  1. Re: Best Bet Of The Day ~ Feb 1st 1.20 Southwell - West End Lad - win Won over CD last time with the field fairly well spread out behind him. He's now up in class and up in the weights, which isn't an ideal profile, but although the last race was a class 6 and this is a class 5, there's not much between the two races. Will have to produce another career best after last time but looks to be on the upgrade. Six years old, but relatively lightly raced as he didn't start running till he was 4

  2. Re: Wolverhampton (eve) 30/1/09 I've had a day off from the racing today, but wanted to pick something for BBotD, so I've plumped for.......... Wolv 9.20 - Mozadaya - Win Worth taking a chance on this one at a big price. Big price reflects the fact that all her recent wins have been at Southwell where she's won 5 out of 7 races since November. Her only 2 defeats coming when stepped up to class 2 company. During that run she's risen in the handicap from 45 to 84 tonight. She's only run on polytrack once and finished last, but then she regularly finished last or got well thrashed on all sufaces until last November. It may be that she's a Southwell horse pure and simple and won't act on the track tonight. But at around 9/1 in a six runner race it's worth chancing that her improvement will carry over to other surfaces.

  4. Re: Wolverhampton (eve) 29/1/09 8.50 I've put up 'Turn To Dreams' in BBotD on the basis that she should get a soft lead in this 5 runner race and ran well under similar circumstances a few days ago when 2nd to Fantastic Fred over todays CD. Comon Diva looks really well in on handicap terms having won off 63 last time out and getting 9lbs off Hold The Bucks, who's won off 67. But then my selection 'should' beat Hold The Bucks on a strict weight for lengths reading of their 1st and 2nd here on 2nd January...........

  5. Re: Best Bet of the Day-29/1/09 Wolv 8.50 - Turn To Dreams - win Strictly on the 'official figures' this one should have no chance in this claimer. But with a 5 runner field and this filly being the only front runner, she just might get a soft lead and be able to strike for home off the last bend and steal the race. Those tactics almost worked in a handicap over CD a few days ago when she was caught on the line by an improving and seemingly well-handicapped type in Fantastic Fred. That was probably the best run of her career and Catherine Gannon takes the ride again tonight. Should go off at pretty big odds and I'm bottom of the table and need a big winner.................:unsure

  6. Re: Southwell 29/1/09 3.20 Calculating - EW This horse has dropped down the weights a lot in the last year. Last March he was winning a class 2 handicap off 83 and here he is today running off 68. He had a poor summer on the turf and two bad runs on polytrack when he came back to the all weather. Then he had 2 decent runs when turning up at Southwell in December, a 2nd and a 3rd, followed by a couple of poorer runs at Kempton. Last time out at Kempton he caught the eye, running nicely, travelling well, made late headway without being hard ridden. Well handicapped, likes the track, could be running into form.......... Good EW shout !

  7. Re: Southwell 29/1/09 2.50 - Coral Shores - EW 9 runner handicap, pretty open event with 9/2 co-favourites as I type this. I've got a shortlist of 3...... Opera Writer - topweight, down in class and down in the weights, has a course win to his name. Minus points - not in great form, course win was some time ago, despite drop in weights he still needs a career best to win and he's 6 years old with 48 runs. Difficult to see him as an improver. Trans Sonic - showed improved form when stepped up in trip here last time. Handles the track. Minus points - that good run last time was when dropped in class to class 6, back to class 5 today, and he had an uncontested lead, which seems unlikely today. Coral Shores - has never won here but has been second 4 times, so handles the track, ran OK here over an inadequate trip 2 runs ago, although she finished last was only beaten around 4L by a decent type in Mozadaya. Then went to Lingfield and was noted running on nicely without being given a hard time in a 10F handicap. Minus points - needs a career best and doesn't win very often. With Opera Writer and Trans Sonic currently 9/2 co-faves and Coral Shores at 10/1, I'll go EW on Coral Shores............

