I'm struggling with the new site now
There is just so much information there that my brain is exploding
If you have a subscription and click on Pro Card then Newspaper Form you get a choice of 3 different PDF files for each race. One is just the Form as printed in the Racing Post newspaper. But the other 2 are Horse Profiles and what they call Form which is the basic form lines but with all the notes from Race Analysis and Quotes. The Horse profiles give the horse's record with numerous Filters with todays conditions highlighted in each sequence (this is fabulous information at you fingertips and is probably what I'll end up looking at)
Trouble is that it's difficult to ignore information.......... if it's there you feel you should look at it and it's going to take forever
Information overload !
Until I get used to it all think I'm going to have to go back to sticking to 4 or 5 runner races which is a shame as it scuppers any chance of winning the monthly comp as you don't get many viable big priced ones or EW shots

1.15 Asc - Hammersely Lake - win at 4/1 bog wm hill
Graduation chase over 2 miles and 5 furlongs
Top Notch is likely to be all the rage here but there are serious doubts about the trip as to date he's been best at 2 miles and was fairly well beaten the only time he tried two and a half
My selection is a stablemate of the favourite and ran well last to be 2nd in a grade 2 at Cheltenham, giving the impression that stepping up in trip would suit
-
I like Lil Rockefeller
Very reminiscent of an old warhorse who won this a few years ago in Lough Derg ............always considered a bit of a journeyman horse but had lots of guts and never gave up
A real trier if not as talented as some others
-
12.45 Asc - Burst Ya Bubble - ew at 33/1 bog Coral
Maiden hurdle
Quite a few from top yards here so it could be a good contest
I'm going for an outsider from a smaller yard that won this race last year. My selection looks like he could improve a lot for the extra half mile here after staying on steadily over the minimum trip here last time. Has about 5 lengths to find to find on today's favourite, Criq Rock, from that last run but I can see him turning the tables with the extra trip not certain to suit the Jolly who has shown a tendency to run keen and pull hard
-
Ex 3.10 - Powerful Symbol - ew at 16/1 bog betway
Maiden hurdle
big field here so a bit tricky with not much hurdle form to go on
I'm going for one of Jonjo's in the hope that he'll come on a lot for his recent seasonal debut
looks an out and out stayer so this stiff track should suit him. He won a Point and his best run under Rules has come at Carlisle, a stiff RH track like today

It is very 'busy' with lots of stuff !
Noticed a couple of interesting and maybe valuable changes to the individual horse pages - it now includes in date order notifications of gelding, change of yards and maybe other stuff that I haven't noticed yet, The horse page also shows the trainers and jockey 'last 14 days' wins to runs and the Spotlight comment for todays race

I noticed last night that I've now been upgraded to the new Racing Post site which is still described as 'Beta' so I guess they're still working on it
I've just got the basic subscription
Thought it might be handy to have a thread for posting opinions, any problems, any help needed finding stuff, any new features that you notice, any old features that seem to have disappeared

Newb 12.55 - Golden Birthday - ew at 12/1 bog betvictor
Maiden hurdle
Few inexperienced types here and some from the Flat who are yet to prove they are cut out for the winter game
My selection had 4 runs in bumpers, won one, placed in the other 3 and he's finished 2nd on his hurdles debut last time. That was a horrible day in driving rain and he wandered a bit when in front. Calmer conditions today
I have noticed that all his runs to date have been on RH tracks ...........hopefully that is just coincidence rather than the trainer thinking he's better that way round

I watched the Shergar Derby win again
If you ever want to know what commentators mean by 'travelled well' just watch that !
-
I suppose they might have taken into consideration the fact that he's been under a cloud for a long time as a result of the first botched up 'trial' and has probably suffered in the meantime as to attracting new owners etc
So in a sense he's already served a punishment and that might be reflected in the more lenient 'official' punishment this time round

I never go racing these days but watching on the telly at the paddock parade I like to pick out the horse that most looks like a greyhound...........
-
1.10 Winc - Steel Express - ew at 80/1 bog wm hill
Novice hurdle
With a well odds on favourite I'm looking for one at bigger odds that might outrun his price and be in the shake up
My selection finished 6th at Chepstow behind Charlemar who went on to win again at Aintree. It looks like that was a decent race and my horse was just beaten 8 lengths. That was his hurdling debut and he was a bit keen and made a couple of slow jumps..........hopefully he'll improve a bit for the experience
Big field today - I think my horse could settle in the pack if they go a decent clip and he appears to have enough stamina to be running on at the finish
-
Sad news that 3 times Derby winning jockey Walter Swinburn has died at the young age of 55
He was just 19 when he won the Derby on Shergar
-
1.30 Plu - Sissinghurst - ew at 33/1 bog bet365
Novice hurdle
Only a couple of these are fancied in the market so I'm looking for an EW sgot amongst the rest
My selection finished 3rd, beaten a fair way, last time out but showed promise and didn't look suited by the heavy ground at Lingfield. Stepping up in trip and on better ground today he could improve
-
Carl 12.00 - Pikarnia - ew at 10/1 bog bet365
Novice hurdle
stiff track and soft ground could make this a bit of a lottery for young hurdlers
my horse looked like he needed a stiffer test at Wetherby last time and that was quite a decent race

