Cheltenham - Tuesday 16th March 2010

Recommended Posts

Cheltenham - Day 1 - Tuesday 16th I know there is the Cheltenham section that everyone is posting in but there is likely to be tips going up in this section too? 2.05 Cheltenham Captain Cee Bee - of the Irish runners he looks the strongest contender on form showed so far. Somersby and Sports Line are big dangers IMO but CCB looked a class act when powering home last time out, we know he loves the hill, and his lengthy absence off the track counteracts his age, which the stats men will tell you means he cannot win. High class hurdlers do well in this. 7/2 Bet 365 taken. 2.40 Cheltenham I originally backed Our Vic for this but he is a NR and the stake was returned so Im on Razor Royale instead. LTO winning form is important at the festival as highlighted by Bill and Bowles in the other section and this one impressed me when winning at the track earlier in season. Won last time in RP Chase and although jumping isnt great, looks a big price. 16/1 SJ. 3.20 Cheltenham This looks the race of the festival and waiting for this more than the GC probably. So many in with a chance, but Celestial Halo looks a big price, and Nicholls is adept at bringing his horses back to form when it matters. Close second in the race last season and form of his reappearance win showed he retains ability. 14/1 Lads. 4.40 Cheltenham With Quevega off the track for so long, and flopped when last on it, the price looks short and Voler la Vedette looked the better bet at 9/4 given her beating of Go Native. Would be firm fav if from a bigger yard IMO. 9/4 Blue Sq.

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 Well heres my thoughts NH not my strong point but I cant help but get excited by Cheltenham! 1.30 Cheltenham Supreme Novices Happy to sit tight on this race with my ante post bet of 4pts on Dunguib at 7/4, yes he has suspect jumping at time buts aslong as he stays on his feet I just cant see him being beaten, he has beat everything that has stood in his way with extreme ease and usually with those horse going on to boost the form, he copes with cheltenham's hill having won the bumper last year. 4pt win Dunguib (7/4 antepost) 2.05 Cheltenham The Arkle Real competitive race and certainly not one I'l b playing heavy. Captain Cee Bee looked right back to his best a month ago, Mccoy back on board and he has won on him before and also has solid Cheltenham form with a good win in Supreme novices 2 years ago 2 lengths ahead of Binocular. Kangaroo Court hasnt exactly got the classy look of a Cheltenham winner but he has made the switch to fences extremely effectively and although never got into supreme novices last year at Cheltenham he may have more to offer over fences and also goes well fresh. Sizing Europe comes into this unbeaten over fences and a classy hurdler previously winning the Greatwood round here back in 2007 and he maybe capable of more improvement than some in this field. The other that interests me is Somersby has been kept back for this race alone and does look a class act and a 3rd behind Go Native last year in Supreme proves the hill should be of little problem. 0.25pt e/w Kangaroo Court 25/1 bet365 0.5pt win Somersby 4/1 bet365 0.5pt win Sizing Europe 11/2 pp 2.40 Cheltenham William Hill Trophy 3 Interest me in this race and not Bensalem I just not sure he is upto such a competitive race off this sort of mark and maybe worth opposing in this big field. So I am gonna take Exmoor Ranger who seems to have come back to his best this year with a good win at Newbury and then an even better second to Mikerhostins at Sandown last month 4lb higher mark and looks to be improving. The Package is also currently go well when beating The Tother One over this course 3 months ago and now running off a 9lb higher mark he may well still give his running, the other one that interests me is The Tother One beaten only 1 length by The Package on penultimate start and gets a 3lb turn around in the weights and although flopped last time out he has been given a freshen up and should be thereabouts is on song. 0.5pt win The Package 6/1 bet365 0.25pt e/w Exmoor Ranger 14/1 bet365 0.25pt e/w The Tother One 16/1 bet365 3.20 Cheltenham Champion Hurdle I am happy to sit tight with the 1 Million pound seeking Go Native for this race he has the best recent form, with questions marks behind several of these with well being concerns over Binocular and Solwhit. Khyber Kim is running his biggest race to date but really looks to have got the hang of things recently. Starluck should be fit from a spin over the flat and won well over a inadequate trip to suggets all is well and only short head down on Go Native in the christmas hurdle and is my saver for the race. 2pt win Go Native 9/2 lads 0.25pt e/w Starluck 14/1 vcbet 4.00 Cheltenham Cross Country Chase Nine Carberry has won this 3 times in the row now and Garde Champtre is seeking a hatrick in the race having won this carrying top weight last year and has totally dominated the cross country scene of recent years and should be tuned up after a run over hurdles hard to oppose even though L'ami may have some weight in hand. 1pt win Garde Champtre 9/4 hills

