Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia Australia's most famous race the Melbourne Cup is on next Tuesday and there are many UK horses high up in betting and time for you knowledgeable punters out there to help us Aussies sort out the best British horses. All The Good won our second biggest handicap a couple of week's ago the Caulfield Cup over 2400m and Mad Rush was a very unlucky 4th. Bauer then won Country Cup called the Geelong Cup quite easily and he is now in 24th order for the Melbourne Cup and may get a run. Bookies have Septimus favourite and from all accounts he is much better than All The Good and Mad Rush. Septimus is going to have to do what only 2 horses have done in a very long time and that is win the Cup carrying more than 58kgs, and he has 58.5kgs which is a big ask in our racing, and he is not real value considering. Mad Rush was a super run in the 2400m Caulfield Cup over 2400m and he escaped a weight penalty. Anyone care to give their thoughts on the International invaders to our shores? They look far superior to our stayers.

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia With the scratching of local horse and last years winner Efficient, it is hard to see any of the locals winning the cup this year. The local trainers are also conceding that the imported horses have a big advantage are a class above any of the locals.

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia I think Septimus is a huge lay. I just cannot have him. Yeats was hugely dissapointing for O'Brien in this last year and I just reckon the weight will bring Septimus down in this. Not quite sure whether O'Briens horses are in the same form either, ok Yeats won a G1 the other day but I get the feeling alot of his horses have had enough for the season already. Would actually fancy All The Good abit more even though I hate backing Godolphins' horses. I remember seeing him win the Ebor and he hacked up, could go close in my opinion.

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia All The Good update Caulfield Cup winner All The Good is in doubt for next week's Melbourne Cup after being found lame at Sandown on Thursday. Trainer Saaed Bin Suroor said he discovered the horse was 'not right' in his off foreleg and will await scans before deciding whether to run the stallion in the $5.5 million race. All The Good and Yellowstone will have vet inspections on Friday morning. "These things happen, they're animals. What can we do?" bin Suroor said. All The Good's injury comes a day after last year's winner Efficient was withdrawn due to a fetlock injury. Fellow international Bauer's chances of getting a run in the race will improve should All The Good miss out.

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia Zagreb out of Cup Trainer David Hayes has conceded defeat in his race against the clock to have talented stayer Zagreb fit for this year's Melbourne Cup. Hayes will on Thursday afternoon scratch Zagreb from this Saturday's Mackinnon Stakes after the four-year-old pulled up sore following track work at Flemington on Thursday.

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia Funny that about All the Good, he was backed by one punter yesterday for $15,000 Aud at odds of 13/1. He is now at elevens. The bet was taken by Betstar. Maybe it was a smoke screen by the all blue...

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia My bet is Mad Rush , trained by Cumani who has had two goes before and now knows what it takes to win. A master in setting his horses for races and to be ridden by one of Oz best riders Damien Oliver

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia Be great to get some English and Irish input on your horses and who you consider to be the best. How much better than All The Good, Mad Rush, Bauer and Profound Beauty is Septimus? If all the international horses raced over in the UK in the same race carrting their Melbourne Cup weights on a firm track over 3200m what would be the result?

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia It's hard to have a solid thought on the race as I can oly weigh up 7-8 horses in the race. Septimus is a class horse no doubt he's a geniune group 1 horse and can be argued that he is better than yeats ever was. But he obviously has to give weight to everyone and there's got to be something in the field well handicaped that can give him a race. What is the going like out there? you would of thought it would be to fast to see Septimus at his best imo under top weight. Alessandro Volta I thought was crying out for a longer trip but he was very disapointing in the leger recently but he has no weight to carry in this but will proberly be the ace maker for septimus. I would of thought Honolula is to high in the weights. Yellowstone has to much to find with Septimus. Mad rush gets nearly a stone from septimus has a nice draw and trainer obviously has a great record in the race and I hear that there's been plenty of money for him this week? if this was run over here on good ground then septimus imo would win in a canter. I'd proberly back Mad rush to place and wait to see what the grund was like to see if septimus is worth a win bet. But that's just our runners.. there must be something the auusies are keen on?

