  1. Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread Just dipping in and out of the evening racing on RUK and caught Stewart Machin (I think) complaining about the dozens of non runners at Newmarket tonight. He appeared to be saying that it was connected to Jessie J being in concert after racing He mentionned that she was appearing at Newbury tomorrow and expected lots of non runners there For the life of me I can't figure out what he was getting at ? How would the number of non runners be connected in any way to who was appearing in concert after racing ? Was he suggesting that owners entered their horses to get owners passes and had no intention of running ?...............or that horses were being withdrawn because there was a big crowd ? I've only become aware of Miss J in the last few days because of the Closing Ceremony and I was rather smitten with her so I'd hate to think she was the cause of mass non runner defections.............:loon ps......Thommo was back commentating................:)

Re: sun bbotd Deau 2.40 - Elusive Kate - win at 10/1 bog wm hill Champion 2yo filly in France last year after winning the Marcel Boussac has come back this year and finished a hd 2nd in the Falmouth on debut before winnijng the Rothschild last time out Obviously a top group one filly and with the early season 3yo form not looking great the fact that she missed all those races jumps her up to the top of the 3yo rankings Doubts about other main contenders Excelebration - has he got used to losing ? Moonlight Cloud - best horse in race but will she get trip ? Most Improved - 3yo form up to Royal Ascot not great Golden Lilac - wants further ? maybe best fresh Fallen for You - 3yo form up to Royal Ascot not great Cityscape - is he up to top European group one standard ? Immortal Verse - might need another run, best soft ground Tin Horse - needs further Caspar netscher - not good enough Indomito - not good enough

  4. Re: A little help understanding racing terms The 7 is his age..............he's 7 years old carrying 9-9 the '77' is his official rating the '29' just under his name is the days since he last ran I assume you're still looking at the Racing Post ?............if so the '33' by the btrainers name is the racing post's own trainnerform rating showing that 33% of his recent runners are running up to around their form level The TS and RPR figues near the end of the column are racing post speed and form ratings ther figures that appear in that same race but not on Aye Aye Digby.......... top horse Avonmore Star..the jockey has a '7' after his name - that denotes that he's a young jockey and hasn't ridden a certain number of winners and is allowed to carry 7lb less than the allotted weight. So the horse has been assessed to carry 9-12 but with this jockey riding he will actually carry 9-5 Peter island has '6ex' after his name - he's carrying a 6lb penalty for having won yesterday, ie before the handicapper has had chance to reassess him (actually he's a non runner) Billion Dollar Kid has 288 (241J) in the days since last run column- that means 288 ndays since running in a flat race and 241 days since running in a Jumps race - they only print this if the run under the other code to today was since the last run under this code What else.............. A little b1 after Dasho's name.............he#]s wearing blinkers and it's the 1st time he's worn them I think that's all the numbers on the racecard !

  5. Re: A little help understanding racing terms The weight can have 3 digits.........eg 9-13 would be 9 stones 13 pounds 6ex would appear by the horse's name and means the horse is carrying an additional 6 lbs 'penalty' for have won a race too recently to have been re-assessed by the handicapper A form figure in bold means that that race was on the all weather tracks

  6. Re: Flat Racing Friday 10th of August Bit of a shocker for me today..........I'm chasing............. I've not been betting much, in fact at all, for a few months but I had a fiver on something a couple of days ago and it lost............. Now I've seen a sure fire way to get my fiver back...............:p Ling 5.20 - Bowdlers magic -10 to win at 1/2 SJ Only 4 runners here and Johnstons's horse is in form having won last time out - not just won but won a handicap by 9 lengths eased down. Hcapper is putting him up to 85 from tomorrow but he gets to run here off 81 under his penalty Handles the track as he's finished 3rd here in the past in a class 3 - this is a class 5 Hopefully there'll be no more non runners so no Rule 4..............and my horse will win very, very easily........... Could be famous last words but this looks a dead cert banker to get my money back........:unsure What could possibly go wrong...................

  7. Re: BBOTD Thursday 9th of August Leop 7.30 - Blue Corner - EW at 25/1 bog bet365 Group race action on a Thursday night Bit nervous going for an EW with 8 runners, there's bound to be a non runner. But I think my chap has a chance of winning or being 2nd wether there's 7 or 8 runners He's only had two runs - won a maiden very easily looking like a group horse, then ran 2nd in a stakes race on soft ground which didn't apear to suit The ground is better today and he steps up in trip which should help. I suppose basically he's the lightly raced potential improver against some horses who are around group 3 class but probably no better Treasure Beach won a poor Irish Derby last year and often runs in top races but is finding it difficult to win. Ease in grade should give him a chance but you always feel that his style of running sets it up for someone to run past him in the finish. He's got the best form. Light Heavy looks good.....I was originally going to pick him as a win bet but maybe as it turned out the form of his early season pattern race wins doesn't look so great now There's a few hurdlers running who are quite capable of group race form on the flat

  8. Re: BBOTD Monday 6th August Kemp 3.30 - Peponi - EW at 16/1 bog bet365 Still a maiden after 14 runs but has a decent record over this CD with a 2nd, 3rd and 4th from his 3 runs Has been falling in the weights and today gets to run in a 0-70 for the first time. has the first time blinkers on and a good low draw. Darryl Holland rides him for the first time and I think he has the reputation of being a good front runner jock, knows his pace etc, so i wonder if they have a plan to jump out and see if the blinkersd make the difference ! Unfortunately the overnight favourite is a non runner which has scuppered the odds I was hoping to get.............:@