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 1.30pm 'Dunguib' - This thing is just a machine, can see it winning on the bridle, only thing I fear is 'Get Me Out Of Here' who was very impressive LTO. 2.05pm 'Captain Cee Bee' - Form horse of the race, favourites chance. 2.40 'Character Building' - Over-priced @ double figures, ran well here last year under an amateur (admittedly a decent one), a good stayer, a great jockey booking, I'm hopeful. 3.20 'Go Native' - Very open race but on the likely ground, can see a perfectly judged Carberry ride to take advantage of the fine turn of speed horse posesses. 4.00 'Garde Champetre' - Nina, Nina, I'd have a 3some with you and this animal. Always wins dunnit? :) Would fear 'Heads On The Ground' more than 'L'Ami' or 'Drombeag'. 4.40 'Voler La Vadette' - Form horse, Quevega drifting which I don't like to see from Mullins trained horse, beat some good 'uns LTO and finished in front of current CH favourite time before. prices', still, that'll come over the next 4 days. Good luck all. I can see some poor bookies this time tomorrow!!!!!

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 2:05 Cheltenham: Woolcombe Folly 1pt e/w 25/1 Bet365 & Kangeroo Court 1pt e/w 33/1 Ladbrokes Woolcombe Folly looks a very big price for an unbeaten Paul Nicholls horse. He ran up a fine sequence over hurdles culminating in a Listed race win at Kempton. He was rated 147 over hurdles. On his first outing over the larger obstacles he was pitched in to a Grade 2 at Doncaster getting up by a nose. Ruby Walsh has overlooked Woolcombe Folly but there could well be more improvement to come and while it would be a gutter for Sam Thomas who had gone to school the horse when he had his accident, Woolcombe Folly looks overpriced. Kangaroo Court too looks overpriced. A course winner the form is hard to assess. However, two of the horses he comfortably beat that day Red Admiral & Martys Mission were subsequently not beaten completely out of sight by Punchestowns. So the form looks ok. Kangaroo Court quickened well up the hill having been on a tight rein most of the way round. The form of most at the head of the market is on soft (heavy even) and with the ground drying out Kangaroo Court's chance could be enhanced. (Prices as at Sunday evening) 2:40 Cheltenham: Ogee 2pts win 1pt place 11/1 Paddy Power & Exmoor Ranger 2pts win 1pt place 14/1 Bet365 (12345) Ogee comes in to this race after an easy win at Southwell. That form is hard to assess but interestingly his chase mark is eight pounds lower than his hurdle rating. Although almost off bottom weight here, Ogee is a Grade 1 winner over hurdles and while undoubtably inexperienced, there could well be more to come. Exmoor Ranger has been in good form lately going down to Monkehostin at Sandown who goes really well there. At the last Festival Exmoor Ranger was going well when falling which is a plus and a negative, but does seem to have improved his jumping. Could go close. Both trainers in decent form.

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 4:40 Cheltenham: Sway 1pt e/w 14/1 Betfred Sway has more letters than numbers, but does have some very good Listed form in France and went off favourite for a Grade 2 before falling!! She had previously beaten the winner comfortably. With powerful connections she will have been well schooled again for this and Sway clearly has ability. Worth taking a chance at the price.

