  1. Re: Lingfield 8th Aug (AW & Turf) (eve) Pretty poor 3 races on the AW tonight....... I hate these mixed meeting - why do they bother ? They have mixed meetings every 3 or 4 days at Ling - why the hell don't they just have a turf meeting then an AW meeting a few days later. Anyway I'm desperate to pick something for BBotD..........so my panic selection is........ 8.10 Ling - Dawson Creek - EW Dual CD winner comes back off a four month break - 2 of his last 3 wins have been when coming back off a break Won this race last year and is 4lbs higher in the weights but has been placed off higher marks since his last win Bad news and Good news re the trainer - he's only had one winner this season - the good news is that his winner was today ! Seb Saunders booked

  3. Re: Ascot (Shergar Cup) - 8th Aug

Just had a look in me paper and its on the round course!
thanks chris ! in that case - Dunn'o - Asc 2.20 He normally only wins at Sandown, but Ascot is a bit similar and he has had one good run here, finishing 2nd in a big field handicap. Best when he's front running around a bend where he can slow things up then rattle for home in the straight - he's got Callan up, who should know his style and know the track which might help. I like this horse - he strikes me as a battler
  4. Re: Ascot (Shergar Cup) - 8th Aug

2.20 Ascot Dunno - last ran in the Hunt cup at this track and was soundly beaten but prior to that had been in good heart this season and this race looks more winnable than the Hunt Cup. 4 lbs higher than latest win at Sandown and showed last September when placed here that he handles the track. 8/1 SJ, EW.
I was going to put up Dunn'o as well.........but with one proviso - that the race is on the Round Mile not the Straight Mile. I wouldn't fancy him on the straight mile......... Neither the Post nor the Life is telling us which track it's on Does anybody know ?
  5. Re: Finding your Niche.. I read quite a few books when I first got interested, back in the 80s I bought a few American books about US racing and that was a real eye-opener. Most of the British books I'd read were about 'handicapping' - lbs for distance beaten, that kind of thing, course descriptions, conformation, trainer styles When i read the US books it was all about speed ratings, rail-huggers, wide runners ( like Greyhound racing !), splits, uncontested leads etc...... When I came back to racing a couple of years ago I noted that this US 'handicapping' had really infiltrated over here.

  6. Re: CD Winners - Again ! Thanks mate..........that's very interesting ! :ok Must admit that I hadn't considered that certain trainers might have a better 'CD winner' record than others - but I guess there is a logic to it in that trainers will all have their individual quirks about where they enter their horses and some of them might put more store by their horse having won at a track before. I'll have to have a think about this next time I return to 'CD winners'......

  7. Re: Finding your Niche..

I agree with that' date=' i appreciate alot of people wouldnt like there selections being questioned, but me personally, i'd like to see if there's things i'm doing wrong and if someone far more knowledgeable than me thinks im talking sh*te, i'd like them to tell me.[/quote'] I wasn't really thinking of posting that someone had made a mistake or done something wrong..........I mean, it's all about opinions ! I was thinking more along the lines of, say .......someone putting up Pegasus in the 3.30.......and someone else posting that they thought he might not get the trip or pointing out that all his wins have been on right hand tracks, something like that. I can see though that it might get 'personal' if it turned into some kind of gloating or clever clogs-ness.........in which case we're probably better off without. Might give it a go one day and see what happens............:loon
  8. Re: Racing post Noticed a couple of new things on the Life site.......... They've started putting a link to 'last years winner' at the bottom of each race and a 'History' link in the top right corner which links to the last few runnings of the race..... Not much I know, but at least they're improving the site....... Have you noticed any new features on any of the other sites as they try to poach RP viewers ?

  9. Re: Finding your Niche.. Opposite to some of the posts above, I think I know a lot about the structure of racing, how races are framed, - I often find myself answering question in the stickies like 'what does penalty value mean' or as to how handicapping works. What I'm not so good on is day to day racing, settling down to follow a particular type of race. Already this season I've decided to follow - Group One races, all group races, 2YO pattern races, all 5 furlong races, all weather races, Irish racing. Every few weeks i seem to change my mind, pick something new, spends hours and hours researching it..........err, then change my mind again................:lol I just get flummoxed by the amount of racing............:cry As for the forum I also tend to post mainly in BBotD and sometimes the meeting thread - usually if it's an evening AW meeting. I've also noticed in the last couple of months a worrying development in that if I have a few losers on the trot in BBotD, I stop posting for a few days hoping my luck might change.............:loon I love to see the 'debate' or general racing threads, - but there's not many of them. I think that's the main drawback of the forum, but I guess you can't force it and I'm as guilty as anyone else for not starting 'topic' threads I also sometimes think I'd like to disagree with someone's selection in a meeting thread and post why I don't think it would win.......in a friendly manner !.........but that doesn't seem to be the done thing........mostly the meeting threads lack any 'discussion'........just a list of selections Hmm..........ramnling a bit now as befits someone who's nearly 60. It's this internettyweb malarky..........:lol:lol

