Re: Virgin Poker Festival

n1 Graeme - good laydown on the river too - you were behind to a lot of hands - glad he turned over the case 5 :ok As for bad beats, I'm amazed jarjaruk hasn't posted here yet. She suffered 3 nasty beats in the space of 6 hands. Probably composing the 8-page litany of disaster as I speak.;)
lol..... I shall be posting tonight when I get home from work.... :(... they were three of the most hideously nasty bad beats of my life..... :sad Well done on winning the bad beat prize Graeme - great results (in a weird twisted bad beat sort of waY)...... lol....:loon Trip report tonight.......

Re: Virgin Poker Festival Thanks for the words of encouragement and support people. :notworthy I had a fantastic weekend thanks to virgin :clap I had been sitting pretty after the 2nd break with 27k on a table with: seat 1:?? seat 2:Bluepennant seat 3:The Chaser (AWOP) seat 4:Chess seat 5:ME seat 6:?? seat 7:MoneyIvey seat 8:DaMatrix seat 9:Runadrum seat 10:?? Last hand before the break I made a large raise and when MoneyIvey went ALLIN (:spank) thought for quite a while and passed - he did show large PP. I was then moved to another table where my KK was cracked by 10 9 os which hit 2 pair - this put me on about 9K. :wall I was moved again to sit with BJ and McG where my JJ was beaten by KK and this is where I went down to 2.5 K. :cry I shoved with AQ which doubled me up to 5K and then called an all in with A6s the guy had been trying to nick my extortionate BB ( the antes were stupid :@) and was also called by another. My ace came up and I was up to 30K. :cow The blinds ans antes started to really eat away at the stacks resulting in stupid all ins just to nick the blinds and by the next break I was down to 13K (I had called a short stacks all in with 99 and lost). After talking to most of the other Plers left in ( 5- 6 of us on approx 13k)knowing that we had only 2 levels left of high blinds and antes we all knew that we were at the point of shit or bust. So near enough 2nd or 3rd hand after the break I went all in with A6 suited and was beaten by 99. Leaving BJ and McG on that table to slog it out to try to get to day 2. I can't complain - I was lucky not to be out before the 1st break when I went all in with AK against QQ rivering the A after the board came out HHH H A with my oppo holding the Qh. :$ It was great to see everyone again plus meeting the new guys: McG n Jnr Chess RandR BluePennant

Re: Virgin Poker Festival It was good fun. My first live game apart from PL games and home games with friends. I'll definitely try to get to another one. I made no impression whatsoever in the main event, going out within a couple of hours. I won an STT on Saturday evening, although I really felt for my heads-up opponent. On the last hand, the dealer turned over a card on the river that gave him a flush, which would have given him something like a 5 to 1 chip lead. Then the dealer remembered he hadn't burnt a card, and took the card back for the burn card and dealt a blank to give me the win. To his credit, the other guy was really cool about it: he winced a bit, but didn't make a fuss at all. That won me into a final on Sunday afternoon, where again I didn't do anything worth reporting. I may have been the only PLer with the stamina both to enter the Sunday night rebuy and to stay awake long enough to play in it? It was a mixture of people from the Virgin weekend and locals. I was sat next to a local called Tiny who had a Birmingham accent that made Big Andy sound like the Duke of Edinburgh. He rebought ten times (to be fair, he was being very unlucky) while casting aspersions on all the "internit pliers" (apparently you can sport them a Moyle off). Since I was playing really badly by this point, I thought it was best for the reputation of the internit pliers if I kept my mouth shut. Also, Tiny was twice my size ... Apart from the poker, it was good to meet several old friends again and a few PLers for the first time.

Re: Virgin Poker Festival

Looking pretty poor PL numbers at the end given the number of entries though :sad We might need to practice more deep stack poker ;)
I know this is tongue in cheek GaF but it does raise a point. I think PL has a few experienced deep stack multiday tourney players and a few at this festival with a good CV. Given the numbers entered we should have maybe had 1 or 2 on the final table. The decision you have to make when you go to an event like this is do you want to be serious, focus yourself, drink red bull, go to bed early, eat food etc etc or do you want to meet up with some old friends, have a chat and a drink, have a laugh and a bit fun and if you get lucky a bit of money will come your way. I think the latter was being employed by a lot of Plers. I'm not dissing the prize fund or the status of the event but Joe said himself people should kick back, relax and just enjoy it. TBH I went with the intentions of going for a big cash but once me and Fen realised that we may have Burnley Joe staying in our room we headed straight for the bar. What was disappointing is that people turned up (including a few Plers) determined not to have any fun, miserable faces, sat on their own, not joining in, trying to create some sort of aura that a great poker player needs to be a miserable, moody, arrogant bastid. Some players I know for a fact got knocked out because their bottom lips were protruding that much they couldn't see their cards. There is a time and a place for taking the professional approach but I think on these 'party' weekends that the poker should come 2nd and if you get bust so what, it is not the end of the world.

With 200 people, you're bound to get a few like that, but I can't say I came across very many (or maybe I was one of them :loon). Almost everybody I met seemed to be having fun. But some people are just naturally more introverted and reserved than the party animals like you, Brian.

