Rio's Racing Diary

Re: Rio's Racing Diary A decent first day yesterday. If everything I backed ran as well as Verrazano in the first I would have no complaints, he tried his best but was beaten by a better horse in Toronado. However the 2nd place at the bonus of a 6/1 SP kept my hopes of a place double going. No real complaint about Cappella Sansevero either, he ran on well to snatch 2nd late & I suppose if I was picky I could say that he did come from a long way back & might have been ridden closer to the pace but I still think The Wow Signal won on merit. A return from the place part here. Sole Power was seriously impressive, just for a moment it looked like Richard Hughes might not get a gap but a switch to the right & whoosh he was away & even pulling up on the line. This is a top class sprinter when he has his conditions of fast ground & 5f's. Now comes the moan. If that was good ground out there I'm a Chinaman, at the end of play it was still officially Good, rubbish it's Good to firm at least, I see the Berk of the course is thinking he might change it when he's had a look this morning. In your own time old cock, don't you worry about landing in the 21st century any time soon :eyes Kingman also was top class & is unlucky not to be unbeaten with things not falling his way in the Guineas, that though is racing & they've been running up that layout on Newmarket heath for many a long year & they ain't changing it any time soon. The clash with the older generation in the Sussex & QEII stakes is eagerly awaited. The slight disappointment on the day was Midterm Break who never really got in the race & was well beaten. I have to say well done to Wesley Ward, the Yanks like to crow about how good their's are at times & they have the Breeder's Cup which they like to think of as the world championship's but rarely do they stray from home apart from Mr Ward who really seems to get into the spirit of it & needs congratulating for doing so :clap The 60pts on the singles returned 135pts from Sole Power & Cappella Sansevero's place. The each way doubles returned 28.12pts from 15pts staked. Singles etc W/R 17-76 Stakes 1231pts Returns 1277.77pts Profit/Loss +46.77pts Multiple bets Stakes 723.25pts Returns 491.56pts Profit/Loss -231.69pts Lays W/R 1-1 Profit/Loss +9.5pts Scoop 6 -£10 Expenses £935 Today is very low key. 2.30 It had always been my intention to back That is the Spirit in the Jersey & each way if the price allowed. That's the case & while all firms are going a quarter the odds Bet365 are the only one paying four places. He has a bit to find on the bare form but is still open to further progress, there doesn't seem to be a bias to either side but box 20 has him near the stands rail which is good enough. 3.05 Back to the fledgling speed numbers which have Tiggy Wiggy nicely top rated for the Queen Mary. She was most impressive in beating Cock of the North by three & three quarters of a length at Sandown & while he was only 11th in the Coventry yesterday he was only just over 4l's behind the Wow Signal there. The worry would be the fast ground, it was soft at Sandown & while it wasn't that fast at York she wasn't as good when beaten half a length by Patience Alexander there on good going. Patience Alexander goes for the Albany on Friday instead of this & the same owner has got Anthem Alexander in here so you'd think that they think a bit more of her. She scooted home on fast ground in a Tipperary maiden a couple of weeks ago leaving her debut run on pretty bad ground at the Curragh behind. She could be anything but needs a fair chuck of improvement to get to Tiggy Wiggy's level. The aforementioned Wesley Ward runs the one race one win Spanish Pipedream which like his yesterday is the only one I don't have a number for, she hosed up on the polytrack at Keeneland in April in fairly low grade. Is she owt or is she nowt? Tiggy is worth a small bet at a reasonable price. The Prince of Wales's is just a watch & I was thinking of taking on Sky Lantern on her return with a Group 1 pen in the 4.25 with either Integral or Esoterique who have nothing between them on the Dahlia form from LTO but I can't make my mind up. Esoterique had had the benefit of a couple of runs there while Intergral was making her seasonal return & should come on for that but I don't like going against Andre Farbe, he doesn't send them over for a day out & I think I'll just watch this too. Now I don't know if this source is any good but I was told at Nottingham on Monday that Burano is a plot horse for the Hunt Cup at 5.00. The two runs where he's found a bit of bother since returning from Meydan are supposed to have got him ready for a tilt at this but who knows, certainly not me. He has some decent form in some quite valuable races but a record of one win from 26 starts hardly reads well, however he was 33/1 & paying five places on the betfair sportsbook last evening & they do BOG on there as well so a small ew investment seemed in order. I'm still not sure about Ripon tonight, it's not the greatest fare but if Mowgli can slip out of work early then I may accompany him or I could watch Spain & Chile, COME ON CHILE! Bets. That is the Spirit 5pts ew @ 14/1 Bet365, 4 places BOG Tiggy Wiggy 10pts @ 6/1 Paddy Power BOG Burano 5pts ew @ 33/1 betfair sportsbook, 5 places BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Right the sun is out & Mowgli's bunking off work early so it's a run out to Ripon. The first race is an apprentice handicap for riders who have yet to ride a winner before June 14th. None of them have won since so somebody is going to have a big smile at about 6.55 this evening. It's actually quite a tidy handicap with at least three or four of them in form & much better than the race I got involved with here a year or two back which not only had jockeys looking to break their duck but was also a seller. This time I'm just going to watch & applaud the winner in. Some 2yo's at 7.20 where Stanghow sets the standard on a C&D 2nd two runs back & just tops my ratings, not far behind is Olivia Fallow who should come on for her debut 4th at Catterick. There are two that make their debuts & wouldn't have to be anything special to go close, one's from David O'Meara's & I'm hoping I can see someone to ask what they think. I'll probably play here but not till I've had a look. The 7.50 is a trappy looking affair where Dolphin Rock would seem to be nearing a win but I think the trip might just stretch him. Maybeme is C&D winner but needs a career best off this mark. Muffin McLeary is another who's a C&D winner & is on a fair mark but hasn't shown much in three runs this year. Ardmay's won here at a mile & is well handicapped but again is not in top form. Shouranour ran quite well on debut for David O'Meara but then not so much next time, sports first time paint rollers & might be worth a punt but again I'll see who's about first. The Hooded Claw beat Kickboxer at Chester & is actually a pound better off here because Kickboxer has won at Leicester & run two good races at York since icluding a screamer when 3rd in the big handicap on Saturday. I think Channon's going for this decent prize before the handicapper sticks him up some more & while he ought not to beat the Hooded Claw on the book that one seems better on soft/heavy. I backed Jaeger Train when he ran 3rd at Donny LTO & he's a pound higher although Joey Haynes takes off 5lb, I just think he might need a bit of cut too. The rest look like they need to bounce back. Missed the 9/4 earlier & here I go backing a skinny one again. 8.50 Dutch Breeze sets the standard but keeps finding one to beat him, there's a couple of newcomers & Eternitys Gate might be worth a look, again I'll have a view of them first. Northside Prince has come out of the last which is a shame because I thought he looked a jolly to take on under a 6lb pen having won a five runner Ladies race LTO albeit a better class than this. Pertuis has Course form & ran well in 2nd here LTO but is another that would need a career best & I'm not a fan of the trainer. Aryal could go well down in class but I'm having a go with Cloud Monkey who won on the aw at Dundalk & has dropped down the handicap to 70 from a high of 90 at one point. Ran his best race since arriving here from Ireland at Catterick LTO when 3rd on soft ground & ought to go on the ground, the stable is in form & does quite well on the flat from not many runners. Bets. Kickboxer 10pts @ 6/4 Hills Cloud Monkey 10pts @ 9/2 Totesport both BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary A reasonable day with an enjoyable evening under glorious blue sky & very warm. Ascot first. Sat watching C4 & they're interviewing the owner of That is the Spirit who informs us that he's not going to make the running here they're going to drop him in behind. I'm wondering what he's thinking as the stalls open & That is the Spirit is leading them up the near side at a decent lick? Two furlongs out & they swamp him but he boxes on quite well for a not disgraced 9th. I would think he might be hard to place now, he's off 106 which would make handicaps hard to win & a drop back Listed level would look the route if they can find one around 7f's or a mile & ideally with a bit of cut in the ground, maybe overseas? Once again Tiggy Wiggy runs a blinder & is only beaten a neck by Anthem Alexander who was well backed to have the Irish happy. Treve was disappointing in the Prince of Wales's & Frankie reported that he was never happy with her, I'd say she didn't like the fast ground & I do mean fast. I note that the going was good until after the first when it was changed to good to firm, good in places on the straight course, what is Stickel's playing at, can he not tell us what the proper going is before racing? All six races yesterday were run faster than the Racing post standard, indeed this race was 3.10 seconds faster than standard & it was a new record, it's like a bloody road out there, get your act together man!!!!! Intergral scooted away with the Duke of Cambridge & had clearly benefited from the seasonal debut in the Dahlia, I suspect we may be saying the same about Sky Lantern in a few weeks because she also looked like she needed the run & was only 5th. Having set off for Ripon I had to watch a recording of the Hunt Cup where Burano ran another race like the previous two in that he was held up, was ridden a furlong out & stayed on a bit without ever troubling the leaders. From now on I think I'll stick to picking my own losers. 30pts staked returns nowt. Ripon. Now this is what Summer should be like, blue skies, blazing sun & a pleasant evening on the racecourse, all I need now is a winner or two. Well I might need more than that if I'm going to eat on track again. Mowgli had a hot dog (not my thing) which had me thinking I need something, I decided on a turkey sandwich, two slices of turkey & a bit of stuffing with a splash of gravy in a non too large breadcake, £5.30 :eek Jesus H Christ they should be wearing a black mask & pointing a pistol at you, at least it was fresh & worth eating. The first race was won by Fathom Five & Georgia Cox on just her fifth ride & rather well they did it too, well done :clap No chance to ask anybody from O'Meara's about the debut making 2yo up next but then there was really no need to, I don't pretend to be a paddock expert but Jebediah Shine was clearly going to need her first run & duly came a well beaten last of the five having drifted before. The best looking pair were Karl Burke's Arthur Martinleake & Olivia Fallow, the fact that the latter had had a run swayed the pair of us her way. Round in the betting ring & they were vying for favouritism, I decided to take 7/4 & moved forward but two others beat me to it & the first had £200 on at the price, the other chap backed her as well & I'm thinking I'm not getting this but did to much less than the first bloke I might add. Mowgli backed her too & we moved to the stand to watch. She was cruising coming to a furlong out but needed a gap, one opened on the rail & Paul Mulrennan had her straight through & away for a cozy length win. That will do & called for a mint choc ice cream which at £2.50 makes me think I'll have two of those next time & forget the sarnie! We both talked ourselves into backing Shouranour in the first time cheekpieces in the next & he ran well enough from the front until it looked like Muffin McLeary had seen him off in the final furlong & then Maybeme arrived from what looked an impossible position to nut that one close home having hit 85.0 in running on betfair. Kickboxer up next but this time Mowgli was against me with No Leaf Clover who had been running at a much higher level & Makin the Rules, he backed them both, the latter at 12/1 & the bloke in front of him had stuck a ton on that one at the price. It might have been the same chap from earlier playing up his winnings but this time he wasn't collecting, they ran ok for 2nd & 3rd but Kickboxer could be called the winner from a long way out & sauntered home to have me kicking myself for not taking the early 9/4 & even more so because I got rule 4'd for Jaeger Train defecting as well. I decided not to go against the well backed Dutch Breeze in the 3yo maiden & sat this one out. Mowgli had a bit on It's a Yes From Me which looked another to these eyes that would need the run. The jolly dotted up while It's Yes From Me would have struggled to beat a toddler on a trike & never went a yard. We stayed for the lucky last where Good Speech went out early, the 1m 4f start is on the bend just past the winning post but Good Speech ran away with the jockey & he didn't pull up until the end of the back straight, somehow this one managed to be the 3/1jtf & the inevitable withdrawal meant a 25p rule 4 was coming. Mowgli went for Bright Applause & Barry McUseless who managed to get him trapped against the rail at the wrong time, he got out & was flying at the death along with mine Cloud Monkey who had taken an age to get into top gear having been in the right position but the pair of them couldn't get to Pertius who held on by a half. She won her first two, an aw maiden at Chantilly & then a Longchamp Group 3 on very soft in late April. The pick of her form though is the 2nd back there LTO in a Group 1 where only the very smart We Are was too good for her & she had the rest well beaten. That was 10f's on soft & she ought to like the extra 2f's here, she's not seen ground this quick but is by Sea the Stars so there shouldn't be a problem in fact she ought to be better for it. Inchila ran 4th in the Oaks but may be a bit flattered by that, she landed a nothing maiden at Newbury but then looked a bit one paced back there in a Listed race before the Epsom run. Bright Approach has a similar profile having also won a Newbury maiden & then was a never dangerous 3rd in the Cheshire Oaks. Bracelet needs to bounce back from a poor run in the 1000 Guineas & up in trip & a drop in class should help but her two poor runs have both come on fast ground. I toyed with going but decided not to, I was thinking about going to Ripon again but that holds no appeal either. Looking at it he's managed to find a warm race of it's kind for the track, Grosmont, Denton Dawn, Make on Madam & Spindle have all run fairly well so far & he'd need to be quite useful & ready to go & the yard is not noted for first time 2yo's if he's beating this lot on his first run. I'm expecting him to get a steady introduction here with a view to the future & that's what they seem to be saying on the website, just a watch then. Balducci was in at Leicester today & Redcar tomorrow but he is waiting for next week & a go at the Carlisle Bell, I'll have a run out if he goes there I think. Re: Rio's Racing Diary Not especially impressed by the ride given to Variza by Soumillon yesterday, he gave her a hell of a lot to do from that far back & she needed to pick up straight away when asked up the short straight & didn't & while she was closing she was never getting there. She probably wasn't good enough anyway & listening to the trainer before they had a doubt that she might not get the trip so I can understand why the hold up tactics were used but there's holding up & over doing it & I rather think that Hughes over did it on Lustrous as well as Soumillon & both are cut from the same cloth. The racing club 2yo was 5th of the six beaten 13l's yesterday, no report yet as to what they thought but the form line doesn't read well...