  9. Re: bbotd 5/8/12 I'm am so pee'd off at that...............there was nothing visible in the replay, the boys on ATR were saying it might be something like a jockey weighing in light............. 30 minutes after the race and my huge price 3rd is placed 4th Honestly, sometimes you just think 'sod it, I give up'..................:wall:@

  10. Re: bbotd 5/8/12

Cor' date=' Well in trotter just logged on now to notice yer with a 50/1 3rd. I ain't watched any racing so can't comment but well done.:nana[/quote'] cheers..........but I've just seen that my horse has been placed 4th after a stewards I don't believe it......................:wall
  11. Re: bbotd 5/8/12 Deau 2.40 - American Devil - ew at 50/1 bog bet365 Group one action at Deauville this afternoon and I'm taking a chance on one of the outsiders Three year old colt who ran well a couple of times last season, most notably when beaten under 2 lengths by Dabirsim in the Jean-Luc Lagardiere (i think that's the race that we all know as the Gran Criterium ?) on Arc week-end made his debut this season in what turned out to be a really hot edition of the Prix Guiche, running well for a long way before fading. That was over 9 furlongs Dropped back to 7 furlongs last time and again ran well behind Mashoora Third run of the season today, acts on the soft ground, looks a group class animal, gets weight from the older horses............worth a chance at big odds I'm guessing they had in mind a 10 furlong campaign for him this season but changed plans after he appeared not to stay in that 9 furlong race...........lets hope they're right to bring him back to sprint trips. There must be plenty of mile races if they'd decided to go that route

  12. Re: BBOTD Saturday 4th of August Good 3.15 - Clinical - EW at 28/1 bog betvictor Has a tough task here in a group one but is stepping up in trip against horses mainly stepping down in trip and she has a decent turn of foot which might come into play if it's a slow run race as these group races often are Goes well at Epsom so the track should be ok............ground was against her in the group 2 at Royal Ascot but she'd previously beaten the winner of that at Epsom the time before She's probably not that far behind the genuine group one horses, about 8lbs according to RPR, and the race might just be run to suit her

  13. Re: Frankel Tomorrow Just for interest............ I've been doing some speed ratings for the main turf festivals this year and I've got Frankel still improving........his run at Goodwood was faster on the ratings than his win at Royal Ascot, even tho' the latter was visually much more impressive

  14. Re: Confused but happy I've been doing the same thing for several months Not sure what happened but about 6 months ago I just got fed up of my usual thorough form study methods and just stopped Since then I've been picking horses by a brief glance through the card, checking the RPR, betting odds, trainer RTF and just drawing upon my inbuilt stock of knowledge built up over the last few years Unlike you though, I'm not doing that well In the past when i've had periods of picking horses by flair rather than by work I've tended to go for the bigger price ones ......this appears to be what you're going through......this time I find I'm being drawn to favourites and not enough of them win to make a profit I'm not sure how to get out of this rut..........I think I might have to wait till November now and the all weather season to get going again...........:loon In the meantime I'm really thinking of some self-imposed rule like 'nothing under 5/1' just to stop me from picking favourites

  15. Re: Last Race Form The Sporting Life have a horse's past form but they use abbreviations as well All sites will use abbreviations to fit the info on a page It's worth sticking with the racing post.............just keep at it until you learn what everything means and if you're in doubt over something just ask.............

  16. Re: BBOTD Friday 3rd of August Good 2.00m - Quest For Peace - win at 6/1 bog bet365 I think it might be worth taking on Gatewood as he moves up to pattern company. He looks good enough to hold his own but might need a run or two to get used to the different pace of small field group races after running in big field handicaps Quest for peace ran poorly last time on softish ground at Royal Ascot but he'll be more at home on todays going. He's a solid group 3 horse, having won at this level and finished 2nd in a group 2. Should really have as good a chance as Songcraft, the second favourite, who's never won a group race

  17. Re: BBOTD Thursday 2nd of August Epsom 8.30 - Halling Dancer - win at 7/4 bog bet365 Won last time out at Ascot by making all and just held on .........that was a stiff finish on soft ground so i expect he'll see the trip out better here even though it's half a furlong further There is another front runner who might hassle him and it's one of Mark Johnston's which is a big worry with the form his yard are in, but this one looks poor Fave at the moment is Yojimbo who drops in class from running at Goodwood a couple of days ago and has a good track record but a tactical race might not suit him as he's usually held up and takes a bit of time to get running

  18. Re: BBOTD 1st of August Perth 8.30 - Fog Patches - win at 6/4 bog bet365 Looks a real stayer and is by Oscar. I like jumps horses by Oscar he's won on heavy ground over slightly shorter should get this trip on soft ground Very few of these appear to be at home on soft ground - I'm guessing they were declared before the ground changed but are taking their chance anyway Lucinda Russell has 3 of the 7 runners and my selection would appear to be the choice of the stable jockey

  19. Re: top 20-30 horses in the last 5 to 30 years I'm guessing the OP probably wants 13............one for each month and one for the front cover I'd say 5 jumpers for the winter months Desert Orchid, Best Mate, Kauto Star See You Then, Istibraaq Put those in Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, March 7 Flat horses for April to october Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Salsabil, Dubai Millenium, Yeats, Sea The Stars, Black Caviar Front Cover - Frankel

  20. Re: BBOTD wed 24th July Ling 3.40 Scottish vespers - win at 6/4 bog PP One of Stoute's in the maiden race - he's already run well on the track when he finished 2nd in a maiden race in May with the rest 11 lengths and more back Didn't appear to like the soft ground last time First time visor to sharpen him up and Ryan Moore back in the saddle This looks a poor race and if he doesn't win today it's probably the knackers yard - I wish he knew !