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia 2008 Emirates Melbourne Cup A$5,500,000, 3200m: 1 1111 Septimus (10) 58.5 (Sadler's Wells-Caladira): Has come to Australia from Ireland with a big reputation and has won eight of his 12 starts. The distance will pose no trouble for him and he has won on all types of ground. The biggest hurdle for him to overcome will be the weight (58.5kg). No horse has won the race with this much weight since Think Big in 1974. Jockey: Johnny Murtagh. Trainer: Aidan O'Brien. 2 6270 Master O'Reilly (6) 55 (O'Reilly-Without Remorse): Won the Caulfield Cup last year but didn't see out the journey in the Melbourne Cup. Has had a hardened preparation and was doing his best work at the finish when he was seventh in this year's Caulfield Cup: Jockey: Viad Duric. Trainer: Danny O'Brien. 3 4161 Honolulu (24) 54.5 (Montjeu-Cerulean Sky): Lighly raced stayer who has built up a handy record in the United Kingdom and is bred to stay the journey. Won the Doncaster Cup in England at his last start over 3621m. Jockey: Colm O'Donoghue. Trainer: Aidan O'Brien. 4 7946 C'est La Guerre (5) 54 (Shinko King-La Magnefique): Will have his chances improved greatly if there is rain about. He won the New Zealand Derby this year beating home Nom Du Jeu and Red Ruler. Runs of late haven't been too bad. Jockey: Brett Prebble. Trainer: John Sadler. 5 D232 Nom Du Jeu (1) 54 (Montjeu-Prized Gem): Won the AJC Derby this year and has a big reputation. Good second in the Caulfield Cup when finishing off the race better than anything. Dam won over 3200m and can handle most types of tracks. Jockey: Jeff Lloyd. Trainer: Murray Baker. 6 5138 Yellowstone (12) 54 (Rock Of Gibraltar-Love And Affection): He injured his hip last week when he got cast in his box. Trainer says he has fully recovered from this injury but there will be a lingering doubt which won't be known until the race. Jockey: John Egan. Trainer: Jane Chapple-Hyam. 7 9732 Zipping (16) 54 (Danehill-Social Scene): Has finished fourth in the past two runnings of the Melbourne Cup and his latest efforts have been very encouraging including a second placing in the Cox Plate. Has to rate a strong chance here. Jockey: Danny Nikolic. Trainer: John Sadler. 8 2124 Mad Rush (4) 53.5 (Lemon Drop Kid-Revonde): Ran the race of an improver when an unlucky fourth in the Caulfield Cup. Has strong reputation and will be very competitive here. Looks a serious each-way chance. Just needs luck in the running this time. Jockey: Damien Oliver. Trainer: Luca Cumani. 9 3835 Ice Chariot (22) 53 (Semipaletinsk-Snow Chariot): Finished a dour fourth in Saturday's Mackinnon Stakes and could give some cheek here. Failed in this race last year but should be given another chance to make amends. Former Queensland Derby winner. Jockey: Michael Rodd. Trainer: Ron Maund. 10 1870 Viewed (9) 53 (Scenic-Lovers Knot): Trained by the master Bart Cummings but form of late has not been inspiring and will require major improvement to even figure close. Hard to have. Jockey: Steven Arnold. Trainer: Bart Cummings. 11 3158 Littorio (17) 52.5 (Bellotto-Our Centessa): Good fifth in the Caulfield Cup when hitting the line strongly. Also won the Turnbull Stakes three starts back. Merits strong consideration: Jockey: Steven King. Trainer: Nigel Blakiston. 12 8271 Bauer (13) 52 (Halling-Deli's Gray): Winner of the Geelong Cup in fine style and will give punters a strong representation for their money. Has loads of stamina and will be best suited if the race turns into a real grinding finish. Jockey: Corey Brown. Trainer: Luca Cumani. 13 1540 Boundless (20) 52 (Van Nistelrooy-Nothing Less): From a strong staying family and won the New Zealand Oaks this year. Finished a close fourth in the Kelt Capital Stakes at Hastings last month which clinched her trip over for this race. Jockey: Greg Childs. Trainer: Stephen McKee. 14 2541 Gallopin (21) 52 (Pins-Carla Rossi): New Zealand-owned galloper who is lightly raced. Nice win last time in the Moonee Valley Cup and has come into best form at the perfect time. Don't leave out of combinations. Jockey: James Winks. Trainer: Danny O'Brien. 15 5955 Gunyo (8) 52 (O'Reilly-River Century): Well-bred type but recent form has comprised only battling efforts and will need a turbo charge added to gear to have a winning chance. Hard to have. Jockey: Brad Rawiller. Trainer: Lou Luciani. 16 2504 Zarita (7) 52 (Pentire-Gin Player): Not all that far away when a good fourth in the Cox Plate last time. New Zealand-bred mare who was dual Group 1 winner as a three-year-old. Has prospects. Jockey: Dwayne Dunn. Trainer: Pat Hyland. 17 0915 Newport (15) 51.5 (Encosta De Lago-Sibellenne): Prefers rain-affected ground. Won the Metropolitan in Sydney but this has not generally been a good guide to this race. Solid effort in the Moonee Valley Cup to finish fifth. Jockey: Nash Rawiller. Trainer: Paul Perry. 18 2113 Profound Beauty (2) 51.5 (Danehill-Diamond Trim): In excellent form and from stable of legendary Irish trainer Dermot Weld who has already prepared two Melbourne Cup winners. She has been working in fine style since arriving in Melbourne. Ready to run a big race. Jockey: Glen Boss. Trainer: Dermot Weld. 19 2846 Red Lord (14) 51.5 (Redoute's Choice-Dame Cath): Finished fifth in the Sydney Cup last season. Has been going fair races without any brilliant. Take on trust. Jockey: Nicholas Hall. Trainer: Anthony Cummings. 20 7698 Varavees (23) 51.5 (Kahyssi-Dense Bretonne): French mare whose recent form is not all that encouraging. However, she has been a Group 3 winner and Group 1 placegetter. Respect. Jockey: Craig Williams. Trainer: Richard Gibson. 21 1860 Prize Lady (18) 51 (Prized-Pen Bal Lady: Has won two past runnings of the Auckland Cup. Will have chances improved if there is any rain about. One of few NZ-trained runners in the field and can be competitive Will get the distance. Jockey: Mark Sweeney. Trainer: Graeme Sanders. 22 6460 Alessandro Volta (11) 50.5. (Montjeu-Venture Highway): Another runner from the powerful Aidan O'Brien stable and will probably be up on the speed from the outset. Others preferred though and win will come as major surprise. Jockey: Wayne Lordan. Trainer: Aidan O'Brien. 23 4323 Barbaricus (3) 50.5 (Lion Hunter-Light Of Erin): Brave third in the Caulfield Cup and top run in the Mackinnon Stakes on Saturday. Comes in well at the weights here and not the least of chances. Has to be watched. Jockey: Stephen Baster. Trainer: Danny O'Brien. 24 5621 Moatize (19) 50 (Danehill Dancer-Shezabeel): Made the field belatedly with a determined win in Saturday's Saab Quality. Trained by the Cups King Bart Cummings so needs to be respected on that score alone. Jockey: Clare Lindop. Trainer: Bart Cummings. Came across this thought it might be useful :ok

