  1. Re: Beverley 27/05/09 7.20 The two I've picked out in the Hilary Needler are both drawn 'low', Azif and Existentialist. Stalls 4 and 1. I've picked them on the basis of their RPR and topspeed ratings together with the stamina level of their breeding compared to previous winners of the race. All the write ups say you have to be drawn high............especially in a big field. So..........going to watch the race and see how they get on from their unfavourable draws. If either gets placed, could be a sign that they're pretty good. And if they both get thrashed............it'll be down to the draw !........:lol

  2. Re: Best bet of the day 26th May 2.00 Leic - Aisla Carmel - win Ran a nice race on debut in a decent loking Newbury maiden Channon's two year olds often come on well for a run and this one wouldn't need to come on much to win today. Always a bit dicky with these two year old maiden races 'cos you've no idea how good the newcomers are, and we have runners here from the Cecil and Meehan yards. Both of those are not noted for first time out two year old winners these days, so I'll take a chance that experience will count for Channon's filly

  3. Re: Best bet of the day 25th may Goodwood 3.10 - Halicarnassus - EW Formerly a good horse a couple of years ago, winning group 2, group 3 and listed races. Bit infuriating since then as he flatters to deceive that he's still got it. A couple of wins this year and a decent 2nd last time out make me think he still might be competitive at Listed level. If he is, then he has conditions to suit him today - smallish field with some front runners, good to firm ground, 10 furlongs and a course he's won on before He's in the last chance saloon.............:unsure BTW - 3.10 is the racecard time, but racing is delayed at Goodwood following a serious accident on the infield, races might be delayed by half an hour.

  4. Re: Best Bet Of The Day ~ Sunday 24th 3.05 The Curragh - Thewayyouare - 2 point win supernap. Has won on soft going, has won at group one level Ran a terrific race last time in the Ganay. After nearly a year off and switching stables and countries he was right there at the front of the race before fading in the last furlong. Still finished 4th against race fit rivals. The 'Post' reported that he was found wanting for stamina over the Ganay trip, which is the same as today, but I'm not sure. I think maybe he just needed a run, as many of O'Briens early season runners did......... With only 5 runners today I can't see this being run at breakneck speed, so reckon he should get home ok The other group one winner in the field is Lush Lashes, a super horse, but she was well beaten on her seasonal debut last year on soft ground Moiqen and Famous Name don't look good enough at this level, though Famous name does act on the going. Casual Conquest looks the main danger but he hasn't got any form on soft going. If he acts on it he should go well as he looks like an out and out stayer.

  6. Re: The FTTS E/W Lucky 15. Off the bench........... I'll go for Lahaleeb in the Irish 1000 gns, 3.45 The Curragh Tough filly, not top class, but likes the ground and is a battler. Won the 'Fred Darling' on soft ground at Newbury but had no chance at Newmarket on firm going. Guts and tenacity to make up for a lack of class...........:hope

  7. Re: Best bet of the day 23/05/09 Newm 2.20 - Father Time - win Finished third in the Lingfield Derby Trial, the fourth has come out and won easily a few days ago. That trial was a patchy race with O'Brien's runner getting an easy lead and the others chasing him with a furlong or two to go. Father Time showed good acceleration to get close to the winner and hopefully today will use that speed to win the race rather than to chase something else. He struggled a bit on the downhill parts of Lingfield and went wide round the bend. Today's track should suit him better.

  8. Re: Best Bet Of The Day - Friday 2.55 - Newmarket - Baylini - win Long losing run of 21 races...........:loon Drops down to class 4 after 9 runs in Class 1 Listed and Class 2 Handicaps. She's been placed in 4 of those races, usually at big odds........and generally the pattern is the same. She gets held up and comes with a late rattle but doesn't quite get to the winner. With just 6 runners today, 1 front runner, 4 prominent runners and Baylini, together with the drop in class and the falling handicap mark, this represents her best chance of victory for a long time. The drop back to 10 furlongs will suit after 2 disappointing runs at 12 furlongs, I think todays track will suit her with the uphill finish hopefully slowing the leaders down as she makes her run from the rear.........and with only 6 runners on the vast expanse of Newmarket Heath she must get a run, surely she can't be blocked in ! If 'Frank' was riding it could be a super-nap............:tongue2

