Tennis 8th-15th Jan

Recommended Posts

Just thought I would start a new thread for the coming weeks tournaments in Sydney/ Hobart/. I will keep this brief with just a couple of outright bets that caught my eye, Sydney Mens tournament winner Marcel Granollers @ 50/1 on Betfair Also Sergiy Stakhovsky @ 75/1 on Betfair Hobart womens winner Anna Chakvetadze @ 38/1 on Betfair ( I actually bcked this @ 34.0 not 38, just a mistake on my part I only realised this morning when I checked my bet) All one point wins with options to trade I guess, reasoning to follow!

Tennis: 8th-15th January Hi guys, 4 tournaments this pre- Aus Open week: Sydney for both ATP and WTA, Auckland for the ATP and Hobart for the WTA. 1 new pick for me for the WTA HOBART match tomorrow: ERRANI TO DEFEAT LARSSON BY 2:0 SETS @1.53 on ladbrokes The only concern in this match is that Errani could decide to rest before the Australian Open next week otherwise she is a better player in a better form and she had the easiest win over Larsson just last week last week.

Sport Tennis
Event Vera Zvonareva - Svetlana Kuznetsova
Selection Vera Zvonareva
Strength 10/10
Date 09/01/2012
Bookmaker/Price Centrebet @ 1.85
Reasoning In the first round of the WTA Sydney (Australia, hard) we`ll have a pure 100% russian battle with Vera Zvonareva meeting Svetlana Kuznetsova for the 10th time in her career with the score 5-4 in favor of Vera (winning the last 2 in a row, both in straight sets). This in my oppinion will be the best catch, Zvonareva is at he peak, ranking 7th in the world, coming after her best season in her career where she won 2 titles, at Doha and Baku, played 2 other finals and 4 semifinals (not including the semifinal at the Masters Cup lost to Azarenka). Kuznetsova who althoug is 19th in the world hasn`t developed much, finished 2011 with a modest record of 34-21, cosiderably modest for her pretention with the only notable result at the Dubai Open when she played and lost the final against Wozniacki. Unlike Zvonareva who is playing for the first time this year, Kuznetsova is at her 2nd tournament, last time she was in Auckland where she reached the semifinals, surprisingly losing to Zheng in three sets. So without further adieu, I think it`s very clear, Zvonareva is the one who reached a higher level of play, much more consistancy between the two, where we add that they haven`t met for 3 years now, but last time Vera was allready starting her domination over her countrywoman by winning the last two encounters. Like I said, a good catch with Zvonareva today who is the clear favorite in my oppinion.

Re: Tennis: 8th-15th January Raonic came through in the end (no breaks of serve in that one :loon). Here are my selections for today. Surprisingly, I do not like that many, even though the card is huge. Kubot (+2) to beat Dodig @ 1.95 with Pinnacle Well, judging from their performances from last week, I do not see a reason for not having Kubot with this handicap. Ivan Dodig was truly awful in Chennai, while Kubot had a tough match against Seppi and fought well. Neither player is great, etc. and this will probably be a rather poor match, but the value lies with Kubot imo. Gajdosova to beat Morita @ 1.80 with Pinnacle Gajdosova played reasonably well in the Hopman Cup, but the opposition was just too strong. This will be a huge step down in quality and she is the defending champion in Hobart, so she should be able to take some confidence from that. Morita had a nice match with Zheng, but she should not be able to withstand Gajdosova's power unless she is going to get a ton of unforced errors from her. Zvonareva to beat Kuznetsova @ 1.80 with Pinnacle Better player and the odds would have been different if this was not her first match of the season, but I am willing to take the risk and hope that she is alright. Kuznetsova has not made a lasting impression in Auckland and she will be up against a top 10 player here on a reasonably fast surface, so she should have big problems. Marach/Peya to beat Ferrer/Montanes @ 1.83 with William Hill This made me go "Hey what?", so going with my gut instinct. Doubles veterans against guys that probably want to just test out the surface, as they are not playing today, but will probably play tomorrow. Look at their results and F/M duo have not defeated anyone decent in doubles. No reason to think they will here.

