  1. Re: BBOTD Wednesday 1st May Ascot 2.00 - Anticipated - win at 5/2 bog wm hill This looks like the best 2yo race of the season so far and you'd have to think that Hannon would be aiming one of his better ones at the race Anticipated won first time out at windsor despite missing the break, swerving at the start and starting off behind the field. Should be a lot more to come with that experience under his belt Favourite is Elsworth's horse, Justice day, who was impressive winning what is usually a good maiden at Newbury. However he was running on the favoured part of the track that day the race might have been a bit easier to win with half the field running at a disadvantage

  2. Re: Punting advice The 'Earth Amber' intests me............ I was typing it up in BBotD last night at about 11pm and it was 12/1 best price (which is what you say pricewise stated) But by the time I'd finished typing it was best price 9/1............let's say that was 11.15pm So.............at what time does tomorrow's Pricewise become available ? Could that fall from 12/1 to 9/1 be because some people have access to Pricewise the night before ? Presumably people at the Racing Post do !

  3. Re: Flat Racing 1st May I like Earth Amber in the Sagaro.............EW, currently best price around 9/1 Nicky Henderson French import who's finished 2nd to solid group race performers the last twice, should be suited by the extra 2 furlongs and has only had 4 lifetime runs Ran a bit green on seasonal/British debut a couple of weeks ago and could be a big improver (I was typing it on BBotD when the best price crumbled from 12/1 to 9/1 so I dumped the post)

  4. Re: BBOTD Tuesday 30th April Ling 3.00 - Lowther - win at 7/1 bog betvictor Take a chance on a bit of an old timer who's won plenty on the all weather Looks to be in decent nick at the moment having won last time out, he's won over CD, he's won off higher marks in the past A couple of the younger ones at shorter prices look to be the consistant kinds who place a lot but don't win

  5. Re: BBOTD Sunday 28th April 2012 Longchamp 2.40 - Giofra - win at 10/3 Stan james Can't resist having a go at the first European group one race of the season Giofra finished 2nd to the mighty Cirrus des Aigles in this last year (well beaten) but there doesn#t look to be anything of his class today. She's had a run this season finishing 3rd in the Dubai Duty Free and 10f on good ground looks to be her ideal conditions (assuming that the French going report is anywhere near accurate, which is a pretty big assumption) She finished about 4 lengths behind Ridasiyna (todays fave) in the L'Opera on Arc week-end but that was on heavy ground and i reckon there's a fair chance she can reverse placings in this speedier test, particularly as the Fav's trainer has said she's not fully wound up for her seasonal debut. The German colt, Pastorius, is interesting.............in a poor year for 3yo colts last season I think he was the only one that managed to win an all aged group one race. However it was a poor race in Germany and probably no better than group 3 level. He was beaten 7 lengths by Frankel and only 1 length by Danedream so he should be competitive. Get the feeling though that genuine group one types will always be too good for him in the 'big' countries

  6. Re: Sources of study

So what went wrong Trotter? Is it just boredom with all the racing or has the personal life took over. I always thought you were pretty sound on AW racing but often see you select these 5 runner races nowadays. I guess thats because it doesnt take too long to sift through it. Dont forget you can soon whittle a 12 runner race down to 5 possibles. Get your speed ratings going again, it will revitalise your appetite for the game.
Not sure what happened, BH......... I still spend my evenings flitting between the computer and the telly but I've just lost the willingness to spend time studying the form As you rightly say I've got into the habit of looking at small field races for 5 minutes and picking something but i know it's not a satisfactory way of doing it The old adage is true................the harder I worked at it the luckier I got.........:p
  7. Re: BBOTD Friday 26th April Sand 3.15 - Fantastic Moon - win at 11/2 bog bet365 Highest rated of these on ORs and looked a decent 2yo last season Won a group 3 at this track and was unlucky when sent off favourite for the Royal Lodge, hampered just as he was making his run Went over for the Breeders Cup but flopped Buick rides him today having won twice on him (he lost both times other jockeys rode him)

  8. Re: BBOTD 25th April Punch 5.30 - Reve de Sivola - win at 11/2 bog betvictor I think the ground has possibly gone against Solwhit now - he's won on heavy lots of times but always at shorter trips. It remains to be seen if his stamina holds up for 3 miles on heavy. Everything looks OK for Quevega but although she won at cheltenham it wasn't as impressive as the last few years and you just wonder wether time is catching up with her Reve de Sivola is an out and stayer and will love the ground. He's happy running at the front so they have a choice to set a fast pace and try and run the finish out of the irish horses. He won at this track as a novice

  9. Re: Sources of study Sounds great peacock !..............and very much like i used to be a couple of years ago where I'd often spend all evening looking at a couple of races, going round all the sites, not rushing, ambling along, nipping back to the forum for a while, stop to watch something on telly before getting back to the race...............ah, the good old days. ..............:cow That was a very enjoyable way to spend an evening and often resulted in good selections because you'd devoted the time necessary to think about it and weigh things up I've got out of those habits lately though...................:unsure