Dwelt and soon ridden along, outpaced and wide straight, never dangerous
He's a Royal Appause who did all bar one of his winning on good ground or faster & I suppose the main hope would be that he didn't handle the Southwell surface, he'd probably have needed it too, most of the O'Meara 2yo's need a run. Singles etc W/R 18-82 Stakes 1306pts Returns 1301.27pts Profit/Loss -4.73pts Multiple bets Stakes 723.25pts Returns 491.56pts Profit/Loss -231.69pts Lays W/R 1-1 Profit/Loss +9.5pts Scoop 6 -£10 Expenses £950 Ascot 2.30 Patience Alexander ought to be thereabouts with Tiggy Wiggy franking the form of her York win by scoring at Sandown & then running a screamer in the Queen Mary. I have her second rated on my numbers behind Effusive who posted a good number when landing a Carlisle maiden on her debut despite running green. She will know more this time & the extra furlong shouldn't be a problem, she's worth an ew bet. I'd backed Western Hymn in the 3.45 but I see that he has come out & I'll just be watching now. No Guineas winner for a change in the Coronation but the English & Irish 1000 runner up Lightning Thunder sets the standard on this years form & Olivier Peslier takes over from the discarded Harry Bentley which is a bit unfair because she wouldn't have liked the softer ground in Ireland & should go well on today's surface. The other main contenders seem to be trying to recapture their 2yo form or are making a belated seasonal return. My Titania returns here having had to miss both Guineas due to small setbacks, the form of her Group 3 win at the Curragh when last seen in September reads well with the Oaks runner up Tarfasha back in 3rd but she still needs to improve a fair chunk to get to the level of some of these & this will be the fastest ground she's seen, I can see things happening just a bit too quick for her today. Rizeena & Lucky Kristale both need to bounce back from the English 1000 runs but were a pair of smart 2yo's. I'm thinking a mile just stretches Rizeena & even more so with Lucky Kristale with all her runs before the classic at 6f's. Another on on the comeback trail is Tapesty who was just about pulled up at Newmarket & Aidan O'Brien blamed himself afterwards saying that he shouldn't have run her because she'd lost a bit of condition & looked quite light. One would think she wouldn't be asked to run here if she wasn't right & I'm thinking she could bounce back like Bracelet did yesterday & she's worth an each way too. Bets. Re: Rio's Racing Diary Nothing from yesterday, Effusive ran a reasonable race to finish midfield while Tapestry was quite disappointing in 6th finding not much from a fairly promising position up the straight. There are a couple of decent handicaps among some right rubbish & David O'Meara's Out Do can win the 3.15 if he stays the 7f's but again I'm not playing at 7/4 to find out. The alternative venue is Haydock for the evening meeting but that doesn't set the pulse racing either, I note that Mariners Moon runs in the 8.20 & is back on proper fast ground, well that's assuming that Kirkland Talksb%&$&£k's hasn't let his hand slip while he's had the taps on but he's 10lbs higher than when he dotted up at Beverley & while he got stuck in the mud at Donny after I think the mile found him out at Carlisle LTO & he might be a 7f horse. A stay at home & watch Ascot & the Footie with a multiple & an each way the order of the day. 2.30 There's a few in here on their debuts including one from a pair of Wesley Ward's but the two on form look to be Dick Whittington & Toscanni. Dick Whittington had Toscanni a length & three parts behind when they were 2nd & 3rd on their debuts to the Coventry runner up Capella Sansevero on softish ground at Naas. Both have improved from that with Dick W running a good race on heavy in 2nd again & then landing what looked a penalty kick on fast ground at Navan last week. Toscanni was just held by a head by Kool Kompany in a Naas Listed race at 6f's with War Envoy in 3rd & that pair were not disgraced in the Coventry even if they were unplaced. My numbers have Toscanni top rated on the Naas run & quite a few of O'Brien's have run below form this week & I'll go with Toscanni. 3.45 Stoutey seems to hold the good cards here with Telescope & Hillstar. I'm not sure about Telescope, he looks like one of those "Am I in the mood today types" Having not reappeared until mid July in a nothing race at Leicester he then rather flopped when only 2nd at Haydock at 4/9. He then bounced back to land the Great Voltigeur at York & that was it for last season. He was a long way behind Noble Mission at Sandown on his return but got closer to that one at Chester LTO, both those races were on soft ground & he's better on faster going but really the only stand out bit of form is from York & he hardly looks bomb proof. Hillstar is another that seems to prefer it fast. He won the King Edward VII here last year on fast & then ran a good 3rd in the King George also on quick ground. Not so good in the International at York but then he wouldn't be the first to run below par in that & then it was soft ground back at Ascot in October where he wasn't disgraced in the Champion stakes. A no show in the Dubai World Cup at Meydan is easily forgiven & the run on soft when 2nd to Brown Panther at Chester is ok. He's got his ground & trip, likes the track & Frankie on top is a plus for me. I have to say the Diamond Jubilee looks to lack a bit of class this time, Slade Power is probably the pick of the older horses but all his best form is with juice in the ground. Aljamaaheer is interesting, ran a close 3rd in the Abernant on his return & dropped back to this trip but on this ground he might find it all happening too quick for him. The two 3yo's should go well, Astaire won the Gimcrack & the Middle Park at 2yo's & clearly didn't stay behind Kingman in the Greenham, the Duke of York 2nd was no disgrace & he should go well although ideally he might like a bit of cut. Due Diligence is whacked up in class but is unbeaten at the trip & could be anything, he's another that might like some juice though & with the in & out form of the yard I'll go with Astaire & Coral's are going a quarter for four places. 5.35 Tiger Cliff let me down a little bit at Sandown bit even that was a better piece of form than this lot can boast, the Yorkshire Cup run before that was smart too. He's down in class up in trip & he was a fine staying on 2nd in the Ascot Stakes over 2f's less last year. He gets another chance here. I had included Jaeger Train in the last at Ayr but I see he has come out with the excuse that he's running in his 2nd preference race which is the last at Ponty tomorrow. Bets. Re: Rio's Racing Diary Nothing again from the last day at Ascot apart from a point back from the non runner . Toscanini ran a fine race for 2nd in the opener but appears to have run into one in the shape of Richard Pankhurst & he could be more than useful. Hillstar was 2nd also but a long way behind Telescope & it will be interesting to see if he can hold his form this season. Astaire was in front for a long way & then dropped back out of the placings, Edward Lyham had a week to remember & I still think Slade power is better on easy ground so that was a good performance. Tiger Cliff was the only real let down going from looking to be cruising to plodding in two strides & I won't back him again. To say I only had the one winning day it wasn't a disaster with a small debit on the week. Correggio likes it here & scored FTO this season before getting stuck in the mud next time, back to better form when not beaten far at York LTO & the ground today will suit but this is a better class race than he's been running in. I like the bottom one here Comedy King, decent pedigree & off the mark in fair style at Newcastle a month ago at the trip, the WFA means he gets bottom weight & the stable is in form & has a good strike rate at this track. 3.40 A good Listed contest which would seem to concern Harris Tweed who hasn't shown much in two starts this season & usually needs easy ground. Rawaki who's been running well & was a good 2nd at Hamilton two starts back & then a fair 4th at Listed level at York. Waila looked progressive last season until her last start at Ascot where she beat one home but that was a Group 1 & on soft ground, went off favourite in a Goodwood Listed event on her return & was a bit disappointing in 4th, juice in the ground that day too & likely to come on for the run. Two & a half lengths in front of her on the same terms at Goodwood was Freedom's Light who then ran a blinder in a Group 3 at Haydock when just getting done in a head bobber. That sways me to her with the one doubt being the faster ground although she has run well on the aw at Lingfield & Kempton. 4.10 Herostatus won this off 3lb less last year & could go well with Fallon on top. Rosairlie has been running well & won at Ripon two starts back but needs a career best to defy top weight & may find the ground too lively. All Sir Frank Morgan's wins have been on the aw but he has fast ground form, another though that needs to find more having gone up 32lbs since his first win. Embsay Crag should go well back up in trip having run a good 3rd at 1m 4f's LTO, this race a bit better than he usually wins though. New Youmzain won here at half a mile futher FTO this season but then probably got stuck in the mud the last twice & the fast ground today will be more to his liking, he's only a 5yo so could be more to come from him at these long distances, he's the ew pick. 4.40 This looks a trappy little affair. Thurayaat has won three of her last four & is up another 6lb for a neck win at Nootingham on fast ground at the trip LTO, battled back well there but the handicapper might have hold of her now. By Jupiter is well bred & goes handicapping here having shown not a lot in three maiden runs although the last one at Newbury was a bit better. Likelihood looked progressive at 2yo's but didn't appear to be going on after two runs this season, however the 3rd at Salisbury LTO on fast ground at this trip was ok in a slightly better race & I'll go with her here. 5.10 Not sure if we're staying for the last but I had two running for me in here one of which was Jaeger Train but yet again he has come out, this time it's the fast ground & I have to say it's not a surprise. The other one is Makin the Rules who ran well at Ripon in midweek & rather ran into a big improver in the shape of Kickboxer, he looks like the faster the ground the better & this looks a good chance now to get on the scoresheet. Hoep you don't take this the wrong way but judging from your post I'm guessing you missed the sad news of Tiger Cliff's fatal heart attack.
I had no idea until Mowgli told me at Pontefract yesterday. My involvement with the racing clubs mean that I'm quite close to these animals even if it is in small way, having lost two club horses to injuries on the gallops I have some idea how the connections of Tiger Cliff are feeling & they have my sympathies at their loss. I believe I have stated on many occasions that injuries & fatalities are connections worse nightmare. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Warm day & a big crowd as usual for a Sunday at Ponty. After a look at them before the first I decided that the unraced Caius College Girl looked quite nice & had a small win & place on the Tote. She ran well enough but was one place short of a return although she was some way adrift of the 3rd which was the shade of odds on Lacing who was a little disappointing having received the curse of the best turned out. Also landing the BTO was the long odds on Smiling Stranger, it saw him off too because he could only manage 2nd. Mowgli backed Strawberry Martini before looking at them & decided to back Westerly each way after a look. Me being a complete pillock these days decided to have a bit on the exacta & took the jolly to beat Westerly & didn't reverse it, of course Westerly wins from Smiling Stranger & the exacta pays £22. I get worse, I really do. That was the last of the cash bets. Comedy King was well backed but drifted slightly before the off, Mowgli invested some of his Westerly returns & neither of us thought it very funny when Comedy King could be called a loser before the turn in & beat one home. The stewards were not amused either....

