  1. Re: Panorama: BBC1 9pm

Think Billy Hills, Fintron etc. had better be a little more careful of what they say. O.k. it did not look good for Mr. Lynch, but this was a programme that only put one view, that of the prosecution. It was not a fair analysis surely. Fact is they were found NOT GUILTY, or rather NO CASE TO ANSWER, and that should be enough to satisfy anyone. Trial by TV is no trial at all. Ginge
What they were found 'not guilty' of was race-fixing. The programme went out of it's way to make it absolutely clear that they were NOT accusing the jockeys and others of 'race-fixing'. They were accusing them of something they HADN'T stood trial for.........ie, passing insider information to people who used it to lay horses.
  2. Re: Panorama: BBC1 9pm

The stats are quite clear that the case was never going to stand up in court, and I had to laugh that they said after every race they showed: "There is no evidence to say the jock did anything to throw the race" :loon WTF was the point in showing it then.
They 'had' to say that of course because the jocks have been found 'not guilty' of race fixing in Court. The jocks were only accused of 'race fixing', they weren't accused in court of passing on insider info, which as far as I'm aware, isn't a criminal offence in horse racing like it is in the City. So the gist of this programme was that the jocks weren't 'fixing' races, they were just telling their contacts that horse A wasn't really fit enough to win that day or had had a minor injury setback etc, etc........and on the basis of that insider info the contacts laid the horse. That isn't a criminal offence, as far as I know, but it is a 'racing offence' under the jurisdiction of the BHA I don't think they provided enough evidence for 'corruption' ie that the jockeys were being paid to supply such information, although I did think the evidence was fairly strong that the jocks were passing on info.......to people they perceived to be their friends. I don't know how you could stop that in reality.........jock goes out for dinner with friends, the talk turns to tomorrow's racing........it seems pretty natural that the jock might say, 'oh, I'm on one of Mr Hannon's but i don't think it's fit enough to win'......... Sounds like that was what fallon was doing and most of the time he was right, but he still won on some of them ! Unfortunately I did doze off for 20 minutes mid-programme and missed most of the bit about Bennett, .........was there any convincing evidence of payments being made to jocks ? The evidence I saw was all circumstantial and no doubt the general public will say 'smoke, fire' but the racing authorites would need proper evidence
  3. Re: Best Bet Of The Day ~ Sunday 27th Ascot 2.15 - Young Mick - win Back on his favourite stamping ground with 4 C/D wins to his name. Second last time in the Old Newton Cup, usually runs in these big handicaps, looks like he's coming back to form and wouldn't need to run much better than LTO to win. Hopefully the return to Ascot will bring about that few lengths improvement.

  4. Re: Best Bet Of The Day - Sat 26/7/08 Ascot 3.40 - Jedburgh - EW Hasn't won for a while, now dropped down into the 80s in the handicap and signs of a return to form last time out with a 3rd in a big field in the Royal Ascot 7 furlong handicap ( Brittania) Has won before in huge fields, needs a bit of cover and comes late, needs a bit of luck in running. 7 furlongs on firm ground is ideal It's a competitive handicap and he is 28/1 at the moment, but I need a couple of big 'uns to get up the table.........

  5. Re: Best Bet Of The Day ~ Friday 25th Newmarket 6.40 - Meyden Groove to Win Won a seller last time out which gets it rated around 65-70 However it did win by 7 lengths which suggests it might be better than your average seller winner, in which case it could be well in. After the seller it was bought back for 15,000 guineas so somebody likes it........... Trainer had a winner yesterday And most of all.........it's dam is 'In The Groove' who was a smashing racehorse a few years ago............I remember her well.

  6. Re: King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes - 26/07/08 No three year olds running No fillies or mares running.... What do we reckon ?.......are there just too many Group One races now over 10/12F in the first half of the season ?.......all the top horses can avoid each other and still win a Group One. Not just that but with travelling so much easier now the whole of Europe is 'home territory' for plundering group one races........ eg.........O'Brien could have run Soldier of Fortune here but no.........send him to Paris for their mid season 12F G1......... Then the three year old Derby types who should be running here also went to France for that race Montmartre won last week It just seems that every year there's a new 10/12F G1 race in early season/mid-summer.......... Since I've been away for a dozen years the Prince of Wales is now a group one, never used to be, the Gold Cup at the Curragh, the Pretty Polly, GP de St Cloud as well as the old established ones Are we ever going to see the King George as the mid-summer 'Arc' ever again ?

  7. Re: King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes - 26/07/08 At first glance I'm intrigued by the pace aspect. Even if the Duke gets 12F what we know for sure is that he looks unbeatable over 10/11F, so a slow pace will almost certainly ensure his victory. Are the O'Brien pacemakers there to slow the pace down ? If so......who might take them on and ensure a good gallop Lucarno could do that........a slow run race wouldn't benefit him. Could he 'steal' it from the front like he did at Mewmarket a couple of weeks ago ?

