ads25
Re: AFL Football - Round 9 (May 25th - 27th) Soccer played more than Aussie Rules? is that right?? :unsure Yep, more people participate in playing soccer than they do football. Read that in the Herald Sun recently actually. When you think about it though it makes sense, Aussie rules is really only played by half the population while Soccer is played all over Australia. This is why the AFL should be very careful, while its hard to imagine soccer taking over as no.1 sport it any time soon, it certainly does have the potential. The way AFL is going (boring matches, interstate teams winning every year, problems with tv deals, etc) and the potential the A-League has, perhaps not this generation but the next generation of kids growing up could become soccer fans. Who knows?

jeffers
Re: AFL Football - Round 9 (May 25th - 27th) I'd imagine that cricket would be our national sport. Having now been in Australia for a total of five months, and having never been here before, I have to say it's hands down AFL that's the national sport. Of course everybody gets behind the cricket team, and everybody watches it. But the local sides, the county (or whatever it's called here) isn't anywhere near as popular as, for example the VFL. AFL gets 50,000 crowds a lot, and upto 80,000+. That cements the No.1 position for me :ok
ads25
Re: AFL Football - Round 9 (May 25th - 27th) In terms of popularity AFL is number 1 for sure. In terms of International sport then cricket would be number 1 probably, and of course in terms of participation soccer is number 1. So quite a good variety there :ok

TazaD
Re: AFL Football - Round 9 (May 25th - 27th) - Western Bulldogs have only won 1 of 8 Second Halfs But what a one it was, ay, Bjv! ;) lol! Looking seriously at; Crows win/Hawks +24.5 (1.93) ...probably a big play for me. Tigers +20.5 Kangas -6.5 Now...the bone I've been gnawing on...the highest score... ...Kangas 5.50, Crows 7.00, Melbourne 26.0 and Richmond 31.0...combine into about 2.52. Now, I know there's a number of ways to go about this...but I'm looking at it this way; I have 4 teams, effectively (if everything goes to plan, and no real reason why it shouldn't!) up against Essendon, at better than evens. Of course the down side is that is the Bombers do happen to kick a monster score they knock down 2 bets instead of one... ...still pondering...but might just give it a miss...stick to the single games. :ok
vagabund
Re: AFL Football - Round 9 (May 25th - 27th) A survey in Australia conducted some six months back (or maybe a year) concluded that swimming is the most popular sport in terms of participation. Now, some of you might say it's part of life as drinking VB. I spent some time on AFL's website and wiki about 18 months back and then didn't keep pace with it. I was particularly impressed with AFL's playoff system with second chance for top teams - that came out of suggestions from public!! Now for this week's footy: bet365 has Hawthorn + 8.5 (1.90) - can extra two points make a difference this time too ?(A couple of weeks back they had hawthorn +16.5 against Freo) ads25, I had a look at your link and NBL thread. Very impressive - to say the least. Can I send you an email about the same?

What about one of these four teams in a High-Low double with St Kilda at TAB. Saints have scored the rounds lowest score twice in 8 games this year, and their performance last week left alot to be desired. They will take a seriously depleted team over to Fremantle on Friday night and its doubtful they will kick a bag. Kang-StK at $19 Adel-StK at $27 Melb-StK at $100 Rich-StK at $110 Definately some value there in my opinion :loon

Crouch Potato
Re: AFL Football - Round 9 (May 25th - 27th) For some reason I can't explain, I fancied Geelong for the lowest score this weekend. Go figure! Some interesting(ish) stats to mull over: 5/13 At Aurora (involving Hawks) have gone Either team Under 15.5 2/3 At Aurora with Hawks v Weagles have gone Either team Under 15.
Beejayville
Re: AFL Football - Round 9 (May 25th - 27th) Not sure where you live vagabund but don't several OS TV networks have a weekly highlights or best game package? Bjv's table is best useful as is IMO. To display it in relation to current ladder position gives the best feel. Of course such a table will always be useless if we don't individually look deeper. I.e. Game was long time ago, team strength at time, team form at time, venue, etc. E.g. Geelong - at a glance the table tells us to take a deeper look. Soccer played more than Aussie Rules? is that right?? :unsure You have the gist of it Ash and good point. It is basically a guide to who has beaten who according to ladder position, and if you delve deeper as you say, then you may find something that can be of use. Combining it with your own thoughts on games it is just what it is, a useful tool that highlights a team's real performance. Digging a little deeper into the Bulldogs...Most pundits say they havn't played that well this season yet, yet they have beaten Cats, hawks and pies who are all above them on the ladder, and they have only lost to the Saints (who were playing well early) and the Crows and the Eagles, both in Top 8. So their form is pretty good to be honest, although I expect Sydney to beat them this week, especially after reading Taza's comments with Sydney, and how they should reduce the doggies inside 50's. They also have big injury cloud over Darcy and Johnson(50/50 to play) and Ryan Griffin will not play.

