Re: Virgin Poker Festival Back home safe and sound from Brum with Rob. I'll give more of an update later, after I've spent some quality time with Mrs McG :ok Just one gem to be going on with. A young local chip-twiddler (one of those annoying bods who can do tricks with chips) replaced Sam at the same table of Burnley Joe and myself (yes, I had the privilege? of BJ acting before me for 2 hours last night) late yesterday, tried to nick my 2k BB with a 3xBB raise, but I had TT so I shoved in my 22k, easily covering him. First comment from BJ "Well done mate, let's hear it for the blinds!". The guy took AGES deciding whether or not to call, his concentration not helped when Joe asked him "Bloody hell fella, you're taking a while. Have I got time to nip out for a fag?". Young gun didn't like it, and asked BJ to act his age - not a wise thing to do when he's in to double figures on the cider-counter. He finally folded (later claimed he had AJ), but was really wound up. With only 2 hands to go, and down to his final 10K or so, he announced "I'm gonna go all in for the next 2 hands, and if I win, I win - if not, I'm out, but it's not worth coming back without more than 20K." Sure enough, last hand of the night is Joe's BB (NB - I KNEW the table was set up wrong today when Joe was in the BB to start with for the first hand), and young chap goes all in for about 14K; it'll cost 12K for Joe to call, but he only has 82s. Now, 99% of players will lay this down, but I was sat next to the other 1%. BJ pondered for ages, uttering classics, such as "I've only got 82, but I'd love to knock you, you cocky cnut, 'cos I really don't like you". Retort from lad "What did he say? He can't call me a cnut in my home town" (does this mean Joe CAN call him a cnut when we go to Newcastle?). Joe finally calls for about a quarter of his chips, but, amazingly, the 82s does not beat K3o, and the other guy is up to about 26K. Joe and I both appeared on the featured table today without success, but where, I hear you wonder, is that young chip-twiddler? seat 1.Mark ryan (London).......160,500 seat 2.Ted 'Gnashers' Smith..(Blackpool) 432,500 chip leader Seat 3 Dave Young (Dursley Gloucester) 94,000 Seat 4 Tom"Billyboy" Butlin 81500 Seat 5 Chihoa Tsang ((London) 87000 Seat6 Derek Baber (Bristol) 94,500 Seat 7 Sandra Jolley (Stokes) 425,000 Seat 8 Peter Hathaway (Staines) 238500 Seat 9 Stephen Sass (St Heles) 174000 Seat 10 Dorian Lane (Worksop) 272500 Have a guess? EDIt - Yes, he finished in 5th, complaining that chip leader Sandra is "the luckiest player he's ever met in his life" and "when it's not your day, it's not your day". He's clearly forgotten about the hand much earlier in the day, when he shoved with AK, to be called by a larger stack holding AA, yet caught 2 Kings on the board to rag an unlikely victory. Yes Billybob, "when it's not your day, it's not your day" - you moaning, forgetful, ungrateful, cocky cnut, as Joe would now (probably) say.

Re: Virgin Poker Festival

On the final table we have just lost Chi Hao Tsang, losing a race against Sandra Jolly... Chi Hao wins £500 for his efforts...................Congratulations.
Chuff me, he did well. Tikay made him stand up this morning, 'cos he only had about 11k in chips :loon

Re: Virgin Poker Festival

Does "Young Gun" play online by the name of GazOulton? :tongue2
Oulton made the money, but was out soon after Ralph (Maverrix). With blinds at 4k and 8k, he shoved with AK for his last 30k, got called by 2 other bigger stacks, and a fourth took a long while before folding QQ. Flop of J54, and the first caller went all in for a further 40k. A long pause, but the 2nd caller folded - oulton sees the other guy turn over JJ, and gets no miracle help (no Q either). I'd intentionally sought him out (identified by Michael Hobson, Hobbo) and he seemed, I have to say, quite an affable chap. He made the money, so respect to him for that. McG :gimme

