Quite like Rydz's chances against Wade. There's a boost on 365 which looks worth taking which is him to win and hit the highest checkout. Checkouts are obviously Wade's strength - they have to be as he's not a big scorer - but as I think Rydz will win I'll take a chance he hits the high checkout in the process. Price is 4.33.

Traditionally the curtain raiser for the new darting season, this year's Masters feels a little different - as we've already had the World Series events in Bahrain and Denmark, won by Michael Smith and Peter Wright respectively. Here are my thoughts on a couple at bigger prices who could walk away with the trophy and £65k winners cheque.

Since the tournament was expanded to the top 24 players in the World, we've seen the very top players get overshadowed by a couple of outsiders. This could be due to the PDC announcing that the winner of the Masters gets a spot in the upcoming Premier League, so maybe more incentive for players who haven't already guaranteed a spot in the PL to take this event more seriously. I'm hoping that trend continues as I've picked out a couple of players who probably haven’t done enough yet to be considered PL picks for 2023.

    1pt e/w Ross Smith (66/1 General)
From the top half of the draw I'm taking Ross Smith to continue his excellent form. Smith picked up the European Championship title back in October, playing some outstanding darts with some unbelievable 180 hitting. He continued that form into the World Championship where he was a touch unlucky to lose in the third round to Dirk van Duijvenbode 4-3, in a final sudden-death leg. There were 31 180s hit during that match, a record for a best of 7 set match, with Smith hitting 19, also a record. 'Smudger' has been handed a pretty tough draw in this tournament, he's got Damon Heta first up, followed by World Champion Michael Smith in the second round. He's then seeded to meet Danny Noppert and Gerwyn Price en route to the final, but this tough draw is reflected in his attractive odds of 66/1. If Smith can continue to score like he has been, he's going to be a match for anyone this weekend.

1pt e/w Dimitri van den Bergh (33/1 PaddyPower / Coral)
From the bottom half of the draw I'm going for Dimitri van den Bergh. It maybe easy to forget that the Belgian was a semi-finalist at the World Championship earlier this month, seeing off Lourence Ilagan, Krzysztof Ratajski, Kim Huybrechts and Jonny Clayton, before running into Michael van Gerwen. Since then Dimi was involved in both World Series events earlier this month, putting in a disappointing performance in Bahrain, but looking much more like himself in Copenhagen. 'The Dreammaker' has Gary Anderson in the first round followed by another former World Champion in the second round, in the shape of Rob Cross. You’re never quite sure how serious Anderson takes his darts these days, and Cross stated his dislike for this tournament in a recent interview - so maybe van den Bergh has the most motivation to go well from this section of the draw.

In the last couple of years we've seen Jonny Clayton and Joe Cullen pick up this title, with Mervyn King and Dave Chisnall making the final. I'm hoping that Ross Smith and Dimitri van den Bergh can continue the trend of outsiders going deep in this event.

Draw is really taking shape now. I suppose Peter Wright was the first big casualty as nobody expected Wade to make the latter stages. Here is the afternoon shift :
    Searle V De Sousa
    Noppert V Soutar
    Anderson V Dobey
An interesting line up and one full of quality. Searle takes on De Sousa first up. De Sousa was pretty unimpressive in the first couple of sets against Whitlock with averages of 81.56 and 76.88 but he came back into it and hit 102.48 in the third set, 96.16 in the 4th and then won a deciding set with an 88.13 average. It's really going to be about which De Sousa turns up. Searle won his match 3-0 and hit an 88.60 average but you get the feeling that he could have gone higher if pushed. H2H shows these two have met 4 times and De Sousa has won 3, which is the last 3 that they've played. 2 of those 3 have been deciding legs and only one of those matches was this year. A 6-4 win for De Sousa at the Belgian Darts Open that Dave Chisnall won. It's likely going to be a very close match and I can't see any less than 6 sets.
Danny Noppert takes on Soutar in the second match. Noppert should have beaten Cameron 3-0 but instead he let him back into the match and Cameron ruined my bet by hitting 180 after 180 before Noppert finally stopped mucking about and won the match. Meanwhile, Soutar beat Gurney 3-0 and is yet to drop a set after another 3-0 win over Cuming. This one could be a close one also, Soutar beat Noppert in their h2h but you would think Noppert would be more likely on the big stage. I think I will try Noppert to win with most 180s again. Whilst the "both to win a set, Noppert wins" is also an option.
Finally, Gary Anderson takes on Chris Dobey. Anderson hit a 96 average in the win over Razma and hit 4 180s. Meanwhile, Dobey won with a 3-0 win over Kleermaker but his average was 10pts lower than that of Anderson and the h2h shows Anderson winning the last 3 and 2 of those being this year. Infact, Dobey has won just 2 of the 10 matches between the two. With that in mind, and the fact Anderson looked much better of the two, for me, it's an easy pick on Ando. We should see 180s galore in this match and although it's pushing it to suggest 20. The boosted 13/2 on this outcome looks a nice bet.
5.5pts Noppert to beat Soutar and hit most 180s 10/11 paddypower
4pts Anderson to beat Dobey and both players to win a set evens paddypower
2pts Anderson to beat Dobey and both players to hit 6 180s 2/1 paddypower
    2pts 20 or more 180s (Anderson V Dobey) 13/2 paddypower
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1pt afternoon treble - Both players to throw 6+ 180s (Searle V De Sousa) / Noppert to win and hit most 180s / Anderson win and both players win a set 7/1 paddypower

    Afternoon session :
    Gilding Vs Owen
    Jansen Vs Nebrida
    Zonneveld Vs L.Williams
    De Sousa Vs Whitlock
I think Gilding probably comes through the first match but I'm quite surprised that it's even money that Owen gets a set here and Gilding go on to win. Owen has won all their head-to-heads but Gilding has most definitely improved as a player over the last 12 months. You would think Owen would have the more nerves out of the two with Gilding playing a few TV tournaments this year and having the more experience but it could be a close one and I reckon Gilding 3-1 or 3-2 unless Owen really does bottle it on the big stage, the even money shot on him getting a set and Gilding to win looks good.
In the second match I would favour Jansen but he's been so poor since that random Players Championship win and I really know nothing about Nebrida and so I'll leave that alone. In the third match, I would normally be rooting for Williams as I think he has a lot of potential. However, it's not happening for him right now and he hasn't played enough. Likely because of becoming a dad but Zonneveld is a good player and I think he wins this 3-1.
Finally, I will take a chance on De Sousa beating Whitlock with the most 180s. I know that every game is different in Darts and Whitlock is a prime example of that, winning with a ton plus average and then going out with an 83, but he looked very average in his last match and whilst I think he will improve, I reckon he would need a 95 odd average to beat De Sousa. I think De Sousa will turn up today. Whitlock only managed 3 180s against Perez and in general, we know De Sousa hits a good solid amount.
3pts Gilding to beat Owen and both players to win a set evens paddypower
2.5pts Zonneveld (-1.5 set handicap) to beat Williams 6/5 paddypower
2.5pts De Sousa to beat Whitlock and hit the most 180s 11/5 paddypower
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    1pt treble of the above 3 - 13/1 paddypower

I also like Ross Smith, no idea what you guys think of it but every time he plays I have the feeling he could be anyone. His high scoring is always putting pressure on the opponent and you need to be a green guy to not be disturbed by this I feel..  I would want to make a bet on both Smiths for the 180s each match.. It's incredible the level of both when they are flying..