  10. Re: Sources of study I use the Post for everything apart from 2 things.......... Firstly the Post's 'todays racing' lists all the days racing but doesn't have the number of runners in each race............so I always start with the 'Life' list of todays races which does include the number of runners My initial look at the days racing is to see which races i want to look at in more detail and the main determining factor in that is field size The second thing I use the Life for as there's no equivalent on the Post is the option to highlight 'Runs after 60 or more days off' in the horses form pages. Invaluble early season to see if horses have a record of going well fresh or usually need a run

  11. Re: Godolphin doping scandal Personally I doubt that Shiek Mo would knowingly accept his trainers using doping for a simple reason............ He wants to find out which his best horses are so he can breed from them Would he send his valuble breeding mares to a stallion who might have been a useless racehorse but won a the Derby fuelled on steroids ?

  12. Re: BBOTD Tuesday 23rd Wolv 3.20 - World Map - win at 5/1 bog wm hill Always worth watching out for Mark Johnston horses stepping up in trip on their handicap debut after 3 runs over shorter distances This one has been been running over 7-9 furlongs and up to 12F today Noted running on at the finish last time

  13. Re: Godolphin doping scandal More news on the racing sites now........ Two different steroids were found. The horses concerned............. Desert Blossom, Certify, Fair Hill, Ghostflower, Orkney Island, Sweet Rose and Valley Of Queens tested positive for ethylestranol and Artigiano, Bathrat Amal, Opinion Poll and Restraint Of Trade tested positive for stanozolol. the best known are Certify and Opinion Poll, a group two winning stayer none of the horses will be allowed to run for an extended period of time, to be determined by a disciplinary panel Certify is definitely out of the Gns

  14. Re: BBOTD Monday 22nd Kemp 4.20 - Plunder - win at 7/1 bog bet365 Very competitive 3yo handicap with no less than 5 last time out winners in the field I'm going for one of the other runners in the hope that he's really well in on his handicap debut. He's only run twice. First time up he won a maiden over CD despite acting green in the prelims and drifting in the betting Second time up he was pitched into a conditions race and finished 4th of 5 over a mile where he led most of the way then faded in the finish, The drop back to 7 furlongs today should suit The two horses that passed him in the race finish are rated 96 and 90. One of them finished 2nd in a listed race at Newmarket last week. That looks really good form and it might just be that my selection has been let in lightly with a mark of 79. Well drawn in stall 2 if they intend to front run as he has in his previous 2 outings

  15. Re: BBOTD Sunday 21st April 2012 Winc 3.10 - King Edmund - win at 3/1 bog wm hill Showed signs of returning to form last time in a small field handicap over this CD. Although short in numbers it was a decent race Best right handed and goes OK on any ground Looks well handicapped if he returns to form as he's below his last winning mark

  16. Re: Identifying progressive horses Tricky one isn't it ! I find that I often try and convince myself that a horse is progressive in order to justify a selection Very often there's no real evidence apart from the horse being either young or lightly raced I'm guilty (and I'm sure we all are !) of making my selection then looking around for something to flesh out my reasoning..........in reality a young or lightly raced horse has just as much chance of going backwards as of going forwards If you think about it every young horse should progress merely by the fact of getting older, bigger, stronger, less mentally immature..........it's not progression that's important, it's progression relative to the other horses in the group it's runnning against So if you're looking at 3yo handicaps over the next few months all the horses are probably progressing as indicated by the weight for age scale...............what you're trying to find is the one that is progressing faster than the average 'growing up' progression of the general 3yo horse population

  17. Re: BBOTD Thursday 18th April Newm 4.40 - Premio loco - win at 8/1 bog wm hill With doubts around the overnight fave, Bonfire - he's drifting and connections say he might need the run - I'm taking a chance on the old timer, the 9 year old premio loco He's still capable of as good form as any of these, winning 3 group races last season, he's had an outing in the Winter Derby and should well suited if this turns into a tactical race. He might even make the running as he has in the past

  18. Re: Punting advice I don't think the Wood Ditton is the race it used to be 20 or more years ago Just had a look at the last 10 winners and none of the names jumped out as being horses i remember. Neither of the last 2 winners has won a race since. The winner from 3 years ago won on the AW over the winter The one from 4 years ago never won another race You have to go back 5 years to find a horse who subsequently won at group 3 level In fact don't they refer to the race now as the first of the Triumph Hurdle trials...........

  19. Re: BBOTD 16th April 3.50 Sou - Tajneed - win at Evs bog betvictor This is a 2 horse race on paper and on the ratings My horse dead heated in a Seller on his seasonal debut a couple of weeks ago, is a sprinter and has run well here before on his only visit in a much better race irish Heartbeat is more of a 7/8 furlong horse and has no course experience Whisky bravo would have a chance if you could recapture his form of 18 months ago. He loves it here but was in lousy form when last seen
