  1. Re: Flat racing - thursday 3.00 - Billy Red Hasn't won for a while but gets to run here off 72 after a winter of running off marks in the 80s on the AW Front runner, should be suited by a small field Has won on undulating tracks (brighton) on good to firm and over this trip Victorian Bounty is also a front runner but might be better with some cut in the ground Rough Rock won this last year on his 2nd start after being fairly well beat on his seasonal reappearance and follows the same path today. He had a good season last year and starts this time 19 lbs higher. I think maybe he'll pay for a good season Sherjawy might win from a hold up position but looks better over 5F now and Run King appears to have gone the wrong way

  2. Re: BBOTD 20th April Sou 5.00 - Spic N Span - win at 2/1 bog wm hill Goes very well here with 6 CD wins in class 6 handicaps and sellers Won last time out over CD in a handicap to show he's in good nick. The track suits his run style, front running - it often seems difficult to catch the front runners over this straight 5 furlongs Market rival, Effistorm, is better in at the weights but hasn't won here for 5 years and maybe as he's got older he's no longer got the necessary pace to stay up the front

  3. Re: Whip Abuse - Would you change the rules and how?

What about if the horse has been hit once in the wrong place, yet goes on to win by 10 lengths. Does he get banned? How would punters on course react to it? Or if the number of strokes is just 1 above the limit, yet has won by 4 lengths; so it is evident 1 less stroke made no difference?
Whatever the rules are the jockeys would probably just ride within them..........there'd be no point in breaking the rules by just one stroke or by hitting the horse in the wrong place if the horse was going to lose the race as well as you (the jockey) getting a ban There'd probably be a lot less bans if the jockeys knew that the horse would be disqualified if he broke the whip rules - basically they'd be a lot less likely to break the rules as there'd be no incentive As it is now........they can 'take a ban' to win the race..........surely that's wrong ?
  4. Re: Whip Abuse - Would you change the rules and how? I'm trying to play devil's advocate here, ginge........... The man (or usually woman) in the street who occasionally sees horse racing on the box, maybe the Grand National............they see a jockey whipping a horse to make it go faster to win a few quid That's the public perception that we're dealing with in the whip debate. Us lot that are immersed in the sport will be aware of the arguments about safety, straightening, all that kind of stuff............but Joe or Jane Public isn't They just see 'greedy' people whipping horses to try and win some money Personally my opinion is to ignore the public...........OK, we'll get grief every year when the National comes around but 364 days we'll be left in peace.......... The alternative is to try and appease public opinion by changing whip rules. I don't think we should change whip rules to appease the public because the public won't be happy until there are no whips.......... I just think for the integrity of the sport it would be better if we had a system whereby the team (jockey, trainer, connections) didn't win and keep a race where the jockey has cheated and has been found guilty of cheating by the same authority which decides not to change the result.

  5. Re: Whip Abuse - Would you change the rules and how?

Not exactly what I said Trotter. I think for a minor breech of the rules, the horse should NOT be disqualified. Punters will be up in arms if the horse is chucked out for just one more "slap" than officially allowed. If however, he's gone three strokes over the "limit", then it should be disqualified. ie Only when it is a flagrant abuse of the rules is he disqualified. This would also encourage jockeys not to get anywhere near the limit of whip use. In either force, numbers or placing the stroke.
I think it would be simpler to regulate if it was black and white........any offence for which the jockey gets a ban should lead to disqualification Otherwise how do you answer Big Mac's point.........if the jockey gets a ban, then he's obviously cheated or he wouldn't get a ban........and if the jockey has cheated then why should they keep the race ? What about the punter on the 2nd who's jockey hasn't broken the rules..........he would be miffed 'cos he's only lost because the winning jockey cheated
  6. Re: Whip Abuse - Would you change the rules and how?

