Dubai Carnival

I know it's not everyones cup of tea so I thought instead of clogging up the days flat racing thread or daily chat thread, I would start a separate thread just for Dubai bets or general chit chat? It gets underway properly on Thursday and there looks to be some very good racing over there. There are a couple of horses I am really interested in for different reasons. Firstly Rex Imperator who I thought was going to be a world beater but his form tailed off quite badly in his last few runs and it will be interesting to see what sort of form he returns in. The other one is Balmont Mast who is progressing rapidly on the all weather and has turned into a real top class sprinter. I think he could be one to follow over there for a trainer who does well with his runners in Dubai. As usual I think Godolphin are worth following with nearly all of their runners but I will have a proper look at the racing tomorrow.

Re: Dubai Carnival

Always get drawn in by this but always get flattened out. Graveyard!
It's usually a mixed bag for me but should be quite interesting this year as more and more horses from Europe are being sent over due to the unbelievable prize money on offer

Re: Dubai Carnival @CPO I do like the racing from different countries besides the usual Uk and Irish racing, I do bets in RSA (Turffontein, Clairwood, Vaal etc) I was in the bookies a couple of weeks ago and there was racing from Jebel Ali I nearly did a bet on a horse called Tis was Tis Then and it won a 14/1, shame I didn't get the docket written in time. I'll keep an eye on the results for Thursdays meeting.

One of my earliest horse racing memories actually came at Jebel Ali race track. My dad was friend with one of the stable jockeys there who was an Irish lad called Paul and he took us to the stables to see all the horses. I remember going up to this one stable and there must have been about 40 horses housed in there and it was actually quite dark. I wouldn't dare go inside as I though someone was going to lock us in :lol everyone assumed I was scared of the horses but I didn't dare tell them I was scared of getting locked in! Fair to say I got the piss taken out of me for being scared of horses for a while but I eventually got the guts to go inside after a few more visits. Can't say I know much about South African Racing so I don't ever bet on it unless they come over for the carnival. Mike de Kock is a very good trainer and he has a cracking record at Meydan. Usually takes a couple of weeks to get going but his runners are worth a look nonetheless.

I may have a dabble on Thurs. No time to have a decent look at the moment' date=' but will do before the racing and I'll try and add to the thread. Will be particularly interested in looking at Mikael Barzalona's rides :ok[/quote'] Looks as though he will ride for Al Zarooni and SDS for Bin Suroor

Re: Dubai Carnival Look for small trainers who have had invites from around the world, with their 1 or 2 horses. There is history of some huge value for good horses in their own countries, but seen as being poor by the bookmakers. Small trainers want to make a name for themselves in the land of the rich, hoping a horse or two will be sent to them. Tom Dascombe is one to follow here, I can see him getting some decent yearlings and 2 yo from the Arabs this season at manor house. He has had invites for four horses, I dont expect him to come back empty handed, with his first runners running on thursday.

De Kock has some good horses over there this season but it is Igugu (the horse you can see in my avatar) who will make the headlines. She's a complete superstar and one can only hope she can find her form again after the long lay-off due to quarantine restrictions. If so then she will destroy her opposition in Dubai. I think there is no better filly in the world at the moment. She completed the Durban July + J&B Met double, the two most important races in South Africa, while having a horror preparation and being only 85% fit or so in the Met. Anthony Delpech - who has won everything in RSA racing - couldn't hold his tears back in an interview after the race having been overwhelmed. Also De Kock was very emotional afterwards. That's says it all, really. J&B Met 2012: http://youtu.be/cuI-h71R8H0

Re: Dubai Carnival great start to a thread. Very good info provided so far, very informative. Been punting a long time but know virtually nothing about foreign racing, I've probably had around a dozen bets on dubai racing since it started nearly 2 decades ago. I do recall backing the first World Cup winner Cigar and a big priced one ridden by top jockey Richard Hills. I look forward to some good posts over the coming weeks.

Last year it was Steve Burridge from Singapore who did quite well with his small string. He ended the festival with the best strike rate with 4 winners from 11 races. I read somewhere that he has brought over 4 horses again this year but with very different profiles. They are unproven this year where as last year he brought over proven group horses. He said he is most looking forward to a horse with devil in its name... Can't remember exactly but it's not out tomorrow

Re: Dubai Carnival

Yes he is on my list. 23/09/2012

Trainer Steven Burridge notched a milestone with the success of Devil’s Cut in the $65,000 Fort Canning Park Stakes over 1100m on the Polytrack on Sunday.

The former Australian jockey notched his 400th success as a trainer when the $7 favourite led throughout to score a comfortable win.