The representative of Luca Cumani, the trainer of COMEDY KING (IRE), unplaced, reported that the colt was unsuited by the good, good to firm in places going.
Hit the Jackpot ran well to be a close 4th under his welter burden. Mowgli decided that Waila could reverse the form with Freedom's Light & backed her but for a change it went my way when Freedom's Light prevailed by half a length in a fast time. A winner at last but the gloss slightly tarnished by a rule 4 for the defection of Rawaki. Another winner would see a profit & New Youmzain managed to pass the winning post in front in the next. Unfortunately this was the first time past the lollipop in the 2m 2f handicap & as they went past he was pulling Andrew Mullen's arms off. Down the hill & out of sight & when they reappear down by the 10f start he's got to be at least 10l's clear. "He'll finish last" I predict. He doesn't but tries his best to, beating just two home that have tailed off one of which is the second favourite Sir Frank Morgan & to me the stewards should have been having a word about that one but didn't. Likelihood is well backed into 2/1f & well stuffed in the race trailing home last of the six. It would seem the stewards don't think that's worth asking about either :eyes I could do with Makin the Rules winning but he can only run a distant 2nd to Foxy Clarets who Mowgli has suddenly decided is the days good thing & lumped on at 3/1. Re: Rio's Racing Diary Not a lot of time because I'm going to Carlisle & need to get away. Balducci runs in the Carlisle Bell with top weight including a 6lb penalty. He went up 11lb for the Nottingham win which I think is a bit harsh despite the 3rd Circumvent winning since & he is 5lb well in here. We seem to be confident of a big run with the one niggle being the draw, 13 is a bit wide here but you can't have everything. It is a better race than the one he won last week but he should go well, at the moment I have put an order in for 2.52 on the place market & backed him in a trixie plus double stake singles with two others. Providing he's still around the 11/2 mark & there are still 16 running I'll have a bit on ew at the track. The other two are Bondi Beach Boy in the 3.00 who seems to be returning to form & is just a pound higher than his last winning mark. Ventura Quest is only a 3yo & open to further progress, the likely strong pace should suit & he can go close in the 3.35. Bets Balducci 10pts to place @ 2.52 betfair, umatched as I write. Bondi Beach Boy 7/2 Ventura Quest 15/2 Balducci 11/2 1pt trixie + 3 x 2pt singles = 10pts staked Paddy power BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Part of the attraction for going racing with the owners head on is that you are privy to things that go on that that you wouldn't normally get & in the case of yesterday this happened not once but in six of the seven races. There are a couple of members in my racing club that were in the other one with me & are also involved in two other racing clubs & between us we had five runners at Carlisle yesterday in the last five races. Add to this a bit of info for the second race & it was a real eye opener of a day. Having met up with Graham & Frank in the owners & trainers & found out about all the runners we headed out for a look at the field for the first race. It looked to between Songye & George Bowen & the fact that Songye had had a run & shown promise was swaying me towards him. However 5/4 was not really a betting price & I was going to leave the race alone until heading back to the viewing area on top of the owners & trainers I happened to glance at the Tote screens which had Songye at £3.20 with close to £4k in the win pool, now I've had a bet on the Tote before & the dividend as been nothing like the estimated return but with the field going behind a small wager seemed in order. I'll never know what the win return might have paid because having seemingly got on top of him a furlong out Songye was worried out of it in the last 50 yards by the battling back George Bowen with 5l's back to the 3rd, I'll return to the Tote dividend thing later. Now comes the first bit of being on the inside as such. Graham knows a few faces & reported that one had just informed him that the connections of Fast Act in the other 2yo race would be "Disappointed" if he didn't win. Graham was backing Fahey's Bahamian Sunrise & was wondering if he should jump ship, I went for a look at them & decided that Fast Act looked well enough, a trip to the boards & a bet at 11/4 was secured. Fast Act took the lead a furlong out & cleared away to win by just over a length from the staying on Bahamian Sunrise to leave me quite pleased & Graham wishing he'd changed his bet. Graham's got Dodina in the next & despite the fact we're here for other races he says Frank & myself might as well join him & the others which is the first of four trips into the paddock for myself & five for them. Not much gleaned pre race because the trainer is Brian Ellison & I think I said when he did that Cheltenham preview night he's bloody hard to understand with the Irish accent in a low voice & really I'd need subtitles. She ran quite well for 6th & the interesting thing here was the jockey Tom Eaves thinks she's ready to win again but needs dropping in class having won a seller in April & this was a pretty hot class 4 handicap, I'll be watching where she runs in the next few weeks. I had Bondi Beach Boy in the trixie bet in this & he seemed to be going well in front but then was wandering around under pressure in the last furlong & came 4th. Straight back in again for Graham's other runner Fazza, the main topic here seemed to be the fact that two had come out leaving 15 runners & knocking the places down to three, trainer Edwin Tuer informed us with a smile that nobody had ever paid him to take one out. He might as well have taken Fazza out because she wasn't very good in coming 11th & Graham was expecting a bit better I think because she'd run well at York the last time. Ventura Quest was 5th beaten just over 3l's for my trixie, staying on without ever looking like getting there. Straight back in again, this time for Balducci & there's quite a few of us, Jason is thinking he'll run a big race but is worried by the draw. Danny Tudhope comes out & he's even more worried & doesn't think he'll be able to get over & lead which is what he'd like to do & off they go. This time there's 16 runners so it's four places, I'm on with the betfair place market, at least I hope I am, do I go win, each way or place only on the Tote? I decide to take the 5/1 win only. Off they go & he can't get over as we feared but he runs well & stays on for a good 3rd, I'm happy with that so long as I've been matched. Danny reports after that he seemed to think Balducci didn't put it all in because he sulked a bit having been unable to lead. The 11lb hike for the Nottingham win sees him up to 93 & he's in a race at Windsor on Sunday off that mark, I would think it may come a bit quick after yesterday but will keep an eye out. Back in again where it's Frank's turn with the Richard Fahey trained High Office who's now an 8yo & hasn't won for over three years but is creeping back up the weights again because he keeps getting placed. I've thought for a long time that the handicapper is most unfair, that last win was off 84 & over 30 starts later he's running off just 4lb lower, his other three career wins were off marks in the 70's back in 2010 & at his age he's not going to be getting better is he, give the poor old bugger a chance for Christ sake. Maybe the handicapper will relent after yesterday where High Office trailed home last. Back to the Tote. Graham backed Noble Alan ew on the Tote in this, just as they were loading & showing £13+ the win & £3.50 as so the place. After Noble Alan's win the return was £6.90 & £2.70, he was not impressed, you'd think in this day & age that you could get a better Idea of the likely return a minute or so before the off. Time for me to depart but they were in again for the last with the 3yo filly Angel Flores. Now this is really interesting because Richard Fahey informed us before the previous race that she was favourite but that she hadn't being working well at home. He'd been hoping that she'd be showing more by now because she hadn't been seen since winning at Wolverhampton in November & really they were running to see if she would wake up at the track. She came 6th having raced keenly & faded so it seems that she may have woken up for going racing but needed the run. Just looking at the result you might see a 3/1f that didn't run that well but knowing what we did you would have left her alone & watch with interest where she fetches up next. Nothing from the trixie but having arrived home I find the place bet on Baducci has been matched & in fact the place SP was 2.59, the return was 24.44pts. Singles etc W/R 19-87 Stakes 1376pts Returns 1325.71pts Profit/Loss -50.29pts Multiple bets Stakes 778.25pts Returns 516.44pts Profit/Loss -261.81pts Lays W/R 1-1 Profit/Loss +9.5pts Scoop 6 -£10 Expenses £990 Dansil Dutch runs in the closing apprentice handicap at Carlisle today which I find a little surprising because I thought she might be having a bit longer off having run quite a few times & looking a bit jaded on her last start three weeks back. The positives are that it's a weak race & Josh Doyle is full of confidence having now won two of these apprentice races recently. The negatives are the sharpish trip on fast ground & is she freshened up. I said it may be best for me to leave her alone from a betting angle & at around 3/1 here that's easy enough to do. Smarty Socks is declared for Newcastle Saturday but it is likely to be bedlam up there on their big day of the flat season, pass. Re: Rio's Racing Diary As posted before Smarty Socks runs in the 3.15 at Newcastle. He ran quite well LTO at York until tiring late on & came down 4lbs for that run to 91 which is still a bit high for me for a horse that's a 10yo & who's best days are behind him. The 7f is his trip & the fast ground is what he needs, although they have watered a bit & there's stacks of rain around the Country but the report is that it's been dry & it's still quick ground. I know they want to get a win into him in what is supposed to be his last season but i don't feel it's going to be today. Ryeolliean who ran in club colours because the owner didn't have his own makes his seasonal return in the last race. It's a bit easier with the jolly & last evenings winner Top of the Glas defecting but it still looks a warm enough little handicap for a horse that had ringworm & is running for the first time since last October. He did win nicely here then & I was looking forward to seeing this one but at around 7/2 I can leave him alone. The only bet this afternoon is in the Listed Empress stakes for 2yo fillies at Newmarket. The form standard looks to be set by Littlemissblakeney's run in 5th in the Queen Mary. All her runs though have been at 5f & i'm not sure that this stiff 6f is going to suit her here. Having run the speed numbers over the race I have Parsley just top by a point from Bonnie Grey & Littlemissblakeney next. Bonnie Grey was found out at this level at Sandown behind Tiggy Wiggy while Parsey steps up in class having scored in good style at Goodwood. Zeb un Nisa & Tigrilla both also step up in class having won maidens easily but I'll go with the numbers & have a bit on Parsley who's stable have a fine record in the race. The other possible today was Doncaster's evening meeting but the Kaiser Chiefs are on after racing & it's likely to be rammed & the rain doesn't help. However a former workmate has been in touch & he's going so he's asked me for some tips (foolish boy) Having provided him with my selections it would be remiss of me not to have a bit on myself so in no great depth.... Wall Street Boss looked fairly progressive on the aw & was only beaten a head in a similar race on turf debut LTO, should be more to come. Theirs a long odds on one for my mate Hamdan in the next, it looks a bit of a penalty kick but with the dead eight runners I've gone for Bond Empire who was going to debut at Redcar last week but was taken out when kicking Raul de Silva across the parade ring, no need to tell Raul to watch himself mounting tonight methinks. I've given him Rocky Desert in the 2yo maiden but I'm scratching the head trying to see why Johnston's Freight Train is as short as 5/4 when not exactly setting the world alight on debut at Haydock a couple of weeks ago. Ok plenty of the yards come on for a run but there's a couple in here that could be decent on their first start & rather than back one I've laid the jolly instead which my mate would have no idea how to do. Amadeus Wolfe Tone returned to form LTO & is still on a good mark up 4lbs & should give a run for the money in the 7.05. The most interesting one of the evening is Bishop's Castle in the 7.40. I backed him at York LTO & thought that Oisin Murphy gave him rather a lot to do in a big field & he was doing his best work at the death, I'm expecting him to be a bit nearer this evening in a race that looks a little biteasier than the last one & is a furlong less so he'll need to be. Most of these look a bit exposed & I've had a single on here. I've gone with the progressive pair of Johara & High on Life & told him to toss a coin. The last rac e looks a good chance for Elizabeth Coffee to get her head back in front after a good 2nd LTO with Ela Goog la Mou needing to bounce back from a poor last run & the other one with any recent form Coillte Cailin still a maiden. Bets. Parsley 10pts @ 11/2 Bet365 BOG. Bond Empire 2.5pts ew @ 25/1 Tote BOG. Bishop's Castle 20pts @ 4/1 Boylesports BOG. Lay Freight Train for 10pts @ 2.2 to lose 12pts betfair. Wall Street Boss 11/2 Amadeus Wolfe Tone 7/1 Elizabeth Coffee 13/8 1pt trixie + 3 x 2pt singles = 10pts staked Tote BOG. Puppet Theatre is declared for Southwell on Monday & I have asked for a badge. Re: Rio's Racing Diary Not a lot of time because I'm going to Southwell today where Puppet Theatre runs in the last. A quick round up of Saturday. Parsley ran a cracker in stormy conditions to finish 2nd despite taking a fair old hike in the betting. At Doncaster Bond Empire didn't want to go in & then didn't want to come out & ended up tailed off, the odds on shot won but looked beat until the runner up gave it him back. Bishop's Castle was ridden prominently this time & had just got on top of the leader when the old boy Extraterrestrial scooted up the far