  1. Re: Flat Racing - 13th Jan Not too keen on tomorrow's Southwell card .........there's a couple of really short priced favourites that i couldn't back but wouldn't want to oppose This is the one I've gone for in BBotD......... Southwell 3.00 - The Lock Master - win at 7/1 BOG with Bet365 This horse has chased home the highly impressive Dubai Hills on his last 2 outings at respectful distances of 13 lengths and 8 lengths - but he's getting closer ! Take that hotpot out and he could be coming here looking for a hat trick He clearly acts on the track and should be suited by stepping back to 8 furlongs today. In both those races against Dubai, over 7F, he ran on to take second place late in the race Now it could be that the other horses had burned themselves out trying to keep up with Dubai - the Nacarat Syndrome ? - but my impression from watching those races was that the pace was normal until Dubai whooshed away in the straight and the others just ran their normal race and didn't chase after him The lock master's only win came at 8 furlongs on the AW at dundalk and he's now on a 4 lb lower mark. His 2 speed figs behind Dubai are both better than any of the last 2 figs of any of the other horses. Basically he's been running faster than them even tho' he's been thrashed by many lengths. Quick round up of the others......... Ace of spies - a mile will test his stamina, prob won't stay Bentley - career best needed after 87 career runs, unlikely Exopuntia - looks held now after wins in lower grade French Art - not sure to act track, wins on poly and g/f turf Ubenkor - looks held, keeps going up for placed runs Lakeman - the danger ! In good nick, acts on the track I posted it early 'cos i thought 7/1 looked too good to miss - it was 8/1 when I started typing and it's 6/1 now.........I reckon it will be shorter still tomorrow !........... Might have a look at a couple of the other races tomorrow..........:unsure

  2. Re: Flat racing 12th Jan Thought Stratton Banker looked pretty impressive, Russ.........won quite convincingly Still not sure about Absa lutte - I've got her as a bit of a 'last years model', prob too high in the weights after winning several races last winter. A lot of these AW sprint handicaps cut up a bit and they might find one for her when things fall right ...........

Declared a non runner in the end so got paid out on the double which was a right result. The field practically gave Kidlat that win and i doubt mine' date=' who i thought needed a strong pace, would have got close.[/quote'] I wondered wether you'd be pleased when it was a non runner. I think I'd have settled for a non runner under the circs !.........:ok Well done........nice payout !...........:D
  5. Re: SPEED RATINGS I treat Southwell as entirely seperate from the other 3 tracks I tend to treat Wolves as seperate as well as a half way house beteen Kemp/Ling and southwell Some horses go ok at both Wolves and southwell, tho' it might just be that northern trainers use those two tracks so horses tend to run at both For speed figs........ I only use Southwell figs at Southwell If you use RP standard times i reckon the Wolves standards are a bit tough and horses regularly post 20-40 lbs less at Wolves than at K/L, tho this could be accounted for by variations in the track surface which are more pronounced than at K/L The 7F standard at Kempton just looks wrong.........average horses post huge figs over that trip/track - i treat them with caution, otherwise I tend to accept Kemp and Ling figures as interchangeable.

  6. Re: Flat racing 12th Jan

2.25 Lingfield - Garstang - 8/1 Bet365 Havent backed this one yet as would like to see how he's priced up by other firms in the morning.
Well done SER...........:clap Hope you got on before Hugh taylor put him up and ruined the price !.........:loon
  7. Re: Retiring Commentators Just further to my previous post...........there's an awful lot of commentators doing the rounds.........on any given day, especially in the winter, 9/10ths of them must be unemployed........... No wonder they all try to double up as presenters on RUK/ATR.........

  8. Re: Retiring Commentators Anyone know how this commentating malarky works ? I assume they're all self employed and have agents who try and get 'bookings' for them by ringing round the courses I also assume that they are employed on a day by day contract by the racecourses Although that can't always be the case because otherwise you wouldn't get Aussie Jim doing the BBC meetings..........I'm guessing he's employed by the BBC and the racecourse might have it's own commentator for that meeting seperate to the BBC one ? RUK and ATR don't appear to employ commentators - they just take whoever is on duty that day at the track..........so you often get ATR presenters, like Enzo or The Catt, doing RUK commentary I suppose some commentators will get friendly with a particular track and become their usual choice if he's available..........