  10. Re: Kempton 5th Aug (AW) (eve)

6.35 Just looking at the latest odds on the Life site, Sovereignty 5/1, Feasible 10/1......that does seem a big gap for under a length with the weight turnaround. I guess the 0 from 19 is putting people off Feasible - is he one of the herd's natural followers ? I'm sure a lot of horses just 'know their place' in the herd pecking order and lack the gumption to put themselves forward as a leader.
Well - Feasible ran a fine race, and obviously he's not a follower - he was sticking his head out gamely amongst about 4 horses in a line but was mugged by something coming wide on the outside I suspect he's just handicapped right to his limit - on lbs and lengths him and Sovereignty ran almost exectly the same race as last time, they're probably both just handicapped exactly right to finish in that imaginary line across the track.
  11. Re: Best bet of day 5th aug Kempton 8.35 - Assail - win Good win last time in all-aged company beating some AW regulars who win their share. The second has come out and won since Gone up 7 lbs for that win, but won by nearly 3L, so that seems fair enough CD winner, back amongst the 3 year olds, should have a good chance of following up. There's some lightly raced types from big yards - Godolphin, Cecil, Hannon - in the field, but my fellow has the form in the book

  13. Re: Kempton 5th Aug (AW) (eve) Yeah..........Kempton Wednesday night on RUK ! Well........the one i fancy for an EW interest is Sign Of The Cross, currently 14/1. He's stuck his head out 4 times in 24 races, which is a good record in this level of race. All his recent wins have been sellers or claimers but I like his form from 2 runs ago - 8th, beaten 6L over CD in a Class 4 handicap. I reckon there's about a 3L difference between handicap grades, so dropping 2 classes would put him right there as being competitive in class 6. He's dropped 4 lbs since that race, which gives him another length

  14. Re: Chepstow 4th Aug 4.40 - Phantom Whisper - EW This one ran in the Stewards Cup on Saturday and wasn't disgraced, finishing 7th at 5 lengths. ( he was my pick for the race.......:@) I'm gonna give him another chance today. Obviously he drops in class - this is a decent race but it ain't the Stewards Cup He's won on soft ground and he's won here at Chepstow. If you look at his record the standout problem is that he's never won at over 6 furlongs in a 44 race career. He has run 4 times at 7 furlongs and never been closer than 5th. But all those 4 races were Class 2 handicaps at the back end of last season. Since then he's dropped about 10 lb in the weights and can now run in this class 3. His run style suggests he should get 7F as he usually gets behind in sprints then runs on late. And on this soft ground they might not be going fast enough to make it a real test of stamina at the trip. Should be an EW price and 9 runners as of now - good EW bet.

  15. Re: BBOTD - Monday 3rd Aug Windsor 7.30 - Dear Maurice - win Dual CD winner who's had a poor run but his mark has now slipped back to just 3 lbs above his last win. Second here a couple of weeks ago showed he might be returning to form, tho' it might just have been the first time visor........in which case I might be barking up the wrong tree Still - trainer hit form with 3 winners on Saturday and he's worth a chance in a poor race. Down to just 6 runners now and a potentially false favourite in a handicap debutant who's maiden win doesn't look that great.

  16. Re: Best bet of the day - Sun 2nd Aug Chester 3.30 - Beckermet - EW Taking a chance with an old boy here, 7 years old He's won several times at Listed level, is a course and distance winner and is top rated on BHA ratings. 'taking a chance' because he's not run well lately, but he's had a four month break and you're taking a chance that he's come back fresh and raring to go. Trainer doen't seem to have many runners but he'd had a winner, second and third from 3 runners in the last fortnight so hopefully his string is pretty straight and the absence from the track won't inconvenience the selection

  17. Re: Best bet of the day - Sat 1st Aug Ling 7.55 - Piccadilly Filly - win Tries to break her maiden at the fourth time of asking. She's the top rated of those with Official Ratings and gets the fillies allowance. Drops back to 5 furlongs today after 3 runs at 6 furlongs. Last time out, at this track, she showed good early speed and was well in the lead at the 5 pole before fading. Hopefully they'll go to the front early and try to make all

  18. Re: Lingfield (Evening) 1st August

You're right, the 20:25 is dire but in a funny sort of way its nice to find the winner of these races as it is group races, or am I just weird? :unsure
I've been engrossed in Goodwood all week for a competition elsewhere but found myself pining for the dark winter nights and AW racing at Lingfield and Wolves...........:lol
  19. Re: Lingfield (Evening) 1st August Only looked at the 2 races on the all weather track 7.55 - Piccadilly Filly - win Tries to break her maiden at the fourth time of asking. She's the top rated of those with Official Ratings and gets the fillies allowance. Drops back to 5 furlongs today after 3 runs at 6 furlongs. Last time out, at this track, she showed good early speed and was well in the lead at the 5 pole before fading.Hopefully they'll go to the front early and try to make all. 8.25 - Play Up Pompey - EW This is a shocker of a race.Play Up Pompey has 3 CD wins to his name (for some reason the Post don't have a CD by his name !.......) All those wins have been in this type of race - Class 6 handicap - and he runs off a mark lower than for all 3 wins. He's obviously in decline but finds himself as bottom weight against a lot of horses who've never won and probably never will. He can probably run a bad race and still get placed by default

  20. Re: BTP's Stat of the Day I'm gonna have to look again at this one...........my short list of 2 are drawn 5 and 6..........:@ Just looking at the card on The Life site, there are 20 runners, but there are horses with draws of 21 and 22 ?............what's that all about ? How about Extraterrestrial, drawn 20.........he acts with cut in the ground and won that big handicap at Newbury, the Spring Mile ?

  21. Re: CD Winners - Again ! 1 abandonned, 1 non runner..........just left the 4 losers........:loon Totals - stakes 32, P/L ( - 7.37) Gonna pack this in for the time being.........maybe come back during the jumps season. I think maybe jumps courses are more 'course specialist friendly' with the emphasis on stamina.