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia Two I would look at from our (Euro) challenge would be Mad Rush and at a real price, the wayward Alessandro Volta in first time blinkers. Mad Rush seems a more obvious one and Cumani has seemingly targetted this race having been second last year. I liked Mad Rush last season and he was unfortunate to bump into Hi Calypso on one ocassion in a handicap as that went onto win a group 2 and clearly tha two were well handicapped that day. Indeed he bumped into a couple this season in punjabi who was very much well in going back to the flat, pair a long way clear and then at asc. where he run a fine race only to just fail to catch the useful Sugar Ray who has since changed hands for a huge price at a sale (600,000 ish?) Then he showed he could go on soft ground so if there is a dowpour that shouldnt be a problem when routing the field in the normally competitive Newton cup and some fair sorts behind like Young Mick and even subsequent group winner Buccelatti. Then stepping up in class and in trip he only just failed in a group 2 in france which is very much respected form before the eye catching effort lto in an Aussie race for which I knwo little about what that form is. He looks the pick of the Cumnai pair, Bauer being a horse who has shown huge improvement (just 60 rated at one point) but one who might not have pounds in hand on the handicap like Mad Rush maybe has, not that Mad Rush necessarily has mass in hand, far from it but he looks the type to appreciate the nature of the race. Whereas the classy Septimus looks more an out and out stayer these days, Mad Rush has more of a natural cruising speed which should enable him to travel that little bit better and then pounce late on. Goes on any ground too. The other horse I mentioned at a price is Alessandro Volta. O'Brien came close last year when in third with a similar type in Mahler, lightly weighted 3 year old. Now AV is well known to be very wayward and its very possible the ocassion could get to him but there is no disputing he has class. He won the ling derby trial with subsequent group 2 and royal asc. winner, campanologist behind. Then he was far from disgraced in the epsom derby, plugging onto be sixth before finishing third in the ire. derby (murtagh's pick ahead of eventual winner frozen fire) when he went completely left at the finish and taking out a couple of rivals which was to mean he was to be demoted to fourth. In the group 1 in long. he plugged on again to be a respectful sixth before a poor effort on the leger in softer conditions which despite being a montjeu, he hasnt relished so far in his career. Again similarly to Mad Rush, he should be able to travel better than the more out and out stayers like septimus and honolulu. There are doubts about temperament and also how will he be ridden as he could be made into a pacemaker. However I think he is around 40/1 over here which is a biggish price for a horse with his natural ability, afterall officially by bhb ratings over here he is 115 rated whereas mad rush, bauer and profound beauty all ahead of him the weights are lesser than that.

