FC Copenhagen vs Istanbul Basaksehir

The Europa League is back and it's in very bizarre circumstances. The remainder of the tournament will see the majority of games hosted in Germany across the four destinations of Cologne, Duisburg, Dusseldorf, and Gelsenkirchen. However, we still have some last 16 ties left to resolve at the originally scheduled venues before we crack on with before the Quarter-Finals so here is the first of those when Danish side FC Copenhagen play Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir in a 5:55pm BST kick-off on Wednesday night at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

FC Copenhagen failed to defend their Danish Superliga title on the domestic with the club finishing in 2nd place and 14 points behind newly crowned champions FC Midtjylland. A Quarter-Final exit in the Danish Cup and failure to even reach the Champions League group stages means that Stale Solbakken's men will now want to progress in this competition if they're to avoid seeing this season as anything other than a failure. It's looking tough though. FCK lost the first leg 1-0 and have only won 1 of their 11 competitive European knock-out matches when they've lost the first leg. The fact the team has drawn 2 of their last 3 Europa League home games means they're not exactly flying coming into this game.

Istanbul Basaksehir are still celebrating regaining their Turkish Super Lig title. Okan Buruk's side finished 4 points ahead of 2nd placed Trabzonspor to seal their place in next season's Champions League so anything that comes from this competition will surely be seen as a bonus. Edin Visca's 88th minute penalty was the difference between these two sides in the first leg and it is set to be a similarly tight affair here in Denmark. The club has won 5 of their last 7 matches in this competition and have scored at least one goal in 7 of their 8 matches in the Europa League.

There isn't a lot separating these two sides but it could be a classic case of confidence prevailing. FC Copenhagen will be gutted that they've surrendered their domestic title where as Istanbul Basaksehir will be delighted to regain theirs. Both teams have scored in 5 of the last 8 FC Copenhagen matches in this competition and in 3 of the last 4 of Istanbul Basaksehir's matches in this competition. I can see a draw with both teams scoring in this one.

Shakhtar Donetsk vs Wolfsburg

The second preview of the remaining last 16 matches in the Europa League covers the 5:55pm BST clash on Wednesday night between Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk and German team Wolfsburg at the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kiev. The hosts hold a 2-1 lead from the first leg so it'll be interesting to see if the visitors can manage to pull off a come back to turn the tie on its head.

Shakhtar Donetsk appear to have done the hard work with goals from Moraes and Marcos Antonio ensuring the one goal win was sealed in the first leg away back before lockdown kicked in. Head coach Luis Castro will be aware that the club has been knocked out of two of the previous knockout rounds in European competition having led from the first leg. There is no denying that the home form of the Miners has been incredible having lost just 2 of their last 35 competitive home matches. It was a huge contributing factor to them walking away with the Ukrainian Premier League title this season.

Wolfsburg come into this game needing to score at least two goals to progress due to the two away goals scored by Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg. A solitary goal from John Brooks wasn't enough to avoid defeat back in March and it leaves the Bundesliga side with a mammoth task to save their competition. Head coach Oliver Glasner led his team to a 7th placed finish in the league guaranteeing Europa League competition next season. The team can take inspiration from the fact that they've scored in every single one of their Europa League matches so far this season. The club already has experience of winning in the Ukraine this season after beating FC Oleksandria earlier in the competition but they have also lost both of their previous two European matches ties where they have lost the first leg.

This will be the second meeting between these two clubs but Shakhtar Donetsk have played German clubs on a number of previous occasions. In fact, the Ukrainian club have drawn all 7 of their previous meetings with German clubs at home including three of those matches ending in a 0-0 draw. I think they should win this one though against a Wolfsburg side that could well leave themselves exposed at the back as they try to rescue the tie on away soil.

Inter Milan vs Getafe

The third preview from this round of Europa League games is an interesting one because due to the first leg never being played the tie will be contested in a one-off game at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen in an 8pm BST kick-off on Wednesday night. It's Italian Serie A side Inter Milan versus La Liga club Getafe and there's everything to play for in this match.

Inter Milan finished the season in 2nd place and just 1 point behind league champions Juventus but Antonio Conte's men will be ruing some crucial dropped points that prevented them securing a first Scudetto since 2010. The club know Champions League football is confirmed for next season so this is an opportunity to deliver a major European trophy and reach their first European Quarter-Final since 2010/11. Conte will be wary that Inter don't have a very good record against Spanish opposition having won just 1 of their last 12 matches against Spanish teams and haven't won any since their 3-1 win over Barcelona in the 2009/10 Champions League Semi-Final.

Getafe face a huge challenge here. Head coach Jose Bordalas led his side to an 8th placed finish in La Liga and Europa League football is currently not on for next season. That could change depending on the winners of different competitions but the Community of Madrid side will want to prolong this European journey. It's been a campaign based on defensive solidarity and high press with only Sevilla, Basel, and Manchester United keeping more clean sheets than Getafe in the Europa League this season. Unfortunately, it's been a poor period for the club since the restart having won just 1 of their 11 matches since play began after the covid-19 suspension. It's a run that has also seen them only score 1 goal in their last 6 matches.

