  1. Noticed that the 2 year old race at Bath today was 'Restricted to Horses in Band D'

I've had a look at what this means and it seems that the BHA have redesigned 2 year old maiden and novice races by implementing a 5 Band rating for races ....... and entry to each Band is restricted by the Auction value of the horse or the Median Auction value of the sire's progeny for horses not sold at public auction

The top band is Open ...... ie no restriction on entries

Then you have Bands A, B, C, D with descending value of horse

Horses who run above their sales band value get a weight allowance

The idea is to provide races which are only open to cheap horses so they don't have have to come up against a Frankel in a run of the mill maiden or novice race ..... and give such horses a better chance of winning a race

  2. Any old timers here who remember this Easter meeting at Kempton before the track was dug up for AW racing ?

It used to be a big deal ........ the season started with Doncaster, then Kempton, then the Craven and Greenham meetings at Newmarket and Newbury ..... and then the Guineas

Doncaster was a bit of a false start to the Flat because attention turned immediately to the Grand National and there was no significant flat racing for two weeks so by the time Kempton came around it seemed like the proper start of the Flat season

At Kempton we had the Masaka and the Easter Stakes which were mile races for 3 year old fillies and colts and were the first Guineas trials though I don't think any horse in my time would have gone on to win the Guineas ........ they just seemed important because you were raring to go and they came along first. And a couple of big handicaps ........ the Queens Prize and the Rosebery

You'd get your 50p Yankee or L15 on the four big races ......

Aah .......... the good old days ........ ?

7 meetings if you include Cork and Fairyhouse for Easter Saturday with a mix of both codes and a AW fixture aswell to keep everyone interested someway or the other and even a NH CHASE!!! due off at 1800 (first of the year i believe)

Bit confused by this ....... do you mean the 6pm at Newton Abbot ?

    Isn't it just a regular handicap chase ? ........ ?

First race up is a 2 year old contest at Newcaste 1.40

Favourite is Cashew at 6/4 but might be worth opposing as the trainer has said she's a speedy sort ....... and even 5f at newcastle on the straight track might be a bit of a test for early 2 year ols, especially fillies

So I'll go with Mark Johnston's horse, Liv Lucky at 6/1

Oh well .. my one didn't win but at least I identified a false favourite which is part of the battle of making a profit !