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 1:30 Cheltenham: Menorah 2pts win 10/1 & Blackstairmountain 1pt win 10/1 Both Paddy Power (Stakes refunded if Dunguib wins) If you take out Menorah's last run he would be much shorter in the betting, probably close second favourite. His run at Kempton was in a time that compared well with Go Native on the same card and Phillip Hobbs is red hot at the moment. Blackstairmountain is not exactly a dark horse but won nicely on his debut over hurdles and there could be considerably more to come.

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 1.30 I think the Pipe horse DAN BREEN is being underestimated here and is well worth a e/w bet at 20's and a small win at around 29 on BF. 2.05 25's looks overpriced for the Nicholls raider WOOLCOMBE FLYER e/w 25/1 who hasn't done much wrong only that price because Ruby on the Mullins horse. 2.40 You pay your money and take your chance here. I'll go for ex Nicholls horse OFFICER DE RESERVE e/w 40/1 having first run for new trainer one that usually pops up with a winner at this meeting. Also a small e/w on OFFSHORE ACCOUNT who has been very disappointing for a long time but could run a big race here. 4O's at the mo but will probably go bigger . I'll be looking for massive prices on BF. 3.20 Can't see KHYBER KIM being out of the first three but the fancy e/w prices has gone long ago. Will be very disappointed if this horse doesn't win......a mouth watering race and i think this horse is a bit special but he will have to be produced very, very late as he idles in front. 4.00 LACDOUDAL is overpriced at 40/1 off current mark. 4.40 A win bet on SWAY 14/1 if it stays on its feet will be hard to beat for very shrewd owner. A nice e/w bet is 40/1 shot AURA AOUT YOU who was third in this last year. Very lightly raced and if her jumping has improved should go well again. The vibes arn't great about last years winner Quevega who may not even be fav come race time.

