  1. Re: Lay of the Day - July 7th Catt 4.30 - Call of Duty - lay Currently fave for the 7 furlong handicap but is on a long losing run Handicapper keeps putting him up for finishing placed, so he's gone up 7 lbs over his last 4 races without winning. Also - they don't know what his trip is - in the last year he's run over 6 furlongs and 16 furlongs and all points in between. Stable don't have many winners on the Flat - 1 from 52 runs in the last 3 seasons. That 1 was the selection back in 2008 on debut On the minus side from the layers point of view is that Hannigan takes the ride...........which, presumably is why he's favourite.

  2. Re: Newmarket 7th july Falmouth If it stays at 8 runners, how about Lahaleeb as an EW punt ? Amongst the 3 older horses, she's the only group one winner and arguably drops in class today after running in top International races against group one colts Acts on good to firm and has had a two month break to get over her globe trotting. There'a view going around that the three year old fillies are not a vintage bunch this year............... Main worry would be that the trip is a bit sharp for her on firm ground........

  3. Re: BBOTD 6th July

    :nana great winner
Cheers mate........ Bit pee'd off that it went off at 9/1..............:loon Must have drifted alarmingly in the 30 mins before the race, I thought i was being clever giving up the BOG to get 7/1..........:spank
  4. Re: Lay Of The Day Selections ~ July 6th Ponte 4.30 - Doctor Parkes Not sure this stiff 6 furlong track will suit him All his wins have been at 5 furlongs. Placed a couple of times at 6F on flat tracks, but might find the uphill finish here too much Also a few front runners who might take each other on - the race could be set up for something coming from the back and there are a couple of CD winning hold up horses lurking here...............

  5. Re: BBOTD 6th July 4.30 Ponte - Cornus - win at 7/1 with Sportingbet In grand form. looking for the hat-trick today This track suits him as he comes late and the uphill finish slows down the front runners, he's a CD winner Up 7 lbs for his last win, but won that handicap by nearly 3 lengths, so should be able to take the extra weight Few front runners in the field today who could take each other on and leave it for a late runner like the selection or good old 'Dickie' to pick up the pieces.

  6. Re: Where do you learn about horseracing? I think a good way to get started would be how I did it At first I was only looking at a basic daily newpaper 'card' with the limited information available. Doing this you're quite likely to be impressed by the betting forecast and the form figures and the jockey/trainer and symbols like C, D, CD, BF etc.........these are the things that distinguish one horse from another on the card. You learn what all these things mean, then how much relative importance to attach to them in your own mind and in your selection process It's a good place to start because there's limited information, you won't get information overload until you've grasped some basics and can cope with it. (You'll probably be losing money during this period, so bet small !) Pretty soon you'll realise that you haven't got enough information and you'll start asking questions like - what if the race that horse A finished 5th in was a much, much better race than the one horse B won ? Is it enough to know that a horse won last time out and another finished 5th, or do i really need to know what races those were, how good were they ? Why is horse A carrying 9 stone 10 when it hasn't won for 7 races and another horse is carrying 8 stone 4 and it's won it's last 3 races ? Why is the horse trained by Sir M Stoute favourite when it's never run and the one of Mrs R Carr 20/1 when it finished 2nd last time ? ..........and one question will lead to another............ At that point you've got to graduate to proper racing form, which these days means The Racing Post All the information you need is there - you've got to decide what questions you're asking about the race and go look for the answers. You might start off by thinking that 'class of race' is something you really need to know - what class have todays runners been running in before and are they now in an easier race or a harder one ? You might go a few days just looking at this. Then another thing might come up like - is there any clues in the horses previous runs that they'll be suited by todays 7 furlong race on soft going.........and you spend a few days focussing on that aspect. But you've still got 'race class' in mind as well.......... Then you move on to another factor........and so on .......differences between tracks and similarities of some tracks to other tracks and if these suit particular horses, is the trainer 'in form' ?.........collateral form, speed figures, form ratings, breeding, ..........there's a myriad of variables you can consider or can look at and decide not to bother with. Gradually you build up your own pattern of what to look for in a horse's race history which might lead to it having a good chance of winning todays race. This is probably something we all develop individually over time.........you find a 'form study method' that you're comfortable with........ In short - give it time and work at it..............

  7. Re: Lay Of The Day Selections ~ July 5th Bath 3.30 - Shiela's Bond - lay Yard in is good form amd her mark looks OK, but I'm not sure her stamina will hold out over this long uphill finish She's done all her running on flat poly tracks and appears to stay 10/12 furlongs. But all her races have been slow run affairs Not sure she'll stay if they run a bit quicker on this firm ground with the uphill finish Also a doubt as to wether she'll handle firm ground as she's never run on it before.