Beejayville
Re: AFL Football - Round 9 (May 25th - 27th) You guys are making me interested in your national sport (I assume) more and more. It sounds a lot of fun and it seems more if it involves potential to make $$. How do I learn about the sport better? Any suggestions for books/websites? I am particularly interested in pursuing it from stats' point of view. Ads25, When will your computer generated predictions for this week come out? Can you share your method as Burntua Crisp or is it a secret recipe? Here are some AFL Stat's sites that are quite useful... http://www.footywire.com/ http://afl.allthestats.com/ http://www.finalsiren.com/Default.asp There are some good head to head guides and you can also go head to head via player or team. Has some stats on what players perform against opposing tems. Some good info in there for you to start with. You could do no worse than following the boys in here, especially Taza, Crisp, Ads and Ash, as they are very knowledgeable and are spot on when it comes to their tips. they don't always win of course, but they find many a winner, and if they all agree, then usually a certainty :)
Punto Banco
Re: AFL Football - Round 9 (May 25th - 27th) ... according 2 ads stats this is going 2 be a big weekend 4 1st 2 20's... these usually perform fairly good... usually I'll only pick a team that has total of over 25 4 the 1st against a team with less than 20... makes sense I think and I'll be playing this again with 6/8 meeting this criteria... perhaps leaving out the Saints but I fancy playing them Individually and In combination perhaps something like 3units each and 1/2 unit multis... watever we shall see... If i dont play the saints the 1st game 4 this is Saturday anyways....:ok

BURNTUA CRISP
Re: AFL Football - Round 9 (May 25th - 27th) Score Predictor & My Tips(in Bold) Fremantle 104 St.Kilda 65 Carlton 74 Adelaide88 Hawthorn 87 West Coast 90 Richmond 54 Essendon 97 Brisbane 86 Collingwood 84 Scary, but true - St.Kilda is averaging a paltry 58 points per game away from Telstra Dome this season. - The Bombers have played 11 games at the MCG since the start of last season for the grand result of 1 win and a draw. However, their 1st quarters are the exact opposite, 9 winning 1st quarters, a tie and a lose. - Adelaide have won 8 out of their last 10 at Telstra Dome. Preview I cannot remember a team under such pressure to win at home as Fremantle. They are walking a tightrope and one slip up could prove fatal. I still have them making the finals but they must make a stand. They must win 4 of their next 5 games to entertain any thoughts of making the finals. Both midfields are slow and aren’t great at stoppages, but I can’t see the Saints having enough scoring opportunities to trouble the Dockers. The Crows were poor last week, but they don’t often play two bad games in a row and should have no trouble dispatching the Blues. Three terrific inclusions for Adelaide will boost their running power and they won’t miss Burton because he hasn’t fired a shot all season. The Blues depth is being tested now and they won’t score as heavily this week against a great defence. The game in Launceston will be won in the midfield. Hawthorn are at full strength as far as runners go, whilst the Eagles will be dependant on Judd, Braun, Stenglein and Priddis. If the Hawks can get 25 scoring shots, they will win, but I have too much respect for the Eagles defence. Lynch and Hansen will cause problems for the Hawks and should just get over the line. The Magpies get their chance to break their duck at Gabba against the Lions. They lost no respect by losing to the Dogs last week, but their conversion in front of goal is a huge concern. The Lions were appalling last week and are now too dependent Brown. The Magpies should be able to negate him and leave Brisbane with the 4 points. Suggested Bets ADELAIDE Line (-22.5) WESTCOAST Line (-6.5) Collingwood Win
Crouch Potato
Re: AFL Football - Round 9 (May 25th - 27th) I honestly have no idea why but I took Peter Bell for top goalscorer tonight at 35.00. With not many points predicted I suppose I rationaled that guys like Gehrig and Pavlich wont get as many opportunities and so it'll be easier for a smokey to secure it with a 3-4 goal haul. Punto Banco
Re: AFL Football - Round 9 (May 25th - 27th) Not much on 2night 4 me but will put in an interest bet... once again based on ads predictions... ... Ads predictions suggests that Quaters will be scored as follows: 1st: 42 2nd: 38 3rd: 51 4th: 43 ...and halves: 1st: 80 2nd: 94 ... and thats enough for me 2 put bets on each: 3units Freo/Saints 2nd 1/2 highest score @ 1.8 1unit Freo/Saints 3rd 1/4 highest score @ 3.5 Not saying ads predictions are always correct but with the evenish odds on offer I'll take it @ lowish stakes...:ok