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 13:30 Cheltenham Spinal Research Supreme Novices´ Hurdle Grade 1 I tipped up Get Me Out Of Here when he maintained his unbeaten record last time out at Newbury in the Grade 3 Totesport Trophy. I thought he travelled really well that day and still went on to win by just under 2 lengths despite hitting the last hurdle which looked to have dented his chances, but he stayed on well and won going away from the 2nd placed Ronaldo Des Mottes. Seems as if he won't mind the drying ground having won on Good going twice, as well as winning in Soft and Good To Soft. Has been raised 15lbs from his win LTO but I feel he is progressing really well and there is still more to come. Dunguib is obviously going to be the one to beat and to be honest there isn't much else in the race that I can see causing an upset here apart from my selection but have added a small each way bet on an outsider in Fiulin. The Evan Williams stable was on fire yesterday, notching up three winners at Taunton. Moloney was on board for all three and he teams up with Evan Williams once again in this race. The horse has won in Listed company on the flat off a mark of 106 and is still fairly lightly raced with only 15 runs to date. Did make a disappointing start over hurdles but I feel the drying ground may be better suited for him but I do expect him to get totally outclassed but at the price he is currently, its worth a small risk. 1pt win Get Me Out Of Here @ 5/1 (Bet365 - BOG) 0.25pts E/W Fiulin @ 200/1 (Betfred - BOG) 14:05 Cheltenham Irish Independent Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase Grade 1 Should be a cracking race this and I have managed to get down to 2 that I like although I have changed my mind during this process. Firstly Somersby has made a fantastic start chasing having won 2/2 to date. These have been in small fields but he did win a Grade 2 Novice event LTO at Sandown. From 8 races to date overall he has won 4, finished 3rd on three occasions and been unplaced once. Stayed on well up the hill at the festival last year in the Grade 1 Supreme Novices hurdle at a big price of 40/1. This has been his only visit to Cheltenham to date and the fact that McCoy seemed to prefer this over his ride in the race then it seems like it should be in with a great chance as McCoy is very honest in his profession. My other selection is Riverside Theatre who has also made a good start to chasing winning 2 out of 2. He has been sent off odds on favourite in both those races but did win a Novice Grade 2 race LTO at Kempton in good style. This will be his toughest task to date but more progression can be expected and he should be a good shout for a place at the very least. Versatile groundwise having won on Good, Good To Soft and Soft ground. All his winning has been done over 16-17 furlongs so trip is perfect for him. 1pt win Somersby @ 4/1 (Paddy Power - BOG) 1pt win Riverside Theatre @ 15/2 (Paddy Power - BOG) 14:40 Cheltenham >William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase Grade 3 This is possibly the most wide open race of the day for me. Going to be siding with two in this, was tempted to have a play on three but have opted for just the 2. Nenuphar Collonges has won twice over a similar trip at this course, firstly back in December 2007 off a mark of 134 in a Grade 2 Novices Hurdle. He then won at the festival in a Grade 1 Novices Hurdle off a mark of 135. His only other run over hurdles at the track resulted in a 2nd place in what was his first race at Cheltenham in November 2007. He was 3rd in this race last year off a mark just 2lbs lower. He was beaten by a fantastic ride on Wichita Lineman and behind Maljimar who has a fantastic course record himself. Comes into the race with a similar formline to last season so could well run to a place again or maybe even go one better. Character Building is another one in the race with some good course form which reads 42431. His win came over further off a mark of 139 in a class 2 handicap. Is only 6lbs higher for todays run which should be within his capabilities. Seemed as if the run LTO over hurdles was just a prep run for this race, that gave him a chance to get a run in before the race although he does act well fresh having placed or won on all his first runs within a season (bar the race LTO which was his first one of the season). Gerraghty takes the ride which is quite an interesting jockey booking for me, this will be his first time on board the horse and hopefully he can get a fine tune out of him. 1pt win Nenuphar Collonges @ 20/1 (Paddy Power - BOG) 1pt win Character Building @ 12/1 (Paddy Power - BOG) 15:20 Cheltenham Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy Grade 1 Two horses that like to be held-up in this race for me so hopefully they are both tanking up the hill side by side in what would be an ideal scenario haha! The bonus chasing Go Native just can't be discounted here for me. Has won 8/14 races to date including three Grade 1 races to his name already. Did only beat Starluck by a short head off level weights LTO but on the same terms I feel he can hold the placings. Won the Supreme Novices hurdle at the festival last year when he beat Medermit by a neck, they race on the same terms again and although I feel it could be close between the two again, I just feel Go Native has progressed more since then. Another one I like is Khyber Kim. It seems as if Nigel Twiston-Davies has finally got things right for his gelding since he has won over course and distance in his last two starts. They were in a Grade 2 and Grade 3 race and I don't see why he can't add a Grade 1 to that list of wins. He beat Medermit off level weights LTO and although the Alan King yard is arguably in better form now, I just feel this horse will be fresh and ready for this race. Celestial Halo does run off slightly better terms but again I feel Khyber Kim can outsprint him up the hill. 1pt win Go Native @ 9/2 (WillHill - BOG) 1pt win Khyber Kim @ 8/1 (Betfred - BOG) 16:00 Cheltenham Glenfarclas Handicap Chase Really can't see past Garde Champetre here. He boasts a very impressive course and distance record which reads F121111. Is only 1lb higher than his win here in November so I really don't see that being a hinderence. Acts on any going, Nina Carberry knows the horse very well so there is not much reason at all to oppose this horse who is a specialist in this type of race. Is 11 years old now but has showed no signs of a decline in form. The race at Punchestown LTO over an inadequate 2m was clearly just to blow any cobwebs away and I expect to see this horse in the winners enclosure yet again tomorrow. 2pt win Garde Champetre @ 9/4 (WillHill - BOG)