  9. Re: Best Bet Of The Day ~ Thursday Good 4.00 - Moneycan'tbuymelove. - win On the form book this is a 'no contest'.........Copperbeech was 3rd in the Group One Marcel Boussac with this year's French 1000 Gns winner just half a length in front of her. Rock solid form. But the Godolphin lot have been a bit in and out and her form is on soft ground. Seasonal debut as well...........there's enough doubt there not to want to take a short price. Moneycan'tbuymelove has had 2 outings this season, First up an excellent run behind Neeham and Monitorclosely in that zillion pound sales race at the Craven meeting........noted starting slowly, finding trouble in running and finishing strongly Next up - 3rd in a Listed race, also at newmarket behind Take The Hint and Three Moons. Reading the race reports I get the feeling she's needed a couple of runs to get back in the swing of things and could be ready now to strike. Pretty good odds today, around 6/1 or 7/1.......presumably because Spencer is riding a horse that has found trouble in running..........obviously a recipe for disaster, but I'll take the chance............:lol

  10. Re: Does anyone use SportingLife anymore?

Does no one use the timeform website' date=' it's what I use to quickly find a race I'm interested in before I look a bit more in depth using the post. [/quote'] I used to use the Timeform site a lot when they had the 'Timeform Comment' on the last run of every runner...........but since they replaced that with the more general 'Timeform Says' there's nothing on that site that isn't on the Life or Post..........and there are certain important things missing, eg on the horses form page it doesn't give the Class of races that they've run or the Distance Beaten............you have to go into each individual race result to see those details. That would take forever in a 16 runner handicap !
  11. Re: BBOTD 20th May 3.25 Goodwood - Sight Unseen - win A few people have gone for this one, ..........to be honest, that normally puts me off...........:lol But it's the only race I've looked at properly today so I reckon I have to pick something or I've wasted my time...........:lol Cecil's colt was quite impressive winning a Newbury maiden with a couple of subsequent winners behind. Then went to the group 3 race at Chester and ran pretty well against a couple of O'Brien hotpots. I put up the 25/1 winner that day and I fancy him (Golden Sword) EW for the Derby at big odds as well............so on that basis, Sight Unseen ran a good race. He was the first horse to chase after the leader and petered out a bit, overtaken by a few that had been held up longer. Hopefully today he can save his big effort for the finish of the race rather than wasting it trying to catch a runaway leader a couple of furlongs from home. Alwaary is nicely bred and was expensive, but run pretty poorly at Lingfield. The Queen's horse is drifting in the market and will probably be given a tender ride today after his injury. The Godolphin runner is a bit of an unknown quantity but Beauchamp Xerxes showed promise in a Chester Maiden and could go well.

  12. Re: Goodwood 20/5/09 2.15 - Lady Rusty - EW Bit of a speculative one, this......... I remember putting this one up on it's racecourse debut last year and it finished 3rd at about 16/1 At the time I was looking at the two year old races and had noticed that the trainer, P Winkworth, had had a little run of big priced placers on racecourse debut............ After that 3rd at Windsor she came here to Goodwood and won a maiden Then she ran in a nursey on firm ground and finished 4th. Has been dropped 3 lbs today. Firm ground didn't seem to suit her and hopefully there won't be any jar in the ground today. In her 3 races to date she's shown good battling qualities and with the course win to her name, might have an EW squeak.

  13. Re: Overdose ruled out of Ascot Yeah........what a shame........ Won't forget the day of the Abbeye.........there was a Hungarian poster on another forum and this was his 'big day'.........he was so excited he was on the verge of bursting.......... And then the awful let-down of the farce........... I was hoping Overdose would come over and blitz the field just for the sake of that lad..............

