[/TABLE] Only 6 jockeys managed to get over 100 winners. Hanagan was riding day and night all over the country but now replaces Hills and can be expected to be based down south a lot more and won't be up here riding Fahey's horses as much which could have a significant impact on his totals. On the flip side of that he is still expected to ride Fahey's horses when possible so having 2 decent yards supporting him could be a plus. Ryan Moore is back from injury and fighting fit but seems to have struck up a good relationship with Aidan O'Brien and is likely to spend a lot of Sundays in Ireland or abroad and Stoute has been poor by his own excellent standards. Hughes did well again last season and was only 35 winners behind Hanagan from around 400 less rides, also likely to spend several weekends in France/Germany etc riding for Hannon and likely to be heading off to the Breeders Cup again at a crucial time. De Sousa gets a job with Godolphin and although he is likely to be top dog in a few years will this season be all about understanding how Godolphin operate and playing 2nd fiddle to Dettori. He is also likely to get a lot of rides for the big trainers when he is not booked for Godolphin and he was only 4 winners behind Hanagan from over 100 rides less. In terms of winning the jockeys championship would you say the move to Godolphin was positive or negative? Kieren Fallon was back to his best last season but is always clouded with doubt and could just lose it and get banned at any time, the stuff with Milckzarek has done him no favours either and I'm sure there will be many keen eyes on him and not just from the punters. You have to feel that if he is in with any chance of the championship he'll put in the hours and the travelling to win that title. Fanning only managed 57 winners last season but with SDS moving on he should be getting better rides for Mark Johnston now and is a very underrated jockey, certainly knows his stuff on the all weather too. The only other 2 to break 100 winners were Spencer and Buick and both are 16-1 with a number of bookies while Spencer is 33's with Boylesports. He is still freelance and gets a lot of decent rides for a lot of different trainers but lacks the backing of a stable as 1st choice jockey. Buick is excellent in the saddle and could really make his mark this year if he is also given good rides for plenty of stables and has Gosden's backing as 1st choice there. Odds: Richard Hughes - 4/1 Ryan Moore - 4/1 Kieren Fallon 5/1 SDS - 5/1 Paul Hanagan - 7/1 (Boylesports stand out price) Coral only go 4-1 Joe Fanning - 16/1 William Buick - 16/1 Jamie Spencer - 33/1 Other prices available via odds comparison sites. At this stage who would you fancy to win the title, who do you think is the value bet and why?

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey? Fanning's reputation might just propel him into the spotlight a bit more this year - could be the SDS of this season? Like you say, should get plenty for Johnston, and ought to pick up some other decent rides too. Being so good on the all-weather, and one of the more likely jockeys to be travelling all over, night and day, might just be a decent bet at 16s.

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey? I think Fallon will give it 100% this season, I reckon Hughes is just as liable to a ban than Fallon. Could be his chance with Hanagan, Moore and SDS riding less all over the place. Worth a nibble at 5/1 in my opinion.

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey? A lot of SDS's winners were on Johnston runners when Fanning got injured, so with SDS now out of the picture, I expect Fanning to finish closer to the 100 mark next season. He's been riding well on the all-weather over the winter and you just know that Mark "scattergun" Johnston will provide him with five or six runners on every card he is riding at. Don't think he has often beaten 100 winners though. Spencer looks big at 33/1. His totals in the last five years: 190 (jt champ), 113 (3rd), 80 (12th), 88 (10th), 100 (6th)

I thought that but he previously said he wouldn't be killing himself with all that travel and riding all day and night to chase a championship again. I think if he was close towards the end of the season he might think again. Jockeys like Hanagan and SDS were riding all day then going to Windsor on a Monday night, Kempton on a Wednesday night, All weather at Wolverhampton on a Saturday night, all out really weren't they? You would never get Dettori doing that kind of thing these days, maybe Fanning will though for the extra winners.

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey? I have to agree with BH. With doubts over the number of rides of the top guys, I think Fallon will have done his homework and feels this is the right year to get back to the top. He's sure to put the hours in, will get loads of rides all over the country and 5/1 is good enough for me:ok

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey? I think Fallon at this stage is a good bet. He is at the twilight of his career but still good enough to bag in the winners on a regular basis. If he gets a good start , that will give him the momentum and motivation to see it through to the end of the season. If he's not in contention by mid summer , then he won't make the effort for the remainder of the season. R Hughes a talented but lazy jockey only makes an effort if there is something worthwhile at the end , no wonder Khaled Abdulla gave him the boot. Strange how some punters are talking about Joe Fanning as if he's recently been discovered. For those who don't know , he must be at least 40 probably a little over and he's been riding for Mark Johnston for 20 years probably more. Hes just benefitted more in recent years from the retirement of Dalglish , Darley , Weaver and Fairley