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart I got this: 5/10 Giraldo -5.5 games tb Venus @ 2.00 (Titanbet) 5/10 Berlocq - Volandri; 2-0 @ 1.80 (Betsson) 3/10 Giraldo - Venus; 2-0 x Baghdatis tb Tursunov @ 1.85 (Titanbet) 2/10 Stakhovsky -3 games tb Reynolds @ 1.94 (SBO) And an early bet on Haase to beat Bogomolov Jr. but odds are not good anymore.

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart Hobart really is a wide open event this year! I think there's a very good chance that a rank outsider could win this one or at least get to the final. Shahar Peer is the favourite at 6-1 with paddypower. Peer has been struggling with her confidence for the best part of a year now. She's had mediocre results. The last time I saw her play was against sloane stephens at the US open, where she striked the ball well but ultimately choked the match away! I don't think she's ready to find the bottle to win a tournament just yet and anyway doesn't represent the value. Wickmayer is second favourite at 13-2! Superficially at least she seems to be the class act of the field but she's had her own confidence issues..didn't finsih the season off so well and the way she crumbled against sara errani last week doesn't bode well for her. Kerber is 8-1 and she has a chance...at least she's got bottle and confidence...great ball striker, average mover but is probably still a bit over-rated after she more or less reached the US open semis last year by default as her opponents choked away matches to her! 8-1 is about right for me. Mattek-sands is 14-1 and she played some good stuff last week. I still feel like she's lacking some consistency in her game. She's just back from a long lay-off and this tournament might have come too soon but she's one of those players who I'd wait maybe until after she gets a few matches under her belt before I'd back her! Sara Errani is 16-1, she's one of the classier match players in the field but she's not a renowned tournament winner despite being on the tour a long time and I think there are more explosive players that if they found form could take her out! Begu is 16-1, one of the more celebrated youngsters around these days and she could well represent a bit of value at 16-1 as she's already got a wta tourney win under her belt...however, she hasn't proved herself on this surface yet. Cirstea is 18-1 and I saw her against Pennetta last week and Pervak yesterday and she seems to be on good form. In fact, she's striking the ball as well and as consistantly as she has done since probably the run she made to the french open quarters a few years ago...it's a bit early to jump the gun yet but I like 18-1. Pironkova at 20-1 looks like value but I can't see her winning...doesn't have the weight of shot on this surface to really hurt opponents. Defending champion jarmila gajdosova is 22-1 which seems like a massive price. She beat medina last week but was double bageled by bartoli( due to a dental issue apparently). She's one of the more explosive players...didn't finish the season great last year, she did go through a divorse last year and I get the impression her confidence isn't sky high at the moment but if she can somehow get through her tricky first round against morita she might go on a run as I reckon she's one of the beter players here. 22-1 is just too big a price. Vesnina is 25-1, she's another big hitter but is far too inconsistent to trust. Medina and suarez navarro are 20-1 and 28-1, navarro represents more value to me ...when she turns it on she can really mix it with the top players. However, the prices that stand out to me are lucie hradecka at 33-1 and Oprandi at 66-1. Oprandi qualified convincingly, she's striking the ball well and though she doesn't move brilliantly she has a good all court game and won't be out matched on a field like this. Hradecka beat peng last week, she's another inconsistent sort but I reckon she has the best first serve of the whole field and it's just another big price as on her day she can beat anybody here in this field! If anyone has any different thoughts, it would be nice to hear them... I just feel there aren't many opportunities in the year to pick a long odds winner and that this might be one of them. I haven't even mentioned players like halep, watson or voskoboeva who I don't fancy at the moment but they just show that the field is wide open.

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart BobNL: Any reasoning for those bets? smegmaniac: yep I agree, really open event. From the value point-of-view, Hradecka seems like the right pick and I was thinking about backing her, but seeing her performance against Zheng put me off. However, she regained some confidence by winning the doubles title last week, so she might do well. On the other hand, cannot see Oprandi winning. She is not that good really imo, never rated her highly. Otherwise, I was thinking about Gajdosova and that is probably value too. The rest (Kerber, Cirstea, etc.) can win, but the odds are a bit too short in a pick-em contest.

