MCLARKE
This is a reason why singles are better than doubles. You can usually get better prices by using 2 different bookmakers for the singles but with a double you might have to accept worse odds.
The Equaliser
@MCLARKE Well, if one is getting BOG I don't see why backing singles with two different bookmakers should swing the vote in favour of singles. You will have a laugh today when you see that I had three winners and no doubles coupled. I will press on with my strategy but many thanks for your comments. MCLARKE
As an example tomorrow let's assume you want to back Society Star and Flower Power in the 2.30 and 3.00 at Catterick. At the moment best prices are 7/2 for Society Star and 11/4 for Flower Power. As a double this would be 8.63/1. However you cannot get these odds with any singer bookmaker, the best you can achieve is 7/2 and 5/2, this equates to 7.75/1. This reduced your returns by 10% which I suspect would wipe out any edge that you have. Congratulations with your 3 winners, I have no issue with your selection process but over the long term you will make a better return backing them as singles. The Equaliser
@MCLARKE Many thanks and point taken regarding using two bookies with better odds for singles and of course if you get BOG as well then this will produce better results for your singles. I have meant to record the effect of backing singles as well as my doubles. If I get time I will backtrack for September. I am pressing on regardless with my doubles; however, I will choose 5 of my best selections for the £20 challenge and choose 10 mixed doubles to cover all combinations. Have fun, I know I will

MCLARKE
Too true The Equaliser, anyone who think's it is easy to make money betting is in for a rude awakening. I have been betting since the early 80s and it's only the last 10 years or so that I've consistently made profits. On average I make 5% ROI but there are still losing months, July was particularly bad but I recovered those losses in August.
The Equaliser
@MCLARKE Do your place bets make money on their own account? I don't like place betting but I read once that one can make money if place money is put on races with precisely 8 or 9 runners; don't know if this is true? MCLARKE
In terms of the each way bets I make, the place side of the bet makes a profit and the loss side a smaller loss. I don't really see any logic in place bets in 8/9 runner races but if anybody can prove otherwise I'm open minded. MCLARKE
My bets are based on pure mathematics, there is no form study at all. I have a lot more success backing each way than backing to win.
The Equaliser
@MCLARKE Interesting that you do it with no form study at all. Still might be worthwhile taking account of market movements on Oddschecker particularly the night before racing, in the morning and in the run up to the race itself. I know it is difficult to predict which may the betting market might turn but I rather feel that if my selection is being shunned by the market, especially, the ones at shorter odds e.g. 3/1 - 5/1 then someone in the know has the knowledge that the horse will run very poorly despite all the hype in the racing press.