Well the AK against AA, i got all my money in on flop, so didnt get all my money in with the worst hand, but yeh i did get lucky!! Sorry cowboy didnt mean to come across arrogant on film, was just gutted, but she played her big stack really well on final table so fair play to her!! Thanks to Tower, CCTV, Al the fox and everyone else who was involved with the running of the event, you guys work tiredlessly for the forum memebers and it is greatly appreciated, now go and get yourselves a drink, you deserve one!! Fantastic tournament, really enjoyed it. Well done gnashers nice result sir, thought you would win it when u got heads up, but nevermind still a very nice cash!! Cheers billyboy
If ya gonna report it like that, put his response in as well? I was 10% with the lucky cnut, to be fair his dwells really piss me off as well. But I don't retort to calling him a cnut :\

If ya gonna report it like that' date=' put his response in as well? I was 10% with the lucky cnut, to be fair his dwells really piss me off as well. But I don't retort to calling him a cnut :\[/quote'] 2 things - firstly, I had only seen his interview on Nutz.TV, so had no idea about his comments re the AK/AA situations - still a lucky boy. Secondly, the cnut phrase was originally used by BJ, which I simply paraphrased with additional adjectives. The trite comment of "when it's not your day, it's not your day" just seemed a little bit rich, bearing in mind those earlier situations :ok

Re: Virgin Poker Festival McG, I apologise, I wasn't saying that you did call him a cnut, but surely the best response from BJ would to have called the clock on him? IMO to win a comp you have to have an element of luck a fair few times, but I think Billyboys comments were referring to Sandra Jolleys luck, who hit every race, and also won a lot of hands from way behind. Her luck did actually run out and she went from a 3-1 chip lead with 3 left to finish 3rd.

Re: Virgin Poker Festival I took the decision to play aggressive I was playing 70% of the pots and I never limped and I got away with it for a long time. I had Rick Dacey on my table and he and one other player realised what I was up to and decided to play back at me and it worked as I it quad 3's and they thought I was at it and then I hit trip Q's and they thought I was at it :lol so I was building nicely. Then because no one had legislated for sit outs (we had two at out table) the TD decided that they would be blinded every hand and it would double every hand. This gave us the ridiculous situation where the blinds were at 300 and there could be 4K in the pot pre flop. Obviously people limped in every hand but if you had a hand you had to raise big and the all ins started flowing which put pay to myself and Rick on consecutive hands and we agreed if we had a full table we would both still be playing but que sera. A great event by Joe and his team at Virgin (including former goalpoker legend Ted). I agree the dealers were not the best and the food was barely edible but we had a good time. A crazy dealers choice cash game back at the lodge with vodka and kebabs ensued and when most had retired myself, fenners, the mole and hobbo continued until gone 7am, which was not ideal prep for day two. Once back to the room a distinct lack of dexterity in setting up the sofa bed ensured that me and fen had some Steve Martin/John Candy 'those are not the pillows' moments before Uber wrecked our boys moment at noon. After being completely abandoned by most of PL myself, slapdash and the mole decided we would enter the £30 rebuy, so I regged and went to rest my eyes for a bit and woke up at midnight :loon thus saving myself lots of rebuys. Good to see the happy plers again and good to meet the McG twins for the first time (even though I was unsure who was senior and who was junior ;)). I met the man Oulton as well, he seemed like a nice chap. Well done to sonic sum young for cashing because he was a nice young lad but god knows what he though of us lot.