Yeah, Hradecka could barely keep the ball in play against zheng but when she catches fire she is a handful and as you say the doubles win will give her confidence. You're probably right about Oprandi! I don't particularly rate her but beating wozniak and vandewehge in qualifying are decent results and 66-1 just seems like a big price in such an open field! There just seems to be a lot of headcases in the draw... a lot of talented players struggling for form that I've a feeling it could be one of the more ordinary players that comes through. Maybe not oprandi but somebody surprising. I forgot to mention chakvetadze...she looked impressive against niculescu...really using all angles of the court...another headcase but at 16-1 has to be considered value! Haha ...at this rate , I'm recommending half the field!!

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart Okay as promised I will provide reasonong to my selections for the outright winners of the above events. Anna Chakvetadze , when I see how average the field is for this yrs event I like to try to get a big price about a player whom I think has a bit of class. Anna was as high as number 6 in the world back in 2008 and indeed has even won this tourney a yr earlier in 2007. I remember being mystified as to why her form dipped so dramatically from her peak, watching her lose match after match to players she would have previously destroyed. However I feel there was a valid reason for this in that she was the victimm of a savage robbery at her home in Moscow in 2008 and this obviously had a massive traumatic effect on her whole life. Maybe it is just a theory but I really think it has affected her thinking on court, tennis was not on her mind. However I watched with interest as she beat Nicelscu last night in convincing fashion and at nice juicy odds, I then read that she had taken a long break from the tour at the end of last yr and is now hungry to come back. There is no doubt that she has acheived more and than anyone else in the line up for this yrs event and having reached as high as world number 6 she has the class. All this of course may count for nothing if her old demons return but at 34.0 I am willing to give Anna a chance and hope that she is coming back to us in her old devestating form in 2012.

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart

BobNL: Any reasoning for those bets?
Here they are again, now with reasoning. ;) 5/10 Giraldo -5.5 games tb Venus @ 2.00 (Titanbet) Giraldo did well last week in Brisbane, beating Millman and Petzschner in straight sets where he holded his serve well. Then in the QF he lost to Simon with 4-6 6-7, that is not very bad. In the first round in Auckland he will face a local, Michael Venus, ranked 379 who came here because of a wild-card. He plays future and challenger tournaments but without having spectacular results. I see no problems here for Giraldo to win this match in 6-3 6-3 or better. 5/10 Berlocq - Volandri; 2-0 @ 1.80 (Betsson) This is a match between two clay court specialists but Berlocq is the better hard court player. Last year on hard court he won sometimes some first round matches or took a set against a better player. This in comparison to Volandri who had not any chance in his hard court matches last season. Volandri played 10 sets and lost all of them. I see Berlocq winning here as he is the better overall player. The H2H (clay only) is 3-0 in favor of Berlocq where Berlocq won all these matches very easily. 3/10 Giraldo - Venus; 2-0 x Baghdatis tb Tursunov @ 1.85 (Titanbet) Giraldo I already covered and Baghdatis is the other play. This is not very hard for me, Baghdatis did well beating Harrison and Nishikori in straight sets before losing to a good Andy Murray. Tursunov lost to Albert Ramos, not a good player. I expect Baghdatis to win here but the price is not that high so that's why I put him in a bet together with Giraldo who I can't see dropping a set. 2/10 Stakhovsky -3 games tb Reynolds @ 1.94 (SBO) Small play here on Stakhovsky against Bobby Reynolds. Stakhovsky lost in three sets against Karlovic but he got some match points if I am right. Reynolds is a challenger tournament player and had not won a match last season on the ATP tour. Stakhovsky is a much more experienced play on these tournaments and had some wins last season. I think Stakhovsky will win this match and when he does, this line is not very hard to cover. But it is a small bet because Stakhovsky is not very consistent. I am of course still learning and not a very experienced write-up writer so comments will be appreciated.

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart Marcel Granollers, 50/1 Betfair. I like this guy, he is dam hard to break and having won his third title last year in such a high quality event as Valencia defeating Monaco in the final, I reckon his confidence has sky-rocketed, not maybe his best surface but again its a big price and one which is quite tradeable if he gets through a few early rnds.

