Obviously CSKA are the big favourites for this match, but for several reasons the odds on a home win don't appeal to me - it's the first league game for nearly two months so both teams could be a bit rusty (just like my picks), the CSKA players who were involved in the WC have only just returned to training with their team mates (couldn't find out unfortunately if they're actually going to be playing, on the bench, or completely rested) and the stats seem to suggest that Saturn aren't that bad defensively (11 goals conceded in 11 games). Maybe someone with a more rounded knowledge of Russian football can fill us in with exact team news and their thoughts on the match. So for those reasons I'm going with small stakes Under 2.5 at 2.12

Spartak didn't play that well in the cup earlier in the week. But Rubin Kazan not only didn't play well, they lost the game to a second division opponent. Spartak have a price nice home field advantage. So far this year this is the #1 most attending team by a decently wide margin. They've only given up 3 goals at home in 6 games. The 2 games they actually lost at home, were the first 2 of the season, and they haven't lost since.Rubin has struggled scoring on the road just scoring 5, compared to teams like Zenit and CSKA who have scored 11 each on the road. Head 2 Head these guys are pretty evenly matched since the Premier League started. Should be an interesting-evenly matched game. I honestly expect a draw but going the safe way on this one.

Two league defeats in a row and an unconvincing midweek cup victory have put a bit of pressure on Karpin, and if my google translation can be trusted he's missing his top scorer Welliton (7 goals in 11 games) who was injured in the cup game. I can see them having problems breaking down Rubin's stingy defence (1 goal conceded in their 5 away games). I believe also that the allegedly 25 year old Obafemi Martins has signed for Rubin, but can't play till after 1st August. Anyway backing Rubin 0AH at 2.03 with Betfair

Its tough though. I'll go with the fact that Saturn hasn't won a game at home, in 5 straight games. Saturn has failed to score in half of there games while Nilchik has scored in nearly all. Saturn is giving up 1 goal a game as well. Nilchik hasn't won 4 in a row on the road not including the cup, but 3 of the 4 teams they lost to are in top of the league. I think this presents some good value for them to bounce back.

Saturn 8 points So you can wonder why I chose this bet. Let’s enumerate reasons. 1) Saturn are playing every game better. I watched their previous game with CSKA Moscow and they have the same moments on goal as strong hosts. Actually Saturn by play is a mid-table team and I suppose they will survive by the tournament finish. 2) Nalchik is a good team with the average players but well-built play – it’s a merit of coach, Yuri Krasnozhan. The second year in a row the team starts very successfully. But the financial abilities, infrastructure of Nalchik are modest and club is not capable for instance to host CL games. The players understand that and accomplishing the goal already after the first half-season start to play more imposing. The previous year was so and this year I am also waiting for this. 3) Nalchik will miss their captain Miodrag Djudovic who was sent off in previous game. It shouldn’t to be a big blow in the start of season but now it is. Recently the second central midfielder Amisulashvili went to Turkish Kocaelispor. And now his place takes unexperienced Vasin (21 year-old), who played already the previous game. Summing up these facts, I bet on Saturn.