Re: Virgin Poker Festival I was out in something like 75th shortly after the start of the final three levels on day one, having gone completely card dead for the previous two levels - best I had in the second of those levels was Q7os - no aces, kings or pairs. Finally pushed with KQ when on 13k, blinds 1k,2k and got punished by KK. Might have been a different story during level number 3 when on a table with Burnley Joe and we also had the situation with a sit-out doubling up every hand. Joe went all-in to 'steal' the 3k plus in the pot and I decided not to call with my jacks - partly because it was Joe - and he showed 89d when not contested. Mind you he probably would have hit the straight or the flush, or both ! Good to meet PL faces old and new and thanks for the good wishes and advice re Australia. Will need to improve my live game ! :ok

Re: Virgin Poker Festival just got home after another heavy night:cheers:cheers:cheersin fact me and gaz might as well have stayed in my car ,it was probably bigger than our room and we were only in there for a few hours:zzz. sorry about leaving you brian, tried to find you and gave you a bell but i think you were asleep dreaming of fenners;) bit more of a write up on my main event, didn't have much time to post last night as the games were moving thick and fast due to gazzas new jj like style:eek first couple of hours nothing exciting really happened won a few smallish pots and stayed at the starting stack.i did have hilly on my table which was quite a laugh ,and after a bit of a ribbing he went out pretty early after a short stacked push with k6 that run into ak. after the break i had 2 pretty big hands close to each other vs the same player. first hand i was mid position and pic up js blinds were 100/200 i raised to 800 with no callers in front.all fold round to bb who raises to 1600,i called he was fairly solid but had been playing aj aq etc so thought id have a look at the flop. it came down 10 high with 2 clubs i bet out 2000 he reraised all in:eeki had a bit of a think but had to lay it down which it turned out was a good choice as he flipped aa. this put me down to about 5500 left:crynext round however the situation reversed :) i pick up aa in the bb the villan from above raised in mid position . pre flop he raised to 1000 i reraised to 2000 he called flop came kk rag i bet out 2k he called i think uh oh .i check the blank turn knowing i will pretty much have to call but he checks as well. on the river i pushed my last 1500 which he called i turn my aces and he shows his queens:nana:nana so back up to 11k . my table at that point had a big stack of about 19k so i had a ok stack which i had for the next hour or so. the hand that eventually took me out was a race my jj vs his ak.he raised in front of me and i reraised all in which he called.he hit a ace on the turn to knock me out:sad.think i went out in the 130s but it was tricky to tell as the tourney info was way behind. played 3 stts after that which went very poorly, elvis took me out of 1 calling my all in with trip js on the turn he had a flush draw .guess what happened there:puke. left the casino at about 2 and headed to the best travel lodge in the world over the road:notworthy:notworthy:notworthythe guy at the bar was so laid back he was horizontal.anything you wanted he was straight on the phone :ok the dealers choice cash game was pretty amusing spoof super stud and omaha hi lo the order of the day. funniest hand had to be gazzas £40 scoop vs fenners at omaha hi lo. it was 10p 20 p pot limit:eekso getting to £40 was quite some feat but was was really amazing was gazza didnt have a clue what was going on:lol:lolhe kept saying to me what should i do ,i just kept saying bet:loon anyway we ended up leaving at about 5.30:zzz day 2 kicked of with me and gazza getting the love birds up at 12 with a cup of much needed tea. back over to the casino for another day of heavy drinking and fun:nana:nana played some wii bowling that i was pretty awful at and gazza managed to beat brian even though it was his first try as well:lol:lol me and gazza then spent a while abusing west ham at the bar with compo the pro who seemed like a nice bloke:ok then thought a stt might be in order but it ended up being a bit tougher than your usual stt as compo and a couple of virgin staff were playing as well . me and gaz both cashed him 3rd me second after a real sick beat hu with the oponnent hitting a 2 outer on the river:eyes we then spent a while chatting to the virgin girls;)then the lure of the table games kicked in and gaz decided 3 card poker would be the way forward as he had never played it before and that gave him the edge, so he sits down puts his money on the table and says right love how do you play this then:lolafter watching about 5 hands i remarked how much of a advantage the house had ,5 after that i was playing as well:(. somehow half an hour later i was £50 up and off to ba's house for an improptue home game. gotta thank ba and donna for their hospitality ,lovely food and some great fun at the table with the all new mole inspired gazza who turned into mike matuso in the course of 1 afternoon:loonit was really eye opening talking to the mole for a while at the casino and he gave us a lot of great advice not only that he's a really nice bloke:ok. after the moles words of wisdom gazza went from being a little negative to being ultra confident.all we heard all night was my rags have hit 2 pair again you cant call,i have you beat i'm only telling you because i like you:lol:lol:lol:lolvery amusing but he was also playing pretty well as well;)even tho he did keep cracking my high pps:spank. the night ended with us leaving at about 4.30 after managing to wake ba after he fell asleep at the table .he did try dealing before he fell asleep but he couldnt see the table and kept throwing cards on the floor:lol:lol:lolneedless to say we were all a bit worse for wear:tongue2. nice to meet loads of new faces from the lounge and see all the usual suspect and also virgins staff like ted and joe and also all the other players ,nice to meet hobbo as well after playing him a fair bit on paradise and also young sonic who seemed like a nice bloke:clap:clap:clap all the games were run and played in a friendly fun way which made it a very enjoyable weekend for all and i will definately be trying to get in the next one:clap:clap:clap:clap