Can I ask where you got that price of 38-1?? You are right!! that price is massive! Niculescu was a bit out of sorts....but anna was stroking the ball beautifully around the court! Anna still has the class if she can avoid a meltdown and stay mentally focused,I wouldn't be surprised to see her at least reach the final! In fact, I've decided that she and hradecka are my picks!

What go you people think about Granollers to beat Ebden ods are good for Granollers win 2.00bet365 only one thing puts me off is his first match of the season
Well the odds are nice, but the two factors that are putting me off is that indeed it is the first match of the season for him and that he would like a slower court (the courts in Valencia are much slower than this one, unless they changed the surface from last year)

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart My main tip for tomorrow and one I will be hitting hard ; - 7/10 Muller - Mayer : Muller @ 2.34 (Pinnacle) This is a match between two players who had good years last year, both with big serves, more so Muller, and I think his better serve will pay dividends on a fast court. They have never played each other but Muller has much more experience on the hard stuff and run Andy Murray very close last week in Brisbane and we saw how well Murray was playing. I don't expect many breaks of serve and could easily finish 7-6, 7-6. Mayer has only played once in 2012 and that was last week in Brisbane when he retired after losing the 1st set to Denis Istomin with a groin injury and this might affect his ability to play a long game. Pinnacle pay out if the match completes the 1st set so might be better backing with Unibet (2.08) or Bwin (2.10) who pay out on who goes through in the event of retirement. But in any event I expect Muller to reach the 2nd round.

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart i like an upset against Jankovits.Goerges has beaten up Wozniaki in Madrit and Studgart and although it was on clay this means this girl has the potential.the odds for her win is about 3 and it doesnt seem fair to me. their h2h in hard is 1-1. so... J. Jankovic vs J. Goerges (+4) @ 2,16 pinnacle (4/10)

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart

Tennis
Event Kubot - Dodig
Selection Kubot
Strength 10/10
Date 09/01/2012
Bookmaker/Price Unibet @ 2.28
Reasoning I see really good value in this odds. Kubot have better career balance on hard courts, especially better live time record on Ocenia tournaments. Kubot in past beat Dodig in three sets in Sarajevo. Kubot defending round of 16 from last year here, huge motivation. Dodig looked terrible in last weekend at Chennai courts
Tennis
Event Mayer - Muller
Selection Mayer -1.5 sets (Asian-handicap)
Strength 10/10
Date 09/01/2012
Bookmaker/Price Pinnacle Sports @ 2.63
Reasoning In my opinion Florian Mayer have very good chances to win this match in two sets. Florian is better player than Muller, no doubts in that. Here have really good motivation, defending semifinal points from last year. Muller not defending any points here, and this is the bigges reason for my bet, before Australian Open. Muller 2-0 or without win here hehe.
Tennis
Event Larsson - Errani
Selection Larsson +1.5 sets (Asian-handicap)
Strength 10/10
Date 09/01/2012
Bookmaker/Price Pinnacle Sports @ 3.22
Reasoning Huge value in this odds. Larsson is 59 player on the world and for sure have potential to be TOP40 or something like that. Have good weapons for hard courts - forehand and strong serve. Errani in last weekend won 6-1, 6-1 against her, but this is WTA and I can't trust for 1.15 odds, really. Errani is only 13 position higher in rank.