  9. Re: Flat racing 11/01/11 Pretty pleased with 2nd outing for the Southwell ratings ! Here's the results......... 1.20 1 Stanley rigby..........Won 9/4 2 My Mate Mal...........2nd 12/1 1.50 1 Carnac 2 Six of Clubs.............3rd 15/8 3 Mashdood................2nd 13/2 2.20 1 Finns Rainbow............Won 8/11 2 Cheylesmore 2.50 1 Hambleton 2 powerful presence..........Won 2/5 3 Noble Attitude..............2nd 10/1 3.50 1 Master leon................Won 5/1 2 Ingleby King...............2nd 6/5 3 Elusive warrior Roll on the next meeting at Southwell - the king of racecourses !.........:rollin

  10. Re: Flat racing 11/01/11 3.50 Sou - Master Leon - win at 11/2 with stan James Rgis race revolves around the favourite, Ingleby King, who's won his last two races here. Today he's up in class, up in the weights and down in trip - I reckon he can be taken on ! 2nd fave is Elusive warrior. He's a standing dish here with no less than 9 CD wins. He's in good nick but after 81 starts he needs a career best today as he's never won off a mark this high The one I like is master leon from the Smart yard. He's never won in handicap company but his mark is falling and he's now down 4 lbs since his last run in a handicap. Since then he's appeared to show improved form in claimers. As we discussed in another thread recently, claimer form is often overlooked in handicaps ! He acts on the track and won his maiden here. He was in good form this time last year, winning his maiden, then beaten under a length in a class 4 off a mark 8lbs higher than today In his last run, a claimer over this CD the two horses in front of him and the two behind were rated 75, 90, 73, 80 - so he must have a chance running against mainly 60s rated horses today ! ps apologies if I make some spelling howlers - all the keys on the left hand side of my keyboard have worn away.........I'm havinf to guess at some letters !

  12. Re: Flat racing 11/01/11 2.20 Finns rainbow - win at 10/11 (best price) This looks straightforward - CD winner, in good form, well clear on speed figs Not much more to say really, should be odds on, should win Je suis Un Rockstar is probably in the assessors grip now and 2nd best looks to be Cheylesmore, who ran OK here but looks a bit one paced. Close To The Edge could be an improver

  13. Re: Flat racing 11/01/11 1.50 Carnac - win at 3/1 (best price) Taking a chance with this one improving now stepped up in trip. Has been running on here over shorter trips. Was much bigger odds last night when i was looking at the race, so appears to have been money for him this morning Current fave, Six of Clubs is a CD winner, the only one in the field, but looks a bit slow and was under pressure to win a poor race. He must have a decent chance if only because he definitely gets the trip on this track, but hopefully my selection has a bit more scope at this longer distance.

  14. Re: Flat racing 11/01/11 1.20 Stanley Rigby - win at 11/8 (current best price) Won over 11 furlongs here last time, looking as thoug the extra furlong today would suit. Comes from the Fahey yard Race should be run to suit with My mate mal a confirmed front runner. Current favourite, Odin's raven didn't beat much in his maiden win and has a penalty. He is, howerver a CD winner and in good nick, so he must have a chance. He looks a bit of a plodder and I'm hoping my selection have have a bit more toe in the finish

  15. Re: Flat racing 11/01/11 After a successful first outing for my new improved southwell ratings last time (5/6 winners top rated !) I'm having a go at the handicaps today...... 1.20 1 Stanley rigby 2 My Mate Mal 1.50 1 Carnac 2 Six of Clubs 3 Mashdood 2.20 1 Finns Rainbow 2 Cheylesmore 2.50 1 Hambleton 2 powerful presence 3 Noble Attitude 3.50 1 Master leon 2 Ingleby King 3 Elusive warrior Let's see many i get win and placed..........if any !.......:lol

  16. Re: BBOTD - 10/1/11

Just want to say i'm surprised at how many people put bets up the night before, must be down to early prices? (or lack of time tomorrow) Most important thing has to be the ground conditions surely? What if it hacks it down all night and the ground changes dramatically? Just find it interesting thats all.
I often make my selections the night before but don't post them because i want to see the non runners closer to the race time Not just if 'my' horse is a non runner but if any other horse in the race is a non runner and might affect the way the race is run usually the only time I'll post up the night before is if i think the early prices are too tempting to ignore..........:) one good thing about the AW - you don't have to worry too much about the ground changing overnight !
  17. Re: Race categories I tipped it to win, jay............:unsure:tongue2 I'm not at all put off by horses going into handicaps from claimers or sellers.........in fact i quite like it because of the better odds you often get. On the aw you often get 80s rated horses running in claimers and something rated 60 will run well against them, then go into a 0-65 handicap. Also the handicapper rarely raises horses for runs in claimers/sellers...............so you can get an improving horse running in those races then going back to a handicap off it's old mark before it hit form The horse doesn't know what kind of race it's running in Speed figs are useful - I had Fred running faster in that 3 runner claimer than Even Steven or Shostokovich had run in handicaps. But every now and then you notice a horse that only runs well in sellers/claimers and gets stuffed every time it runs in a handicap. Maybe Ilie Nastase for example ?

  18. Re: Flat Racing 9th Jan

Your new figures worked well Trotter :clap move over Timeform...
Woo hoo !........5/6 races won by my top rated horse ! But most of them were short priced faves, so perhaps not as impressive as first sight. Encouraging though...........:unsure