Re: Virgin Poker Festival i just think in general we didn't play badly, most people either seemed to go out on a race or on a bad beat ,not many seemed to have been seriously outplayed . we just didn't get much luck on the 50 50s etc, on another day i think we could have had a couple on the final table. as for the drinking/partying most of that happened after we were out of the main event ,i suspect most that were in day 2 were probably in bed before daybreak:eek. only bj was playing day 2 and to be honest drunken aggressive is his style;)

Re: Virgin Poker Festival Cracking weekend :ok but first I have to say a big thank you to Jolly who unfortunately could not make it and offered me his seat :clap:clap:ok:ok Travelled up with Uber and we arrived at the hotel about mid day only to be told we could not check in early so left the bags in the car and over the road to a pub for a pint and a burger to set us up nicely for the day. Met at the pub by Andy,Sam,BA and robbie and we all set off for the casino at about 1. Big line on arrival and had to wait about half hour to get signed in. Met up with loads of PL'ers inside and good to see all the usual faces plus some new ones :ok Main event - This was my first "proper" tournament and was really looking forward to it, found my table, sat down and said Hi to a couple of lads already sitting there. Then Tikay wanders over, say's hello and sits down 2 chairs to my right :eek, oh great !. 5 minutes later Dave Compton strolls over says hello and sits down to my left, oh great again !! Had decided that I was going to play tight for the first few levels, just as well really as never seen such a bad run of cards, numerous 92,74,10 6 etc. Did not play a hand for the first 3 hours :loon:lol:lol:lol Then dealt KK and raised 4 x BB, everyone folded except the table calling station who funnily enough called. Flop came Q53 and I bet the pot, other guy called and turn came out 9 so I pushed all in. Other guy took ages and then called and turned over Q7 :lol:lol:lol so a handy double up and sitting quite comftable. Tikay and Compo did say something to the other guy along the lines of "he has'nt played a hand for 3 hours and then leads out all the way, what was you thinking? ". Then lost a few chips when my JJ came up against AQ. Won a few back when I had JJ about an hour later and then totally card dead again. As the evening went on and the blinds were steadily going up my stack had dwindled and I thought there was no point in coming back with only a few thousand chips so one of the girls on our table was on the BB (she had unbelievable hands btw, first 3 hours she had AA 4 times and KK twice and showed every time :loon:lol:lol), I looked down at K10 s and pushed all in for about 8k, she called instantly and I thought ohhhhhhh shite and she flips over AKs but a 10 on the river saved me. Onto the last level of the night and with only about 8k in front of me with the blinds at ( I think ) 1600/800 I was UTG with K10s and again pushed all in, folds round to BB who called with about 1/4 of his stack and cant even remember what it was, something like 67 and he hit one of his cards on the flop so it was game over for me, about 1130pm and out in I think 60th. Tikay and Compo were long gone by this stage so happy with that :lol:dude I did want to play a couple of STT qualifiers to the next days event but by the time I went out they had just started the last one :sad Only sensible option left was to hit the bar :beer:beer:beer:beer Not got a clue what time we left there but we ending up in the travellodge ordering pizza and kebabs, me,Uber,BJ,Morls,Fenners,Bri and some young guy (Sonic).then getting the cards/vodka out. numerous games of spoof, omaha hi lo :dude etc etc then Mole and Hobbo turn up and join in the fun. I think Morls was first to retire then Uber and myself left at about 0530 to go and check in at our hotel :lol:lol:lol:lol. We get up about 11 and decide to walk back to travellodge/casino and it only takes about 10 minutes, good stuff, bit of fresh air to clear the head and now ready for another pint :beer. Into the travel lodge and find Bri and Fenners spooning :lol:lol:lol so get them a cup of tea and then back over to the casino. Couple of beers and decide to put a fiver in one of the fruit machines, despite not having a clue what I was doing I walked away about 20 quid up :ok. The Wii machine was looking tempting but having never played one before was a bit hesitant. Bri was telling us all he would kick our ar$es and offered me 6/1. Managed to get this up to 25/1 as long as it was £100 bet. Wont go into the game other than to say altho I won with ease Uber was the real star of the show :lol:lol:lol:lol:lol and I believe Bri has put the cheque in the post :ok:lol:dude The rest of the day is a bit blurry tbh, remember an STT where I cashed in 3rd with Uber in 2nd :ok The Virgin girls were very nice ;):ok Deffo remember the 3 card poker table, no one sat at it and quite a cute young lady dealer standing there all bored. I chuck some money down and ask her how the game was played and her face was a picture as she replied " you dont know how to play" :lol:lol:lol:lol Uber soon joins me and I think I walk away about £20 up and Uber about £50 I think we left soon after to get to BA's A quality weekend and credit must go to Virgin for organising this, especially Ted and Joe whom I'm not sure had a chance to relax. Although they always seemed to have a beer in their hand :beer Thought the structure of the tournament was good :ok Dealers - some were very good and some were very bad :unsure I will definately be trying to qualify for the next one which I understand will be in Newcastle, possibly in March. An excellent weekend, well done Virgin :clap:clap:clap:clap:ok

Hmmm, not sure I agree with this. I don't remember anyone trying to create an aura, act like a TV-star-with-attitude or anything like that. I certainly concentrated more on the poker side of the event than the social side (for example I didn't touch any alcohol), as, for me, the whole attraction of the event was the chance to test my game by playing in a big multi-day event without having to pay a big buy-in. If I just wanted drinking/socializing with a little poker on the side then I could do that in the local Yates Wine Bar poker league. For some of us, sitting at the table quietly concentrating on the cards and the play is where the enjoyment comes from.

Re: Virgin Poker Festival

I didn't know who you were and I did try to shake your hand when you were eliminated but you went in the other direction. I was the person sitting to the left of Tikay and the person who called your raise of AQ when I was short stacked and only had 66. I then nervously said I hoped you had AK which surprised some at the table but when you raised I knew you had a big hand - I was just hoping it was not a big pair. I had to call though as I was so short. Anyway - I had you down as a good player and I will say hi next time now I know who you are.