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 I aren't really fussed with Cheltenham per se, although I do like to watch it but not particularly as a betting proposition. However I do have a couple of interesting selections for Tuesday. Going to play in every race, even if only for small amounts. 13:30 Cheltenham. Already had my bet in this, saw it's race at Newbury and thought Oscar Whisky is the only thing that can realistic beat Dunguib if that gets round. Billy let us know that 20's was still available and got on quickly ;). Link here. http://www.punterslounge.com/forum/1609858-post113.html 2pts Win @ 20/1 Ladbrokes (ante-post) 14:05 Aren't sure with this race at all, apart from the fact that Captain Cee Bee looks a class act and is a solid selection. Fell at Leopardstown two runs ago which is an obvious concern that it's jumping isn't up to scratch but came back to winning ways at Naas, doing so without even trying. Although the Arkle is always super competitive, I think Captain Cee Bee is progressing, even at it's age and can win by a fair margin. 1pt Win @ 11/4 StanJames 14:40 The Package beat the Tother One on their last meeting, and although with different weights this time, The Package impressed me enough to think that it can win this very tight race. A race I wouldn't dare play in unless it was such a big festival. Has winning form against a few of these and is probably the safest selection to go with. Some in this field are prepping for Aintree whilst others prominent in the market, such as Ogee have major question marks about their jumping. 0.5pt Win @ 11/2 SJ 15:20 For the Champion Hurdle, I'm split between Punjabi and Starluck. Starluck was only a short-head behind Go Native last time out, a horse who is likely to go off favourite. At 12/1, Starluck is very decent value, especially for a horse ideally fit after an all-weather Kempton run where it won readily over a mile. Starluck travels so so well, as well as Go Native or anything in this field and can cause a small surprise. Punjabi saves his best for Cheltenham and it's a lot weaker race than last year, could go very close. Very hit and miss though and I'll probably have a saver on Punjabi. Starluck 1pt EW @ 12/1 StanJames Punjabi 0.5pt Win @ 7/1 StanJames 16:00 I've got the obvious feeling that Garde Champetre should win this, however, I do like the chances of Heads OnThe Ground at big big odds. Won this 3 year ago and although hasn't been the same since then, every dog can have it's day (again). Pulled up last time out but is obviously a horse that likes Cheltenham. Weird jockey booking going on with the Bolger yard and with Paul Carberry on board, that is definitely no negative at all. Small bet, but one that could pay huge dividends. 0.25pt EW @ 33/1 SJ 16:40 Quevega has an absence to overcome and that injury sustained in France which is a concern but won so comfortably here last year that it has to be considered again to win this comfortably. Was running at a top-class level before it's French adventure, but has gone incredibly well fresh in the past and that shouldn't be seen as a concern. Wouldn't be running here if still feeling the effects of an injury and with Ruby aboard, the yard obviously mean business. Really think this can win well. 1pt Win @ 2/1 Bet365

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 CHARACTER BUILDING 2.40 Cheltenham. 0.5 points each way. Capable on his day and has no trip and ground concerns. This track suits him in my opinion and with getting in off a mark of 145, it's a little high, but shouldn't stop him if in the mood.

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 BLACKSTAIRMOUNTAIN 1.30 Cheltenham. 0.5 points each way. Improving type, as many in this race are, but I think this race will suit him and he has the class to go close. Couldn't ask for a better jockey and the ground's no concern. Should be able to give the short favourite a big run for it's money.

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 I'm concentrating on Southwell today, but I've had one bet at Cheltenham.......... 2.40 Nenaphur Collonges, EW at 22/1 BOG with Stan James. Terrific Cheltenham record.........4 runs, finished 2113. Has won in a big field, has won at the Festival, has won coming back off a break, and is still fairly lightly raced He's probably handicapped to his ability now and there's bound to be a few in the race who are well handicapped but will they act here at the Festival in a big field hurly burly chase ?