  14. Re: Does anyone use SportingLife anymore? I use it as my first port of call to look at the days racing........it's so much quicker to load and navigate than the Post I've bookmarked the Racecards page and go straight there without going through the main site - quickly see what all the races are at all the meetings on one page, how many runners, non-runners (the Post doesn't seem to show non-runners on the actual raxcecards !) I think the little write-ups under each race are much better than the equivalent 'Verdict' on the Post. I like the feature under the racecard where they show brief details of the 'last run' of each horse. Once I've decided which races to look at I click on each of the horses names to get the form summary ad quickly glance through to see going preferences, classes run in etc -again this loads so much quicker than the Post horse form pages' I lke the feature on the 'horse form page' where you can sort previous runs by Going, Course etc I use the Life site for quick checking of results........it's a lot quicker than the Post at getting the result up, and the result appears on the same page as the racecard which is handy I use it for first look at 48 hour decs and 5 day entries.........again they get them up much quicker than the Post and are much easier to navigate. Basically I love the Life site and think it's terrific for what I use it for. But.........and there's always a but !...........the number of errors means that for final study you have to go to the Post. The information on the Life database just isn't reliable enough. I have actually e-mailed them once to tell them that they missed a race out completely from the results database..........it was a handicap at Salisbury. It didn't show up against any of the runners names. Within a day they had added it Wrong ORs........as Fin has mentionned, that's a particular bugbear. They don't add on penalties to the horses mark. They show a horse as having won off 80 whereas in fact it was carrying a penalty and won off 86. Sometimes they just plain have the wrong number for no apparent reason. I saw one race where they had just taken 20 off the mark of every horse in the race ! God knows why !

  15. Re: Best Bet Of The Day ~ Sunday 17th 3.20 - Longchamp - Curtain Call - win Won a group 3 in ireland a few weeks ago on soft/heavy ground and the ground has come right for it this afternoon over in france. Was a pretty good horse last year, well fancied for the Derby, but was a bit diappointing. That run in Ireland saw a change of tactics whereby he made most of the running and made it a test of stamina on soft ground. He gets further than this 9/10 furlongs and hopefully the idea today will be to take the sting out of the speedier horses on the soft ground. He's probably not a genuine group one horse, but then apart from Goldikova, this isn't a genuine group one race. Goldikova - will she be fully would up for her seasonal debut when there's lots of big races to come this summer ? I think a good pace over this trip on soft ground might find her out if she's not 100%. I quite fancy Loup Breton as well, but he's a bit frustrating, he usually runs well, but doesn't win very often. His second in the Ganay looks pretty good, probably his best ever run, so he might still be improving. On good ground I would have gone for Never on Sunday.

  16. Re: Best bet of the day - Sat 16/5/09 Newbury 2.40 - Virtual - win Only has a length to find on Paco Boy from their last meeting at Sandown a couple of weeks ago Virtual will definitely get the mile on soft ground - he's won at 10 furlongs. Has to be a doubt about Paco Boy getting a mile on soft ground......at least a lengths worth of doubt ! At the relative odds I'll take the chance on Virtual reversing placings and you'd have to think that anything that beats Paco Boy is going to win......

  17. Re: York - Fri 15/5/09 Yorkshire Cup 2.40 - Washington Irving - EW Still 8 runners left. Assuming no more pull out this could be a decent EW pick at pretty big odds This time last year Washington Irving was the Ballydoyle front runner for the Derby and went off odds-on favourite in the Derrinstown Stud Derby trial.......... He got beat in that, still finished 5th in the Derby, then appeared to go downhill and was got rid of to J Howard Johnson, for whom he has his first run today. He obviously has some innate talent to be so highly regarded by the O'Brien outfit...........will enjoy the rain-softened ground and first time out might be the best time to catch him if he's gone of the game.......... Ask will probably win though...........

  18. Re: Best bet of the day - Thurs 14/5/09 Newm 8.00 - Patricians Glory - win Had some decent form last year, winning a maiden then placing 3rd in a group 3 race. With a couple of the more fancied ones pulling out of tonight's race he could have a good chance (though it's ruined his odds, obviously !) Changed stable over the winter and his new mob had a first time out winner a few days ago, and he won his first race at 2, so hopefully fitness won't be a problem.

  19. Re: York - Thurs - 14/05/09 I haven't made any selections yet, just having my first look....... But blimey.........there's some fancy big prices in the Dante........:loon Looking at the 'latest odds' on the Life....... 16/1 - Black Bear Island 18/1 - Monitor Closely 15/2 - Redwood 12/1 - Sans Frontieres I reckon any of those could win/place...........:unsure