rail to foil him & the bit of a gamble, rather that than sit at the back & never get involved. Got the lay wrong when Freight Train steamed home by 3l's+. Wall Street Boss ran well enough for 4th in a blanket finish in the first of the trixie bets but Amadeus Wolfe Tone was one of those "In rear, some late headway" one's that I don't like. Elizabeth Coffee Hosed up in the last despite a drift to 2/1 to at least get some return, 6pts back. Singles etc W/R 19-90 Stakes 1411pts Returns 1325.71pts Profit/Loss -85.29pts Multiple bets Stakes 788.25pts Returns 522.44pts Profit/Loss -265.81pts Lays W/R 1-2 Profit/Loss -2.5pts Scoop 6 -£10 Expenses £990 Puppet Theatre came from Mark Johnston's with no worthwhile form & a dislike of the stalls, however on her first run for us at Redcar she ran a good race after not wanting to load but breaking well & holding a chance coming to the final furlong before blowing up. She then ran at Southwell over today's distance & this time missed the break & was a not disgraced 5th beaten just over 4l's, Sam James who rides her again here thought that had she broke better she would have been close to placing & the hope is she traps better today although the draw could have been kinder. Reading the comments it's hoped she can run into a place & what's interesting is the danger is given as the stable's other runner Pim Street who was 4l's behind Puppet LTO when really well backed but would have needed the run after five months off. Bound to be better today & I've backed both of them & may do a small exacta (reversed :spank) or a swinger at the track. It's actually pretty dreadful fare but I've had a trixie plus for interest & may play in the two maiden races when I've had a look. There's a couple come out of the first including the fancied Heska, Misstemper might bounce back on the aw after flopping on turf debut on good to soft LTO. However Meebo seems to run well here & has been close the last twice & can perhaps land a race at the 20th attempt. Fast Finian showed nothing on his return at Yarmouth but that was a class 3 & he'd been running well last year at a much higher grade than the class 6 claimer he's in at 3.45. He has aw form at the other tracks but the surface here is different, if he handles it it he ought to be beating this lot if anything like his best. When I was last here 97 days ago I had a return from the debut making From Frost who bolted up despite being a bit green & who returns to the track over the same distance here. This 4.45 is the best race on the card, Sellingallthetime also hosed up over C&D in a lower grade before throwing in a shocker when favourite at Donny LTO, clearly goes here & could bounce back. Daydreamer is up 3lb for a narrow win at Lingfield on the polytrack which seems fair but needs to show he can do as well on the fibresand. Master Dan was a reasonable 2nd over a furlong less here two runs back but looks a plodder. Not sure why From Frost has been off so long but he goes fresh & on the track so he'll do here. Bets. Puppet Theatre 5pts win @ 12/1 Stan James BOG & 5pts place @ 4.6 betfair Pim Street 10pts @ 7/2 Bet365 BOG Meebo 5/2 Fast Finian 4/1 From Frost 10/3 1pt trixie + 3 x 2pt singles = 10pts staked Betvictor BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary An update from Monday & early thoughts for tomorrow. Interesting how the smaller gaffs such as Southwell & Wolverhampton can provide you with a voucher for something to eat in the owners & trainers whilst most of the so called top tracks can barely stir themselves to offer you a cup of coffee. Having availed myself of the said freebie meal its off to the parade ring for a look at the runners for the first. Not a lot to report looks wise but what I assume are the owners of Meebo who I have lumbered with my selection for the event are here & then when I go round on to the stand they position themselves just to my left. Down the straight they come & at around the furlong pole she hits the front but then Misstemper is closing "Hang on, hang on" plead the pair, I feel for them I really do, she tries her best but gets nutted on the line, twenty runs & she's been 2nd seven times, its a hard game. I've no interest in the seller up next but watch Shane Kelly make himself look a complete pillock, he hits the front on the bit at the furlong pole on First in Command & looks round both ways like a clever bugger, however the 7lb claimer Charlie Bennett has got the odds on favourite Abi Scarlet in top gear now after looking like she been run off her feet at halfway & before Kelly can react he's sailed past to win going away from Kelly who decides all too late to ask for an effort. I thought that the stewards might have a word about attempted showboating but there's not one peep from them the whole evening & its not the only incident worth a question being asked about. 2yo's up next & there's no doubt that the pick is Mark Johnston's Polarisation, he's fine big animal & looked more like a 3yo. However there is a problem, he's walking round with five legs, oh hang on its not a leg he's clearly interested in the filly in front of him. Its not a filly though its another colt Capitaine, maybe he's that way inclined or maybe like me he thinks its a female because Capitaine is so fat he could be pregnant. Anyway then Polarisation decides he doesn't want to go up the shoot into the main parade ring & he's starting to get rather warm. By the time I get round to the front of the stand he's a shade of odds on & I'm not backing him but there's nothing that stands out to beat him so do I fire up betfair & lay him? I decide to sit it out. He runs on for a one paced 2nd behind Spindle who's had two runs & shows the benefit, Capitaine walks out of the stalls & gets so far behind he's lucky to beat them home in the next race. I'll watch for Polarisation but would want to see him in the prelims before having a bet. Fast Finian is well backed in the claimer & leads to halfway before virtually disappearing & the non existent stewards ought to be having a word. Looking at the 3yo maidens the pick is Air Squadron but there's none of the 7/2 he was earlier in the day & by the time I'm looking at the boards he's 7/4 & goes off at 6/4, pass. Good job because he's awful, granted they all are apart from the filly Dino Mite who takes it up after a furlong & runs them ragged to win by just the 18l's :eek There's a lad on Air Squadron who I've not heard of, Patrick O'Donell, that was his 21st ride & he's had one winner, however he's pulling up & nearly loses 4th place which carries a bit of prize money but he gets away with it & hangs on by a short head. Now this is one the stewards will love, a nobody dropping his hands who they can get in & bollock up hill & down dale except it never happens & I suspect that they are not even there. Ok no harm done, it didn't effect the betting or the prize money but I'm surprised nothing was said. From Frost drifts but repeats his runaway performance of three months ago to rout them by 9l's. I might be interested in this one again when he runs but suspect that the handicapper will clobber him so hard he might never win again. Now its our turn. Puppet Theatre looks well. Out come the jocks, Danny Tudhope's on Pim Street & not saying a lot, nowt new there then. Sam James is hoping to get out on terms & be nearer to the pace this time. Up they get & off we go & when we get to the ring Pim Street is on the slide big style & Puppet is only 5/1 & ends up going off 9/2. There are a few muttering that we've been put away but I've got the 12's :p Stalls open & out she flies, straight to the front & leads round the top bend. Into the straight & Sam kicks & goes clear, go on girl. Then at the furlong pole she hits a brick wall & gets swamped & she's 5th which is two places better than the disappointing Pim Street. Sam reports that once she'd broken well & got across to the front he didn't want to take a pull & disappoint her, we agree that she didn't get home & the report on the website says back to 7f next time. Did we get put away? No I don't think so. Would I back Pim Street again? No I would not. Can Puppet Theatre win a race? Yes & I hope to be there when she does. Nothing from the 20pts on the singles but the 9/2 SP for From Frost means 11pts back from the 10pts staked on the trixie bet. Singles etc W/R 19-92 Stakes 1431pts Returns 1325.71pts Profit/Loss -105.29pts Multiple bets Stakes 798.25pts Returns 533.44pts Profit/Loss -264.81pts Lays W/R 1-2 Profit/Loss -2.5pts Scoop 6 -£10 Expenses £1010 Balducci runs in the last at Haydock tomorrow & I have a badge. I'll post thoughts about that in the morning but I've had a punt on three races this evening. The opener is pretty dire but Evervescent has been running quite well, should like dropping back to 10f's from the 12f's LTO & Paul Hanagan is back on top having been up when a close up 3rd in a similar race off the same mark at Newbury in May. Holy Angel ran well off 2lb higher at Carlisle last week & is due to go back up 6lb for that so he really ought to be trying in the 3.20. The drop back to a mile from the reappearance 10f's should help Ejadah in the 4.50 & he's the unexposed one in this field. Re: Rio's Racing Diary The plan with Balducci is to try to get to the lead today which he did when winning at Nottingham but couldn't do from the draw at Carlisle LTO. There are though at least two others who can/could front run & most of the field would like to race prominently so I'd be a bit worried that they might go a bit fast, still we'll see. He's said to in good form at home & if he traps well he should at least hit the frame, he's on the slide this morning & is 6/1 generally as I write & with a fifth the place for the first three the 2.5 to place on betfair seems reasonable & I've had a play on the place market to small stakes & will probably have a small win bet on track. Looking at the 3.20 again Holy Angel is a best of 5/1 now, with a fifth the place terms again the 2.28 to hit the frame seems fair enough. There are two 2yo races. In the maiden at 2.50 the Hamdan newcomer Faydhan is going to have to run to a good level to beat Dutch Connection on that one's fine 3rd in a Salisbury class 2 on debut, he has a useful speed number from that race & I may play after having had a look at them. The other 2yo race is a class 4 novice where Lieutenant Kaffee heads my numbers from a debut win at Nottingham on fast ground, he's going to like the extra furlong & I'm thinking I may play here too but want to wait because he's a runner for the racing club that had two runners at Carlisle last week & I'm thinking I may be running into Frank & Graham again today & would like to know if they think they can beat the odds on Epithet from Godolphin among others. Bets. Holy Angel 10pts to place @ 2.28 Balducci 10pts to place @ 2.5 both betfair. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary

Looks like u had a good day
I've said it before but this game is a real rollercoaster & yes I had a good day, well in fact I had a great day in the end but I will tell the truth as always & by the end of the third race I wanted to go home but I'm getting ahead of myself. Just before 1pm I'm sat in Haydock's carpark eating the sandwich that I've brought with me, looking out at the puddles & it's clear that there's been a decent amount of rain. Having finished dining it's off to the owners & trainers entrance where along with the badge & racecard I'm given a ticket for a free lunch :eyes Last time I had the owners head on here was May 2012 & all you got was a cup of coffee, having had a moan about the so called top tracks being out done by the gaffs in the lunch stakes I ought to have known they'd be doing freebies now. I'm stood outside the owners & trainers bar with a coffee (can't sit because the wooden seats are all soaked) when its given out that the going has changed from good to firm to good. That well known owner Michael Owen & tribe wander up & into the bar closely followed by the slightly less well known owners Graham & Frank. Having exchanged greetings they persuade me to join them for the free lunch which is a very nice individual cottage pie & veg but which I don't really want because I've already eaten. Stuffed to bursting point we wander out for the first race where they've both backed Ferryview Place who runs well enough for 2nd without ever looking like getting to the all the way leader Watersmeet & does much better than the disappointing Evervescent who plods on for a never dangerous 4th. Frank's not only got Lieutenant Kaffee today but Tagtale is running for him down at Yarmouth in the 2.40 so while he & Graham go looking for a telly I go for a walk round & have just run into some other club members when it's given out that the going is now good to soft. There's been no rain since I arrived so how come the goings changed? What's happened is that Kirkland Talksbollocks has watered last night & after the morning rain the grounds gone from good to firm to good to soft, we'd all like to know why they didn't just change the going before the first race & just how much of the wet stuff did the silly pillock chuck on the track last evening? Having worked out the day's fare based on fast ground the form book can now be hung on a bit of string behind the bog door where better use can be made of it than trying to find a winner or two! Frank & Graham return to report that Tagtale has managed a modest 4th in the five runner Yarmouth seller. Up next is the 2yo maiden which looks between the once raced Dutch Connection & the now odds on Faydhan who's on debut. Both look well enough but in what seems a two horse affair the 15/8 Dutch Connection seems to be the way to go. Off the final bend & Dutch Connection is challenging for the lead, Ian Bartlett's on the commentary & has just reported that Faydhan seems to be under pressure & not finding much when the penny drops & he sweeps past the lot of them & careers away to win by 6l's from Dutch Connection. Later on it's announced that Faydhan is now the new jolly for next years 2000 Guineas & indeed having had a look he heads some books & is a general 20/1 shot, he looked good but there's a heck of a long way to go to get to that level. Graham's backed Holy Angel but like me tears up the ticket when he completely misses the break & gets left six lengths at the start, he does too much chasing them & as the form line says he's "Never a factor" & comes a remote 6th. Graham's not a fan of David Allan it seems & after this even less so, the stewards were here it seems....