I think the most important first thing is to get to grips with the class structure of the sport
I mean the way that races are classified and the levels of ability required for each grade and type of race
As a newbie it's all too easy to fall into the trap of seeing that a horse has won it's last 3 runs without knowing the value of those wins
Try to get to grips with how the handicap system works.......how horses move up and down the ratings and consequently have to run in better races or can get into worse races.
Try to understand the Pattern, Listed races and conditions events.......look at the race conditions to understand the penalty system
The first question that you should be asking is ........is the horse running in a race that it can win ?
Of course it's easy to start posting caveats to the general principles but it's useful to keep things simple !

Ling 1.05 - Riot Act - win at 9/4 bog ladbrokes
Novice hurdle
Like the look of this one from Jonjo's yard
His horses usually come on a lot for their seasonal debuts and this one finished 2nd first time out, travelling well. The Post reported that he has lots of scope and surely won't have to come on much, if at all, to win today
The Mighty Don could be a danger but had to be driven out to win a Plumpton bumper which probably isn't great form, but hat least he's a winner

Bang 2.25 - Our Willie - ew at 16/1 bog wm hill
novice hurdle
my selection was fairly well beaten on hurdles debut last time out but ran well enough to suggest that he can at least place in this uncompetitive heat
He drops back half a mile and tired badly up the hill at Hexham so a less demanding test should suit and the Post noted that he ran well for a long way and should come on for the run
The odds on favourite looks miles clear on her bumper form (grade 2 winner) but makes her hurdle debut and you never know until they've jumped under race conditions. Apart from her it looks a weak heat
My original EW selection was going to be Pearlita at 50/1......so I hope she doesn't win.......
That horse is called Willie Boy not Our Willie.......
not sure what was on my mind........

Warw 12.50 - Town Parks - ew at 100/1 bog boylesports
Maiden hurdle
taking a punt on a long shot today
he finished nicely on hurdle debut recently in 4th .......not given a hard time and jumped left, the Post noted that he showed ability and should come on for the run
should be suited by coming to a LH track
this looks a fairly decent race with a few from big yards but I expect him to run better than his odds !
-
12.55 Leic - Violets Boy - win at 2/1 bog wm hill
Handicap chase
my selection has recently returned from 18 months off and looks quite well handicapped as he's won off higher in the past
Ran Ok a couple of times, 2nd then stumbled when booked for 2nd.Struggled a bit in a higher grade at Newbury last time but dropping on class and returning to a RH track could see him in a better light. Has won on g/f in the past
Favourite is Foundation Man who looks ok but does tend to do his winning in the autumn and has looked as though he might be tailing off a bit now that the winter is here even though the Firm ground might not be very wintery
-
Font 1.40 - Rainbow Dreamer win at 7/4 bog bet365
Juvenile hurdle
Can't find a likely EW shot today so going for one of the fancied ones.
My horse finished 3rd in the Listed juvenile race at Wetherby and before that had finished 2nd in the decent hurdle at Chepstow in early season. He's got the best hurdle form in the book and has experience with two runs in decent company
He's odds against because there's a 'hype' horse from the Nicholls yard who apparently has been working well at home. He might be terrific but his French form isn't that great. He's won some races on the flat but they don't look up to much and he's only got RPRs in the low 60s. By contrast my horse's last run on the flat earned an RPR of 92.
-
12.10 Ayr - Largy Bull - ew at 20/1 bog wm hill
Novice hurdle
My selection ran OK on hurdles debut last time with a staying on 4th at Carlisle
That was over the same trip as today and it looked as though a stiffer test of stamina might suit which he hasn't particularly got today on this flat track......but the ground is softer which might play to his strengths. And he might be fitter as that was his first run for 5 mionths
-
Kelso 12.20 - Rising Tide - EW at 50/1 bog wm hill
Novice hurdle
Looking for an EW shot that might be better than the odds suggest
My selection has his second run over sticks. Last time out he finished 4th at Ayr. He was fairly well beaten, 25L, but he was prominent for a long way before fading. That was is first run for 18 months so he's entitled to have needed it.

Yes, I might have to think about going back to the AW and starting on my own ratings again
It's certainly the case that since I stopped doing that my personal form has plummeted.............
I'll have a think about it and maybe start something new in the new year
I guess I'm swayed by the monthly comp where you need to make 30 plus points to be in with a chance ..........and you're not going to do that unless you can get a big priced one or two during the month.
Those 'horse profiles' on the new Post site could be great for the AW as it's pretty much how I used to approach it before but now all the information is there for me (conversely of course it's also there for everyone else, which isn't so good !)
