  1. Re: BBOTD Monday 8th Aug Ling 2.30 - With Hindsight - win at 5/1 BOG bet365 Lightly raced 3yo from a stable running into good form with 3 winners from last 6 runs He ran quite a nice race last time when stepped up in trip to 8.5 furlongs at Epsom. After being bumped at the start he settled in the rear and travelled nicely, never put in the race but ran on promisingly in the final furlong. That was his first run back after a break and he might come on a bit The extra half furlong here should help, he drops in class from class 4 to class 5 and is down a couple of pounds in the weights. quick thumbnails on the others........ Green wadi - doesn't find much in the finish Negotiation - runs ok but infrequent winner Fluvial - well beaten in handicaps Clarion call - my 'next best' but probably wants further Highlife Dancer - all best runs in class 6, goes well here

  2. Re: BBOTD Sunday!

Curr 2.35 - Banimpire - win at 10/11 BOG Boyles Tough and consistant filly having her 9th run of the season. Has already won 3 times at group 3 level, the group 2 Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot and finished a short head 2nd in the Irish oaks. Appears to act on any going so the forecast rain wouldn't bother her, in fact it might suit as she's dropping back in trip. I guess horses can't keep running well every 2 or 3 weeks all season at the top level, but worth following until she shows signs of having had enough
Well...........she won, but I thought she was showing signs of needing a break now, scrubbed along, first one to be driven, hung a bit when pushed to the front............her toughness got her home, but don't think I'll back her next time unless she has a decent break !

  4. Re: Saturday ~ BBOTD Redcar 3.30 - The Osteopath - win at 7/1 bog Laddies Taking a bit of a chance with this one as he hasn't won for 2 years and his losing run now stands at 14 races As a result he's dropped down the ratings and gets to run off 78 having won on marks as high as 89 in the past and gets to run in a class 4 handicap for the first time for 3 years All his runs this season have been in claimers and claimer form is often overlooked when assessing handicaps. He's been running pretty well, over tracks/trips that i don't think play to his strengths. His record over this CD is 1-2 from 2 runs My view is that this represents a drop in class from the claimers he's been running in, down in the weights, back on a CD he goes well at..........must have a decent chance of getting back in the winners enclosure !

  5. Re: Shergar Cup Thread Good points It's just something a bit different and gets some media interest that a regular card wouldn't. It's just a bit of fun, let it slide by It'll all be forgotten by Monday and us racing nuts who want to have a bet have several other cards to look at - we can just give it a miss and let the Beeb try to whip up a bit of 'Ryder Cup' and X-Factor stylee back-story human interest guff for the tabloid fodder couch potatoes. Bit like the Grand National really...............it's one of racing's 'days for the non racing fans'. Nothing to get worked up about, concentrate on Haydock for proper racing.

  6. Re: Shergar Cup Thread I thought there were 12 in every race ..........I've only just noticed that the bottom 2 are reserves by looking at the Life cards The RP doesn't state that they are reserves.........just doesn't have jockeys names ! I've picked horses in 6 of the races for my Cup entry tomorrow without realising that there are reserves..........:loon

  8. Re: Delays with Race Meetings Sometimes if there's a big race on elsewhere a track might delay the 'off time' because all it's patrons are watching the big race on telly in the bars or on a big screen............and they'd grumble if the local race went off whilst the big race was still going

  9. Re: 2012 fixtures are capped

At last they have seen sense to cap the number of meetings to 1400 for the 2012 season as its been finally recognized by the "G &"T mob there is far too much racing with small fields and uncompetive racing,
It's all well and good saying there's too much small field and uncompetitive racing, but that's the group, listed and conditions events in classes 1 to 3 that they have no intention of getting rid of What they always want to get rid of is the big field, competitve class 5 and 6 handicaps on the all weather and round the gaffs on turf which are often divided because 30 odd runners are declared.
  10. Re: BBOTD - Fri 5 Aug Newm 8.00 - Al Kazeem - win at 7/4 bog bet365 This is a conditions race featuring some horses who are on the way up through handicaps and some who have faltered at Group/Listed level and are dropping back in class. Al Kazeem looks he's on his way to group races (he's entered in the Great Voltigeur) and he boasts just about the best handicap form on offer this season by a 3 year old. Last time out he won a Class 2 handicap at Newbury (quickened clear, readily). The horses behind him, Labarinto, Fulgur, Dominant, Norse Blues have all come out and won class 2 handicaps in turn and a couple of others have won at lower grades I guess the main danger is that he's been off since May and might be having a prep run for York and might not be fully wound up. But the yard is in form with 5 winners from the last 7 runners so I'll take a chance on his readiness

  11. Re: BBOTD AUG 4TH Yarm 4.50 - Midnight Rider - win at 7/2 bog PP Only 5 runners for this sprint handicap Midnight Rider is a lightly raced 3 year old having his second run in handicaps. Finished third last time out at warwick, making good late headway. That was his first run for 4 months and hopefully he'll come on a bit Prior to that he'd gone off as an odds on favourite in 2 maidens but hadn't won one So, he's still a maiden This isn't really my normal kind of selection as I'm obviously going on 'promise' rather than 'acheivement' But i've got my doubts about the other 4 runners - Equuluis Pictor probably needs a deluge as he's best on soft ground. The forecast for tomorrow is a bit iffy so he might get it, but that's the risk in posting up the night before..............:loon Whisky Junction is better over 6f now and usually struggles in handicaps Star twilight has been running in worse races than this recently and not winning them Miss Polly Plum has shot up the weights after a good early season. She might go well back at 5 furlongs as a front runner, but I'm hoping Star twilight might bustle her up for a few furlongs.

  12. Re: Shergar Cup Thread Hunt is the best commentator by miles............I love listening to his radio commentaries but like cricket and football it's impossible nowadays to have the picture on with the sound off and listen to radio commentary, because of the huge delay on digital tv pictures. oh well, i suppose it's progress................

  13. Re: Shergar Cup Thread

I feel sorry for John Hunt who has to put up with that Lysaght bloke no wonder why Lee Mckenzie walked out
Lysaght knows his stuff.........he's the specialist 'racing correspondant' Trouble is that when he's involved in any of the general sports programmes he has to dumb down and spell things out in words of one syllable because the other R5 people on the show have no understanding of racing........... So poor old Corny always comes across as though he's talking to mentally disadvantaged children No doubt he'll be on R5 on saturday following the 'Ryder Cup' theme as laid down by the Producer and failing to explain to them that it's not really like the Ryder Cup at all................
  14. Re: Shergar Cup Thread Not something I've ever taken much interest in but then i don't rate 'jockey' as one of the main factors when I'm making a selection My view is that there are dozens of competant jockeys out there - if they're on the right horse they'll win. I just don't think there's enough difference between the top few dozen jockeys (basically the ones who ride every day) to make it worthwhile spending time on. And whatever differences there are can't be quantified in advance of the race. Good jockeys do bad rides and bad jockeys do good rides. You don't know in advance which it's going to be so it's just part of the randomness. On the other hand once I've made a selection then a good jockey on my horse is a bonus but the horse has to be selected on it's own record So for the Shergar Cup my opinion would be that if Hayley wins the first race, any of the other 11 jockeys would have won if they'd been on that horse. Nothing against the event itself..............it quite often gets a mention on the sports news and on radio 5. Of course they mis-represent it as some kind of Ryder Cup, but then most people at radio 5 don't understand horse reading, they're reading a script
