As a general rule, though, in my time there has been a distinct shift in recent years to the Prem sides doing better and the cream rising to the top, though as always it's worth looking at who has some bigger events on the immediate horizon and may take the chance to rest bodies. Have to say it's a pretty depressing day for gambling with the news overnight of the arrests for match-fixing - I owe an apology to the posters on here who I chuckled at when they suggested there was something in these rumours. Having said that, it's still tricky to work out from the Telegraph undercover video what events were being covered - a booking in the first ten minutes is closer to the spot-fixing that you get in cricket. A further annoyance is the Treasury is looking at taxing spread betting winnings - perhaps an indication they have fixed-odds betting in their sights as well, and the 10% tax on stakes or winnings. They also drew 2-2 with Bamber Bridge this week in the County Cup, losing on pens.

kevshat
Re: England > Weekend > FA Trophy 1st Round Nov 30-Dec 1 Does Staines' 7-0-1 home record stand up to scrutiny? If it does they could be worth a play at 3/1. John Still hasn't actually named our side for the weekend but he's hinted on a couple of occasions that he'll play the development squad and youngsters and we've cancelled Saturday's youth team game today which further strengthens the idea we'll be going down there with kids. As it stands we're short of defenders young or old because Lacey, McNulty, Parry and Henry all have knocks and surely won't be risked. Guttridge is suspended but he wouldn't have played anyway. We're bringing 2 defenders in on loan today. Don't know who but whoever it is won't have long to bed in before the game. We've got some talent in our youth team but if Staines' record is as good as it looks on paper I wouldn't think they'd be 3/1 shots.
kevshat
Re: England > Weekend > FA Trophy 1st Round Nov 30-Dec 1 We now know the loans in are Alfie Mawson, Joe Davis and Pelly Ruddock from Brentford, Port Vale and West Ham respectively. Only two can play on Saturday though. Furthermore JJ O'Donnell and Jim Stevenson - 2 who I thought would be certain to play on Saturday - have gone out on loan which means we could be even younger than originally anticipated on Saturday. Shipsupstreets
Re: England > Weekend > FA Trophy 1st Round Nov 30-Dec 1 Does Staines' 7-0-1 home record stand up to scrutiny? I'd say not, although they do have some appeal. They're a decent side and heading in the right direction, but they have been pretty lucky at home, only once winning a game by more than one goal when they beat Boreham Wood 3-1 (with two Wood own goals). There aren't too many dominant performances in there and the '7' part of the form guide bears little relationship to performances. But they play good football, have plenty of spirit, and have one dangerous striker in Louie Theophanous, while there is a slight accident-waiting-to-happen feel about some of their defending. The midfield works tremendously hard - or at least it did early season, as Marcus Gayle has been sounding off in the press about how they are simply not pressing the opposition any more. I'd expect some sort of response on Saturday and that might be enough if 3/1 is on offer and you send a young side.

Wrexham lost money on every one of the earlier rounsd last year. The prize money, for the bigger clubs, isn't that great either. http://www.thefa.com/fa-trophy/more/fa-trophy-prize-fund I know we will be resting players against Gresley as well. However, I am sure every manager puts out a team they believe can win. We didn't play a full team until the semi-final.

Fact is we won't make money from the competition until the semi finals at best by which time we've had to move five league matches - six if we win that semi final - which creates even more loss of revenue not to mention the extra games although I'm not one of these who thinks that's a massive problem. It is marginally better now the final is in March but the sad fact is the way this competition is structured those playing for something in the league will only get interested if they crawl their way into the semi final. Shipsupstreets
Re: England > Weekend > FA Trophy 1st Round Nov 30-Dec 1 Unfortunately my early-doors takes on Chester, Forest Green Rovers and Dover Athletic have all been skinned a bit. 17/20 Chester and 11/10 FGR were excellent prices but they are only marginal takes now. Dover are still available at a 21/20 (in a touch) and that's still value - they perform well away from home and look stronger in all departments. East Thurrock have improved in recent weeks, and they have a pretty decent attack with David Bryant and the ever reliable Jason Hallet functioning well together, and they can always throw on Leon McKenzie from the bench. But in central areas things are a bit soft, and despite a draw at Hendon (which they should have won) and a back-to-wall win at Met Police (which on a different night they could have lost), Dover are slight value at this price. Northwich Victoria away at Leamington (7/2 BetVictor) Worth catching the drift here, I think. Leamington should win - man for man, they are much stronger - but home performances have been on the insipid side this season, and at home their six goals for is the worst in the section. Lee Ashcroft's Northwich are a hard-working side who perhaps suffer from an unusual formation and a lack of goals, but when they get it right they can be very good indeed, as when they beat Nantwich in the previous round and also won 1-0 in the league at Darlo earlier this month. There's not a lot in the price but enough for me to play.

Shipsupstreets
Re: England > Weekend > FA Trophy 1st Round Nov 30-Dec 1 I've bought total goals in the Daventry/Maidenhead United match at 2.95. Maidenhead rarely do clean sheets and they'll have to make do with a thoroughly patched-up back line. In fact, it's hard to name their central defensive partnership at the moment, with Mark Nisbet definitely out, and strong doubts about Matt Ruby and Curtis Ujah. Alfie Mawson has also gone from the defensive unit. Daventry - who've been brilliant defensively - have lost some of their tightness at the back and they haven't kept a clean sheet for nine games in all competitions. They are actually a decent bet to win this, given Maidenhead's problems at the back, but I think goals is the way to go for me. Another total goals buy is Lincoln/Staly at 2.9. It looks a bit of a fringe Lincoln side being put out for this one, and they don't score many but they'll fancy their chances against a Staly who almost always concede away (one clean sheet this season on their travels) and tomorrow must make do with a debutant loanee between the sticks. MPLouis
Re: England > Weekend > FA Trophy 1st Round Nov 30-Dec 1 There are two local derbies I like the look of in the FA trophy today. Halifax v Guiseley Conference v Conference North. Both are 11th in their league. Guiseley are in better form at the moment. Guiseley have a good record at Halifax, they've won one and drawn two in their last three visits (both clubs were in the Conference North until last season). Guiseley +0.5 2.35 Pinnacle Basingstoke v Havant and Waterlooville Two Conference South sides. Basingstoke are in better form in the league but Havant tend to do well at Basingstoke, they've won two and drawn two in their last five games there. Havant +0.5 2.05 sbobet

Shipsupstreets
Re: England > Weekend > FA Trophy 1st Round Nov 30-Dec 1 Good on the spreads and pretty rubbish on the fixed odds for me - Daventry/Maidenhead only made up 1 for a 1.95 loss but Lincoln & Staly shared six goals for a 3.1 point profit. Chester, FGR and Dover all failed on the fixed odds, along with the longshot Northwich. Excelllent call by addpea on BPA and a pair of good calls on Guiseley and Havant by MP Louis.