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart Had a bit of time to watch some tennis now to see the shape of some players and happy to get involved in tonight's action. Having 6 in total, mainly focusing on the women which is where my preferences lie tonight ;) Bethanie Mattek-Sands (-5.5 games) to beat Ashleigh Barty- Evens Bet365- (4/10) Was expecting either a higher line or a much much lower price so this handicap I really like for the American. She missed virtually all of the American hard court season last year Mattek-Sands and her last match before the Hopman Cup came at the US open so there may be a valid argument against the American due to her lack of match practice but that doesn't put me off her here. She pushed Wozniacki close in the first set last week and then beat Pironkova, which should have done her confidence the world of good. Ashleigh Barty is just 15 years of age and in my eyes a little out of her depth here. She was hammered by Vania King last week in Brisbane, only winning 3 games in the match and I don't see her winning many more, if any in this one. Mattek-Sands reached the final in Hobart last year so is defending quite a few ranking points so she should be well up for it, and she should win this with a fair bit to spare. Galina Voskoboeva (-4.5 games) to beat Casey Dellacqua- 5/6 Bet365- (3/10) Voskoboeva had a really good season last year on the hard courts and she'll be hoping to carry that impressive form into 2012. She beat the likes of Bartoli, Sharapova and Kirilenko amongst others last year on the hard courts and if she plays like she did last year, she should be too much for the Australian here. I backed Jovanovski to beat Dellacqua last week in Australia, and once the Serb got going, she eased to victory. Dellacqua played a lot of challengers in Australia last year against really low ranked players and she really doesn't fare that well against the players in the top 100. Voskoboeva did okay last week, double bagelling Dushevina, before being competitive against Schiavone. Both of those players are better than Dellacqua so happy to back the girl from Kazakhstan on the handicap here. Polona Hercog vs Marion Bartoli- Under 19.5 games- 5/6 Bet365- (3/10) Backing the unders rather than the handicap on Bartoli here as it's at a slightly better price. Think both will come through alright as Bartoli shouldn't have too many problems in this one. She won 2/4 matches in the Hopman Cup, and the two girls she beat are arguably better than Hercog, especially in the form she has showed early on this season. In Brisbane she had to retire in the second set against Pavlyuchenkova, and then lost in qualifiers to Makarova for the tournament here in Sydney so she is here only because of a lucky loser spot. Makarova hammered her 6-1 6-3 though so whether Hercog just didn't play well or whether her fitness isn't quite there I'm not sure but you'd expect Bartoli to have little problems in taking care of her so unders for me here. Johanna Larsson vs Sara Errani- Under 19.5 games- 5/6 Bet365- (3/10) Exactly the same bet as I've taken in the Bartoli-Hercog match and I don't get why this line is so high. The handicap on offer would suggest the line should be a couple of games lower so I'm happy to jump on the unders. Errani beat Larsson 6-1 6-1 just last week in Auckland and in the only other meeting before that in Mexico last year, Errani won 6-2 6-4 so it suggests this line is simply too high. There's not actually a lot between the two players in terms of the rankings but that is mainly due to Errani really struggling at the back end of last year. She is the better player though and beat Wickmayer last week so with that win and the demolition job she did on Larsson, she should be full on confidence to win this one easily as well. Alexandra Dulgheru vs Sofia Arvidsson- Tie Break in Match- 9/4 Bet365- (2/10) Don't think I have ever taken this tie break bet in a women's match before as there are usually more breaks of serves than holds but feel it is worth a small punt in this one. These two girls played just a day or so ago in qualification for Sydney, and it went to 3 sets, with the score 6-7 7-6 7-5 in Arvidsson's favour which suggest it was an extremely close affair and to see this amount of games in a WTA match is unusual to say the least. I like the tie break market here further though because in their only other meeting before the other day, at the US open a couple of years back, there was a tie break in that one as well so stats are on our side for this bet, and at over 2/1, think it is worth a shot. Also having one for the men which has already been mentioned. Gilles Muller to beat Florian Mayer- 11/10 Bet365- (3/10) Taking this bet mainly because I'm not sure what the state of Mayer's groin is. He was forced to retire against Istomin in Brisbane and whether he will be 100% for this one is dubious. If he is carrying a slight niggle, Muller isn't the kind of guy you want to be playing. You won't get many chances on his serve as Murray found out last week and you need to be quick on your feet to return as many balls as possible. If the German's groin is hampering him, I'm not sure whether he will be able to do that and Muller is no mug, so happy to back him as the slight underdog here.