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia

Surprised at the 33/1 available for the two Bart Cummings trained horses:loon
I thought that, he's won this 11 times hasn't he. I don't have the foggiest about Australian racing, however, I spent a little time digging out details of the recent winners and it seems New Zealander's do well in this race with Efficient, Ethereal, Brew, Jezabeel and Might and Power all landing the prize in recent years. It doesn't seem to be a race in which rank outsiders do particularly well. Although Efficient (16/1), Delta Blues (17/1), and Brew (14/1) all won at fair odds, the likes of Makybe Diva (who has won this three times), Media Puzzle, Ethereal, Rogan Josh, Jezebeel and Might and Power were all priced up at 9/1 or less. Those carrying low weights also seem to be favoured and only one winner has carried over 9 stone in the last eleven runnings. With all that in mind I'm backing Nom du Jeu. Murray Baker's colt, like many of these, has stamina to prove here, but finished second behind Godolphin's All the Good in the Caulfield Cup last time out. He had tomorrows opponents Mad Rush, Master O'Reilly and Viewed, amonst others, behind that day, and clearly comes into the race in good heart. Ladbrokes 8/1 EW.

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia I've got 2 x each way tickles and a small rfc on C'est la Guerre - won the NZ Derby earlier in year with 2 of these behind, including Nom De Guerre, who has ran consistently well and looks a good yardstick. Think C'Est La Guerre will improve for the step up in trip. Moatize - Trained by Cup King Bart Cummings, is bottom weight, and won a Group 3 at the weekend. I am concerned about the race coming too soon, but can't not bet a Group 3 winner who is bottom weight. I have went for 2 horses from down there, as I find the Euro raiders priced too short by our esteemed Euro bookies.