Bad Beat Morlspin’s got 50,000 Flying Club miles as a result of the travesty below. Morlspin’s pocket 2’s hit a set on the flop, made a full house on the turn and was beaten by runner-runner quad 5’s on the turn. STT Side Event Congrats to Ian Evans (emsian8144) for taking the plaudits in Sunday’s STT Champs comp plus £475 and 50’000 Flying Club miles. Well done to all those who won an STT and sorry to all who had a wait for a table – it was our first bash at this and we’ll make sure there’s more on next time!! PokerPlayer Sunday Side Event We have a bit of a confession here! Once the main event was over we decided to let our hair down and this ultimately resulted in our drunken unconsciousness before the tourney ended. The Broadway is helping us track down the lucky winner so we can give him (or her) his prize and we apologise for missing his big moment. Wii Bowling I’m sure some of you will have sore arms today and the best of the slingers was Emile Foyster with a monster score of 251! Once again thanks for helping to make it so much fun and we hope to see you at our next Festival in Spring 08 for an even bigger and better time (we’ll send you details just as soon as we have them). Ollie p.s. This was our first festival and while we thought it went really well we want to make the next one is even better so please let us know about the things you liked and any suggestions of what could be improved. We can’t promise to be able to do everything but will try our very best. p.p.s Many of you also asked the guys and I lots of questions about the Virgin Poker room over the weekend. As sobriety wasn’t a state familiar to most of us for the 48 hours I’m sure some things will have slipped under the radar. So if you have got any feedback/issues/questions about anything then please drop them to me in an e-mail. Again we’ll try to get as many resolved as fast as possible. Re: Virgin Poker Festival Good to meet some PL faces this weekend - went out in the last hour on Saturday in about 70th place. Tried to push a few hands late on to make it worthwhile for day 2 and got caught out (QQ ran into Aces) Then my mate dropped £40 on the slots so we proceeded to waste it on beer/vodka and showed our drunken skills on thw Wii bowling. Saw you guys playing in the Travelodge bar when i stumbled in at 4am - would of stopped off and joined in but wouldnt have been able to focus on the cards (Plus didnt want to give Fenners the chance to get his own back after i hit trip 7s earlier in the day to steal half his chips) p.s. How the feck did those sofa beds work then ?? p.p.s. Did anybody have a shower curtain in their bathroom, i had a shower the following morning and ended up having to do the backstroke to get out of the room as it was flooded (Somebody must have been hard up to pinch a travelodge shower curtain)