  8. Re: Best Bet Of The Day Saturday ~ 19/07/08 Newb 3.25 - Finnegan McCool - EW 20-odd two year olds over 5F........it's a bit of a lottery, but I quite like the look of this one. He's won over 5F but gets 6F which could count if, as expected, the race is run at a furious pace. He's 'top-weight' in the auction stakes, which means he cost the most at the sales and hopefully means he's a better type than the lower weighted ones. Trainer - R Beckett - is pretty good with his two year olds, places them well. Drawn high........looking at the pace chart there's early speed high and low, undoubtedly the field will split into at least two groups. There seems to be more pace 'high' and hopefully they'll drag him to the last half furlong where he can swoop with his 6F stamina...........

  9. Re: ATR - Who are we? Hello folks I've been here a while now, so it's about time I introduced myself I'm in my 50s, self employed, which in the current economic climate gives me plenty of time to devote to the horses, but no money to bet with........:unsure I came late to racing. Was in my early 30s and having a weekend away, looking for something to fill the time before going to Footy and a mate suggested having a bet on the TV races..... Gradually became hooked over the next few years Equine heroes from those days - Dancing Brave, Suave Dancer, Generous, Pebbles........and all those forgotten ones who brought up 50p EW doubles....... My best ever win was at york one of the years Ezzoud won the International.......I had the first three up on a yankee, couple at big odds, won about £ 500.........all the bets were going on to a 25/1 shot in the nursery..........all i need say is that if it was today, that last one would have been my BBotD..........:wall In 1996 I left my job to become self-employed and gave up betting to save some money, gradually lost interest in the horses without betting. That lasted until last year when work began to decline and I seemed to have a lot of spare time. I also got the racing channels on tv with the sports package at around that time..........started watching to fill the afternoons............hey ho, here we go..........back into it again ! Never was much of a bettor, 50p Yankee merchant.......and I don't feel the need to bet these days, so after losing about £ 50 over six months I gave up again. Haven't had a bet since Aintree........... I've always picked something to specialise in every year, can't cope with the amount of racing. Currently I'm looking at Group One races in Europe after a couple of months banging my head against the sprint handicap brick wall On my comeback to the sport I'm amazed at how much info is available on the net and having 2 dedicated racing channels...........it's heaven. Or is it Hell ?............:unsure

  10. Re: Best Bet of the Day ~ Wednesday 16 July. Leop 6.30 Chintz - Win I see cc75 has beat me to it, but I'll go ahead anyway. Smashing run last time out when brought back to 6 furlongs for a listed race. The winner was a right old speedball and Chintz was taken off her feet a bit but rallied to pull 6 lengths clear of the others. Return to 7 furlongs should help. Won her maiden over course and distance beating horses from the Weld, Oxx and Bolger yards into the places. D Wachman - not a trainer I've heard much of but it can't be easy taking on O'Brien, Weld, Oxx and co for domestic Irish races. He had 3 winners in decent races over the weekend, so the stable is in cracking form

  11. Re: Best Bet Of The Day | Monday 14th July Longchamp 7.20 - Cima de Triomphe EW Group One Grand Prix de Paris on Bastille Day..........but I'm looking past the french horses. Prospect Wells was my first pick but he's down at about 3/1 favourite on the Zeturf site, so I only fancied him at 10/1 as he was on the English odds..........not at 3/1 There's a few English/Irish Derby runners here - Curtain Call, Alessandro Volta, Bashkirov, Doctor Fremantle, Centennial.........but I'm looking past them as well. They've all had a go at one or two Derbies and proved themselves not good enough to win My fellow won the Derby Italiano, Well, I hear you say, that might be Group One but we all know that Italian Group One races are only 'really' group 2...........OK, fair enough. But that still still puts him on a par with the others.........only Curtain Call and Prospect Wells have won at group two level. My selection is a good looking scopey type, apparently, who quickened nicely to win the Italian derby. There's some sort of form line through Bougoureau of Chapple-Hyam. He was beaten about 10 lengths in the Epsom Derby and more recently half a lentgh in the Listed Bahrain trophy at the July Meeting last week. My fellow beat him 7 lengths in the Italian Derby

  12. Re: Best Bet of the Day ~ Saturday 12 July. York - 3.15 - Charlie Tokyo - EW Had a quick look through the runners for the big race tomorrow..... With heavy ground I'm looking for a lightly weighted one and settled on Charlie Tokyo Last July he won a 17 runner, class 2, 9 furlong handicap at York on Heavy going off a handicap mark of 92 and carrying 8-12 Since then he's been up in the 100s and running in group/listed/handicaps without success..........back down to 95 now ( and a good 'lad' taking 3 lb off, the same 'lad' who rode him last year)...........back at York, back on heavy going, back in about about the same place in the handicap ( 8-9) Can see him running a big race !