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey? I don't think the top jockeys are too bothered about becoming top jockey now. There is no way they are going to put in the graft of over 1000 rides like Hanagan and SDS did last year. Maybe it should be renamed the most hard working jockey championship as their strike rates are rubbish. I think all of the top jockeys would much rather bag a couple of group 1's than become champion jockey. This is why I think it will be very open this year and could go to an outsider. From the top jockeys I like SDS at 5/1. Godolphin are usually very quiet at the beginning of the season and this will give him chance to bang in plenty of winners up North and for other trainers before the Godolphin runners start coming out in force.

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey? What happened to Buick? The Rat posted something about him getting chinned or something? Will he be out for the start of the season?

Maybe it should be renamed the most hard working jockey championship
A lot of discussion around that on here last season, punters saying Hanagan wasn't a worthy champion but the rules are that it's based on winners ridden rather than prize money earned as in the trainers title so it certainly is the hardest working and most travelled jockey. I'm starting to think Spencer could be a good bet at 33's but I don't know how much desire he has to be champion jockey again. Interesting that he didn't get offered the jobs Hanagan and De Sousa have just got too. He gets a lot of criticism and might want to prove a point and also put himself in the shop window for a big stable.

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey? Buick get chinned at a party thrown for Richard Hills. I am pretty sure he broke his jaw and could be out for the start of the flat season. I think Hanagan was a worthy champion simply because of the amount of work he put into it, but the problem for me is that the Jockey's Championship is not seen as a big thing any-more. The top jockeys would much rather win the big races throughout the season than win the jockeys championship. If you said to any jockey would you rather bang in 150 winners and win the jockeys championship or win the Derby then surely every jockey would say the Derby. Winning the jockeys championship doesn't make you the best jockey but does show your willing to put in more graft than anyone else. If you compare Hanagan to Moore then Hanagan over the course of last season has put in almost 100 more days work than Ryan Moore yet Ryan Moore has won over a million more in prize money. I don't know what can be done to change how the jockey's championship is won but I don't think putting it down to how many winners you get is the answer. I don't think you can put it down to the amount of prize money won either. Maybe they could start a points based system on the class of race that you win. Obviously the higher class race the more points you get. This would keep all the top jocks involved...

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey? I think Fallon could do it this year. Im a massive SDS fan but right now the move to Godolphin could scupper his chances might not but we will see. Agree with other people on here who have said Joe Fanning is underated Id also add Neil Callan to that list one of my fave jocks but doesn't get enough recognition imo.

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey?

Come on its EASY' date= Flip a coin, Tails - Moore, Heads Hanagan. Job done.
have to dissagree,Hanagan over last couple of years has milked up everything up north, that will not happen this year as its fair to say he will have to ride far more down south where the competion is far more fierce and the likelyhood of him being able to mop up down there being something of a longshot IMHO..... as for misery gutts moore,a lot depends on if AIDAN O BRIAN wants him to ride all over EUROPE chasing all the group 1 winners, and therefore neglect some domestic winners, and furthermore should STOUTY's stable continue to be bang out of form that will not help his quest to be TOP DOG either... still a little too early to tell who is gonna be the man back for TOP JOCK as far as i'm concerned

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey?

as for misery gutts moore' date='a lot depends on if AIDAN O BRIAN wants him to ride all over EUROPE chasing all the group 1 winners, and therefore neglect some domestic winners[/quote'] Clearly this is not going to be the case, barriing injury to JP O'Brien, who has ridden 38 of the stable's 56 runners so far this year in Ireland. In contrast Ryan Moore has only had one ride in Ireland, and that was on Twirl on the opening day of the season. I think the only reason Moore was on Twirl that day was because JP O'Brien can't do 8-9!

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey? Imho Silvestre De Sousa has to be the favourite. Yes he will have to skip some mounts because of his commitments for Godolphin but I can see him still able to ride everywhere as much as he can getting always good rides (that was already the case in these first few weeks) while his main rival over the last season (Hanagan) will surely be not able to do so. Can't see Moore riding so many winners especially with Stoute's stable still far from their old glorious standards. Buick could be a surprise but probably not enough to win the title.

Re: Flat Jockeys Championship 2012 - Who will be top jockey? I'm still a fan of Buick at the 16s on offer. Will bang in a number of winners for Gosden, and I can see him willing to go all out for it when it comes down a fight at the end of the season. Doubts about so many of the others, although a saver on Fallon might not be a bad shout. Class jockey - just a case of whether he gets the ammunition.