David Allan, the rider of HOLY ANGEL (IRE), unplaced, reported that the gelding had missed the break.
Good lord he didn't did he. At this point I'm totally fed up, I've had too much to eat & feel most uncomfortable & it doesn't help that it's very humid & really I could just pack up & leave. Frank talks me into going into the parade ring for Lieutenant Kaffee with him which is nice of him. He's a good looking sort actually (the horse not Frank) but the lad that's with him doesn't know how he'll go on the ground. Out comes Paul Hanagan & we ask him what its like out there, "Pretty soft" is the reply. Up he gets & off they go, we wander round to the front & Frank's trying to decide if he's backing him, I tell him I'm not going to stiffen him for him by having a bet & he decides he's not playing either. The stalls open & Paul drops in at the back of the five & looks to be going well if a tad keen. Up the straight & the odds on Epithet makes a move to challenge Diaz in the lead but here comes Lieutenant Kaffee up the outside, Epithet curls up at the furlong pole & drops away, Lieutenant Kaffee is running green but in the last 50 yards gets on top of Diaz to win a bit clever in the end by three parts of a length. Neither of us has backed him but we're both happy, Frank's never been that lucky when going as an owner & I'm chuffed for him, we head round to the winner's to greet him where Paul tells us he's just a big baby & there should be loads more to come. Everybody's congratulating us but he's nothing to do with me at all but I'm snapping away with the camera, we then go off to the winners room for a drop of the bubbly stuff. That's cheered me up no end & after letting the next race slide by it's off for a look at Ejadah who's walking round sporting a net muzzle which is most unusual, she looks fine though & it's back off to the front to watch. I know she has heavy ground form & decide that I'm having a proper bet, she's 10/3 but one board is 7/2 which I take & then grab a seat. Off they go & she's up there early & takes it up leaving the back, they line up for home at the 4f pole & Paul decides to set sail & see if they can catch her, by the time she hits the last furlong she's gone clear & powers on to the line to win by 4.5l's & now I'm in a seriously good mood. Even the SP of 9/2 & the fact that I get rule 4'd for 15p because one wouldn't go in & was withdrawn is not too much of a downer, Balducci is up next. There are now two non runners taking it to seven, it won't effect the number of places for the betfair place only bet though, what do I do about backing him? Into the parade ring where Danny Tudhope tells us he's going to bounce out & grab the lead, we're a bit worried that he might get taken on but Danny seems confident it won't be a problem. Back round to watch & as we pass the Tote I see he's £11 odd, I decide to back him on the machine, if we do win I can pick it up any time but if I go with the bokies I'll have to dash to them to get paid out. The stalls open & he's straight to the front, after a furlong he takes a bit of a pull, then freewheels round the bottom bend. As they line up he takes another pull & stacks them up behind before kicking for home at the two pole. They're after him but he isn't stopping & keeps pulling out more when they try to close, he keeps on well & is actually going away at the line. In the space of two hours I've gone from totally fed up to over the moon, even the slightly disappointing Tote return of £6.90 fails to stop me smiling. Back to the winners for pictures, back to the room for another few bubbles, back home & even the crawl on the M60 can't deflate me. With the reduction factor on the place bet I got 19.88pts back for the 20pts stacked. The SP helped the trixie bet but again the rule 4 meant a slight loss with 9.65pts returned from a stake of 10pts. It doesn't do much for the posted numbers but the two wins at the track mean I'm more than happy. Re: Rio's Racing Diary

I'm sure you're probably aware but Balducci is entered tomorrow at Ayr. Are you off on a jolly up to Scotland?
No but I wouldn't mind :p I like Ayr but its a bit short notice & there's not a lot of info on the website, I suspect this is because David O'Meara & Jason who's running the site have been in France at the sales hopefully buying us some new toys to play with :hope I've been busy so swerved the last two days, from Monday it's bonkers here in Yorkshire with 17 days of racing in the next 21 :eek Rio.

I've looked through the fixtures and think I can do about 8 days in the next month. Possibly Ripon on Monday but racing looks a bit poor. York on Friday and Saturday. Donny 17th and 24th night meetings, Ponty on 18th and 27th, Beverley night meeting on 21st, York on 25th. Let's hope the sun comes out for us at the weekend. :ok

Re: Rio's Racing Diary A good job I didn't head for Ayr yesterday because Balducci was taken out along with three others with the fast ground given as the reason but in our lads case it was thought that asking him to lug 10-5 round on the ground only three days after Haydock might not have been a good idea. I would suspect he'll go up around 5/6lb which would have him looking at the bigger sort of handicaps at around a mile. The 2yo Regal Accolade was a very disappointing 23l's last of 12 at Beverley on Saturday & reportedly has them scratching their heads a bit because while he wasn't expected to win he wasn't expected to chuck in such a shocker either having been showing a bit more at home apparently. One more run would see him get a handicap mark & I would think that he'll run a similar sort of race NTO to get a basement rating to give them something to work with in nurseries. A potentially busy week starting with a run out to Ripon this evening. I fancy a couple & have another two in a trixie plus with one down at Windsor. The opener is a modest looking 2yo Fillies maiden auction where the form standard is set by Johnston's Rose of Kiev who's had five goes already & the pick of those was the 3rd two runs back to Juventas at Newmarket & I have her top rated on that. However she threw in a stinker at Ponty two weeks ago when I was there & she'd need to bounce back from that with no apparent excuse for the run. Gleneely Girl ran very green on debut when I was at Nottingham with Balducci & the penny dropped very late there over 5f & she ran on quite well. This extra furlong here should suit & she'll know more this time. O'Meara runs two, Blazing Rose has shown little in three runs & Jebediah Shine was last of five over 5f at Ripon on debut when looking in need of it. The interesting thing with her is despite being beaten over 9l's in 6th of nine at Catterick on her next start the speed number is reasonable & has her second rated here. She would look to have a bit of ability but is she going to be running for a low handicap mark here or will she be going for a win in a weak maiden & run the risk of ruining the chance of a low rating by running close up without winning? She might be worth a little bit at 25/1ish but is one to keep an eye on anyway. Of the unraced ones Rosalie Bonheur seems best fancied & the yard can get one ready but she didn't sell for only £500 when sent to the sales. I'll have a look at these beforehand as usual. The first of the trixie selections is Traditionelle in the 7.10. Seems to be improving & the 2nd at Donny LTO in a race with a muddling pace is fair form, likely to be a stronger run race here which should suit & can go close off this 3lb higher mark. I was quite taken with Westerly when he won for Mowgli at Ponty a couple of weeks back & an opening mark of 71 looks reasonable for a yard that does well at this track. Miss Tree has run quite well in three maidens but seems to lack a finishing kick. Button Down is nicely bred & has also run fair races in maidens the last twice but I think that the opening 79 might be a bit stiff. Westerly is the choice here. William Haggas can take the 8.10 as well with Telmeyd. Not a bad debut at Newbury & then skated home in a maiden at Chester in late May in a decent time, should be more to come now handicapping. The danger looks to be the Lady Cecil trained Sunrise Star who hosed up in an egg & spoon maiden at Bath on her return, should go well but this is tougher. Dutch Breeze won over C&D when I was here the other week but that was a penalty kick & this is much harder. Lincoln is a fine big sort but has just one win from 16 runs & has been 2nd seven times, still on a career high mark here & it's about time the handicapper gave him a break. Down at Windsor in the 8.50 Golden Journey can win this having scored well upped to this distance at Goodwood LTO, a 4lb rise seems fair & he ran a good race at the track when not beaten far last year. The obvious danger is I'm Harry who's won five of his last seven & was just beaten a nose off this mark at Donny on Friday, drops back a couple of furlongs here though on a sharper track. Oratorio's Boy should go well under Richard Hughes off 2lb higher than the narrow win at Leicester LTO but Golden Journey looks open to more progress at the trip. Thankyou Very Much chased a strong pace at Beverley over 10f's LTO & didn't get home, ran well there the time before off tonight's mark & the drop back to a mile here should suit, goes on any ground & the draw in 2 means she can grab a good position. Bets. Westerly 20pts @ 5/2 Betvictor Telmeyd 20pts @ 5/2 Hills 10pt double above pair, 9/4 Westerly, Hills all BOG Traditionelle 5/1 Golden journey 4/1 Thankyou Very Much 5/1 1pt Trixie + 3 x 2pt singles = 10pts staked Coral BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Yet another evening of changes, both in the mood & the weather. Mowgli had come straight from work so when I arrive he's sat on a bench near the bandstand reading the Racing Post & I plonk myself down & make some comment along the lines of "This is what it should be like at this time of the year" It's a very nice evening, warm & the sun is out, a bit of a natter & then an essential task, making short work of a chocolate topped cone containing the excellent Charlotte's mint ice cream :p Down to business & a look at these 2yo fillies. Slightly disappointing that Jebediah Shine is now a non runner. We're both looking at taking on Johnston's Rose of Kiev & we both go for the Nottingham runner up Gleneely Girl. The opening show had those two & the debut making Rosalie Bonheur all around the 3/1 mark. On returning to the betting ring that one's shortened a bit & I decide to take the 10/3 Gleneely Girl & then Mowgli takes the 7/2 a few seconds later :eyes We take up a spot on the stand & she hardens back to 3/1jt 2ndf with Rose of Kiev & Rosalie Bonheur goes off the 9/4f. Rose of Kiev & Gleneely Girl chase the pace & Rose of Kiev curls up tamely as Gleneely Girl takes it up at two out. Rosalie Bonheur is held up & running green but moves up to challenge & hits the front inside the last furlong, Gleneely Girl fights back & for a second looks like she might get back up but at the line she's held by a head with 7l's back to the 3rd with Rose of Kiev a poor 5th. Close but no cigar. Mowgli backs Secret Applause & Disclosure in the next, I'm on Traditionelle. His pair never really get involved, mine is held up at the back on the near rail & two out is all dressed up with nowhere to go. She's switched one way then the other & then back to the rail where a gap appears & she's flying & half a furlong out I'm thinking she's getting there but Sartori defies her & the curse of the best turned out to win by a neck. I'm on Westerly next & Mowgli's keen too, the opening show is 3/1 & then he goes 7/2 which Mowgli takes & we go for a look. He looks ok, so does Button Down, Mabdhool is warm & Asteroidia is in a right sweat. Back to the stand & off they go. Asteroidia is in the lead, Westerly is stone last & not really traveling. Six furlongs out & Liam Jones is shoving away & getting little response. Down the straight & Asteroidia is still in the lead & she ain't stopping, Button Down tries to close but hangs & makes no impression & the seriously well bred Asteroidia (Sea the Stars- Speciosa) makes all. Westerly is last, beaten the best part of ten lengths having never really gone a yard, we both have seriously long faces as do the stewards it would appear....

