Yearly update:

 

I started this thread around June time so my results are for about six months.  The idea was to combine fancied horses in doubles and trebles so as to make a profit.  The intention was never for anyone to copy my bets but, with up to in excess of 500 horses running in races on any ones day sometimes just,  for my fellow punters to perhaps have a second look at my selections if they were of interest.  My idea was to prove that one could win money by betting on multiples if one held their nerve and kept to a strategy and didn’t give up when results were not good.  I have been in profit during this period but have dipped slightly below break-even at the end of the year.  I have found this adventure very fascinating with regard to how the horses have run in relation to their market position and media expectations.  I am continually seeking to improve on my selection criteria and am hoping to become more successful in 2020.  I take the point that one can’t cheat the mathematics of probabilities and that perhaps single win bets should, in the end, achieve the same profit as betting on multiples,  however, I love it when my multiples click together and I shall continue with them.  I don’t like putting my money on short-priced favourites.  With the multiples, I started by trying to exclude horses at less than 3/1 and also animals running in Class 6 & 7 races.  I had to change my attitude during the period as it would have meant not having a bet on a number of days throughout the week. I quite often found that didn’t find get a better run out of the so-called higher class animals anyway.  Hence, I decided to include all races and set a minimum price of 2/1 (though I may have dipped a little below that on occasions).  In future, I will stick to the 2/1 minimum criteria and will pass over selections whether they are 15/8 or 7/4.  As pointed out above it is very frustrating to have four winners and just one winning double.  I do like the idea quite of choosing a number of daily selections so I have decided that from now on when I have six or more selections I will combine six of them in 50p full cover bets.  This means 15 doubles for six selections = £7.50 along with my Trixie bets.  5 selections = 10 doubles at 50p = £5.00 or with only 4 selections = 6 doubles at 50p = £3.00.  when I have more than 6 selections I won’t increase the number of full cover double combinations but may break the excess down should they exceed 3 we’ll see.

 

In October I did start to include single bets with a separate bank for them.  I started by saying that I needed a price of at least 4/1 to back them.  This meant I would often not include the same selections that I had in my multiples.  This went OK for a while but seems now to be performing a lot worse than my multiples.  I have sometimes included the same selections as in my multiples but this hasn’t worked out either.  Obviously, I have some ground to make up to get back into profit with the current balance being £359.83 from a £400 bank.  I do like the idea of looking beyond the market leaders in horse races so as to find value and in a way, it seems right to consider more of the runners though it is time-consuming.  I will stick to the minimum price of 4/1 for my singles bets and hope that I will improve on my selection method in 2020.