Is there any damage done to horses when they are whipped ? They are after all one ton beasts , surely a whip by a 8 stone jockey would not have a lasting effect. Didn't they introduce horse friendly whips a few years back which made it less harmful to the horses.
The horse has to feel it or there'd be no point doing it...... It probably won't cause lasting damage...........just as beating children when I was young didn't, but times have changed and most people don't like the idea of beating children or horses now.........
  7. Re: Whip Abuse - Would you change the rules and how? Basically i agree with you Ginger........ There's no doubt that whipping is an emotive subject, particularly amongst the casual (and dare I say it, less informed.......:unsure ) members of the public I post on a big 'general discussion' forum and whenever horse racing crops up the threads get inundated with posters saying how abhorant it is in this day and age that we allow animals to be whipped in the name of sport. You can't really argue with these people because, frankly...........if we were starting from now, we wouldn't allow animals to be whipped The arguments about running straight, 'encouraging', etc all sound good to us, immersed in the sport...........but logically there's no real reason to keep the whip apart from that we've always had it If there had never been whipping for 100 years, we'd still have our racing, we'd still have our great champions.........but they might be different horses. maybe the tendancy to run waywardly would have been bred out by now as the breeding industry would have concentrated on winners who won by running straight. The Classics winners would be horses who ran straight and they would sire the next generation and so on. Who knows, we might actually have improved the breed by now.............;) But we are where we are and it is not realistic to ban the whip as of now......... So..........I agree with ginger........disqualification for horses who's jockey has broken the whip rules. As Big Mac often says - 'can you think of any other sport where you keep the win if you're found guilty of cheating'

  8. Re: BBOTD Tuesday 19th 2.40 Ponte - Szabo's destiny - win at 10/1 BOG bet365 Put up his best performance last time out when stepped up to 12 furlongs for the first time. That run came after a 3 month break so hopefully he'll come on a bit This should be a test of stamina for these 3yo, 12 furlongs, stiff track, fast ground, small field............I'm tempted to go with the horse with the most stamina who is Mojolika but he hasn't show much on the track yet Bestwecan has the least stamina and could be worth taking on even tho' Johnston often gets his horses to outstay their pedigree. I also have celani as a dubious stayer Prince Freddie looks ok but he weakened in the last 100 yds at Beverley last time and it might be that he's not suited by a stiff finish Devoted has the stamina but flopped in his only handicap run and he might just have been assessed too high on his maiden win

  9. Re: Gary Nutting Nice post mowgli........I agree with you on the general subject of tipping lines. My hobby isn't betting on horses, my hobby is studying horse race form and coming to an opinion. However..........thinking back many years to when i first got into the game, I think I might have used a tipping line - I certainly used to send off for details. I think maybe it's a way in to the game, maybe a phase that people go through when they're first getting interested ? I must have sent off to Martin Julian about 25 years ago..........can't remember ever buying any tips from him, but he still writes to me trying to flog his books and his syndicates ! (which are actually pretty good if you like that kind of thing !)

  10. Re: Frankel Well..........I made a post yesterday saying why he could be taken on in the Greenham......... I've wiped the egg off my face now.............:tongue2 But i thought it was very impressive for a seasonal debut I'd got the idea into my mind that nowadays a trainer with a serious horse would go straight to the Guineas because the season has been extended and all the big money is now at the back end..........so they want to start their top class horses as late as possible But of course.........Henry is old school...............:clap

  11. Re: BBOTD 17th April Navan 4.35 - Kirinda - win at 13/8 BOG bet365 One for the AW boys here This horse has only had the one run - at Dundalk on the AW. But comfortably won that day with Empowering in 2nd. She went on to easily win the 1000 Gns trial and is a leading fancy for the classics Should be well suited by the step up to 10F and looks an exciting prospect for the top middle distance races this year for the Aga Khan and John Oxx Looks like Gemstone is the one to beat having finished 2nd to Lolly For Dolly on her seasonal debut

  12. It's a bit of a flat Sunday with no 'proper' racing in the UK.........:rollin Thank God for ireland ! Couple of nice races at Navan 4.05 - Fame and Glory - win Not worth backing at prohibitive odds. I though of recommending a 'lay' on the basis that I laid him (in the LotD comp) on his seasonal debut last year and he was beaten at odds of 2/5 Buit the O'Brien team seems a bit more forward this year and this looks a much weaker race than last year's debut 4.35 - Kirinda - win One for the AW boys here This horse has only had the one run - at Dundalk on the AW. But comfortably won that day with Empowering in 2nd. She went on to easily win the 1000 Gns trial and is a leading fancy for the classics Should be well suited by the step up to 10F and looks an exciting prospect for the top middle distance races this year for the Aga Khan and John Oxx