The Stewards considered the running of WESTERLY, ridden by Liam Jones and trained by William Haggas, which finished unplaced. They noted the trainer's representative could offer no explanation for the filly’s performance. They ordered WESTERLY to be routine tested.
Just to add to the black mood the sky is now beginning to go the same colour. Sunrise Star has defected just before that race for the next race & as we pass the bookies boards there's a moment of light relief when one rather large chap nearly breaks is neck running to get the 85/40 Telmeyd when the prices come up but they've still got Sunrise Star in the race. He's two strides from the joint & travelling at a fairly impressive rate for somebody the best part of twenty stones when the board blinks off & on again with Sunrise Star now gone & Telmeyd now just 11/10. I wish I'd got the camera out because his face was a picture. I'm not unhappy that she's defected because I have her as the big danger to Telmeyd, we go round for a look & he seems the part. Back to the betting ring & I'm surprised to see he's drifting & ends up 6/4, Dutch Breeze is the one for money & ends up 7/4, Mowgli backs the outsider Galvanize each way. Off they go & Galvanize is bowling along in front on the rail with Telmeyd to his right & Dutch Breeze in between. Two out & Dutch Breeze is done for, mines traveling much the best & eases away from them at the furlong pole, Lincoln chases him from off the pace but isn't getting there & Telmeyd wins by 2l's easing down, Galvanize drops back to last. I needed that & I'm trying to work out the rule 4, probably 30p I decide, still its a winner & with the cold light of 20/20 vision I'm now thinking that 6/4 looks a big price. I'll say it again, the handicapper is not being fair to Lincoln & his connections, he certainly won't be dropping his mark after this & is more likely to stick him up two or three pounds. Back round for a few snaps & the leaden sky is now beginning to drop water on us, not much but it has the look of more to come about it. The runners for the 3yo+ maiden come out, we agree that Hesbaan is one to take on, the newcomer Lockhart was being well backed before I left home & looks alright without being a standout sort. The best looking pair are Clabare apart from the frothing at the mouth & Khalid Abdullah's Interject, on returning to the betting ring we both back that one & Mowgli backs Clabare each way. Off they go & Bold Captain sets off to make all with Interject tracking him & seemingly going well. Round the top bend & Hanagan's scrubbing away on Hesbaan already, Interject's still bang there & at two out Doyle asks for an effort, he's struggling to get to Bold Captain though & Philip Makin's got a bit up his sleeve on the leader & wins by half a length. Hasbaan stays on to get 2nd from Interject on the line after being under the pump all the way up the straight, Lockhart plods on for 4th. We dive in the William Hills under the stand to watch the 8.50 from Windsor but the betting only shows six runners & Golden Journey is not among them, it seems that heavy rain before racing there has turned it on the soft side. The rain here is now more steady, Mowli's had enough & isn't staying for the last, we walk past the pre parade & I decide that driving home wet through is not appealing either so its off to the car park. A few minutes later & I'm on the A1 heading South & I run into a real downpour & bailing out seems to be the best decision. Back home & I fire up the laptop & find that in my absence Thankyou Very Much has landed the finale having been well backed to do so & the evening has turned out fairly well after all. That last win returned 20pts from the 10pt trixie bet with effectively a 3pt single at 5/1 & 2pts back from the non runner, the 10pt loss on the double means a break even on the multiples. The rule 4 on Telmeyd's race was 25p so 57.5pts back from the 40pts stake. The first is a nursery & having done my speed numbers I have British Embassy top rated on the middle of his three runs at Salisbury & I had a small bet early doors & am somewhat surprised to see that the price has now dropped off a cliff. It isn't my millions, I'm only on at minimum stakes but it is rather intriguing & I'm wondering if I've stumbled on a plot? We shall see. Bet. Re: Rio's Racing Diary I'm still trying to decide if that was a plot job or not at Ponty on Tuesday, British Embassy ended up going off 7/2f but was held up & had rather a lot to do turning in. He ran on well enough for 2nd but the bird had flown in the shape of Miami Carousel who despite the lad on him dropping his whip won by 3.5l's. Watching the race the best decision of the day was not to go because the weather looked foul & the going changed from good to firm to soft after that race, ok the report is that the rain was torrential but the track had been "selectively watered" & this is yet another example of tinkering with nature. One day we shall arrive in the 21st Century, probably just before we get to the 22nd Century :eyes On the basis that that (mis)infomation best keep stakes to a minimum so it's a trixie plus bet & a possible play in the three maidens after a look. 2.00 Most of these seem pretty exposed with the possible exception of Sleeping Apache who won a bit of a nothing maiden at Redcar LTO & makes his handicap debut off 75 & joint top weight here, he might be able to defy the burden but the bare form is nowt. Be Royale won on fast ground at Yarmouth off 6lb less two runs back but then was given to much to do at Beverley off today's mark, this track will suit better & should go well. Oak Bluffs appears to be vying for top spot in the market based on being from Richard Fahey's or the hope that the extra furlong might bring about some improvement because the form of all six runs is pretty poor. I'm going to go with Red Paladin who's back to the same mark as for his last win over C&D in August last year, that was on fast but he seems to handle any ground & has run well here on other occasions too. I have run the speed numbers over the Group 2 July stakes at Newmarket where I have Mind of Madness just top in a tight race, however they can't make their mind up if it's going to chuck it down or not there either so I'll pass. Doncaster 2.30 The first division of the 2yo maiden & over half are making their debut's. Of the one's that have run Pivot Point has the best of my numbers from his second run at Yarmouth where he was 6l's behind Belardo who runs in the aforementioned July Stakes, it wouldn't need one of the newcomers to be a world beater to land this & a look at them first is a must. The second division at 3.05 contains more that have had a run including the odds on Burnt Sugar who was runner up to Justice Well on his one start but I have the time of that as quite poor & the winner was only a fair 5th in the Chesham beaten nearly 8l's. The interesting one on the numbers is Yorkshire Dales who was 5l's behind the quite useful looking Ustinov at Nottingham & he should improve for that run. Again I'll be having a look at them first. The older maiden at 3.40 is most interesting, it contains Kommander Kirkup who I've seen run a couple of times & who looks a serious dodge pot having got turned over at 4/7 a couple of months back over C&D & he sports first time blinkers here. This looks a much hotter maiden too with Hamdan's Marmoom who's gone well on both maiden starts & the winner's of both races have gone on to land Listed contests. Secret Hint also ran well on his sole start last October at Kempton & the race has thrown up several winners since. Noseda runs John Caesar who cost 220,000gns & while the stables still not pulling up trees they are off the mark now & running better. I'm tempted to lay Kommander Kirkup & if I can do at 2/1 or shorter I will do but I see it as a drifter & again after a look I think I'll probably back something else. We are getting to the time of year where the 3yo improving types start to well against the older more exposed sorts. One that fits that profile is Buredyma in the 4.15 who's two from two & only 2lb higher than the second of those wins at Chester in a similar race to this LTO. Both wins have seen juice in the ground but if it does dry out that shouldn't be too much of a problem either. The main danger looks to be the unexposed Water Hole who returns from 216 days off & landed a Lingfield maiden when last seen, yet to run on grass but is quite well bred, however the recent run of Buredyma sways me her way. From Frost who I have seen win twice at Southwell by wide margin's makes his turf bow in the 4.50, he carries a 6lb pen for the second of those wins but is due to go up 10lbs so he's 4lb well in here on official ratings. Again he's a 3yo taking on older exposed sorts apart from perhaps the 4yo Quest for More who's only had the one run this season & might have more to give. Your never sure if these impressive looking aw winner's are going to do the business on turf but I have to say I'd be disappointed if From Frost can't beat these & depending how things go I may have a bet at the track. Bet. Red Paladin 10/1 Buredyma 85/40 From Frost 15/8 1pt trixie + 3 x 2pts singles = 10pts staked Betvictor BOG ?Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary I ended up leaving Doncaster with a profit yesterday but rather feeling that I'd missed a trick or two & it should have been better, however there's also no doubt it could have been worse. Things got off to a flyer with Red Paladin who having opened at 11/1 went to half those odds & came through to score by a half length, off & running then & things all rosy. Next up is the first division of the 2yo maiden. The unraced Explain had been favourite but was now on the slide & didn't look anything special anyway. The one I had top rated was Pivot Point & he looked quite nice, I'd not heard of the jockey Samantha Spratt but a bit of research had revealed she was over from New Zealand where she's ridden some decent winners. Fire up betfair & a small win bet at 12.5 is struck with a bit more on the place at 3.55. Away they go & Sam bounces him straight to the front, grabs the near rail & attempts to make all. She very nearly pulls it off too, its not until the last 100 yards that Punk Rocker reels them in but the place bet is landed which will do even with the slight reduction for Rise to Power refusing to go in the stalls. I try to repeat the act with Yorkshire Dales in the second division but this time it doesn't come off when he's only a one paced 10l's 5th. Now is when things begin to unravel. I'm at the pre parade for the 3yo+ maiden, I'm against Kommander Kirkup who was the morning jolly but is now on the slide. There's three I want to see before any bet is struck & straight away one of them the filly Secret Hint is going round & she looks quite nice. No sign of the other two & thinking that maybe they've gone round early I wander back to the main ring. The layout at Doncaster is the best in the Country in my opinion, the parade ring is in front of the stands so to get there you pass through the betting ring & I can see that Secret Hint is 5/1. Hamdan's Marmoom is 7/4 & the Noseda newcomer who cost 220,000gns is 6's. Straight away I see Marmoom who looks the business & unless this John Caesar of Noseda's is anything I'm thinking I'll have the 7/4 even if its a bit short. Finally he turns up, now I'm not pretending to be some sort of paddock expert but anybody with the slightest idea can see that this one is a tub of lard, in fact I'm not exaggerating when I say he was waddling round the parade ring. Marmoom it is then, except the price is now 5/4 & I'm not that daft. I'm half tempted to go back to Secret Hint but decide I'll sit it out & head for the seats where I watch Marmoom go a shade of odds on. Off they go & Kommander Kirkup is towing them along with Marmoom slipstreaming him & coming to the furlong pole the Kommander does the expected & chucks in the towel. However no sooner has Marmoom hit the front than Secret Hint cruises past him & goes on to score readily by 1.75l's. Now really I ought to be pleased because I've actually dodged a bullet here but I can't help feeling I've missed out, anyway the front two should have more to come & I dare say that Kommander Kirkup will get one fall in his lap somewhere down the line but its hard to see me being on him if he does. I'm still sat on the stand when the first show pops up for the next & Buredyma is 3/1 which is a bit longer than I expected but she still heads the market. After I've been for a look to see if she has the required number of legs I return to the betting ring to see that Water Hole is now the 11/4 jolly, the market then proceeds to bounce all over the shop with Water Hole drifting out again to 4/1, Annawi shortens to 7/2jtf with Buredyma & there's late money for Starlight Serenade. Coming down the straight & Buredyma holds a chance but at 2f's out Gibbon's is hard at her & going nowhere, at the furlong pole Water Hole takes command & goes on to score a shade cleverly methinks, bugger picked the wrong one! From Frost can still land me a decent profit even if I'm going to get rule 4'd because there are now three non runners, still less to beat eh! From Frost beats nothing, in fact David Probert is rowing away so far out that its clear he's no chance before the turn into Doncaster's long straight. The one I have as the danger Quest for More wins :eyes From Frost walks over the line in last & even the stewards decide it might be worth asking what happened to a 5/4f that's won both starts by a combined 15l's....

David Probert, the rider of FROM FROST, unplaced, reported that the gelding ran flat. The Stewards ordered the gelding to be routine tested.