I can't see anything other than an Inter Milan win here. Generally, it's been another positive season for Getafe but they're up against one of the best sides in European club competition right now. The defensive stability of Inter might not be as resilient as it was at the start of the season but they're still a solid unit. The fact that Getafe have also been resolute at the back suggests this won't be a thriller. If you're feeling bold then backing a clean sheet win for Inter is decent value.

Manchester United vs LASK

The final preview for Wednesday night's Europa League last 16 ties comes from Old Trafford where Premier League club Manchester United face Austrian Bundesliga side LASK in an 8pm BST start. There will be some wondering what the point is in even playing this game with the home team holding a 5-0 win from the first leg but this will be a unique experience for both sides playing a European competitive game at an empty Theatre of Dreams.

Manchester United have looked like a side that could evolve into potential Premier League title contenders over the coming years with a front three of Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood, and Marcus Rashford leading them to some fine results since the restart. The Red Devils secured qualification to next season's Champions League with a convincing 2-0 win over Leicester on the final day of the season. That made it 7 wins from 11 competitive matches since the restart for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side. If United win this game then it'll be the first time they've reached a European competition Quarter-Final since 2016/17 when they won it under Jose Mourinho.

LASK come into this game essentially on a European away day and nothing more. The odds of them turning this tie around are next to impossible. Manager Valerien Ismael has seen his team finish 4th in the domestic league and this will simply be a case of playing for pride. In contrast to United, LASK have lost 7 of their 11 competitive matches since the restart and have conceded an average of 1.7 goals per game during that run. It's a huge downturn in form having only lost 1 of their last 7 Europa League matches before the 5-0 loss at home to United back in March.

How else can we see this game ending other than in another convincing win for United? Solskjaer could field half a youth side and they'd still get the win. I'm expecting United to field a strong side to keep the players match fit but also to ensure momentum is continued. LASK look short on confidence and results. I think a clean sheet win for United is the sensible bet.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Rangers

The second night of Europa League last 16 action kicks off at 5:55pm BST on Thursday night when Bayer Leverkusen play Rangers in the second leg of their tie at the BayArena. This will be the fourth meeting between these two sides with one win each and a draw coming from those encounters. The hosts have witnessed both teams score in 6 of their last 7 European matches and they have also won whilst conceding in their last three home European games. I think it's very unlikely we'll see Rangers pull this comeback off and they'll do well to take anything from this game on the night.

The second match kicking off at 5:55pm BST on Thursday night in the Europa League is a one-off tie between La Liga team Sevilla and Serie A club Roma at the MSV-Arena in Duisburg. These two sides didn't manage to play their first leg before lockdown kicked in so their two legged affair is now reduced to a one-off match on neutral territory. Who will prevail?

This is one of the more intriguing matches of the tournament. If this game had been played back in March then I'd be backing Sevilla all day long. A lot has changed in those 6 months though and I now feel that this tie could go either way. That is particularly the case on neutral ground. I genuinely can't decide which way this game will go so I'm backing a draw with both teams to score.

FC Basel vs Eintracht Frankfurt

The second batch of kick-offs on Thursday night in the Europa League begin at 8pm BST. Here, we take a look at the first of those when FC Basel play Eintracht Frankfurt at the St Jakob-Park. It is a 3-0 advantage for the home side heading into this second leg so the pressure is all on the away side to pull off an incredible come back to get back into the tie? Is it too much to ask though?

It's basically job done for FC Basel in this clash. Their record at home in this competition is class and you have to expect Eintracht Frankfurt will be throwing everything at the hosts to try and overturn this deficit. I think this could leaves gaps at the back to be exploited by the Swiss side. I think we'll see a fair few goals scored in this match but I think the home side could sneak a win to seal the tie.

Wolves vs Olympiakos

The final game from our coverage of the remaining Europa League last 16 ties this week comes in the 8pm BST kick-off between Premier League side Wolves and Greek Super League club Olympiakos. These two teams battled out a 1-1 draw in the first leg out in Greece back in March so will they end up nullifying each other in this second encounter at Molineux?

Wolves were looking like potential outside contenders to qualify for the Champions League when the restart happened but an inconsistent spell of form to end the season saw Wanderers finish in 7th place and missing out on European competition entirely. Winning this tournament could still see them end up in Europe next season and it would be at Europe's top table. Nuno Espirito Santo's side have won 6 of their 7 home matches in the Europa League this season and have conceded in just 1 of their last 8 home games across all competitions. It is also 5 clean sheets in 9 matches since the restart for the club.

Olympiakos eased to the Greek Super League title this season and having knocked out Premier League side Arsenal in the last 32 of this competition after trailing 1-0 from the first leg they'll feel confident they can take another English scalp. The only problem for Pedro Martins' side is that their away form in Europe isn't the best. In fact, the 2-1 win away to the Gunners was the first win in European competition this season.

I can see Wolves seeing this tie out in business-like fashion. In Santo, they have a manager who knows how to get the job done in Europe. Now that European qualification for next season is no longer possible through the league, Wanderers will be going all out to win this competition and qualify for next season's Champions League. I can see them doing it against an Olympiakos side that have the potential to be dangerous but shouldn't have enough to spring a second surprise in consecutive rounds of the Europa League.