Re: Virgin Poker Festival

Whooo hooooo just had an email off Joe, i won the bad beat competition !! Thats my WSOP flights sorted!
n1 Graeme - good laydown on the river too - you were behind to a lot of hands - glad he turned over the case 5 :ok As for bad beats, I'm amazed jarjaruk hasn't posted here yet. She suffered 3 nasty beats in the space of 6 hands. Probably composing the 8-page litany of disaster as I speak.;)

Re: Virgin Poker Festival And now a few more thoughts on the weekend. The tables were very tightly squeezed together, and the occasional tables had very little space between the line and the outside of the table to stack your chips. Dealers varied between the apathetic chunky girls who clearly knew very little about the game, and complained about the casino while we were playing ("you'll probably get food poisoning - the food's horrible here"), through the competent guy who looked like Willie Tann's younger brother, and on to some young lad, who could shuffle and deal faster than I could think. It sometimes took you a good few seconds after he had dealt to understand which hand had won (or was that the beer kicking in?). As other have said, it was great to meet so many people who have simply been faceless online nicknames to us until now. The usual suspects of runadrum and AG, together with Valiant and Sam, made sure that Rob and I got to meet the other PL'ers, including mike (sporting some dodgy sideburns) and lou, who had come down just to rail. Checked in fairly early at the casino, at the same time as Fenners and Brian, and got to meet uber, morl, gazza (Wii bowling champ) and mo - most of whom I expected to meet. Also sought out (and found) some less well known (to me) characters - adetrick, slapdash, chess, Ralph (R'n'R), wallg, danarama and jarjar .... I've probably missed some others - nothing personal ;) I enjoyed the poker - really chuffed to make day 2, and started about mid-way in the list of 55 with 34k, but had taken a decision that, with blinds and antes costing 5k an orbit, I could not afford to drop below 20k too early, unless I seriously jeopardised my ability to make the money. When down to 25k, shoved with AT, with just the button and blinds to follow, but got called by BB's AQ, so I was down to my last 3k :$ A few hands later, with my BB putting me all in next time, I shoved with 55 - beat A3, but JT in the BB made trips and I was out :wall. My sole consolation was that I made the featured table - chuffing hot it was under those lights. I'd played fairly tight for the first 10 levels, being fortunate to have AA and KK attract decent pots, but never got above 37k. Nearly missed out on day 2 when, when down to my last 24k, i checked in the BB with T6 after Burnley Joe (a true legend - more later) had flat called in the SB with Qx. Flop came Q, 10, 3 - Joe checked, I bet min amount, and Joe raised 3x. I'm sure he's on the rob, so I went all in. He waited ages (it would have meant him calling half his chips), then folded. Of course, I quickly mucked my cards, lied and told him I had flopped 2 pair. He said (but did I believe him?) that he had mucked a Queen :dude Sat next to Joe for about 3 hours of poker is an education in itself. He hardly picked up a hand, but few dared to call his raises. He lost out on 2 or 3 iffy calls, but his plan had been to get to 50k+ before the start of day 2. He is a true legend, however, for his ability to extract drinks from anyone and everyone. Strangers were passing by, asking their own friends if they would like a drink, and Joe would try to blag one. I asked him if he'd like a drink. "Cider please", came the reply. "Sweet or Dry?", I asked. "One of each", was the immediate response - cheeky chuffer - he got a bottle of dry. Very convivial weekend, all in all, apart from the dodgy buffet on both days (Saturday - queued up for scraggy chicken and chips; Sunday - managed to blag slightly better chicken and rice). We saw better food on the hallway of the Travelodge on Sunday morning, when we found our way back to Reception along a trail of partly-used pizza boxes and upturned pizza - imagine a drunk Hansel & Gretel, and you'll get the picture. Funniest moment for me had to be uber's woeful early attempts to get the Wii Bowling to work. Fancy footwork counts for nothing if you let go of the control too early :lol Looking forward to the next one and a concerted effort from Rob and me to qualify. Cheers all, and thanks for the words of support Stephen (AKA McG) and Rob