  8. Re: Best Bet of the Day-28/1/09 2.40 Lingfield - Hucking Hero - win Dual CD winner, has now dropped in the weights back below his last winning mark With a couple of front runners in the field this could be run at a fast pace and Hucking Hero has run creditably over 10F last time. As a hold up horse he should be able to lie up behind the pace and pounce when the leaders begin to tire Main danger appears to be Ocean Legend, I'd pick him if he had any Lingfield form, but he doesn't. If he takes to the track I think he'll probably win. Likely favourite is the lightly raced L'Hirondelle. Both his decent runs have been at Kempton and on his only run at Lingfield he couldn't handle the left hand bend, running wide. He might just be a horse that has a 'direction preference' The other well backed one is Torch Of Freedom - don't fancy this one. The Prescott yard has been sending out a few lately having their first runs since the summer and they've all disappointed

  10. Re: Southwell 27/1/09 Well done on the two winners, Fintron.............:ok Although I didn't pick any winners in the five handicaps, I thought all the results were fairly predictable, no big shocks............ Maybe the form at Southwell is coming back to normal after that spell of unusual results ? They had a couple of weeks where the cold weather had changed the surface, made it 'softer' because of the deeper harrowing to turn out the frost.............maybe that was the cause of 'freak' results ?

  11. Re: Southwell 27/1/09 4.10 - Mrs Bun Can't see beyond the favourite here. Mrs Bun, CD winner, going for a hat-trick, Spencer up. Several of the others have no worthwhile Southwell form and the second favourite, My Mentor, hasn't run for 5 months and Prescott isn't in terrific form. They're the only 2 with course wins to their names.

  12. Re: Best Bet of the Day - 27/01/09 3.10 Southwell - City For Conquest - win Won here over CD in November - that's 3 runs ago. Had a couple of poor results since but with 'excuses', tried over 7 furlongs for the first time, and hampered at start last time out. Back over it's winning CD, should have a better chance today. It appears to be the only 'hold up' horse in the field, so a decent pace would certainly help. This could just be an easy race with only 6 runners and several of them having no worthwhile form at the track. Effisio Princess looks the main danger but it was harshly treated for it's last win, put up 8lbs, and has been beaten twice since off it's new mark. Silk Gallery has a first handicap run and might be well in on some of her maiden form, but she has been beaten more than 4 lengths in all her races.

  14. Re: Southwell 27/1/09 The first 2 races on the card are amateur riders handicaps over 14F, featuring a lot of slow horses, hurdlers and what appear to be family pets............... Probably best to just leave them alone, but might as well have a stab.........:eek 12.40 - Zaffeu looks to have a decent chance, topweight, CD winner, 3rd run back after a break, ran pretty well last time 1.10 - I fancy an EW on a big outsider, Bulberrry Hill. He usually runs well here with 4 wins and 5 places, might be better over 2 miles but the amateurs might go hell for leather and it's a big field, so there should be some pace on. His trainer, R W Price, has only had 4 runners this season, but he's had a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd from those 4. Bulberry Hill comes here fresh from a break, his trainer can get get them ready first time out. On the down side the horse hasn't won for 2 years - I've just got a hunch it might go well today, based on the trainers recent record.

  15. Re: Southwell 27/1/09 2.10 - Fulford - win Has a lot going for it today. It's a CD winner, down in class, down in the weights and having it's second run back after a break. Back down to it's last winning mark of 55. Last time was it's first run for 4 months and although it was well beaten, it was steamed into from 20/1 down to 13/2. There's a few front runners in the race which could set it up for a hold up horse like Fulford, although that will also suit the favourite, Jordi Roper

  16. Re: Wolverhampton 26/1/09

17.40 - Bluebell Ridge - win Don't fancy the favourite here, Little Carmela - up in class, up in the weights, down in trip and on a tighter track, can't see her reproducing her Great Leighs win from last time out. Already drifting, might well lose favouritism before the 'off'. There is only one CD winner in the field, Gamesters Lady, but she hasn't run for 221 days and as far as I can tell the trainer has no record of getting them ready first time out. Brave Mave, Karmest and Eureka Moment all look like Southwell horses. Mildoura is a French horse who's never run in the UK, could be anything but the trainer looks out of form That leaves Bluebell Ridge, who's won over this trip twice at Kempton, has run OK here at a longer trip but should be better back at 12F. In a race where none of them stand out, she looks to have a decent chance.
Woo hoo............ends the day with a 9/2 winner. Good days racing...............:lol:lol
  17. Re: Wolverhampton 26/1/09

Typical. I read the text commentary on the RP and they said SK wasn't settled.
The reason he wasn't settled is that the riderless horse was taking him on for the lead and he was chasing it !..........despite the jockey trying to hold him back ! I'd just discount this race.........I'm sure he'd have won easily if it hadn't been for that incident. He only slowed down in the last 50 yds, I'm sure he would have run all the way to the line if he hadn't wasted that energy in the first half of the race.
