rovers who host Hyde. Hyde did well to stay up last season and they may well be able to do so again, but I think a very strong looking Forest Green side can hit the ground running and get their first three points of the season. The final team in the treble is Cambridge United who host Halifax in BT Sport’s first ever live Skrill Premier game at 12pm on Sunday. Cambridge are my other tips for the league and although I do think Halifax can finish in the top half they may just take a little bit of time to adjust to the step-up, which Cambridge can take advantage of. The treble pays 3.2/1 with Coral.

Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Aug 10 I'm taking one more second goal sell: Chester at 80 with Sporting. I think they've a reasonable chance in this game. They have been using the width of the pitch to good effect in pre-season as well as getting some quality deliveries in. I said in the antepost preview that I'm wary of Barnet. Instinctively I feel they'll do okay but I just don't have the knowledge of their formation and the players they're bedding in to make that judgement stick enough to come up with a betting strategy. There is something of the wildcard about them, but I think it's fair to say that they may not be the strongest defensive unit at the moment. They've been playing a four, but there's been some gap-filling at right back and left back, and those are the areas that may well be exposed by Chester's formation. Sporting have some player goal minutes quotes out. One play from last season that did okay for me was Connor Jennings in his Stockport days. He's at Macclesfield now and I think addpea is right to highlight Nuneaton's weaknesses this weekend. He's 20 to buy and that has some appeal - the one thing I need to establish is whether he's playing out wide. Liam Hearn at 24 also looks a buy for Grimsby Town but again I'm not 100 per cent sure he'll start in the middle of the three. Having said that, they'll probably mix it up and given the likely defensive weaknesses of Aldershot that's my most likeliest play.

Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Aug 10-11 Skrill is something whales eat. I won't use it. First three weeks in Conference is the only time all season I'll back draws in games involving dogs of better than 6.0...the imbalance between top and bottom teams has been far greater in this league than in the football leagues, so the funny results in early season are almost always draws. Small big dogs (if that makes sense) of 3.something to 3.99 (against favorites of 1.99 or under) have split their upsets between wins and draws, and let me show you an astounding figure from the past five years: 6-6-2. That's the record of all underdogs of 3.something to 4.99 to favorites of 1.99 or under in week one. Accordingly, I'm on: DRAW Wrexham-Welling @ 3.92 Kidderminster-Gateshead @ 4.17 Forest Green-Hyde @ 4.19 My book has no offer on Grimsby-Aldershot, for which I'm grateful. WIN Southport over Luton (Luton 4-2-4 last season as a big favorite away) @ 4.04 Braintree over Hereford @ 3.69 Book: 5dimes

Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Aug 10-11 Poor day for me today. Total goals in Grim/Aldershot finished 0.9 shy of the line, and neither Chester nor Gateshead notched a second. I was also covering the HT/FT Grimsby play, though you have to say hats off to the Shots today for a massive performance. Great calls by ATT on Grimsby X and Tamworth - superb prices!

Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Aug 10-11 4pts Cambridge vs Halifax - Over 2.5 goals 4/5 BetVictor I think we’ll see goals in this match. Cambridge look pretty powerful going forward now with Adam Cunnington in their ranks while Halifax have nothing to lose and can give this a good go with not many expecting them to win. Neither side look the best at the back and add in a bit of defensive rust and there’s every reason to believe we will see a few goals in this game. Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Aug 10-11 One spread trade appeals on the live game: a buy of Josh Wilson's goal minutes at 5 with Spreadex. He's unquoted by Sporting, perhaps because they think he's an unlikely starter Halifax starter, which would have been true before the injury to Dan Gardner at Stockport. It's most likely that Wilson won't start, in which case the trade will be void, but if he does it'll almost certainly be because he'll be operating in Gardner's role behind Lee Gregory in a central attacking role, from where he's likely to get a chance or two. It's a decent play in the circumstances.

Very glad...Tamworth and Aldershot cashing along with Southport made for a great day here. It was all losses in the other leagues for me (unposted), with the worst being the 94' own goal that scuttled my draw in Blackpool.