Ran flat, not as flat as I'm feeling, something wants testing & I think it may be my head. Time to go & I trudge back to the car feeling rather down. Really I ought not to, the 10pts posted returned 22pts from Red Paladin. I've had two punts on betfair & made a tiny profit. I dodged one with Marmoom & yet the way the last two have run I feel like the world is against me, what a game this is! "Crikey this looks hard" as the actress said to the Bishop. Aside from the Dante & Ebor meetings York's main fare tends to be big field handicaps & today features three such events on the bounce from the 3.30 onwards where there were 16, 17 & 16 runners. Four places then? No because the usual non runners see us down to 14,14 & 15, no doubt the bookies will be in uproar over this as usual :eyes Anticipating such I've have kept my stakes low with an ew lucky 15 which is a mug bet but the only one I think I'll have today, in fact had I not agreed to take Mowgli I think that I might stay at home & creosote the fence. There is a Fillies Group 3 at 2.20 where it looked like there were a few having a go at stealing some black type but three have defected here too. It looked between Ladies are Forever who's won this in 2011 & 2013 & Joyeuse & it still does, I've plumped for Ladies who usually goes well here but wouldn't be surprised to be on the wrong one again. There's one of those Stoute short one's in the 3.30, Kings Fete who's in at the bottom with the 3yo weight for age allowance & who won a nothing maiden at Sandown a month ago in reasonable style having shown promise in his only other start at Newbury before, holds an entry in the Great Voltigeur & could be anything but even I'm not that far gone to get involved at 7/4ish. I'm with Pearl Castle who won the Queen Mother Cup here LTO at the trip & who's up 6lb but should give me a run for the money :hope A 5f cavalry charge at 4.05. Top Boy has run well in two such C&D events the last twice, winning on the latter occasion, up 4lbs but that was a better race than this & should still be competitive from what looks a good draw in 14. I've backed Bishop's Castle the last twice, I'll leave him alone today & have a go with Innsbruck in the 4.40 who didn't seem to see it out at 1m 6f LTO & the drop back in trip plus first time blinkers might help. Bet Ladies are Forever 5/1 Pearl Castle 11/1 Top Boy 8/1 Innsbruck 11/1 0.5pt ew lucky 15 Betvictor BOG There's dead eight runner 2yo maiden to open where Maljaa is odds on & is just second rated on my numbers to Eye Glass, I might play after a look. Pres Rapide & Dominic Cork are joint top rated for the nursery at 2.55, the former is a C&D winner but is too short for me to back. If the other one wins I shall be sorely tempted to throw the towel in after the way that ran at Nottingham when I was there the other week. Yet again the wonderful English Summer ruins the big meeting at Newmarket where the ground is now soft (are they sure?) & I'm not tempted by that or the pretty ordinary fare being served up at Ascot either. Re: Rio's Racing Diary I'll have to do a two day update because I'm running quite late today, another day for some small multiples at York & Newmarket, there are a load of non runners already & there are some races I don't want anymore, especially the John Smith's Cup which is now down to 16 & one more would mean three places only. Ryan Moore is at York & not Newmarket so I'd expect him to be among the winners, he looks to have a fair chance on Dusky Queen in the opener, she runs well here but usually at shorter. At more than twice the price the similar profile Royal Rascal is the pick, she goes well here too & is also up to a mile having run at shorter before, the keeping on 2nd at Newcastle LTO gives hope she'll stay & she goes on any ground. The Listed race 2nd when finishing well at Ponty LTO from Waila makes her the choice under Moore for the 2.20 a Listed handicap. The extra 2f's should suit & she likes it fast so no rain please. Red Avenger is back to his best trip after a not disgraced run in the Royal Hunt Cup LTO, fast ground suits & Connor Beasley takes off a handy 3lb, 4yo's are the best age group for the John Smith's & for some reason the draw seems to have switched from low to high lately, maybe because they usually come to the stands rail these days & he's in 17. They're dropping out of the 3.30 in droves but this always looked between Kingsgate Native who even at 9yo's is still smart & the upcoming G Force who hosed up here in a handicap & then let me down a bit at Sandown. I can't split them & have backed both. I'll have a look at the 2yo's at 4.05 but I note that Polarisation of Johnston's who was the big monster of a thing at Southwell & played up a bit there before running an ok 2nd is in here & even with the obvious rise in class he will be interesting to watch before & during the race. The last is a nursery where I have Sea Wolf top rated on my time numbers from his 3rd behind Midterm Break at Beverley & he's worth a go in a race where one or two have questions to answer notably the top one Epithet who may or may not have had the ground to blame at Haydock LTO. Down at Newmarket & I'm torn by the 2.40. I want Lieutenant Kaffee who's the one that so delighted myself & Frank at Haydock to run well banged up to a Group 2 :eek but my numbers have Smaih top rated & I've had a poke at him. Gleneagles is the favourite but my numbers have him with a lot to find. Slade Power has his optimum conditions in the July Cup & I'm with him. Bets Royal Rascal 14/1 Red Avenger 14/1 Sea Wolf 7/1 Smaih 8/1 0.5pt Lucky 15 Bet365 BOG Waila 7/4 G Force 9/4 Slade power 5/2 1pt trixie + 3 x 2pt singles Waila 7/4 Kingsgate Native 11/4 Slade power 5/2 1pt trixie + 3 x 2pt singles both Hills BOG Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Two days in the sun at York. Friday The June/July Fridays are always better than the Saturdays, the racing is still good but it gets too full on the Saturdays for me, you can hardly move & the betting ring is a nightmare. Friday there was just enough there to create an atmosphere & still be able to pick your way around the assorted drunks in comfort, apart from one trek to the loo & a visit to the Betfred under the stand we never went anywhere near that end of the track yesterday. With the top rated Eye Glass taken out of the 2yo opener this left just the seven & only two places for an each way against the odds on Maljaa. Having had a look & strolled to the betting ring I decided not to bother & Mowgli backed two to beat the jolly neither of which troubled the judge. Back to the parade ring & the field for the 6f Fillies & mares Group 3 which now has three non runners including the reasonably well fancied Hallelujah leaving 11. I had this between Ladies are Forever & Joyeuse & on looks it's a no contest, Ladies looks a picture & despite me thinking I'm not betting today I'm changing my mind. Mowgli likes her as well & we head back to the betting ring where the pair are pretty much 7/2jtf's & without the other three I'll have that. Mowgli backs her for me with a joint he uses regularly that gives FP, fair price which is like BOG & if she goes off longer than the 7/2 I'll get that, it's only for the special customers & not riff raff like me :eyes He's decided however that he's not backing Ladies now & goes for Indignant, we stay up that end to watch. Willbeme sets off like a scalded cat with Indignant chasing her & Ladies & Joyeuse held up midfield. Two out & Danny Tudhope on Ladies is looking for a gap & for a second it seems they aren't getting one, then a small one opens & he shoves her through & she hits the front a furlong out & goes a length or so clear. Suddenly Joyeuse is flying home up the near rail & I'm shouting for the line, just for a change I get my wish & she's still a head up at the finish. Back to the winners for a few snaps & to wait for the SP which is 7/2, we'll collect when we've viewed the 2yo's for the nursery. Having had a look & nothing stands out or looks poor its back to the betting ring, Mowgli's bookie thinks that Dominic Cork can put that shocker LTO behind him & on better terms than when behind Pres Rapide before that might turn the top weight over. If Dominic Cork wins I'm packing the game in because its seriously bent, Mowgli's just fishing some money out to back Johnston's Indescribable when the price goes to 9/4 in the blink of an eye. Neither of us is playing then. Dominic Cork saves me from taking up knitting or something by beating just one of the seven home. Mowgli's dodged one with Indescribable who's only 4th & Pres Rapide looks like winning but drifts right near the end & the width of the track away is Ventura Shadow who wins by a neck. There are six non runners in the next leaving ten, I'm on pearl Castle in the ew lucky 15, Mowgli's had a bit on Kiwayu & we head off to see what this hype horse Kings Fete looks like. Seriously good is the answer, he's a 3yo against older horses but you wouldn't know it & looks a picture. In the parade ring he's fine but when they come out onto the track they have to go the wrong way down the front of the stand & turn round to canter back to the 1m 4f start. As soon as the handler lets him go he's off & James Doyle is having a devil of a job keeping hold of him, just when it seems he might career down the entire straight he gets his head over the near rail & manages to pull him up. He turns him round & goes to the far rail where he gets his head over there & manages to head back to the start. When they exit the gate he's fighting for his head & for the first half mile is pulling Doyle's arms out, it doesn't help that they're not going that quick but then round the long top bend he seems to settle at last & is going well. Down the straight & at the two Doyle says go, for a few strides it seems he's not finding much then the penny drops & he's going clear, the well backed Mighty Yar comes after him & at the line has got to half a length but Kings Fete was always holding him. With all the carry on before hand that was a pretty good display & it would be no surprise to see him take up the Great Voltigeur engagement to see if he's worth sticking in the Leger. I need Pearl Castle in the first three for the ew bet, he's 4th while Kiwayu beats one home. I had Top Boy in the 17 runner sprint up next but he's one of seven that have defected, I'd half an eye on Fitz Flyer when looking last night & have a bit on him. You'd think I'd lumbered him with a few hundredweight instead of a few pounds when he appears anchored to the floor when the stalls open & he completely misses the break & never gets in it. We have a look at the runners for the next & then cross to the middle of the track because we're on a flyer after this race. I'm on Innsbruck anyway & Mowgli backs Shouranour with one of the bookies over there. He leads but fades over a furlong out, Innsbruck is there though & hits the front before getting in a ding dong with Bishop's Castle who inches past him but then Innsbruck fights back, he can't get there though & Bishop's Castle holds on by a head. This is the same Bishop's Castle that I've backed the last twice with the boy wonder Oisin Murphy up, the first time he was too far back & never got involved, the second time he did too much up front & got caught. He's here today because he's taken over from Neil Callan who sprained his ankle at Donny yesterday on Resurge in this race & it seems that the owner/trainer of Bishop's Castle have decided on a change & went for Dale Swift who's hardly the first name that would spring to mind when you want to get the job done, however fair play to Swift he's done what Murphy couldn't. Time to go & I'm in a better frame of mind as we cross the track to the car. The lucky 15 returned a profit with the win of Ladies are Forever, the non runner & the place of Innsbruck, if only Pearl Castle had got one more place up or if Innsbruck had stuck his tongue out at the right time, see pic below. 15pts returns 20.20pts Saturday. Hot again, the course as been watered overnight, no complaints here though because its clearly still fast crossing the track. I've got Royal Rascal in the first Mowgli's on Dusky Queen & Ryan Moore. Both run similar races in that they are at the back, look like they're not traveling, never get involved & beat one home, we both think that they hated the fast ground, not a good start. Mowgli's backed two in the next but one of them is among another batch of non runners, the other one Debdebdeb plods on for 5th. I'm on Waila who tracks the leaders & makes an effort three out, the response is not immediate but by the time they get to the furlong pole she's managed to get to the lead & looks like winning until Continuum arrives late on the scene in first time cheekpieces to run her out of it, bugger. There's an oldish chap stood next to me with a lad of about twelve who I suspect may be his Grandson & he tells the boy that "Ryan Moore's had two rides now & not tried on either of them" Bit much that, I'm thinking that Waila really ought not to have got beaten by that one but Moore's given her every chance & she wasn't good enough. We watch Lieutenant Kaffee run a respectable 6th beaten just over 9l's at Newmarket where Smaih walks home another 14l's behind in last. The winner Estidhkaar (rolls off the tongue that name eh) is most impressive & is in next years 2000 Guineas market at a general 20/1 now. We have the John Smith's Cup up next. Mowgli is on Chancery who actually runs a fair race for 5th. I'm on Red Avenger who doesn't & comes 11th. Farraaj wins the race & I've just turned away when Mowgli says "Look at that" I've missed it but Kieren Fallon has jumped off Tarikhi & the horse has reared up & then collapsed bowling Fallon over in the process. He's bounced straight back up but the horse is lying motionless & they are running out with the screens, it doesn't look good, the horse ambulance is quickly there but when the screens go & it pulls away Tarikhi is not stood up in the box. Later they give the news out on the track that he's ruptured a blood vessel & has sadly not survived, Mowgli tells me later that social media is going wild because C4 have said nothing, although having not recorded the broadcast I can't confirm this. Fallon is stood down having suffered a hand injury & a bright sunny day now has a dark & horrible side to it. Mowgli is on G Force & so am I along with Kingsgate Native but there are five non runners in here too. Kingsgate is a bit of a let down when he finds nothing having held every chance at the furlong pole. G Force comes to win the race it seems but can't go past Take Cover who drifts to the right a bit but he beats G Force fair & square, on refection I'm thinking that G Force wasn't putting it all in on the fast ground & might need a bit of juice to show his best, I certainly wouldn't bin him just yet. All afternoon I've been thinking I ought to have had a proper bet on Slade Power in the July Cup which is up next & decide I'm off down the back of the stands on the triple mission of using the loo, getting a glass of the tap water, which to the tracks credit they keep announcing is available at all the bars & to see what price Slade Power is in the Betfred under the stand. There's a gents right at the end of the back wall behind what used to be the old Silver ring & is the only one without a queue. Upon entering it's clear why, it's absolutely disgusting & looks like it hasn't been cleaned since they removed the Silver ring wall & made it one enclosure which must be at least 20 years ago & for a so called top track it's a bloody disgrace. Fortunately the tap at least works & there is a smear of soap in the dispenser. After grabbing a plastic glass of corporation pop I enter the Betfred to find that Slade Power is 15/8 although Due Diligence & Sole Power are among the three not running now. I leave it & fight my way back down to the parade ring where Mowgli says "You haven't backed him at that price have you"? He's now 13/8 & the SP is 7/4 but I confirm that I'm not on & he tells me that he looks like he may have boiled over judging by the pictures on the big screen. Away they go & he takes it up at a furlong out to score readily by a length & a half & now I am kicking myself for not striking a proper bet in the morning :spank The 2yo maiden is up next, Flaming Spear is very short & goes off 11/10f. He justifies the confidence by winning by 2.75l's & in decent style in the end having taken a while to hit top gear, I have the time as decent but nothing special but I suspect that he'll come on a ton for this & will be flying quite high soon. Polarisation looked well & was 3rd albeit 7l's+ behind & he should be winning something. While I'd got one to run in the nursery at the end I'd nothing in the 2m+ race up next & we decided to bail out & have a drink in the pub over the far side of the track & beat the rush. Sea Wolf plodded on for 4th in that nursery while Epithet who'd had the ground has an excuse when blobbing at Haydock last week again downed tools in the final furlong when a well backed 7/4f, the stewards asked about a couple of these but not the jolly so no idea what they blamed this time. Not even close with the ew lucky 15 & after a small rule 4 the trixie bets returned 13pts from the 35pts in total, could have been worse. Re: Rio's Racing Diary Catterick today, I'd like to be able to say that I'm going because it's a slightly better card than usual but really it's not, what I'm actually going for is the seller. Three weeks ago when I was at Carlisle I was in the parade ring four times in total, once with Balducci & three times with Graham & Frank, the first of these was with Dodina & this is what I reported afterwards...