Ridden by fellow Australian Stephen Baster, Devil’s Cut scored by four-and-a-quarter lengths from Fei Yue (John Powell) with Moova Bullet (Oscar Chavez) two-and-a-quarter lengths away third.

Devil%27s%20Cut%20230912.jpg Devil's Cut (Stephen Baster) is home and hosed under jockey Stephen Baster. “It’s a nice little milestone to achieve,” said Burridge who trained his first winner – Dynasty Emperor – on October 22, 2004.

“I didn’t even realise we were close to that mark. I don’t really keep any statistics.”

Devil’s Cut was a little slow to muster speed after jumping well from the barriers before finding the lead on the fence from Blue Lagoon (Mohd Zaki) as the field made their way off the back straight.

Baster held Devil’s Cut together until into the home straight where Blue Lagoon was soon under pressure with Fei Yue and Moova Bullet issuing a challenge.

But Devil’s Cut responded gamely to Baster’s urgings and the further the race went the further the gelding got out in front.

Having his first start since a debut second behind Fish Rabbitfish back on January 24, Burridge was concerned that Devil’s Cut may have been underdone for his first-up run.

“I thought first-up he might have been a bit too fresh,” said Burridge.

“They went pretty hard early and I was concerned he might knock up in the final stages, but he’s done a good job to win as easily has he has.

“He had a good break after his first start. He’s had a few little niggles that take quite a bit of looking after.

“If we can keep him sound then I think he might turn out to be OK.”

Baster said there was a lot to like about the victory of Devil’s Cut and expects him to more than pay his way into the future.

“He’s a nice horse and won with authority,” said Baster.

“We had to use him up early to keep the fence but I was worried that he was underdone going into the race.

“But at the end it was one of the easiest wins that I’ve been associated with since I came up here earlier in the year.”

Burridge offered up an interesting statistic for the trainer-jockey combination. Prior to last Friday night’s meeting Burridge had sent out 400 runners for the year gaining 56 winners while Baster had had 400 rides for the same number of wins.

But with a win on Friday night Baster took a slight lead in the “battle”.

“It’s a bit easier for me,” said Burridge. “I can get off them and ride something from another stable, but Budgie (Burridge) has to keep them.”

Devil’s Cut is a four-year-old Australian-bred by Exceed And Excel from the Silver Hawk mare Adorara. He was an A$75,000 purchase as a two-year-old and has returned connections Hippocrates Stable around $47,000 in prizemoney.

Re: Dubai Carnival I see the RP have a Dubai pull out tomorrow, I'll be getting that, but have had a quick look at the card and based on owner, trainer and jockey stats have picked out Amanee. She is the owner's only runner of the day and he has one of the best strike rates at the meeting. Soumillon will ride and she's trained by De Kock, although he does have three in the race. Hasn't raced for 250 days, but only started racing last season, as a 4yo and already has a group win. Currently joint fav with Firebeam. 5/1 paddypower

Re: Dubai Carnival 3.05 Meydan Ariete Arrollador 1pt EW @ 8/1 PaddyPower With 2lbs separating the 14 runners going to post, this is certainly not a race for the faint hearted. The current betting sees 3 joint favourites in Belgian Bill, Lily’s Angel and Yaa Wayl. Yaa Wayl is the only representative for Godolphin in this race and he has to be respected but he has only managed 2 placed efforts in 5 runs at Meydan and he might just be staying on too late in this. Lily’s Angel was initially one I was very interested in. She is 3 from 3 for her new trainer and although she was very impressive last time out, she was entitled to win that listed race as well as she did. She was rated 18lbs higher than the 2nd and they were racing off level weights. The 4th horse that wasn’t beaten that far is rated 69, which doesn’t say much for the form. She is progressing but she might just find this a little tough. The one that interests me most in this race is the Spanish raider Ariete Arrollador who had 3 runs at the track last year. I think it’s fair to say he enjoys racing on an artificial surface, as his record would suggest. He has visited Deauville 3 times and has won on each occasion. Last year he was rather unlucky to first bump into Barbecue Eddie and then to bump into Krypton Factor. Barbecue Eddie loves it at Meydan and has a great chance of winning the group 2 later on the card and Krypton Factor went on to win The Golden Shaheen last year and finished just 2.5 lengths behind Black Caviar at Royal Ascot. The form stacks up well and this extra furlong should suit my selection. He is well drawn here in 2 and should be able to stay out of any trouble. Interestingly Christophe Soumillion takes the ride on him for the first time. Mike de Kock does have a runner in the race so maybe it’s a tip in itself that the Frenchman rides this horse. He comes here on the back of a 90-day break, which should have freshened him up and he does have a good record when returning from a break from racing. I think he is a solid option in what looks an open race.
