I like to look for favourites in small field races that I think won't win ....... the reasoning being that favourites are more likely to be overbet in small fields because they only have 3, 4 or 5 rivals and the betting public think 'surely he'll win that, he's only got to beat 3 of them'
So if you can identify a false favourite the other horses might be good value ...... of course you still have to find one to beat the favourite and win
I guess you could say that it's the same as looking for a false favourite in a 16 runner race ....... but even if you identify one you've still got 15 others that might win !

Nott 3.25
We have a horse here, Isle of Dreams, going for a 6 timer and is not surprisingly pretty short odds and odds on with some firms
But I fancy taking it on with Rainbow Mirage
The two horses approach the race from different directions, the Favourite is up from class 6 and going up in the weights and my selection is down from class 4 and going down in the weights
At some point their paths will cross ...... and it could just be today !
Rainbow Mirage - win at 13/2 bet365

Trotter got a reaction from BBBC in Epsom Derby - Saturday June 3rd
I suppose there was always some doubt with that the Cup Final might go to extra time, penalties, then you've got all the presentations and post-race interviews and chat .... it could have gone on until well after 6pm so it would be tricky to schedule the Derby not knowing what time the football might finish ..........
I guess it was just safer and more certain to put it on before the match ....... and that meant more than an hour before 3pm because ITV wanted to get on with the match 'build up'

I suspect that with the protests we're going to get so fed up waiting for the race that it'll just be a damp squib (not squid!...... 😉)

Trotter got a reaction from BBBC in Straight or Bends
Defintely I think some horses are better on straight tracks and some are better going round left hand bends than right hand bends and vice-versa
As I mainly look at all weather racing the introduction of Newcastle threw a bit of a spanner in the works with all races up to a mile run on a straight track ......... previously there'd only been the 5 furlongs at Southwell that was straight
Logically a straight track should put more emphasis on stamina as the horses are likely to be able to run faster than running round a bend. It should also suit horses that are held up as the front runners are more likely to be running faster and run out of steam
On the other hand, as Isaac Newton explained very well, you have to accelerate to change direction so running round a bend should need more effort than running in a straight line.
To complicate matters the pace of the race is probably as important in determining the outcome and which horses are best suited ....... obviously on a straight or turning track a slowly run race will suit horses with a capacity to quicken up in the finish and the front runners might not fade if they've been able to run slowly for most of the race and stay ahead
So thinking about this in terms of trying to find a winner of a particular race is not straightforward
I think the best thing to do is to really learn the tracks so you can just look at a horse's form and see instantly which type of track it does best on and which tracks are similar to each other .......