Soon as Brisbane played a good side in Adelaide they were well beaten, they were also well beaten away last week by a handy side in Essendon. On the other hand, the Pies form has been excellent this season when away. They lost to the Eagles in Subiaco by 12 points, and beat Adelaide at the AAMI fortress by 4 goals. Lions have a few handy players back, and the Pies will no doubt feel the effect of playing at the Dome last week in a 4 quarter running fest, but anything around $2-00 for the Pies has to be value on their exposed form this season. only lost to the Eagles, Port, and the Dogs at the Dome, and the Dogs rarely lose there, plus the Pies certainly had their chances. Subiaco is a pretty big ground Crouch and St Kilda won't be able to do what they did last week. Their defence is going to struggle to hold both Pavlich and Tarrant. I am having a crack at Tazza at $6-00 to be top goal scorer, he has played well this season and reckon tonight he is going to sizzle. Pavilch gets watched more, while tazza romas around to wherever he wants, and he is capable of having an impact the way he has been playing, and what better time to do it then at home against a depleted defence. :dude

Big ground but shame Saints whimped out of flooding - spoiled a fair dinkum contest. Got the HT/FT home as well as Monfills over our boy Leyton at 4.04 If he's gunna lose, may as well make a few dollars out of it. :D

I'll give you partial credit for prompting me to look for value rather than taking a soft option like Pavlich :ok Tomorrow I note the Crows are $2.20 to reach 25 in the first qtr before Carlton. 3 of the last 4 H2H has seen the Crows achieve this (other time nobody reached 25 in 1st qtr). Also the Blues seem abysmal so I'm thinking that this bet is slightly on the wrong side of evens.

Indeedy-do... ...hope you laid money on said bet, Bjv :ok I got under 185.5 @ 1.50 on BF!! Haven't seen the game...just got home...thought it was easy money....but now I see 6.19 for the Saints?! :eek Will try to catch a replay, but now have the feeling I was more than a little lucky. :$ Anyway...have played what I said I would...Hawks +24.5/Crows...tried all sorts of different angles and really can't see either losing...both at genuinely good prices. I can't remember who it said that Kerr out won't hurt much...but in blustery, slippery conditions, the number 1 clearance man in the AFL will be missed... ...not only for his own good work, but it compounds, now that Hawthorn don't really have to choose a player to shut down. Judd gets the FULL attention on Sewell plus others...still got Pridiss who goes well, but Fletcher? Na...more of a receiver. Already mentioned that Eagles I50's away from home are terrible. Hawks good defensively and should stay in this game all the way... ...not sure what kind of total we'll get, but I'll be prepared to go under 180...highly unlikely tho, esp. given the weather. Crows play Carlton.... Got Richmond +22.5. Like it alot. Only lost 5 of their last 10 at the 'G by more...West Coast, St.K, Coll, Dogs, WC... Essendon won only 1 game there in last 10, by 13...lost to Carlton this year...Hawks and Collingwood convincingly... ...sorry, repeating myself I know, but outside the Dons are crap. Will be a close game. Kingsley in for Richo for sure...maybe even an upgrade... ...Riewoldt goes well...well, obviously bit early to say at AFL level, but played well down here in Tassie and was probably the 2nd stand out player in the under 18 Champs for Tassie behind Mitchell Thorpe. Quite the opposite to Koi, I think it's a good move. Both will be FAR to agile for big Mal...they will get plenty of oppertunities, so I do hope hey convert. I've tipped them to win...think the 22 is a bonus... Got Kangas -5.5. McLean not making the final team is a good thing...no-one else really scares me. Archer back...can't see any reason at all how Frawley, Bizzel, Holland or Robertson could possibly upgrade the worst midfield in the AFL! Too many chances for the high scoring Roos to highly score. ;) Only other game will be Collingwood @ Brisbane....love Bjv's over-optimism!! :lol ... ...(I did tip them! :wall )...but looking for a total of around the 180 mark for an under, which is pretty conceivable. (Bjv even throwing his money on EX-Magpie players!!! :lol) ;)
