Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August liverpool have made some shrewd signings and they have potential to get the champions league place this year. they are quite a few players with great potential. stoke look like relegation team this year. several players have left the club that were key for the team. i see plenty of struggles for them to stay in the league.

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August

liverpool have made some shrewd signings and they have potential to get the champions league place this year.
...and the tooth fairy is real mate. Going for a Liverpool win here as Stoke have Mark Hughes as their manager, and have not signed any big names yet. If Pulis was still in charge I'd have gone for a draw.

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August Liverpool are getting better but continue to be totally overvalued. Last season their 9 wins came against QPR, SPurs, Swansea, Norwich, Sunderland, Fulham,Saints, WIgan and Reading. Top price was spurs at 1.95 but three of the wins came against teams that got relegated. In top 8 v top 8 performance in the premier league, Liverpool won just 1 game out of 14 (7 home and 7 away). Can they overcome this inability to beat any of the top teams this season ? Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August stoke in my opinion are going to go down. they start a season with hughes as new manager which undoubtedly will bring different philosophy. and i don't see them being hard to beat this time round. mark has gained reputation for running teams in recent years and stoke don't look the same anymore. he will probably try to make them play which is a mistake. when stoke play they lose but when they defend they have a lifeline. if i remember right they let go many players that were core part of the squad and i've not heard they brought any quality in to replace them. liverpool win seems pretty certain

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August Thinking this ones more one to watch than bet on. Hard to see from pre-season what kind of start the new lads will get off to for Liverpool as most of there friendlies have been against really poor sides. Difficult to tell if Suarez will play or not either or even if he'll be in the right frame of mind to be playing! As for Stoke, looks as if this season could be a struggle for them, it's going to be a huge transition with Mark Hughes and the 'solid' Stoke we once knew could be no more. At a push i'd go for a home win here but I'm going to leave it betting wise and see how this one unfolds.

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August

I just wonder whether Liverpool will continue to be overvalued. Opposing them for much of last season was pure gold.
So true. I'd lay the Liverpool win here, regardless of how hopeless Hughes is as a manager.

Liverpool have been poor value in the last few years but the wider issue is that on average over the course of the last ten years they've probably still been top four or five. So the odds merely reflect the favouritism awarded to a top four/five/six club versus a bottom half side at home. I think its hard to say one way or the other how Liverpool or Stoke will go this season, without first seeing them competitively. On one hand we have Liverpool who are looking like maybe they're on the up and can challenge for a CL place. On the other we have Stoke who have made a clear statement (for me anyway) that Tony Pulis couldn't take them any further and that they need to change their style of play if they're to progress. One concrete thing I think is that Stoke won't find it easy to change their style to suit new management and there's a slight chance that could backfire if its not done gently. Steve McLaren at Forest as an example - They were shocking as he tried to turn them from a notoriously organized and tough side into an attacking one.

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August I agree with Neil that there's good value in the Stoke/Draw double chance. I don't see Hughes making wholesale changes from the start and believe he'll try and make sure the team is defensively stable, as he did after taking over at Blackburn and City. With that - and the fact Liverpool's one man strikeforce is suspended - in mind, I can't see this being a high scoring game. Under 2.5 has come in 6 of the last 8 times the teams have met, with the last two league games at Anfield being goalless draws. Under 2.5 is available at evens at various bookies, and a few have 0-0 at 12s -- both are worth small plays.

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August "several players have left the club that were key for the team." "if i remember right they let go many players that were core part of the squad and i've not heard they brought any quality in to replace them." As a Stoke fan I can confidently say that this is utter rubbish, no first teamers have left except for a few fringe players such as Whitehead and an over-the-hill Upson and Delap. On the contrary we have kept our best players in Begovic (best keeper in the league), Shawcross and Huth- we still have an extremely solid platform at the back. In addition we have signed the first choice Dutch left back Erik Peters who has 17 caps and Champions League experience with PSV- could be an absolute bargain, think Michu. We've also signed a defender from Barcelona and resigned Jermaine Pennant. We're in for a striker and bidding for Mame Biram Diouf (12 goals in last seasons bundesliga) and Jermaine Defoe (11 league goals from Spurs' bench). It just annoys me when all the doom merchants come in with their sweeping statement about how we are relegation certainties. Look at the quality of players in the squad and add a couple of good additions, then compare it with Palace, Hull, Sunderland, Villa etc. Fair enough I wasn't behind the Hughes appointment and we probably won't make the top half but we should stay up comfortably. As for this game it's been 0-0 3 times and they've won 3 since we joined the prem. Tbh I think we'll lose and anything above 1.5 is value on Liverpool, although I would probably go part stake at the beginning and then top up at a higher price if we are level after 30 or 40 minutes. If we score first before say 60 minutes then I would lay Stoke as I don't really fancy our chances of holding out for a win. The Scousers may back liverpool into a stupid price though and anything below 1.4 becomes a lay to back. Obviously I hope my prediction is totally wrong and I certainly won't be betting on it!