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia

Surprised at the 33/1 available for the two Bart Cummings trained horses:loon

Cummings nets twelfth Melbourne Cup as Viewed prevails in photo

Andrew Dietz

Report: Australia, Tuesday Flemington: Melbourne Cup, 2m, turf, Group 1 TRAINER Bart Cummings landed his twelfth Melbourne Cup as Viewed held-off a late charge by Luca Cumani's second-string Bauer in a thrilling finish to the Group 1 handicap at Flemington. Viewed, who returned at 46.50 on the TAB, was pushed to the head of affairs by jockey Blake Shinn as the field turned for home and although the fast-finishing Bauer pushed him all the way, the photo revealed the five-year-old had clinched the race by a nose for his legendary handler. C'est La Guerre was two lengths back in third, with Master O'Reilly completing the placings in fourth. Aidan O'Brien's trio Alessandro Volta, Septimus and Honolulu had guaranteed a strong pace by leading the field along for the majorityof the race, but as they swung round the turn their challenge faded allowing Viewed to surge clear. It looked like Viewed had the race sewn up but Bauer, who traded at a low of 1.56 in running on Betfair, came out of the pack to set up a photo finish. The judge delivered the verdict and Cumani, who's pre-race favourite Mad Rush managed only seventh, was left to suffer the agony of successive Melbourne Cup seconds after Purple Moon filled the runner-up spot last year. A clearly emotional Shinn Shinn told At The Races: "It hasn't sunk in yet. What a thrill. "I couldn't have been happier (with our passage through the race). It's important to get this horse to settle because he's a hard-going horse. "It was important to get him in a good rhythm and the speed was genuine throughout. "I was very confident as I had a lot of horse so I was able to move when I would have liked to. "I got there way too early but he was travelling that strongly. When I pushed the button he had a very good turn of foot, particularly on this good ground. "You cannot underestimate Bart Cummings." "There is a bakers dozen coming up next year, always look ahead boys," said Cummings. "It's nice to win a race like this. It's a race that everyone in Australia likes to win. "I thought it was all over in the last 50 yards and then I thought I wasn't sure. I couldn't tell." Winning owner Dato Tan Chin Nam was enjoying his fourth success in the race following the victories of Think Big, a back-to-back winner in 1974 and 1975, and Saintly in 1996. He said: "I'm very happy that the horse won. He put up a gutsy run and I thought he had lost for moment. "It was my fourth win and now I'm happy not to win any more but if it happens again, I willnot complain!" Dermot Weld's Profound Beauty finished next best of the European raiders, claiming fifth under Glen Boss. The rider said: "I had the perfect run. I tracked the winner the whole race and I had his measure for a long way before we straightened up. "When I asked her to extend, she really felt the ground, especially over the last furlong, and she didn't want to stretch out. "I've got no doubts she will be back next year and very hard to beat." Bauer's stablemate Mad Rush claimed seventh place for Cumani and jockey Damien Oliver. "He didn't quite stay the trip today," said Oliver. "He moved into the race nicely on the turn but when Bauer made his run, he kept going and my bloke sort of came to the end of his run at about the 200-metre mark." French runner Varevees was 14th while Septimus eventually faded into 18th of the 22 runners. Murtagh said: "He might not be the right horse for the race really. "Everyone says you need a bit of speed over here and he got into a nice position after going down the straight. "We were going a nice even trip all the way but when we turned into the straight, they went by us as if we were stopped." Alessandro Volta was 20th while Honolulu was last of the 21 finishers with Gallopin pulled up in the straight.

Re: $5,500,000 Melbourne Cup - Tuesday November 4th in Australia Aiden O'Brien currently facing a steward's enquiry as to why his 3 horses set such a ridiculous pace in the race. International trainers were warned before the the race that Australian racing does not tolerate horses being used as pacemakers. Expecting plenty of fall out from this one.