Sport Tennis
Event Kuznetsova - Zvonareva
Selection Over 21.5
Strength 10/10
Date 09/01/2012
Bookmaker/Price Pinnacle Sports @ 2.04
Reasoning Two Russian players on the court, two really experience players with many titles. Kuznetsova in last weekend show very good stuff on the courts, lost in semifinal against title winner Jie Zheng in three sets. Serving very good. For Zvonareva this is first match in new season, but of course Zvonareva is fantastic player, TOP10 on the world. Over look nice for me

Event Pironkova T.- Watson Heather
Selection Pironkova T.
Strength 10/10
Date 09/01/2012
Bookmaker/Price Sportingbet @ 1.83
Reasoning Pironkova will face youngster British hope Watson Heather at Hobart, Australia. These two played twice in 2010, Pironkova won the first one in straight sets 6-4 6-2 in Maimi Masters tournament but few months later on a grass in Eastbourne Wastson Heather stopped Pironkova in three sets. However few weeks later in the same year Pironkova recorded her best success in WTA tournaments reaching the semi-final at Wimbledon taking hot Venus Williams through her way. On the other hand Watson Heather played qualification here in Hobart she played three matches two of them three -setters, while at the same time Pironkova face world number 2 Kvitova loss in straight sets but playing well, and world number 1 Wozniacki taking one set lost another 7-5, and failed 2-1 sets, that was past week at Hopman Cup where her country finished on the third place behind Czech Republic and France. As far as I watched Pironkova she has big serving good percentage of 1st service and very good backhand. Pironkova struggle when should use her forehand but I think she took good experience against world number 1 and 2 few days.

Event Ebden M. - Granollers-Pujol M.
Selection Granollers-Pujol M.
Strength 10/10
Date 09/01/2012
Bookmaker/Price Pinnacle Sports @ 2.04
Reasoning These two never played before the series in tied 0-0 between. Ebden has the crowd with him sitting on the 86th place at ATP ranking, while Granollers -Pujol sits on the 27th place. Ebden lost five of last six matches who played against not so strong players like Ungur, Dancevic, Stepane, Nieminen. On the other hand Grannollers-Pujol showed incredible tennis at the end of last year on this kind of surface hardcourt he defeat in a row Dolgopolov 2-0, Cilic 2-1, Monfils 2-1, Del Potro 2-0, Monaco 2-1 to win Valencia tournament. That was big success for Grannolers-Pujol he played against strong rivals who are of top 20 in ATP rankings even top 10 players. If Grannollers-Pujol keep that fit he will take this match very easy.

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart Hello, i see i wasn't the only one to bet against Dodig. Big idiot, in the second set he won his first three service games to love, eventually managed to break and was immediately broken back by Kubot who eventually won the set. For tomorrow i saw another interesting match between two americans Sam Querrey and Ryan Harrison. Put my money on the youngster Harrison, i still managed to get him when his odd was 2, in the meantime i see it dropped a bit. There really isn't much to say here, Ryan is clearly the better and more talented player of the two, Querrey is one of those players without any visible talents for the game, to me he seems the american version of Kolschreiber: can serve well and sometimes defeat better players but a guy with not too many weapons in his bag. Sam was defeated by Hanescu in his opening match of the year, Hanescu played very good but still an inexcusable defeat for the american to be beaten by Victor on a hard surface. Ryan on the other hand had a good showing against Baghdatis losing in to sets against one of the eventual finalists of the tournament but he was competitive enough. The only big problem Ryan has are his weak nerves and inconsistancy, he really should have finished last year much higher than he did, i see him as one of the best youngsters on the tour who is capable of great tennis. Clearly the better player in my book i think he has a good chance of defeating Sam tomorrow

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart Hi guys, 2 new picks for the WTA SYDNEY tomorrow: RADWANSKA TO DEFEAT PETKOVIC @1.65 on pinnaclesports AZARENKA TO DEFEAT JANKOVIC @1.45 on bwin Good match-up for a very consistent Radwanska who traditionally plays well in Sydney. Great 1st round for Radwanska today. Azarenka is simply a better player those days, has the same consistency as Jankovic but just much more power, particularly on a backhand side.

Re: Tennis 8th-15th Jan Sydney/ Hobart Well, 2-1 so far with Zvonareva losing, but Cibulkova and Kubot winning. Still, the two other matches are in great position right now (rain break again). Gajdosova is 6-3 *5-3 up against Morita and Marach/Peya lead 6-2 5-2*, so you would expect them winning in the end.