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 Supreme Novices Hurdle I find it hard to see past Dunguib after watching the video form but favourites have a poor record in this race and there are alternatives at decent prices that may be as good, have potential and are just waiting to spring a surprise. Oscar Whisky is one of them, kindly advised by BTP early doors and I'm on at 20-1. Unbeaten in 4 starts but none in graded company, definitely on an upwards curve and has the potential to take a race like this. The other one I like is Flat Out from Willie Mullins yard. The Irish have a good record in this race, it has won its last 3 races, although only one was a hurdles race. Bags of potential and too big at 20-1. Selections - Oscar Whisky and Flat Out Arkle Chase I personally feel Somersby is a bit overrated and felt the nothing of a race it won last time out was not very strong. There were 3 in line and all 3 were rowing away early on before Somersby powered clear. I fancy Sizing Europe strongly and think all the talk of how it would have been beaten by Capt Cee Bee is all ifs and buts, fact is that one fell and Sizing Europe stormed clear for a convincing win. I also like Sports Line, definitely went off to fast last time out to get picked off by Sizing Europe's stablemate but sat off a decent pace and ridden more patiently it has every chance. I rate Capt Cee Bee but don't fancy it as much as these 2 mentioned. Selections - Sizing Europe and Sports Line Champion Hurdle I can see Go Native cruising through the field like a hot knife through butter, menacingly looking like Harchibald but actually finding a turn of foot to go and win the race rather than downing tools. Final hurdle has been moved nearer the winning post which is a plus in my book, less of a run in between the last hurdle and the post. Needs to be given the perfect ride. I'm on it at 12's and also on Punjabi, that is an uncomplicated horse and will peak at the right time, a very live danger. I like Khyber Kim and Paddy Brennan seemed ecstatic with the horse when winning at Cheltenham previously. A real tactical race with so many held up late for a run but I feel Go Native could be the real deal. Selections - Go Native and Punjabi

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 1330 Dunguib Evs 1600 Garde Champetre 9/4 Win Double, Pays 11/2 seen the arguments about dunguib not finding anything off the bridle in his first bumper, the dodgy jumping, and the unsuitable ground....it still does not put me off, and is the most confident cheltenham bet i have put on since danoli, cannot fail to be impressed and of course has won here to boot. garde champetre and nina carberry are different class. was mighty impressive in this last year, won last 5 out of 5 over cd. say no more.

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 The Package is the bet of the day for me in the William Hill Chase :ok Also in that race, i cant let Officier de Reserve go unbacked at 44.0 win and 9.8 for a place. Venetia had some great results in the handicaps here last year and seems to have trained her horses to peak at this time of year again. He is undoubtedly well treated with the concern being that this is his seasonal debut. he has gone well fresh in the past though.

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 1.30 Dunguib Should win this on his form so far over in Ireland, and will go off a warm favourite and will also be hard to beat but there will be others who have better value in this market, Menorah could be the answer at a decent price for the Hobbs team and is a lb down on his defeat to Lush Life LTO. Advice Back Dunguib £10 Win @ Evs W/Blue Sq & Menorah £2 E/W @ 12/1 W/VC. And will be playing these to hopefully get Dunguib beat Others to be wary of Oscar Whiskey 1/1 over conditions £2 E/W @ 12/1 W/Coral Flat Out 1/1 £1 E/W @ 20/1 W/Betfred Blackstairmountain 1/1 £2 E/W @ 12/1 W/Coral.

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 2.05 Sizing Europe Looks to have a great chance in the second race of the first day and could get the Irish off to a winning start, And is 10lbs down on his defeat to Hardy Eustace at punchestown in 2008, Ran off the same mark when coming 4/9 runners but that was on heavy ground so that could be excused and looks to go off at a decent price, Woolcombe Folly Will go off a big price but could see him placing here and won in October 2008 off a 2lbs higher mark and came back this year to win by a nose on his return and his switch to the bigger obstacles. Advice back Sizing Europe £4 E/W @ 7/1 W/BlueSq & Woolcombe Folly £1 E/W @ 22/1 W/Bet365. One to keep a eye on Riverside Theatre who is 1/1 over these conditions also off a higher weight than today. £3 E/W @ 15/2 W/Blue SQ

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 I really fancied Dunguib and thought he might be a class apart, although he wasn't given the greatest ride if it was good enough it would have got there and it wasn't. Just goes to show why it's dangerous to back odds on in top class races.

Re: Cheltenham - Tuesday 15th March 2010 :notworthy Sizing Europe :notworthy Cruised through that race and was still on the bridle when others were rowing away. A personal favourite of mine and so happy to see him win and make up for that Champion Hurdle race that it should have won. Big winner for me today, lumped on it. :nana