  13. Re: Gary Nutting

How is that site even allowed to exist? Its plagarism relaying the tips of others and selling them on?
I'd have thought that the problem was more that if you suscribe and get all the tips relayed, you'll have scores of horses every day and they'll cancel each other out...........eg you might get tips for 6 or 7 horses in the same race.. I've never subscribed so I've only looked at the results page but there seems to be hundreds of tipsters listed........ From the tipsters point of view i suppose there must be a time lag until relayline gets their pages written and loaded.........so you could 'sell' your tips on the basis that your subscribers will be able to get on early before the tip is published ?
  14. Re: Question about the 5:40 @ Donny today I think you can drive yourself mad trying to figure why horses are running in particular races It might just be something as straightforward as the owners having a day out at the races and wanting to see their horse run......... It Battista looks well handicapped on the best of his AW form but ran a stinker last time out...........usually front runs, maybe he's in as a pacemaker ? Maybe they're just going to run every couple of weeks in races he can't win hoping his mark falls so he can get into class 6 races towards the back end or start the next AW season on a low mark

  15. Re: Flat Racing Saturday 16th I can see a case for taking Frankel on in the Greenham He's unlikely to be fully fit and they'll want to give him an easy time. A lot of Cecil's runners have looked like they were having obvious prep runs in the last few days. There seems to be a view afoot that they're running Picture Editor as a pacemaker...........Picture Editor looks like an out and out stayer.........can he go fast enough to set a decent pace or is the idea that he'll set a slow pace to bring Frankel's turn of foot into play ? Hannon's second string on the other hand looks like a nutcase front runner and he's already had a run this season........I don't think Picture Editor will get anywhere near the front I reckon Hannon's tactics are for his pacemaker to blast off and hope to take the kick out of a possibly unfit Frankel and leave it up to Strong Suit to follow his stablemate and for the two of them to fight it out just like his two runners did last year ps Hannon's second string won this last year ! Greenham - Strong Suit 2 points win at 7/2 BOG Bet365 Greenham - Vanguard Dream - 1 pt EW at 40/1 BOG Laddies

  16. Re: BBOTD Saturday 16th Newb 3.45 - Night Lily - ew at 18/1 BOG Bet365 One of the horses who I've followed on the AW this winter and been watching out for returning to turf They could have chosen a less competitive race to run her in ! Improved a lot over the winter and gets to run today off a mark 13lbs lower than her current AW mark and 5 lbs lower than her last win in a handicap, a class 3 in February. Her last run was even better than the win when finishing a head second in a listed race. The horses finishing around her were all rated in the 90s so her current AW mark of 95 looks reasonable. Gets to race here off 82 A claimer takes another 5 off. Don't know much about K T O'neill, but he/she rode a winner last week and rides a bit for Hannon so must be ok. Interestingly the jockey can 'do' 7-11 and the 5 lb claim takes the weight down to 8-1, so there shouldn't be any overweight Has won on turf, has won on good and good to firm, has won against colts (the Listed race was a Fillies only) and all her 6 career wins have been at a mile. Has won in decent sized fields and is well suited by a strong pace as she's usually held and comes through with a late run It's a fiercely competitive handicap, but I'm hoping for a good run for my money !

  17. Re: BBOTD 14th April Kemp 6.15 - Sunset Kitty at 4/1 bog with bet365 Comes here in good nick after finishing a head second over CD last time out. Reversed form with Perfect Chi'i that day after being beaten over 4L by her the previous run, looks like my selection is improving and getting closer. 3rd run back from a break The current fave here today drops back from 8 furlongs which might not be ideal if this turns into the usual slow race, sprint finish that kempton seems to produce these days.

  18. Re: Why are horses not fit enough for their targets ? In the case of Wooton bassett my reading of what Fahey said is that the horse had a setback (presumbly a bit poorly or had a small accident) which meant they couldn't work him for 2 weeks until he recovered That's understandable It's a bit less understandable these days running horses which will 'come on for the run'..............ie that are not fit. But it happens all the time, trainers even tell interviewers that the horse will come on for the run (ie I haven't done my job properly) and even worse..........as punters we 'expect' horses to come on for a run. We really should'nt, we should expect them to be ready when they tuirn up at the track

  19. Re: BBOTD 13th April Newm 4.10 - Sing Softly - win at 3/1 bog with vc Has made a quick start to the season in ireland with a coup[le of wins including a Listed race last time Unlikely to be one of O'Briens Guineas horses as presumably they're still tucked away - I doubt his Guineas fillies will be going to the Classics with 3 runs under their belts this season So she's probably going full pelt today whereas some of the others might be treating this as a prep run Both wins have some on soft/heavy ground but the experts say she should handle good ground OK