  13. Re: Newmarket ~ Friday 11 July. 3.10 Kingsgate Native Assuming no downpour I reckon this fellow has everything going for him. The 3YO look a top bunch of sprinters this year with Equiano and Kingsgate Native winning the 2 Group One sprints held so far in Europe and Fleeting Spirit/Ancien Regime winning other group races So straightaway, I'm inclined to the three year olds.........and of the three in the race, Kingsgate is the one with the group one winning form, we know he's fit and in form and he beat most of these just two weeks ago. He ticks all the boxes Given the ascendancy of the 3YO I reckon you could do worse than back Kingsgate to win with 'savers' on Sir Gerry and Fat Boy for the places. As for the favourite........the French horse, well he needs the rain to come before the race, so let's hope it's a case of 'aprés moi la deluge'..........:lol

  14. Re: Newmarket ~ Friday 11 July. 4.20 Motor Home Looks fairly well in for his nursery debut...... Ran in a couple of decent maidens won by horses who've ran in group races since before breaking his duck over 7 furlongs at Thirsk The general opinion is that you look at the topweights in nurseries and this one is third from the top. The two above him look to have been rated on early season form which can be suspect because none of the better horses have run Clinching factor is the paddock review on the B2YOR site which has Motor Home as the best looking, the most mature, the biggest and strongest.........a good big 'un should beat some average little 'uns.......:clap ps.......even with a couple of non runners he's still showing as 12/1 so worth an EW

  15. Re: Best Bet of the Day ~ Friday 11 July. Newm 3.10 - Kingsgate Native - 1 point to win The 3 year olds look a top crop of sprinters this year, wiping the floor with their elders in the all-aged Group sprints.......Kingsgate Native himself, Equiano, Fleeting Spirit, Ancien Regime etc etc...........so I wouldn't be looking beyond one of the 3 three year olds to win this. Kingsgate Native ticks all the boxes........he's 3, he's a Group One winner (twice), he's fit and he's in form........and he beat most of these only 2 weeks ago Just hope there isn't a deluge at Newmarket...............that would count against him with several of his rivals holding the edge in stamina

  16. Re: Best Bet Of The Day - Weds 09/07/08 3.10 Newm - Infallible - 1 point to win With darjina out this is a totally different race to the one I spent all morning studying........ I now think Infallible will win off a slow pace set by the pacemaker and she'll have too much speed in a sprint finish for the others. Finsceal is the class horse left, but you worry about that last run and her record last year when she faded away after a spring campaign

  17. Re: Newmarket 9/7 3.10 Falmouth Stks Oh well, Darjina is running - and the race times from the first couple of races point to the going still being 'good'........ So, it's Darjina for me. Class filly in the race. Has beaten Finsceal Beo all four times they have met and FB is the second best horse in the race Darjina hasn't won for a while but has been on a run of finishing second in top races, each time being beaten by a colt. Great chance back against the 'weaker' sex.........she acts on any going, despite the trainer saying she wants it firm. She also probably now could step up to 10F, so the uphill finish should suit her down to the ground, whereas it might catch out a couple of dubious stayers like Infallible and Nahoodh Majestic Roi looks to have lost her way since winning the Sun Chariot last year........but ran OK last time under a G1 penalty Don't know about the NZ horse.........maybe the announcement of her retirement suggests that they realise she's over the top now ? I can't see 'Heaven Sent' suddenly becoming a Group One horse at the age of 5. She looks listed class and the RP made a point after her Group win at Ascot that the race had a listed class feel to it. None of the others look to be up to this.........though I love old Clive Brittain and his 'tilting at windmills'........I'd be pleased to see Love of Dubai sneak into 3rd at 100/1........

  18. Re: Newmarket 9/7 This rain is a right b*gger, isn't it..........:@ You just know the ground will get softer and softer during the day and there's going to be loads of late non-runners..........completely going to mess up the card..........

  19. Re: Newmarket 9/7 I haven't come up with a selection yet, but a couple of things I notice from looking at the Falmouth field........... Firstly the 'Cheveley Park' lot have got 3 runners........Heaven Sent, Infallible and Hip..........the latter appears to be a 80s rated handicap type who's obviously there as a pacemaker. I'm guessing that the idea is to get to the front and slow it down as there is a stamina doubt about both the other two in a true run mile. If that tactic is successful, I'd fancy Infallible to beat the others in a sprint finish Second.........couldn't help but note that Clive Brittain had the 50/1 winner a couple of years ago with a 3YO that had followed the same path as Love Of Dubai........Italy, Germany, Coronation Stakes, then here........could lightning strike twice ?............:loon

  20. Re: Best Bet Of The Day - Mon 7/7/08 4.15 Muss - Just The Lady - 1 point to win She owes me one as I've put her up a couple of times when she lost then when I gave up on her she duly won the next 2..........:wall She's no more than selling/claiming class but in that grade she's a real speedball, flying out the stalls and running as fast as she can to the line. Nothing fancy with this one. A sharp 5 like Musselburgh should suit her style..........see if the others have time to get going and catch her. Looks a poor race anyway