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August Under 2.5 goals 1/1 @ SkyBet - This was a really close call between going for Stoke on the +1.25 Asian Handicap or going for the unders. However, i'm going for the unders here and i'm surprised the price is as high as evens and it should be around 1.8 in my opinion. Stoke will sit back and try to get a 0-0 draw and as we all know they are very tough to break down. On the other hand, in the past few seasons Liverpool are known for struggling to break down teams at Anfield who sit back and defend and have drawn many games 0-0 against lower opposition. Add to the fact that Liverpool will be without Suarez who is banned and obviously he is unsettled which may have an effect on the team. This will be Stoke's first game under Mark Hughes who in my opinion is not as bad a manager as some people make out and i think Stoke will be equally as tough to beat as they were under Pulis. I also don't think they will change their style of play much either as they don't have good enough players to play attractive football in my opinion (Sorry Stoke fans). With Begovic, Huth and Shawcross fit to play i can see Liverpool struggling to break them down. However, Stoke are known for not scoring a lot of goals and they managed just 34 goals last season (0.9 goals per game) which was the second worst in the league beaten only by QPR (30). Stoke's away scoring record is even worse, scoring just 13 goals in 19 games (0.69 goals per game) so i think Liverpool are likely to keep a clean sheet on Saturday. That would mean Liverpool will have to score 3 against Stoke for the unders 2.5 to lose and i struggle to see that happening. Good Luck everyone :hope

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August Sorry sajtion, I didn't mean that you were lying or anything, it's just that of those players only Whitehead actually played in the first team, the others were just dead wood which we needed to get off the wage bill and Pennant has re-signed. Overall we still have a very good defence but haven't yet signed the attacking players we need

I reckon the best way to go in this match is NO to BTTS Liverpool led the Premier league in this stat at Home last season at 68% with a division leading 11 cleansheets (58%). To me this is a stronger Liverpool team in mid-field, and given the extra protection the back 4 will concede even fewer goals this season. I also did not realise that Liverpool signed Kolo Toure, which is going to give them a rock solid base to repel the set-piece ball. Liking the NO BTTS more and more. This Stoke team looks terrible, and maybe they get pounded (even without Suarez). Surely Liverpool will also address their terrible goal scoring record in the 1st 15 minutes (1 goal in 19 home games last season), and have a change of attitude ! I prefer the NO BTTS at 1.62 bet365 to under 2.5 , because if Liverpool do score early this could turn into a 3-0 or 4-0 beating. I said maybe Stoke double chance is the way to go earlier ( will add that to a long shot accumulator bet), but my real feeling is that Liverpool won't concede a goal.

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August Probably won't touch this one, certainly not in terms of 1X2, however I do think that the value would lie in the direction of Stoke if you are brave enough to touch this. As mentioned before Liverpool tend to have shorter odds purely based on reputation. Neilovans post about no BTTS does seem interesting, here are the H2H results between the two clubs in recent meetings Season|Liverpool|Stoke 12/13|0|0 11/12|0|0 10/11|2|0 09/10|4|0 08/09|0|0 * League results only Since Stoke were promoted to the PL, all 5 appearances have seen NO BTTS satisfied. Stoke have not scored at Anfield in any of these meetings, however there were 3 bore draws, so it doesn't exactly favor Liverpool in a 1X2 perspective.

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August Liverpool v Stoke Correct Score 0-0 @ 12/1 Bet365, Skybet, VC Under 2.5 goals @ Evens Bet365, Skybet, Paddy Charlie Adam Anytime scorer @ 8/1 Paddy (Or 1st Scorer @ 22/1, Stake returned if Liverpool win the game) Still not convinced this Liverpool team is going to threaten the top 4 this season. With the fiasco surrounding Suarez and the Stoke players keen to impress the new boss I this game could just fizzle out a bit and turn in to a goalless draw at Anfield. Bookies have made a meal out of the Liverpool pre-season and are really overating them IMO just as they did last season which must have cost them big time, Liverpools friendly wins were against Preston, Valerenga, Melbourne and Olympiakos which with no disrespect, are all pretty poor teams. Liverpool should create a few chances but with no Suarez I can't see them scoring many, if any at all. Moving on to Stoke I also think they'll struggle this season and could be potential relegation candidates, Hughes is a completely different manager to Pulis and this could ruin all the hard work and the ethic that Pulis used to bring out the best in them, with no real signings to speak of I think they'll struggle for goals badly this season. I've also taken Adam at 8's on Paddy to score anytime which is looking pretty good value to me as he's offered at 5's and 6's elsewhere, He's there main set piece taker and is always capable of scoring, he'll be even more keen to show his old club what they are missing out on.

