Bookies are going very short on caltonian here ...7/4....and I get it ...could be better than he looks so worthy fav ....with Galileo glass no pushover either at 4/1......but computer has flagged....Graceland girl ....as a dark horse selection  and I'm going to play this one at 14/1..Ew ....ran a pretty good race when last seen on aw and has been tried on turf since without showing much ....returns to aw off much reduced Mark as a result so if he has any talent then conditions are perfect now ....hence. ..dark horse 🙂...speculative but very good value
    5pts Ew Graceland girl 14/1

My general rule is back Ew if 1/5 th odds 11/2 or win below ....that way you make a profit overall even if the horse only place ....at 5/1 you break even so that's not a bad bet .....below 5/1 you start losing money overall if the horse places so I'd rather invest in the win but sometimes the safety factor is nice ...it's personal choice

It's a constant conundrum. Some time ago I asked myself a similar question.
My thoughts were that If betting WIN ONLY - you may require a 50pt betting bank, but if you were betting EACH WAY, you would get a return more often so maybe a 25pt bank would work.
Now, the maths ... a £1,000  bank divided by 50pts for WIN ONLY would be £20 WIN x 50. - BUT if betting EACH WAY and only having a 25pt bank, you would be staking £40 per bet (£20 EW) .. meaning that you are still betting £20 WIN but also with a £20 place saver.
    -------------------------------
Of course, there is also  an alternative £40 bet .. that which involves 2 x £20 WIN bets in the same race giving you 2 chances and again, more regular returns as with 2 running for you, you should find a few more winners. It's an interesting debate for sure.

    Nothing like a good purge!
You don't need to justify yourself. Cheap shots are easy, e.g.
"Still harping on about number of winners but running scared of accounting for profit or loss"
"Posting so close to the off (with multiple edits) so as to be of no use to the vast majority of people"
"Pointlessly listing runners that finished second"
I'm not saying those are fair criticisms though they all have some basis in fact. But they're no less valid than a snide observation about system selections being put up early constituting a "wish list".

Please note what I have written are my own thoughts and opinions, this has no bearing on how PL community place their bets.   I have been betting horses since early 1970s and my intentions when putting any single bets on was for my horse to win as I would be disappointed like any other punter if it loses or placed.   Over the years I know notice that a number of pundits are advising on placing an each way single on a horse trading between 5/1 -11/2 (sometimes shorter), if the 5/1 shot is placed then odds become a lot shorter as we know and you now have 11/10  - ¼ odds say (excuse my sums). Now do we double our stakes? Or do we half our stake? In my opinion my returns would be very short and that's were I would be placing a single bet and hope for a winner.   Our resident tipster "The Brigadier" suggests in some races, each way single bets at 5/1 - 11/2 - now is that aimed at "big hitters" or punters like myself - "Fivers and  Tenners"? The ITV racing team such like, Matt Chapman and Adele Mulrennan put up 5/1 - 11/2 shots each way - now is this to help their tipping record for over the season? I would ask The Brigadier the same question?   My bets mostly on a Saturday or televised races midweek such as Royal Ascot , Cheltenham festival etc, are all single bets and I will choose two double figure odds for each way double and probably put a Lucky 15 on.   I have never been involved in any type of forum before but I would be grateful for all your thoughts   and if  you think I am still in the "dark ages" then please give me your insight as what works for you?

Something that I have been doing with some success,
4.45 Here - Ocean Reach - 7/2 - 2pts - My only concern is that it is ridden by a 7lb claimer which I try to avoid. There is also Minniemum in the race which is on my tracker and has been backed into 5/2 - 1pt saver.
    5.10 Leic - Hodler - 4/1 - 2pts - becoming better handicapped. Also - Able Kane 8/1 for a 1pt saver.

Heavy going at Chepstow has caused a few non-runners, and rendered my initial calculations useless (Original top rated now NR's). I'm betting in 3 races.
2.30 Chep - French Paradoxe (11/4) - 2pts - This French bred is 3/7 over fences, and 3 miles on testing ground 'shouldn't' e a problem having run over further. Emir Sacre (11/2) - 1pt as a saver. Another French bred, trained by N.Henderson, he won't mind the going and has won at the course before.
3.40 Chep - Datsalrightgino (9/4) - 2pts -Trainer Jamie Snowden in good form (2 wins from last 8 runners), may not want it too testing but ratings look good. Al Dancer (11/2) - 1pt as a saver. Trainer Sam Thomas has just had the 1 runner recently (Won), Al Dancer has a good record fresh and won't mind the going.
4.50 Chep - Jilaijone (7/2) - 2pts -Trainer David Pipe is 4 wins from 16 recently. Jilaijone finished 2nd LO over 2 furlongs further on very soft going so should be there at the finish. Zestful (3/1) - 1pt as a saver. Hard to knock this runner, and with trainer doing ok and Sean Bowen booked, again should go close.

If you are not in it to win, what are you in it for ? I can only assume that you are aiming to get to the poor house.
No doubting your enthusiasm, and it is impossible to pick winners all the time, but I would suggest - Keep a detailed log of your bets and why you placed them ( system, jockey, trainer, market move, or any other thing you look for), you will then be able to see more clearly where you do well, and more importantly, where you can eliminate the bad/poor bets. Try to be a little more selective. The shotgun approach will always hit some winners, but you will be able to increase stakes ( and win more) if you adopt the sniper approach and focus in on your target.

Then on the TRACK drop down menu, choose the track you want. It shows you the stats for all trainers at that track, including Strike rate %.