She ran quite well for 6th & the interesting thing here was the jockey Tom Eaves thinks she's ready to win again but needs dropping in class having won a seller in April & this was a pretty hot class 4 handicap, I'll be watching where she runs in the next few weeks.
Here she is back down to a seller which is the level she won at in April. Since then she's not been disgraced, the next run at Newcastle was on soft & then she ran into one in the shape of Willbeme at Beverley & tried to go with the leaders & ran out of steam. She then missed the break under today's rider Megan Carberry at Thirsk & never got in it, she'll need to be smarter away today because stall 10 is not really ideal & is the main worry. That last run at Carlisle was actually quite good, she was there until quite late & getting the reins tangled in a rivals whip didn't help. Logan's Lad has the plum draw in one & can race up with the pace, still a maiden but has run 2nd twice the last time in first time blinkers two runs back at Chepstow off a pound lower but last time there in what was no better than a seller he was only 13th of 16 beaten 11l's, the blinkers are swopped for a visor now. Defence Council would have the best form despite only one win from 42 starts which was a maiden over four years ago, however on three of the last four runs starting at around this time last year he has refused to start, the last time was at Doncaster in March & since then he's moved to Ollie Pears, if he comes out on terms & runs anywhere near his best form they won't see which way he goes but it's a long time since he popped the gate & stall 2 looks wasted here. Thrust Control knows how to win but at a furlong or two more & he's got an even worse draw in 12. The Strig has struggled all season albeit at a bit better level & the rest don't appeal. Dodina really ought to be up to winning this with the draw the major doubt. The 2.00 is a nursery where I have Madamoiselle Bond top rated on her run in a quite warm race at Windsor nearly two months ago which was just slightly better than when breaking her duck at Lingfield on the aw a week before that & she could go well here but the yard hasn't had many winners & where's she been for two months? Izzthatright ran his best race when just held close home in that valuable seller at York in June, claimed there & now with Richard Fahey & ought to go well but a good bit to find on my numbers. The second top rated is Miami Carousel who bolted up at Ponty last week on nursery debut & carries a 6lb pen for that but looks to be the one to beat if he goes on the faster ground. The rest don't look up to it on form shown & while I keep saying I ought to stop backing these short ones I'll stick Miami Carousel in a trixie plus. In the 3.00 Lexington Rose came from off the pace to land a similar event at Carlisle LTO off 4lb less & should run well. Noble Asset has been 3rd in handicaps the last twice off the same mark as today since winning a Musselburgh maiden, tries a first time hood today. Innocently won three times last season the last of which was a much better race than today's off the same mark at York. Ran quite well both times this year but gets the fast ground he seems to love for the first time this year here & he's the pick. The 3.30 is a weak looking affair which can go to Coin Broker who's a Montjeu filly & ought to like this step up to near enough 1m 4f. Her bare form is nothing but the only one of the seven that's won a race is Chivers & that was a class 6 handicap at Beverley two runs back on good to soft & then didn't settle off today's mark of 3lb higher at Donny. That was on fast ground & it looks like Chivers might like a bit of juice too. Stout Cortez is likely to try to make all having made the running on most of his runs, a couple of them at a bit further than this & it depends if the likes of Chivers & Flying Cape allow him a soft lead here. I'll have Coin Broker in the trixie. The 4.00 looks even trappier & unless the unraced Say Something is anything then Irondale Express really ought to be in the winners at the 10th try in the maiden at 4.30 but while I may stay to watch I'm not playing at 1/2ish. Bets Dodina 20pts @ 10/3 Betvictor Miami Carousel 13/8 Innocently 3/1 Coin Broker 3/1 1pt trixie + 3 x 2pt singles = 10pts staked Betvictor all BOG Smarty Socks is declared for Doncaster tomorrow evening but while I may be going I haven't asked for an owners badge. Balducci is entered in the first at Newmarket on Saturday & I'm more tempted but will wait to see what the whole card looks like. Rio.

Re: Rio's Racing Diary Having arrived at Catterick I immediately run into Graham who tells me that the trainer has informed them that this ought to be a penalty kick providing they can over come the draw. I then run into another chap with connections who tells me that Ollie Pears has had Defence Council away for stalls training & they are expecting a big run, he's thinking the same as me that if he comes out on terms he will win. Differing opinions then but first up is the nursery. With Horsforth a non runner Miami Carousel is backed into evens at the off. Izzthatright breaks well & leads with Miami Carousel close up & Madamoiselle Bond tracking them, up the straight & Izzthatright isn't stopping but squeezes up Miami Carousel close home & he loses 2nd to Madamoiselle Bond by a nose. There's a stewards & they decide its accidental & Joe Doyle never seems to stop riding but there's a few thinking that the jolly might have won but not me. others are saying what if you'd backed it each way & now there are only two places? Each way at evens, is your Mother daft? The fact that you may have lost out if you'd done the forecast makes more sense but really the best horse won, end of story. Dodina's up next & looks well enough, based on the earlier conversation I decide to have a small cover bet on Defence Council just in case he does come out. He doesn't, the stalls open, the music for the Hamlet cigar ad kicks in (Bach's air on the G string I believe) & Jacob Butterfield & Defence Council are rooted to the spot. Meanwhile Megan Carberry has bounced Dodina out, got over towards the rail & is disputing the lead with Logan's Lad on her inner. Down the hill towards the turn in & its clear she is starting to struggle, she curls up & comes 7th while Logan's Lad makes all. Graham's not happy, he thinks she did too much in front, then he cheers up a bit when he realizes the four horse exacta perm he's done has come off & the divi is £111.10 :eek How the $%&£ did he come up with that one? The stewards have a few words....

Megan Carberry, the rider of DODINA (IRE), unplaced, reported that the filly had lost action.
The Stewards held an enquiry into the unruly behaviour of DEFENCE COUNCIL (IRE), ridden by Jacob Butterfield, which had refused to race. They interviewed the trainer and the Starter. Having heard their evidence and viewed recordings of the start, and noting that the gelding had also refused to race on three previous occasions, the Stewards referred DEFENCE COUNCIL’s behaviour to the British Horseracing Authority.
Methinks the only way they'll get that bugger to exit the stalls is to have somebody poised with a cattle prod!!! Not going well then but Danny Tudhope & Innocently raise the spirits by just about making all & never looking in danger in the 5f handicap, fast ground would seem to be the key to him. If Coin Broker can put her best foot forward there's still a chance I may just about break even. She's absolutely dreadful. The start is on the 5f spur & they have to pass the winning post twice, by the time they get to the start of the back straight at 7f's Danny is already hard at work, by the end of the back straight she's going nowhere & comes a poor 5th. It doesn't matter how minted your owners are (Michael Tabor & Mrs John Maginer) or if your well bred (Montjeu-Cash Run (Seeking the Gold)) if your bloody useless your bloody useless. I stayed to watch the next which was won by Lady Frances, Mowgli texts me later & tells me he put it up as the nap of the day at 12/1 :eyes Clever bugger ;) I've bailed out & am somewhere on the A1 when Irondale Express gets turned over at 8/13 in the maiden. Nothing from the disappointing Dodina so 20pts down, 8pts back from the trixie. Singles etc W/R 21-98 Stakes 1516pts Returns 1403.09pts Profit/Loss -112.91pts Multiple bets Stakes 898.25pts Returns 626.29pts Profit/Loss -271.96pts Lays W/R 1-2 Profit/Loss -2.5pts Scoop 6 -£10 Expenses £1075 The main reason for Mowgli's text was to confirm a run out to Doncaster this evening, however he did fess up that having put Lady Frances up in the naps comp the day before he then got sidetracked at work & forgot to back her :\ Silly bugger :spank I've had just the one bet this evening so far. In the Nursery at 6.30 I have the once raced New Providence top rated from the quite highly tried the last twice Cajoling & the maiden Tarando. I don't think Cajoling looks especially well handicapped & while Tarando has shown some promise she needs to find a fair bit on form so far & she's been off for two months. Polar Vortex could go well having landed a Nottingham maiden in a fair if unspectacular time before being out of her depth in the Queen Mary. The bare form of New providence's Lingfield maiden win is nothing special & the two that have run since have not done anything for the form but she was doing her best work late there so the extra furlong should suit, the fast ground shouldn't be a problem & the booking of Ryan Moore (2 from 10 for a profit this trainer) is eye catching. Bet New Providence 20pts @ 9/4 Skybet BOG There's a 2yo maiden at 7.00 where Lashkaal is very skinny for one that didn't pull any trees up on debut, indeed Hoorayforhollywood was a head in front of her on the same terms. I think I'll have a look & see if one of the unraced one's takes the eye here. There are more 2yo's at 8.10 where four have won & the one that hasn't Osaila is odds on following a good run in the Albany. I have her just top rated but on her debut run at Nottingham & not Ascot, Commander Patten is next with Surewecan third in a tight race. I'm not sure what to do here but I'm tempted to lay Osaila but would like to see them first. Smarty Socks runs at 7.35. The general feeling from what they've put up is he's not what he was & he is a 10yo now & that while he should go well they'd be playing each way but he's not an each way price & even this morning he was only around the 9/2 & 5/1 mark & at a fifth I suppose that might be considered a bet to nothing. I'm inclined to leave him be & if he wins then so be it.