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August Bet: Under 2.5 goals at 2.1 (pinnaclesports) stake 2/10 All sorts of reasons for this bet covered by others above but in summary:

  • Early kick off
  • Opening day
  • Liverpool a possession side, dont always put weaker teams to sword
  • Not expecting Stoke to show any firepower under Hughes
  • Suarez out
  • Aspas is a 2nd striker I like a lot and Sturridge having a field day is the obvious danger, but it may take time for Liverpool to hit the straps so happy to take under 2.5 at a decent odds against price.

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August Stoke have never scored a goal at Anfield from 5 attempts in the Premier League but I put that down mainly to Tony Pulis and his sheer negativity when playing away from home. I do feel Mark Hughes is going to be a bit defensive tomorrow, but you can be sure he will tell his players to have a go and Peter Crouch should be able to cause problems for the Liverpool defence. With Sturridge not fully fit he is still likely to play and with Suarez out of action Liverpool could find things tough against Stoke. It will be interesting to see how Kolo Toure fits in at centre back and it could take him time to settle in. Since the departure of Reina, there will be pressure on Mignolet and he could feel a lot of pressure from Stoke's set pieces with Crouch and Huth in the box. I think Mark Hughes has nothing to lose in this game really so I don't think he is going to set up his team ultra-defensive. The reason they got rid of Tony Pulis was to get rid of the boring, predictable, hoof it style football so Mark Hughes definitely has to have a go here tomorrow at Anfield and if so I can really see Stoke getting a few chances regardless of the end result. Liverpool Clean Sheet? NO - 5 Points @ 2.00 Betfair

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August 4pts Liverpool to win to nil 6/5 Paddy Power I like Liverpool’s prospects this season and I think they have a chance of going well in this match particularly. Stoke don’t really carry the sort of goal threat you should need to break down a Liverpool side of this quality and most of the game will be played in Stoke’s half so not only do I think Liverpool have the creativity to win this match but also they have the defensive abilities to win to nil. Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August Liverpool vs Stoke over 3.5 gol at 3.2 There are loads of good posts written here and pretty convincing for a low scoring match it has to be said. But on instinct I feel this will be high scoring; at least over 3.5 I really do think Stoke, without Pulis, will be happy to be free of the defensive shackles that plagued them last season. Sure it might be efficient but it was damn boring. Hughes is not a defensive manager and is still likely to be seeing what his best team in these early games. A lot of people have said Stoke’s defenders, specifically the central defenders are solid, but are they really? Or did they just look good in Pulis 9-1-0 formation for every away game last season? I feel there is a good opportunity this will be brutally exposed tomorrow, against a pacey yet raw Liverpool attack, especially as they will no way play as defensive as they did under Pulis. Also, I’m not too concerned that Suarez is out, the attack seemed more fluid and penetrating without him last season for Pool. Good luck whatever you play :cigar

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August there is no way this match is going to be under as liverpool will make a strong start with their new players. this year is all about the champions league place and with the first game at anfield liverpool should score at least solid three goals and set the benchmark for the year ahead. their pre-season friendly was very positive and effective. there is a feeling of big ambition from liverpool and i think rodgers has done well in transfer market. i think his playing philosophy will finally kick in with the players and i expect big performance

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August Whoscored.com Best Rated Player: Coutinho at 6/1 with Betvictor This is essentially a Man of the Match bet and I believe 6/1 isn't a bad price actually. Though a price that's common for a favourite in this market, Coutinho in my opinion deserves to be ranked as favourite (actually, he's jont favourite with Sturridge and Gerrard). If Coutinho carries on from where he left off last season (and pre-season form suggests he will) and stays free of injury then Coutinho will be amazing this year. Most of Liverpool's attacking play will involve Coutinho one way or another - his vision and ability to match that vision with sublime passing/through balls is outstanding. The only downside is LFC will almost certainly be fighting off rival clubs who will bid for him come the end of the season. * With LFC at home against Stoke the emphasis will be on attack (suits Coutinho's game) * Joint favourite Sturridge hasn't been great pre-season as he's just come back from injury so may need more time for a top performance * Other joint favourite Gerrard will most likely be a bit more defensive this year than before - not a defensive player per se, just less likely to go on forward runs like he did in seasons gone by * Stoke will probably try to keep things tight and Coutinho represent's LFC's best chance of creating a defence-splitting pass. As I say, considering the above, I'm happy to back Coutinho today.

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August 0-0 first half @3.4 stoke are obviously not able to shoot goals at anfield and scored there just once in last 12 competitive games. i expect the similar story today. liverpool are slow starters traditionally so goalless first half could be an option here. i think under is also quite probable result and i expect 1-0, 0-0 or 2-0 outcome today. gl

Re: Liverpool v Stoke City - Sat 17th August Danny sturridge to score first between 21-45 11/1. Expect a tight first 20 with stoke not wanting to give anything away. But Liverpool could create some early chanced through countinho and sturridge could capitalise to score the first goal of the season.