  8. Re: BBOTD - 5th of July 6.50 Ripon - Minortransgression - win at 6/4 BOG with Stan James Drops into selling company and is rated around 20 lbs better than the rest of them on both OR and RPR. Hannigan takes the ride and you've gotta assume he had a choice of a few of these as his stable has no runner His form in all weather maidens over the winter was quite useful but his only run on turf was disappointing, well beaten Presumably that's why he's odds against - he's had a couple of months of since that run and changed stables, so deserves a chance to show that wasn't his true form.

  9. Re: BBOTD 4th July 4.30 Brighton - Patavium prince - win at 9/2 BOG with victor chandler Usually goes well here and finished second on seasonal reappearance a couple of weeks ago Was beaten 6 lengths so it wasn't a great run, but did have Ocean Countess behind and should beat that one again as she was race fit that day. If he comes on a bit for the run he should have a chance today, handicap mark is fine, course and trip and going are no problem

  10. Re: Chantilly - Sunday 4th July

Well done Jimmy What happened to Lope De Vega, been mightily impressed form last 2 runnings but was out of it in play on betfair for a long time?
I was checking on the French sites earlier and he'd drifted quite a bit in the betting.........can be a bit difficult to follow the betting on there, but he seemed to 'odds on' overnight yet was about 2/1 when i looked earlier........ I take it you haven't seen the race ? He loped along in 2nd behind his pacemaker, took it up about 2 out, then found zilch when the challengers came up to him. Dick turpin went past him like he was wearing concrete boots.............
  11. Re: LOTD Sunday 4th July Brighton 5.00 - Caribbean coral - lay The 'Post' have put this one as their tip for the race, but I can't see him winning Former classy sprinter who won handicaps off as high as 96 and is now running off 55..........but he's 11 years old and hasn't won outside of selling/claiming company for over 3 years. Don't think he can win over 5 furlongs these days........his last 3 wins have been at 6F and in his last couple of runs over 5F he's been outpaced then started running on too late

  12. Re: Chantilly - Sunday 4th July It's a Mile race, bowles.........and the going is good to soft ! How can it be good to soft.........there's been a heatwave for weeks !. This French going is a real puzzler, they always manage to get 'soft' in their going descriptions. I'm going for Lope de Vega........he's won 2 Classics and looks a tremendous horse. He might well be better at 10 furlongs, but most of these except Dick have that look about them of being 10 furlong horses. I think Dick might set it up for a finisher........expect Lopey to be flying at the finish !

  13. Re: LOTD - Sat 3rd July Sandown 3.10 - Zacinto - lay The racing post is suggesting that this one will be 'well suited' by the step up to 10 furlongs, but I can't see it myself. I reckon he should go back to sprints or 7 furlongs. His mile wins have come on easy tracks like Goodwood and on stiffer tracks he tends to get outstayed over a mile. Last time at Royal Ascot he lost 3rd place by fading at the finish With a couple of 12 furlong horses in todays small field, I reckon they'll crack on and i can't see this being a crawl and sprint, which might have given him a chance.

  14. Re: LOTD - Sat 3rd July

2.50 Sandown Barshiba - 1 pt lay - won race last season but behind Les Fazzini, Rosika and Polly's Mark in a recent run over course and distance and dont think she will reverse the form here as many not get it run to suit.
Don't think Fin is around, so on his behalf, just point out that this should be the 2.50 at Haydock !
  15. Re: BBOTD - Sat 3rd July Sandown 2.00 - Triple Aspect - win at 5/2 BOG with Stan James Goes well here, is the only CD winner in the field and was narrowly pipped in this race last year. There's a couple of speedy types in the field who might just set it up for a late runner. The selection, apart from winning over this CD, gets 6F fair enough, so should be running on at the finish Has the rail draw so might have to come round the field...........I can see this being a bunch finish as i also quite fancy Reignier at big odds to be pouncing from the rear Could be a nail biter............:loon

  16. Re: Sandown (Eclipse) 3rd July

Have fun Spooner This is an awful Elipse though. I'm looking forward to the race but it's hard to get excited
I think it's just 'too many similar races' On Sunday we've got the Group One 'prix jean prat' for 3YO over a Mile in France and Xtension is running there.........I'd have thought he'd have been a perfect 'Eclipse' horse after finishing placed, running on at the finish, in a couple of Guineas..........
